Anchor Man

WEST BLOOMFIELD (MI) -- Fans of the NFL Draft are aware that the last man taken in the annual pro football meat market is dubbed “Mr. Irrelevant.” The “winning team” makes a big deal out of it and the player so chosen usually gets more publicity than many of the guys taken in earlier rounds.

Younger UD fans might not realize that in 1976 Dayton’s own Kelvin Kirk, a wide receiver and local product from Dunbar HS, was crowned “Mr. Irrelevant.” Kelvin was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the last pick in the 17th round. Kirk never made it to the NFL, but his Wiki page tells us that he played seven seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts, Calgary Stampeders, Saskatchewan Roughriders and Ottawa Rough Riders. Unfortunately, Kelvin died from a heart attack while playing pick-up basketball in 2003.

There is no such award for the NBA Draft, but as you have probably heard by now, this year’s “Anchor Man” was none other than The University of Dayton’s own Kostas Antetokounmpo. Kostas was selected at #60 by the Dallas Mavericks, meaning that he will be teamed with perennial All-Star Dirk Nowitzki and fellow draft import Luka Doncic.

Here is what it looked/sounded like on ESPN:

Interesting quote from Mavs GM Donnie Nelson on Greek Freak 2.0:

“A nice developmental player for us in the G-League.”

Marcus Hartman of The DDN points out one of the shortcomings of the NBA vs. MLB that Kostas will experience firsthand – player development:

ESPN College Basketball Analyst Fran Fraschilla has a favorite catchphrase to describe a player like Kostas:

“He’s a few years away from being a few years away.”

Good luck with the Mavs, big fella!
