Smile Opening Night Victory: The Ledge and the Potential

Article: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33475

Lets avoid the one-game survey and see what happens next. A lot of ball to be played.

Did not see the game but understand and appreciate your analysis. Could not agree with you more about this type of first game of the season.

Also I think that a team really getting to know each other as a team and playing a first game at home in front of a boisterous crowd which has high expectations creates an extra pressure that affects the team's play. Trying to do too much or trying not to make a mistake.

A tightening race for a race horse strengthens the horse for the big races to come. Based on your analysis, I think that is what happened last night. We played strong against a decent team and we will get stronger for the games ahead and not overlook an opponent.

The 2014 Elite 8 team started the season with a last second victory over Ft. Wayne. A win is a win.

flybye is infamous around these parts
Just watched the replay...out rebounded at home and horrific defense. Carry over from last year. All the cliches, first game..tough opener....Transfers fitting in...Jordy hurt all all true . We will be good on offense but that approach on defense and the rebounding is about toughness and a mentality. This is year 3. Telling comment by Jalen after he game, “ we let up on defense “. Come on man!!!

I thought (and still think) we'll see a lot more Obi at the 4 this year, but it didn't happen last night. Obi 35 minutes, Johnson 11 minutes, Tshimanga and Sissoko 0 minutes, means only 6 minutes where Toppin and Johnson were on the floor together. Clearly Sissoko's not quite ready for prime time or you would think he'd have seen at least a few minutes. Tshimanga has 15 days to get healthy for Maui. Hopefully he can get a few minutes vs. Omaha to ease back into action. Which leads to my next point...

Dribble penetration was insane last night by ISU. Having an eraser in the middle should help with this. We've hoped that Tshimanga can play D similar to Big Steve. Man, I sure hope so. I don't know how to contain the dribble-drive, but it was a weakness last year. The coaches need to figure this out, fast.

7-27 3FG is not going to cut it. Even 33% would have made last night closer to the expected margin of 12 points. A few of the misses can be chalked up to poor shot selection which can be fixed by coaching, and I seriously doubt that Mikesell and Crutcher, proven 33+% shooters, will combine for 0-9 very often.

Ibi Watson's debut was kind of quiet. I'm really excited to see how he progresses. Brooks Hall told us that he was the best player on the team last year. For UD to advance to the level we want them to, we need to have another star develop, and Watson is the most likely candidate.

Rodney Chatman, so far, is a better version of Jordan Davis. Better ball handler, equal shooter, almost as good of a defender, and most importantly, can get Crutcher some minutes on the bench with no drop-off at the point. He's the most plug-and-play of any of the new faces.

IU lost to them last year and never seemed to recover. Obviously there is always context to this stuff.

Start off with a W, identify the shortcomings and figure out how to fix them.

perhaps, just thinking here.... perhaps, we should instruct Jalen to pump fake on the 3's and dish off more to Rodney Chatman..... feed Chatman on the 3's, and you will contribute greatly..... on a night where our shooting was abysmal and infuriatingly awful... it is a crying shame that the hot hand was not given more opportunity for 3's... what was he, 3 for 5 from 3? when I played, we recognized who the hot hand was, and fed him...

we should of given Chatman at least 10 shots from 3, instead of the 5....

oh, and I forgot to add:
Chris, you should get a blog going.. think there would be much interest in it...
