UD’S QUICKNESS, ATHLETICISM

WILL SURPRISE MOUNTAINEERS

I’m going out on a limb here, and I sure hope it’s sturdy enough to support my 6-foot, 180-pound frame.

I’m predicting the Dayton Flyers will defeat West Virginia in a first-round NCAA Tournament game in Minneapolis on Friday, March 20.

Even though Dayton’s best point guard is a junior at Thurgood Marshall High School in Dayton (Juwan Staten), even though Charles Little’s future is in football, even though Kurt Huelsman can’t dunk a donut — some will argue he can’t score in an empty gym — I have faith that the Flyers can, and will, pull off the upset.

True, West Virginia forward Devin Ebanks, who wears uniform No. 3, is arguably the nation’s most talented freshman.

True, WVU coach Bob Huggins knows UD’s program well from his long tenure at the University of Cincinnati.

But the Mountaineers’ lack of familiarity with UD gives the Flyers an advantage.

The Flyers will surprise West Virginia with their quickness, speed, athleticism and depth.

I believe UD will “score the ball” — just enough to win, 69-66.
