Golden Obi's - @ Davidson win
We only had 2 TOs in the 2nd half and OT...that's the stat of the day.
But we can't vote for TOs...we can only vote for Play-ahs...and tonite we had a couple of them.
And the supporting cast didn't play bad either...SO who's the Goldenest of the Flyers!
And let's hope tonite's effort is contagious.

What? We can not vote for Jordy with the early dunk to set the tone? And some of you thought he could not get above the rim!
Guess it has to be Jalen then!

.....obviously Clutcher.
I liked CAG decision to go small in second half.
What a gutty performance all around.
Otherwise, Coach Grant, please report to Room 103 in the Frericks Center Monday at 9 a.m. for End of Game Basketball Strategy 101 !!!!!
HOW CAN YOU LET THEM SHOOT THAT POTENTIAL GAME WINNING 3??????!!!!!

Last time we went into OT against Davidson, our PG took over and made 3 straight threes to give us a quick 9 point lead. I believe he got the unanimous pre-Obi award. Seems like history should repeat itself.

As much as I wanted to reward Ibi for a great effort after the Fordham debacle...I wasn’t going to be the first person to not vote for Clutch. So, yeah, I kept it unanimous.
In order: Clutch, Ibi, Weaver, TEAM!

I was at the Davidson game in 2017 when Scoochie Smith went off by making 3 three pointers to win in overtime but I was just as excited tonight watching Jalen Crutcher carry the team on his shoulders by scoring a career high 29 points. No doubt my vote goes to Jalen!

Crusher. How could we compete without him?
Weaver was a good spark. Considerable upgrade over Brea who only camps out in the corner ( and nobody want to pass it to him) until it’s his turn to get blown by on d. Sure he may may be Devin Oliver someday/ not today.

I ALMOST went Weaver. He was huge tonight. Love to see his aggressive takes to the hoop. Also the lefty touch throws the other teams off.
But crutcher was and is, by far, the best player on this team. He needs to produce like this each night in order for flyer wins. Godspeed my man!

Keepin the Crutcher momentum going.
He was the Wendy's Baconator of the game. Especially on the last 2 FT end of regulation.

I went off script and voted Ibi. Not because Jalen doesn't deserve it, but I felt Ibi had the greatest turnaround after the Fordham debacle. He played with purpose, energy, and did what he has to do...attack the basket and, at a minimum, get the the FT line (10 attempts). Hopefully it will continue.

Where is CAG?
CAG starts Weaver at PG and he gives us 7 assists, 7 boards and zero turnovers. He moves Crutcher to shooting guard and he scores 29. He would have my vote. But I voted for Ibi Watson because he really shook off the Fordham doldrum and took a charge, rebounded, sacrificed his body and played 42 high quality minutes. He was a major senior leader against Davidson that led to a hard-earned road win. Crutcher was simply himself. An all-american senior leader who refused to lose on the road against a good conference team. But we expect that of Jalen. He is Dayton's MVP.

Why is it tough to foul in that situation? Maybe he is just covering for a player who screwed up. And I believe we had a foul to give. Foul to disrupt them, make them take the ball out of bounds again and start over.

I think we had six team fouls at that point, so none to give, but so what, put him at the line for one and one. I do not understand Grant's logic.

You are correct. I just checked the official Livestats. That makes Grant's decision even more mind boggling. You always foul for the one to make six, even if you are not going to foul to prevent the three. Man up Coach and admit you blew it.

I'm not going to fault CAG for deciding not to foul at that time. He has shown that in the past. It is his philosophy. WE can agree or disagree but that is his philosophy. That was NOT an easy three they made. Defense was pretty good. However, if we only had five fouls at that point in the game his decision can be questioned. At least foul with 4-5 seconds left.

Whatever time was left on the clock(I don't remember exactly(somewhere around 14 seconds?) by not fouling, you give them all that time to find their shot. If you foul them with about 7 seconds left, you go from giving them 15 seconds to find the shot to 7. I think fouling when you have one to give is a no-brainer.
However, as I said in another thread, I'm letting CAG off hook this time because the greatest thing he did was take a demoralized team and got them in mental shape to win the game. I think we all would've been satisfied with a good hard fought, fundamentally sound game by the Flyers yesterday, win or lose. We got the win. But yes, he needs to use that foul he had left.

He should have fouled since we had one to give, no doubt. And I was screaming for it. But the way we hit the offensive boards (which is to say not at all), I’m not sure I would have fouled to put them at the line. The old hit-the-first-miss-the-second-on-purpose strategy might have been a killer.

No doubt we should have fouled given that we had one to give - that was a mistake by Coach Grant. And the analytics say that we should've then fouled again to put them at the line as long as there was less than 6 or 7 seconds left in the game. But the analytics aren't as strong as they once were - teams practice missing that second free throw and they also anticipate the foul in an effort to get a shot up and draw three free throws. I'm with The Fly on this one - as bad as we are at rebounding, I think I would've gone against the analytics in this case.
The other key is to not foul too early. My mind is failing me, but I'm pretty sure we lost a game to LaSalle in the BG era by fouling too early. LaSalle made both, fouled us to put us at the line for a 1-and-1, we missed, and they came down and hit a shot to beat us.
It's a slippery slope - just glad we won the game and hope Coach realizes he made a mistake by not fouling when he had one to give.

Not disagreeing with the group’s thoughts about fouling in that situation. Once they got the ball past midcourt, I was screaming at my TV, “FOUL!!!!” But I agree wholeheartedly that the best thing CAG did was get this TEAM to a point where this win was possible. Was it equal to beating DePaul in 1984? No. But it might be the win that rights this ship, and allows for an 18-6 (or similar) season. And that, with COVID, up to 6 newcomers, Rodney’s injury, etc. would be a satisfactory result this year, given where we are now.

I'm holding out for Coach Grant to show up. He got all 4 of the above to play together and play to the max, and therefore be legit for the honors above. He gets my write-in vote.

I agree. I watched the game and was expecting a foul. But are we sure the UD player followed CAG's strategy of no foul- or did CAG call for the foul and our player simply did not execute?

Coach said post game he did not tell them to foul, but who knows, he may not want to throw his players under the bus. I remember on a Coach K show he was asked what is the most frustrating thing about coaching freshman? His response was, they do not listen in the time out huddles.
