JStTFtOSU
Does it bother anyone else that Jordan Sibert cannot ever be Jordan Sibert on the telecasts?
"Rebound by Scott, outlets to Davis. Davis pushes it ahead to Oliver on the right wing. Oliver drives and draws the defense, kicks out to Jordan-Sibert-the-Transfer-From-the-Ohio-State-University. . . Jordan-Sibert-the-Transfer-From-the-Ohio-State-University puts up a three, and he hits it! Big shot for Jordan-Sibert-the-Transfer-From-the-Ohio-State-University! Jordan-Sibert-the-Transfer-From-the-Ohio-State-University gives UD their biggest lead of the night!"
It got pretty offensive after a while. Once a game is 1 more time than needed, but they practically can't say his name without mentioning the other school.

How long has Vee been a Flyer, and they still call him "Vee Sanford the transfer from Georgetown?"
or "vsttfgt."
I was beginning to think it was his given name.
Heck, maybe it is.
Does anyone know for sure?

It is like a kid from a small town near Chicago. They do not give his town and just say that he is from Chicago, since no one would recognize his town's name. Of course Ohio State is the only school anyone would recognize in Ohio (sarcasm). I wonder if they constantly refer to the WV point guard as the transfer from Dayton?

I remember a game earlier that I actually heard that.

Personally, I think having transfers from Georgetown and OSU lends credibility to the UD program. The casual viewer probably thinks to themselves "Hey the Flyers must have it goin' on if they can get guys from the Hoyas and the Buckeyes."

Got to take the good with the undesirable. These transfers for the most part are what is stabilizing our team. Transfers from really good basketball programs can be a gift. (by saying really good programs I can leave out LSU). More than anything we can see the maturity of Sanford and Sibert in every segment of their involvement. Albiet selectively, we won't be hurt by a steady diet of them, 1 or 2 at a time. Let some other program go through the Freshman year of outrageous personal expectations, drama, and infant mortality. Maturity rocks.

I would think transfers from big schools could also help in the recruiting of players that are considering big time programs and UD. Sibert can let them know what it is like being on a team with too much talent.

Or they think, these guys weren't good enough for tO$U and Georgetown and transferred down to Dayton. Just playing devils advocate, but some casual fans would definitely have the glass half empty view of transferring.

Not after seeing them play. Just ask Gonzaga or Cal.

I agree this weekend. But if they would see us against Del St. or Winthrop it could be a different story.

I understand that point of view. But there is a fine line in how the transfer story is presented. UD has been on the cusp of getting national respect for decades. In that instance the talking heads are going to present the story as "Dayton has made progress in their program by "snagging bench players" from....Duke State, Kansas U, blah blah.."
But let's say we reach the status of Gonzaga. Now with the same players, same programs, the story line becomes, " Dayton has "LURED quality players" from Duke St, Kansas U. ...
But we don't get the Gonzaga/Butler-like respect until the season's of deep NCAA runs are strung together.
Meanwhile I'll take all the Sanfords and Siberts we can get and just endure the snide remarks. It's not unlike enduring the "mid-major" thingy.

This is exactly how I feel. I was just throwing out the opposing view. I know some will just assume that he is a lesser player because they couldn't catch on at the bigger school no matter how well he does here. I know OSU fans that still even after this weekend saying its a fluke and ragging on him.

you known...from Welcome Back Kotter...
tOSU has an excellent starting 5 but has no depth or bench...their first sub, I swear, is Arnold Horshack. They may not miss Sibert now, but they will once they enter B10 play.

Another wrinkle is that ESPN Power Rankings refer to Sibert as Dayton's Freshman. Just goes to show, they don't know what is happening with very many non-BCS schools. The solution is simple, win games in the NCAA Tourney and they are forced to learn it. Kind of reminds of a short twenty years ago when then Gonzaga coach Dan Monson said in the locker room after an NCAA win, "It is pronounced Gonzaga (as opposed to Gonzoga), and they learn how to pronounce it the right way" (paraphrase). Force CBS to help the world pronounce it correctly, and we wont have that problem anymore.

I don't care if the announcers talk about where some of our players transferred from. In many ways, it could be a great thing. It suggests the great talent of some of our players was not being tapped at those other schools and they are becoming nationally relevant stars on our team. That is a wonderful thing for Archie on the recruiting trail.

Yes they do. I catch myself watching many of these games (don't ask me why because I don't know) and he is always being referred to as the transfer from Dayton. I really don't see the big deal.

When Trent MeChum transferred suddenly and unexpectedly to Illinois he started most of the time as a junior and senior in the Big Ten. I think only rarely early in his junior year did I hear an announcer say "Meacham, the transfer from Dayton." As a senior I don't think I ever heard UD mentioned.
If they said anything about him at all background-wise they we're more likely to say that he grew up in Champaign, or that his parents had a connection to the U of I.

While I don't want this to devolve into a BG thread, one of the obstinate things I think really hurt BG early on was his eschewing transfers/JUCOs in favor of building the program from the ground up with all freshmen. Had he brought in some experienced talent in his first recruiting class, we may not have had the 2006-07 let down we experienced or been as hamstrung by the Meachum defection.

Or a coach who refuses to use his talent; great talents don't sit the pine; even if not a starter they come in and contribute.

Leftovers? Really!! Not hardly; just players Thada recruited so schools like Dayton couldn't gobble up. Many BCS schools take a highly ranked or recruited play they know they likely will not use much just to keep competitors from getting them. While OSU and UD don't play each other they do compete for talent.

Actually TM had more than just a connection to UofI even though his parents were grads and his family big booster doners; TM himself was dating Coach's daughter.

His plan while ideal on paper was lacking since X was taking at risk players and very late transfers from Indiana, Oklahoma etc which gave them the 5 hour head start on anything BG was doing or trying to do.
