Who remembers 02/06/1969?

I was a 10 year old going on 11. Flyers were ranked #19, Davidson was ranked #6. The game was at Madison Square Garden for some reason. The Flyers had a one point lead with about 5 seconds left in the game and also had possession of the inbound. Jerry Gottschall(who was not a starter, his twin Jimmy was) was inbounding and threw an intercepted ball that was put up from about 17 feet away and swished. Flyers lose 64-63. My first real heartbreaker in all of my sports fandom.

They played each other two more times in February of 1972 and 1973, 1st at in Charlotte(lost 85-69) 2nd time at the Arena(lost 84-67).

It's time for the great 7 to get revenge for that 10 year old kid and if they do it in heartbreaking fashion to the hometown fans, this now 56 year old will feel redeemed.

Sounds like it's way past time for revenge. The only thing I can remember from 1969 is a vague, dreamlike memory of the moon landing.

I remember that game. it stung. Time for revenge. Mike Maloy was the player who tipped the inbounds pass.

I thought, now that you mention his name, Maloy was the one who made the shot. I don't remember the pass tipped, I remember the 5 second clock running down and Gottschall tossing the ball in desperation a little past half court. Of course, I'm not betting on my memory.

I, and a bunch of others, watched it on my buddies black and white in Stewart Hall. We were in control and then Maloy, an all-american at about 6'7" tipped the inbounds, grabbed it and shot a dagger. One of the most depressing Flyer losses ever.

Doesn't quite compare to 03/14/1974, but it's 2nd in my opinion.

Hey Jack, a lifetime friend of mine remembers a similar game that involved Pat Murnon inbounding the ball. Do you remember that and who it was againt? Maybe Cincinnati?

Sorry, sure don't. Saw every home game Murnon played except two, and I do not recall it.

Yep, not even close to the UCLA loss.

No, the first world series I remember was the 1970 Reds vs. Orioles. The reason I remember it is my mom went out and got a wiffle ball set. We went outside and instead of giving me a nice easy toss, she wound up and threw it overhand. It scared me so I dropped the bat, and started crying. Thus ended my first at bat.

I know that has nothing to do with UD hoops, but since you brought it up.

I was at game 2 of that series. Reds jumped out to 4-0 lead, then lost after jumping out to 3-0 lead and losing in game 1. The game I was at was a historic day as while watching the world series at Riverfront, I had to keep checking the radio broadcast of the very first ever Bengals/Browns game. We won that, we being the Browns. Thus my hatred for all things Baltimore. Also explains why I have a hard time remembering Brooks Hall. Anyone named Brooks gets erased from my memory as much as possible.

BTW, your mother sounds like the tough love sort of parent

Lefty Driesell was still the Davidson Coach, I believe. I didn't get to the Series, but I did see both playoff games in Pittsburgh. I remember thinking I had never seen a catcher like Johnny Bench

Nixon takes over presidency, The Beatles last public appearance, Armstrong on moon, Woodstock, the Manson Family murders, The Amazing Mets.
But what's really imbedded in my memory is Jerry Gottschall to Mike Maloy.

Too young to remember that one. I was @ a month shy of turning 7. But it is time to turn the tables on Davidson. Let's hope The Magnificent Seven can make it happen!

Same here - I was in tech school in West Texas and talked a buddy of mine, who had an old VW, to drive us to Dallas for the NCAA first round game (was it against Oklahoma? Ole Miss? Talked up the Flyers the whole drive. Bummer of a loss. Bit of a blur...)

I remember we had bought tickets in advance and had enough gas money to get there, but not enough to get back. (I think a month's pay for a 1 striper was about $47 a month.) I borrowed five bucks from one of the assistant managers at courtside for gas (29 cents a gallon) and got back just in time to avoid awol. Never did get the chance to pay him back.

Any of you guys him? IOU...

My memory sucks but I remember that game all too well. Like others, it was sickening and also my first taste of sports agony.

I wish there was the video...players always can use this type of motivation...I'm seeking big-time revenge ! Hopefully...I'll sleep well tonight.

I was searching the web on the off chance some footage is out there, but I couldn't find any. One search did turn up some cool footage of The Stones from a show they did at MSG that year, so it wasn't a total loss.

BTW, the Alumni Magazine has a nice write-up on Dr. Jerry Gottschall, who is a very successful physician. Anyone know what his twin, Jimmy, is up to? Jimmy was an excellent shooter and point guard.

Don't remember that game exactly. I remember playing NC in MSG I think? (not the recent NIT but years ago.)

Now this I remember. Most likely due to it being an NCAA game. That was heartbreaking. We were one of the few selected as an independent at that time ....

Jimmy is also a physician. Last I knew, he lived and practiced in Mass.

Okay, bad loss, I'm aggravated. So, I thought it would be a good idea to focus on our next game and resurrect this thread.

That's why I posted this: "Doesn't quite compare to 03/14/1974, but it's 2nd in my opinion."

Davidson game was bad, but actually being able to be the team to stop the streak of UCLA and actually doing it, IF DONOHER DOESN'T CALL A TIMEOUT, is worse. The worst coaching decision of his career. What in the word would make him think that calling a timeout is a good idea when Donald Smith is in process of shooting 12 footer from baseline with about 6 seconds on the clock(that was all net by the way)? That was a coach choking under the pressure is all I can think of.

Donnie Smith hit that corner shot...the BAR erupted....crazy town... and then they announced a time out was called before the shot...the air went out of the place...never forget it

Often talked about in UD lore...if you ever get a chance to actually watch that shot again, you'll notice that the UCLA players are almost walking toward the bench...which is why Donald Smith was so wide open. I heard a druken UD "fan" talking about that play a few years ago on a shuttle bus leaving UD arena and couldn't help but laugh at the guy. So for the record - (and I once heard an interview with DD and Donald Smith where they agreed he wasn't guarded at all due to the timeout) at least in my opinion - DD didn't lose the game.

Well, I don't believe that. I can't find that play anywhere on the internet but Donald Smith was not wide open. He got free to a spot he doesn't usually shoot from and he hit a good shot. He almost had the exact duplicate shot after the timeout and it spun out. Also heard Donoher joke about saying they had the game won and then some idiot called a timeout. Maybe he's perpetuating the lore for humor at his own expense, but not from my memory or anyone else's that watched the game. I watched it as have many here and you(and I believe you're the one who comes to DD's defense if someone said he has a hangnail) are the only one who ever came up with that explanation.

Believe what you will. I used to believe as you until I saw the replay; Donald wasn't guarded. And even if you blame DD for that, you're selectively remembering only a "bad" play; and all coaches have them - including our present coach.

My recall of that "bad" play in no way reflects my overall respect and fondness for DD. We were referring to that game and that play came up. Are you a relative of DD's? Because it's kind of obnoxious how you find any tiny slight or recollection of a mistake as something you have to defend?

I took Donoher's Coaching Men's Basketball class and he spent 1 class showing film back and forth on that game alone. As for the play in question, the time-out was called at least 3 seconds before the shot and the UCLA players weren't guarding anyone.

Well, someone's going to have to find away to get that clip on the internet because I can only go by my memory, and I've seen it since 1974, just not in 30 years or more and never remember seeing UCLA walking off.

Not a relative of Don Donoher. Just sick of people in general over the years selectively remembering how "DD blew that game". If someone does find a decent copy of the entire sequence and puts in on YouTube you will see it how it really was but don't worry, I won't expect you to apologize here...

My psychoanalyst neighbor said it is therapeutic to recall prior painful moments. It takes your mind off of the present day event (like:how could we lose to LaSalle and get dumped from the top 25 for the foreseeable future and start to worry about being on the bubble and perhaps have to win the A-10 tournament in Brooklyn to make the dance?) and you realize that you will survive and have the right to say you still have some memory left in your slowly demagnetizing cranial cavity.

Well, the UD fans who also love the Bengals didn't need to long to forget the UD loss, which pales in comparison to how the Bengals imploded last night. Agree?

Wholeheartedly. The Bengals wrote the ugliest chapter yet in their playoff woes. Made me put the Flyer loss in perspective real quick. Dayton can put this loss behind them and still make something great of this season. Sadly, the Bengals can't.

Actually that was a mistake. "The amazing Mets" is what their fans call them every year. "The Miracle Mets" was the special label given to the 1969 team. And since they were playing the Orioles who were heavily favored, I loved the fact they won in 5 games. And it was easy to like them as they had 3 very young pitchers who got them through that series. Maybe you've heard of them: Their names were Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan and Jerry Koosman.

This now 57 year old, waited almost 47 years for this moment. I'm ecstatic because I hate Davidson, and something tells me they are going to be our biggest in conference rivals for awhile. They are tough. I'm going to drink a Crown now.

Does not make up for that 1969 loss, but it felt good to finally beat Davidson.

That may have been the walk. The landing happened in the afternoon. I was at bat day at Yankee stadium when they made the announcement that the Eagle had landed.

As a side note, I got a Joe Pepitone bat and my sister got Bobby Murcer.

It was a Sunday at 4:17pm EDT. So what was FLYER5 doing at his 3rd grade desk at 4:17pm on a Sunday in the middle of summer? I'm thinking he's remembering 2nd moon landing in November.

You had to remind us. One of my few negative memories of Flyer basketball during my four years. Why did Jerry have to try and throw it deep over Malloy's arms? Probably a coaching error.

The coaching error was having the wrong twin inbound the ball.

Decatur Flyer is on a distinguished road
Cool 1969

Do not remember that game; but went to the home loss to Florida State that year. I was a UD ROTC instructor serving in the US Army at the time. My first UD game saw the Flyers lose a close game to FSU. Everyone was excited by the presence of Red Auerbach of the Boston Celtics at the game. FSU had a big awesome guy that impressed me, and a what looked like a slow, lazy center named Dave Cowans. Dayton was led by Ken May. Have been a Flyers fan since. The Arena was crazy that night!

Wow, first time I've seen my error here. Obviously I didn't see the 1st lunar landing from school. It must have been Apollo 14 landing in 1971. One of my St Anthony classmates is going to have to bail me out. Sorry for the erroneous statement. You're welcome however for the humor involved Go Flyers! Beat Davidson!
My whole post was wrong. Summer of Love was in '67. Wondering if I woke up that day!
Touchdown for Apollo 14 at 8:37 on February 5th, 1971.

Looked it up, that was actually the following season (1969-1970) Flyers lost to Florida St. 82-76 on 2/7/1970. Florida St. was ranked #12 when we lost to them.

I'll always remember 2/24/2017. Thank you Scooch, Kendall, X-Man, John C, Kyle and Charles. This helps but I need about 9 more straight victories over this team.

Jerry Gottschall has finally been redeemed. This time, our Flyers snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. It took 48 years, but it finally happened. How sweet it is!

okay, let's make it 3 in a row against them. We're now 2-4 all time against them. 1-1 at home, 1-2 at their place and 0-1 on neutral court(which is the game that started this thread). Time to even up the neutral court record.

Yes, Jerry Gottschall might be satisfied, but I'm not.
