Crutcher vs Wright, UD vs CU

Different teams, different circumstances, but I thought it might prove interesting.

Player GP MIN PPG RPG APG SPG BPG TPG FG% FT% 3P%
Jalen Crutcher 26 30.4 9.3 3.0 4.2 1.0 0.2 1.9 .438 .722 .365
McKinley Wright 27 32.6 14.4 4.6 5.3 1.0 0.5 2.9 .444 .768 .308

MIN FGM FGA FTM FTA 3PM 3PA PTS OR DR REB AST TO STLBLK
791 85 194 26 36 46 126 242 7 70 77 110 50 25 4
879 139 313 86 112 24 78 388 48 77 125 142 78 26 14

A couple of things stand out, which may not matter which team you are on.
MW gets to the FT line a lot more than JC
MW has a lot more offensive rebounds than JC
JC has a better 3pt %
JC has a lower TO/gm

I know a number of us were disappointed when MW de-committed and and went to Colorado. I think we got a pretty darn good alternative with Crutcher, especially when you consider the extremely short amount of time AG had to find and recruit him. All things considered, I expect that after 4 years, Crutcher will end up better than MW.

Another interesting thing is that in many categories, our Flyers have better stats than CU. Some of that is probably comptetition etc, but the two areas they kill us on is rebounds, both offensive and defensive, and blocks.

Truth be told, if we played a little better D and rebounded better, this team would have a much better record.

About two months ago, this would've triggered me terribly.

But I'm pretty happy with Crutch, even if MW is probably the better overall prospect.

Better prospect does not always equal better player.

Crutcher has improved more as the season went on. At this rate, he will be a better player than Wright next year. It would not surprise me one bit if it happens.

I think they're bringing a coupe of different things to the table, at least right now, given their physical (body type) attributes.

IIRC, Wright is a more physical presence, perhaps stronger and more defined, while Crutcher is certainly of a slighter build. This undoubtedly leads to more free throws for Wright since he's attacking the rim more often, and also Dayton has not been in too many games where teams are fouling us to extend the game, since we've been behind often. Plus, DD is typically who we're getting the ball to when such a circumstance is presented. This naturally will diminish the number of threes that Wright shoots and probably even increase his TO total since he's getting into traffic more often.

The numbers are an interesting comparison, but really tough to discern how one or the other has or would have performed. Arguably, the skill set that it appears Wright would have brought could be very useful for this team, having a guard who has the physical skills to penetrate some gaps and make some tough finishes around the rim.

I've not seen Wright play much this year, but I like what I have seen develop with Crutcher.

I have zero complaints with Critcher. he has been terrific with all we have asked of him this year. Looking at the numbers here what really stands out as a difference: clearly CU is counting on MW for a lot more offense. he has taken 119 more shots than Crutcher and 48 less threes than Crutcher. That is a lot and would definitely explain the FT disparity andmay indicate he is stronger. I do not know enough of CU to speak to anyother differences but i would say both stat lines are pretty darn good for a freshman PG.

I am behind Crutcher 100%. He has bought into Anthony Grant's style of ball and expectations of a point guard, and he has made the very best of the opportunity afforded to him. He has had a surprisingly good year for a freshman point guard.

Most of you know how I felt about MW. I still think about the potential he has and how much fun it would have been to watch that potential unfold as a Flyer.

That said, Crutcher has shown a ton of growth this year. He may not be the natural leader MW is, but I have been thrilled with his development and the leadership will come with time.

It's a great debate to have, but I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

I'll go with crutcher, he has shown great progress since donning the red and blue. MW hasn't shown any growth at all still just scoring 17 plus points a game. give me a guy anytime who can improve his game vs one that just levels off at double didgits

I love Crutcher. Love his court awareness. I haven't been this excited about a pg in a long time. And absolutely love the fact that he came to UD when someone else decided the grass was greener elsewhere. I'm sure MW is good, I don't see Clutcher (pun intended) as an lower alternative; I see a gamer, at least as good as MW if not better and can't wait to see the next 3+ years play out.

The only thing interesting about this whole story is the way people thought this season would be a loser without a good point guard, and a winner with a good point guard. Then we were distressed when Wright, who seemed to be the answer, withdrew. So then we were worried again about no point guard. Then Crutcher turns out to be pretty darn good, and we have no point guard problem. Result... we still sort of stink this year.

Bottom line, we have four decent guards and a forward starting, and poor defense.

when th Freshman PG is playing 35+ min per game, i'd say you still have a bit of a PG problem. different problem than we thought, but still a problem.

Is that like when a coach says they have two starting quarterbacks?

So is that big problem that will keep us out of the NCAA, or even a winning season, and is it even ranked in your top 5? Mine would be:

defense
X not contributing
no true center
turnovers
rebounding

I guess I can throw in no bench, which involves point guard, forward, center and shooing guard.

Spot on AC91. I would be shocked if Crutcher was the starting point guard the next 4 years. He is more a shooting guard who has been forced to play point because we have nobody else. Hats off to the young man for stepping up and doing what is asked of him. AG will get the people in here to play the way he wants to play. I fully expect the team to look a lot different next year.

Crutcher is a PG, and even if he's not, with Cohill and Davis on the roster next year and no other PG incoming that we know of, I think it's safe to assume Crutcher holds that spot down for a while.

He's a capable enough scorer if a London Warren type ended up on the roster you could play him off of the ball

Crutcher has been, and continues to be, one of the bright spots on the year. I think it's really easy to get into the projection business so I'm steering clear on that. However, get these young guys some experience and put better pieces in place and the future looks bright.
