Thumbs up 2008 Recruits!

http://dayton.rivals.com/prosearch.a...rt=1&Year=2008

( You can use the link above to search for players )

Rivals currently lists five guys that have UD on their lists:

Ben Zoeller. Duel threat QB. 6' 1" 205 lbs. Louisville KY St. Xavier. Other schools on his list are Cincinnati, Kentucky, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Southern Illinois.

Bruce Watson. OT. 6' 8" 260 lbs. Detroit, MI Southwestern School. Other schools on his list are Illinois, Iowa, Toledo, Harvard, Yale.

Jordan Beighle. K. 5' 8" 160 lbs. Tipp City, OH, Tippecanoe. Other schools on his list are Air Force, Wake Forest, Army, Ball State, Ohio, Eastern Kentucky.

Daimion Garrett. WR. 6' 6" 190 lbs. Evansville, IN Reitz. Other schools on his list are Indiana, Southern Illinois.

Edward Daniels. CB. 5' 9" 175 lbs. Tucker, GA. Other schools on his list include UAB, Ball State, Bradley, Fresno State, Kent, South Alabama. ( Maybe also a basketball player?)

It is obviously very early in the recruiting process, but some of these guys look VERY interesting. Note the "heavy hitters" that UD is recruiting against.... No Mount Unions, Tiffins or Wittenbergs on these kids lists.... We will have to see if UD is able to pull any of them in to the fold.

Update 10/12/07

It looks like Daimion is no longer listed as a Dayton recruit.

http://purdue.rivals.com/commitlist....ol=237&Sport=2

Daimion Garrett. WR. 6' 6" 190 lbs. Evansville, IN Reitz. Other schools on his list are Indiana, Southern Illinois.

Daimion is going to play basketball at Eastern Illinois.

All of the other players in post #1 are still listed.

A new name has come into play that sounds very exciting.

Ed Kirwan is a defensive lineman. He is 6' 4" and 260 lbs! He is reported to run a 4.75 forty. He is from out in New Jersey. Other schools on his list are potential future PFL teams, Iona and Marist as well as New Hampshire.

I copied NCKevi's post into this thread so that we would have all of the 2008 recruiting information in one thread.

QB looking at UD

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Liberty senior Colton Weaver is one of the top quarterbacks in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League, throwing for 2,099 yards and 17 touchdowns last season.

"Three schools I'm looking at right now really hard are Franklin & Marshall, Lafayette and Dayton. There's a couple others, but those are probably the main three."

Kicker Recruit Jordan Beighle

http://www.jbfor3.com/

Jordan has his own website.... Kind of an interesting idea....

Interesting DDN article on the kicking coach that Jordan uses:

More on Jordan:

Division III First Team!!

http://www.oxfordpress.com/s/content...llswagate.html

Given our kicking woes, this kid sure looks like interesting. Small, but reported to have a very strong leg.... Seems like a typical UD recruit, Division III, first teamer, a bit small, under the radar.... I'll be interested to see if we can land him!

Kinda Slow....

Not much to report on the recruiting front. I gather that kids cannot sign with FCS teams until February at the earliest. Of course being non-scholarship, UD does not "sign" anyone. In official parlance, all of our recruiting commitments are "verbal".

Still, I did notice that on my way to University sponsored tailgate before the Gridiron Classic, located in the Time Warner Flight Deck at the Arena, we did pass a large sign on the sidewalk that was directing the football recruits to the appropriate area! I have to think that a PFL title and then having recruits attend the fantastic Gridiron Classic victory will help recruiting a good bit!

Bart Tanski

http://dayton.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=59273

A Rivals Two Star QB, Dayton is the only school on his list!! Interesting that he is "pro-style", as Dayton normally seems to recruit "dual threat" QB's....

http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/2...rt-tanski.html

You have to read the thread at the site above.... Here is just one of the posts:

"Living in Mentor, I see quite a bit of Bart play.

Mentor's offense is basically a spread, no huddle offense with every snap out of the shot gun. Going into this past Saturday semi-final game against Canton McKinley, he had gone well over 100 attempts without throiwng an INT. During the game against McKinley (I was there), I saw one poor decision on his part (a late throw over the middle) that, fortunately for Mentor, 2 McKinley DB's smacked each other away from the INT. He did throw an INT in the game, but it came on a tipped ball.

What I have seen this year from Bart that has impressed me is his poise. Trailing 13-12 with 2:30 left in the game, he led Mentor on a 70 yard TD drive to win Saturday's game.

I too think he needs to work a little on arm strength and mechanics when on the move."

And how about this:

Thursday, November 29, 2007 Tim Warsinskey

Plain Dealer Reporter
Mentor quarterback Bart Tanski "smiled from ear to ear," according to his mother, Beth, on Wednesday.
In other news, Tanski was named winner of the 21st annual Associated Press Mr. Football award, emblematic of the top high school player in Ohio.
In the Tanski household, it was difficult to say which was a bigger deal for the poker-faced senior who is as comfortable listening to Celine Dion music in the locker room as he is leading a frenetic, last-minute touchdown drive.
"He doesn't have many highs and lows," said Beth Tanski, who cried when she heard the news.

Mr. Football for Ohio.... Are you kidding me? Glad to see that he has serious interest in the Flyers. I think his highschool GPA is reported to be 3.8! Could be a great fit for the Flyers!

EXCITING!!!!!

This would be a good fit for the Flyers since he ran a no-huddle spread offense (I don't know where they get the pro-style QB from) for two years and is a smart student.

It's been a while since a Cleveland area QB received so much press. Of course his teams were in the Div.1 finals two years in a row; passing for 345 yards against Hilliard Davidson in 2006 while losing 36-35 (Hilliard coach gambled on 2 point conversion to win ending 2 OT) and in 2007 he passed for 178 yards when his team was man-handled by Cincy Xavier.

I don't believe his posted 6'2" height or anything like 200#. Skinny arms and a cumbersome knee brace were noticeable in the two TV games I watched. He is "cool" with body language and can throw (3179 yards last season) to good receivers. He can run too, 772 yards. But his 40 yard time is not great nor his jump. All these things have kept the Div.1 offers from arriving much to the surprise of local fans. Some of us think he could do well in the MAC, but all is quiet. It would be great for UD to get a Div.1 high school Ohio Mr. Football at a skill position. That would shake up the Greater Cleveland forum fans and definitely get the word "Dayton football" into the NE Ohio news.

Brett Lancaster

http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73...=1&nid=3129024

Here is a two star rated safety by Scout that will be visiting Dayton on 1/28/08! He visits Butler on 1/25/08. Also being recruited by Butler, Miami (Oh), Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, San Jose State, Wagner.

He is from California and sure sounds like he would be a great catch! It would be sweet to be able to tap into the talent rich California area for recruits! Hats off to UD for getting this recruit to come for a visit.... Now let's seal the deal!

Dayton is attracting some extremely high recuits folks!

Thumbs up Bart Tanski Update / Rumors....

http://www.cleveland.com/forums/hsfo...k?artid=138652

According to this forum, Bart has an "offer" from Dayton. The other option as reported on the forum is to walk on at Bowling Green. It sounds like he would not even be a preferred walk on, he would have to make the team....

Come on Bart, we want you at Dayton! Maybe you can be the next Josh Johnson, ( QB from PFL leaguemate San Diego ), that will be drafted in the NFL draft this year!

We want Bart, we want Bart, we want Bart.... Well, you get the idea!

OMG!

The DetroitFlyer is on a Cleveland.com high school forum! Amazing!

Well, I can't blame him. Been there for a few years.

Yes the Mr. Ohio Football really has gone into seclusion. Nothing public, even his highlight video is blank on one recruiting website.

The Dayton "offer" was a long time ago. With nothing happening, the troups on Cleveland are restless. Some blaming MAC schools, others blaming the voters who bestowed the award on Tanski. Those seem to forget that the award was for HS achivement, not college potential. Not every high schooler can have perfect throwing motion or be 6'4" or run 4.4. Bart Tanski just stayed cool and won games. Except of course St. X...in the championship game...so is that a problem for UD alum?

But that little guy Welker for the Patriots last night sure showed how little people can play in the NFL.

Anyway, players are still coming to UD for visits and we'll begin hearing names soon I hope.

QB and RB Mentioned Here

http://daytondaily.qwapi.com/site?t=...Tw6jrJJu1lmA6w

Kind of an old report, December 2007, but a QB and RB are mentioned in the article as being recruited by Dayton. Both sound promising and seem to fit the "profile" od a UD recruit.

Ernest leads pack of Kings recruits
By Steven Matthews

Staff Writer

Thursday, December 13, 2007
Kings High School's football team is a little more than a month removed from its first-round playoff loss to eventual Division II state champion Anderson.

But the season isn't over for the Knights' seniors. The recruiting season, that is.

"It's a busy time of the year," Kings coach Andy Olds said. "We want to get the kids in a position to say yes or no to somebody. We want them to be happy and give them as many opportunities as possible."

The Football signing period begins Feb. 6.

Quarterback Bruce Ernest -- who threw for 3,855 yards and 33 TDs for his career -- headlines the list of college prospects.

"He has a lot of opportunities and a lot of offers," Olds said.

Ernest has offers from Ivy League schools such as Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard and Princeton. He left Wednesday morning to take unofficial visits to Cornell and Dartmouth. Air Force made Ernest an offer in the spring, and he's also drawn interest from Butler, Dayton, Grand Valley State, Wittenberg, Denison, Wabash and Case Western Reserve. An opportunity to be a preferred walk-on at Indiana also could materialize.

"It's awesome," Ernest said. "It's just cool to look back and realize the great opportunities I've had with Kings football have led to all this stuff."

Ernest had surgery in mid-November to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder (non-throwing), and is expected to be fully recovered in two months. He carries a 4.164 GPA, and said he hopes to make a decision around mid-January.

• Running back Conner Warye (916 yds., 7.3 ave., 9 TDs) has heard from the likes of Butler, Dayton, Kenyon, Denison, Thomas More, Ohio Wesleyan and the College of Mount St. Joseph. He also took an unofficial visit to Indiana last week with the hopes of landing a preferred walk-on spot.

Tanski to Bowling Green....

http://www.cleveland.com/hssports/pl...000.xml&coll=2

He will walk on, no scholarship. I hope this works out for him. I truly believe that he missed out on a great education and a great football experience by not choosing Dayton. Keep an eye on him, I would not be surprised to see him transfer to UD next year if things do not work out at BG. Good luck to him!

Tanski's desire

This decision to walk-on at Bowling Green is strictly Bart Tanski's desire to play at a certain level even though college recruiters doubt his chances.

There is no issue of his smarts and maybe no finacial issue for trying Dayton; it was just that Ohio's Mr. Football had faith in his size, speed and form to go BG at any condition. Good luck to him whenever walk-ons start up there.

I saw on Scout.com that QB recruit Will Stein of Ky State Champ Louisville Trinity High School has decided to take a preferred walk-on at UofL instead of come to Dayton. Too bad, he came from a great offensive set and would have done well for the Flyers. Good luck to Will. Maybe we will end up with him or Tanski down the road.

I sort of question his plan to walk on at BG,he must still beat out Nordonia QB Aaron Pankratz who is 6-5, 225 lbs that just accepted a scholarship at BG.

Phil Furbay, DB Turpin

Phil continues a long UD tradition of being an excellent student. Reported to have a GPA between 3.5 and 3.99!

Sounds like an excellent pick-up for the Flyers!!

Elger & Furbay

Good to see an Ohio Div.1 Class recruit in Owen Elger from Springboro. Listed as 6-1 and 270# OL. He was All-Conference and second team SW District. Couldn't find out much about his team; they did not make it to playoffs and the school website lacks athletics.

Turpin High had a great season going undefeated in their Div.II schedule and were top ranked in computer points but got beat by one point in the Regional final by Cincy Anderson. Phil Furbay is listed as a DB/RB and is 6-0, 175#. Looks like UD wants him on defense. Phil has 5 teammates going on to college ball. Turpin is the same school that our LB Brian Kelly attended. Nice looking field (appears to be Field Turf) on his school site.

I hope we can continue to get players from Ohio's Div.1 and Div.II schools where the competition for playing time and in-game experience is so much tougher than the Div.III and smaller schools.

What's with this Kelly name at UD!!!

This one needs to grow a bit. Another recruited DB is 6-0.

Chris Salvi

LEHIGH LOST THIS ONE TO US!!!!!

http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=129181

Carmel signings: Coach Andy Bitto's 2007 Class 7A state semifinalist team.

Defensive back Chris Salvi

http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=73281

What a gem that Grandma Salvi is.

Every year, she ponders the perfect Christmas gift for each one of her grandchildren. Then, she sets out to find them.

All 40 of them.

That's 40 gifts for … yep, 40 grandchildren.

"I don't know how she does it," said Chris Salvi, one of those grandchildren. "She's an amazing woman."

Marita Salvi, 75, is the matriarch of one of Lake County's largest families, and also one of its most prominent.

You'll find Salvis all over the northern suburbs as lawyers, doctors, politicians, even a radio talk show host in Al Salvi, one of Marita's five sons.

You'll also find them as students at Carmel Catholic High School. Marita and her late husband, Albert Sr., both devout Catholics, had nine children and all nine graduated from Carmel.

Of their 40 grandchildren, three have already graduated from Carmel and seven are in school there right now -- with many, many more to come.

Chris Salvi, a senior at Carmel, is reminded about his family's strong connection to the school every time he passes by the main gym. It has his father's name on it, after all.

Patrick Salvi, a 1971 Carmel graduate, a prominent malpractice lawyer in Waukegan and the eldest child of Marita and Albert Sr., donated generously when his alma mater constructed a brand new gymnasium about 10 years ago. Carmel thanked him by stretching his name across the entrances.

"Kids at school will kind of joke about that," said Chris Salvi, the fourth of Patrick and Lindy Salvi's five sons. His three older brothers, Patrick, David and Brian, have already graduated from Carmel and his younger brother Will is a junior at Carmel.

"But I don't mind it," Salvi said. "I kind of like being part of (the family tradition)."

In fact, Chris Salvi seems to be all about traditions. He's also made himself a part -- a vital part, no less -- of another strong tradition at Carmel.

A winning football team.

Salvi is a two-year starter for the 9-2 Corsairs, who will take on De La Salle Saturday night in the Class 7A quarterfinals. A cornerback turned safety, he's become a focal point of the defense with his textbook tackling and hard hits.

He ranks second on the team with 93 tackles. He also has 4 interceptions, a sack and a blocked punt against Notre Dame that he recovered himself and ran in for a touchdown.

"Last year, Chris had a good year, but this year he's had a breakout year," Carmel coach Andy Bitto said. "Part of it has to do with the fact that he switched from cornerback to safety and safety seems to suit him a lot better. He's great against the run and he's the kind of player who really loves to hit people.

"But the other part of it is that Chris has worked so darn hard to improve himself and establish himself on this team. He was in the weight room so much over the summer that I had to practically kick him out. I think I'll be able to use him as an example for many years about what you need to do to really get ahead. This is a kid who is just extremely motivated to do his best."

Salvi says that his passion for football -- the sport he grew up playing in the backyard with his brothers -- motivates him to work hard on the field, to push himself, to strive for excellence.

But his drive comes from other sources as well.

Salvi hates it that some people assume he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, just because he comes from an affluent family. Proving that he's not just coasting on the Salvi name drives him in just about everything he does.

"I don't like hearing that I get things given to me," said Salvi, who does chores -- like taking out the trash and cleaning his room -- like most teenagers. "It's not true. My mom and dad are both hard workers and they've taught us that the way to get what you want is by working hard."

Salvi says he works hardest of all in the classroom.

Perhaps the biggest source of motivation in his life is his constant battle with dyslexia. He was diagnosed with it in the first grade.

Back then, he was hampered by the typical side effects of dyslexia, flip-flopping words, writing letters backwards. Now, Salvi says that his dyslexia can be an issue in the way he learns.

"I learn differently from other people," Salvi said. "I am very much a visual learner, so if a teacher is just talking to the class about something, I have a hard time with that. I need to see things. It's been a constant struggle for me in school."

Salvi says that the expertise of tutors has helped.

So has his own persistence.

"Chris would be at tutoring at 6:30 in the morning, learning how to study and work through all these various issues," Salvi's mother Lindy said. "He has really had to work hard at school and his grades. I think he's learned much of his work ethic because of his dyslexia and he's just applied that to football."

Salvi isn't done working yet. He'd love to take his drive and passion for the game to college. He gets regular calls from coaches at all levels, but is hearing most often from Augustana, Dayton and Lehigh.

"I just love football so much," Salvi said. "I love the physical aspect of football, I just love playing the game. I've been playing since the fourth grade."

Salvi's size

Chris Salvi played on a Carmel Catholic High that went 10-3 last season.

He's listed as 5'10" and 185#. There is a younger Salvi on the roster who is also 5'10". Bet Grandma is short too. We've had 6' safeties at UD lately. Probably why the article said he was moved from cornerback to safety. Hope he has speed. Stats show he made 84 tackles and had 4 intercepts.

I am not seeing a good trend here.... Many of our "high profile" recruits are ending up at other schools.... Of course, "high profile" for me is any kid that showed up on Rivals or Scout, etc.... Sometimes these sites are as much about promoting the player as they are about promoting talent.... UD has done OK with its current recruiting model, it is just hard to see almost every other FCS school tout their classes while we have to scrounge the Internet looking for stray newspaper stories....

One has to wonder if MK retiring is having an impact on this year's recruiting class....

I sure hope that we are finding some sleepers....

I don't think that's a radical change from other years. You've done a good job, as well as others, of combing the airwaves and finding info. But in other years without our internet sleuths, the silence was deafening. Still we ended up with a good flock--just didn't hear mcuh about them.

Thumbs up Tyler Hujik - Receiver from Wisconsin

First team All State in Wisconsin!!!!! Nice!!!!!

http://www.kenoshanews.com/article_c...cleNum=2498626

Hujik joins Flyers

When Tremper's Tyler Hujik found out the University of Dayton football team utilizes the spread offense, he knew it would be a perfect fit.

After emerging as one of the state's top receivers this season, Hujik signed a Letter of Intent on Wednesday to compete for the NCAA Division 1-AA Flyers.

"One of the things that attracted me to the program was an opportunity to play early," Hujik said. "It was a good opportunity."

Dayton, the defending Pioneer League co-champion, finished 11-1 last season. The Flyers defeated Albany, 42-21, in the Gridiron Classic on Dec. 1 at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.

Hujik was the recipient of this year's Ameche Medal, handed out to the County's top player as voted on by area media. The 5-11, 175-pounder was named first-team All-State by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association and Wisconsinpreps.com in addition to being named first-team All-SEC and the league's Offensive Player of the Year.

Hujik caught 68 passes for 992 yards and scored 12 touchdowns.

not always right. I learned today, from Chris's father, that Chris did not commit to Dayton. He committed to Butler. Like Brett Lancaster, his decision came down to Dayton and Butler. Also like Brett. he felt Butler was a better fit for him....

If you follow football recruiting, you start to get an idea as to why Mike Kelly thought Butler was our primary rival.

ud recruits

I am having a tough time finding out who has been recruited to play football at UD. One I did see was Owen Elger, OL from Springboro. We know some things about him through his h.s. coaches. Very, very strong and hard nosed, plays mean and rough. Bright football player - his head coach said he "gets it". Gifted feet, his best quality. He is 6-2" and would have played Div. I but for his height. Runs sub-5.0 sec. 40-yard dash. I am told he as physical an OL as there is in the state. Springboro was 6-4 this year. Elger was all GWOC first team two years, 2nd team all-southwest OH two years, all DDN two years, all-Middletown Journal first team. Saw an item on the internet from a recruiting service that said "if you get locked up with him, you are finished. Unusual speed and quickness for his size". Hope to see more on the recruiting class. Need another good season to start off Chamberlain's first year. Really good choice for head coach, he deserves it.

another ud football recruit

A friend of mine from northwest Indiana let me know that a QB from Lafayette Jefferson HS, (home of Purdue), Tim Fogerty, will be coming to UD. He apparently had an Achilles problem in his senior year. Not much info. on him in the scouting networks. He did make an 'all Indiana' team though.

JEFFERSON FOOTBALL. . .

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Careers don't end when Division I dreams die
By NATHAN BAIRD posted 2/07/08
nbaird@journalandcourier.com

Sometime during his junior year at Lafayette Jeff, Timmy Fogarty mentally circled Feb. 6, 2008, on his calendar.

That was the first day players across the nation could sign national letters of intent to accept football scholarships at Division I programs.

Fogarty, who visited Clemson, Iowa, Northwestern and Purdue before his senior year, expected to put ink to paper with a Bowl Championship Series school.

Those expectations vanished the moment Fogarty's Achilles tendon ruptured during a Sept. 28 game against Avon at the RCA Dome. Fogarty's high school career ended, as did his recruitment by most of the schools that once courted him.

"They kind of just threw me away, didn't think that I could get back from it," said Fogarty, a three-year starter at quarterback and the 2006 Journal & Courier Big School Offensive Player of the Year.

"It was definitely disappointing. Everyone's dream when they're a kid is they want to play Division I. But it's all right. You start looking around, and there's other places."

Fogarty, who has narrowed his decision to a preferred walk-on role at Ball State or a spot at Division I-AA non-scholarship Dayton, joins the majority of high school football players who aspire to play collegiately. Though they won't accept Division I scholarship offers, their decision-making process can be just as complicated and nerve-racking.

"When you're not going Division I, there are so many different opportunities that you can explore," said South Newton senior Ben Welsh, the J&C's 2007 Small School Offensive Player of the Year. "Sometimes it's a little overwhelming because there are so many different ways you can go."

Fogarty was fortunate to play for a Class 5A program in a respected conference, and with a pass-oriented offense that showcased his abilities. For many players, attracting college interest is the first obstacle.

Players at Class A and 2A programs battle the stigma that their accomplishments don't measure up because they came against lesser competition. The problem is compounded when those teams don't advance deep into the postseason, where college scouts are more likely to see them play.

"A lot of (opposing) coaches gave out my name to colleges," said Chase Simmons, who rushed for 1,620 yards and 17 touchdowns as a Clinton Central senior and now has NAIA program Marian College atop his list of schools. "At the same time, I had to do some contacting people just because they haven't heard of me."

West Lafayette coach Marshall Overley said coaches eagerly share information about opposing players when talking to colleges about their own players. He and other Region 4 coaches have discussed holding a scouting combine for college coaches to help promote area players.

While Division I football has grown into a multi-million dollar enterprise at most schools, priorities are different at lower divisions. Players are rewarded as much or more for their academic prowess as their athletic pedigree.

Welsh threw for 3,208 yards and 40 touchdowns as a senior and helped the Rebels return to the sectional championship game. But the offers he's currently weighing from Dayton and Division II Hillsdale might not be on the table if he didn't also own a GPA approaching 4.0 and rank fifth in his class.

Welsh may have to begin his college search all over again if he secures a Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, which awards full tuition for four years but only to Indiana schools.

"All of these schools I'm looking at have pretty good reputations as far as the academic side," said Welsh, who received college search advice from his sister, Jennifer, who plays Division I volleyball at Xavier.

"That's been the biggest key for me, probably, to find out where I want to go. All these places that I'm coming down to, I wouldn't have the opportunity to even look at if I hadn't been doing as well in the classroom."

Though the glory and prestige may not equate, non-Division I programs can allow athletes to continue their careers without the demands those upper-division players face.

"I love football, but at the same time, I'm going to go and get my education and have the college experience," Simmons said. "At Division I schools, (football) is your life. I kind of want to get in the NAIA, Division II range so I can have a life at the same time."

Defensive Back Jake Conforti Coming to UD!!

http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/b...TI_WEB.article

We landed Jake over Butler! Nice! By the way, notice that his other options were all Division I programs!!

Geneva's Conforti chooses Dayton

March 7, 2008
BY JIM OWCZARSKI jowczarski@scn1.com
Geneva senior Jake Conforti, a Beacon News All-Area first team defensive back, will continue his football career next fall for the University of Dayton Flyers.

Conforti, who had four interceptions for the Vikings last season, came back from a severe knee injury in 2006. He is projected as a safety at 6-1, 203 pounds, but there is a chance he could move to linebacker

“Their facilities were great, everything about them is great, they’re winning, it’s a Division I program,” Conforti said. “It’s great to be wanted. It sold me.”

The senior waited until now to commit though because Butler University recruited him heavily and he weighed walk on opportunities at Northern Illinois University, Illinois State University and Iowa.

Ultimately, Dayton was the choice.

“I decided to go where I was wanted,” Conforti said.

The Flyers went 11-1 overall last year and earned the Sports Network Cup, which is awarded to the No. 1 team at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Mid-Major level. Former head coach Mike Kelly, who offered Conforti, retired in January after 27 years as the head coach. Conforti accepted, and will play under new coach Rick Chamberlin.

“His instincts are just incredible,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski told the Beacon on Feb. 6. “He’s a real natural football player. I think he’s going to have a great career wherever he goes. Maybe if he didn’t have the speed bump, he’d go higher mid-major, high Division I.”

Choosing football not easy for Welsh
By NATHAN BAIRD
nbaird@journalandcourier.com

South Newton senior Ben Welsh had a lot of tough decisions to make regarding his college choice.

In-state or out? Big or small? Football or basketball?

In the end, Welsh says the school made the decision for him. Last month he verbally committed to the University of Dayton football program.

"I really liked the coaches there and felt that I fit in with the players that are already there," said Welsh, who will play free safety for the Flyers. "The whole time I was there I felt comfortable and knew it was where I wanted to go."

Welsh totaled 93 tackles, five interceptions, 10 passes broken up and a pair of touchdowns for South Newton last season. He also threw for 3,208 yards and 40 touchdowns and rushed for 817 yards and eight scores in his only season as the Rebels' starting quarterback.

Welsh also averaged 19.4 points, 6.3 assists and 5.9 rebounds for South Newton's state-ranked basketball team this winter. He said the hardest decision was choosing which sport to play in college. He also considered Drake and Hillsdale for football and Rose-Hulman and McKendree College for basketball.

"As far as what I wanted to play I was split right down the middle," said Welsh, who plans to study electrical engineering. "I really couldn't decide what I wanted to do. Either one I would've been happy with."

Welsh's Dayton teammates will include Lafayette Jeff quarterback Timmy Fogarty, who also committed to the Flyers last month.

You may remember a while back an article posted that referenced both of these players. Ben Welsh sounds like one heck of an athlete! He was actually torn between college basketball and football! He sounds a great deal like another player on our roster, (Steve Vallentino )! He should be a great addition to the Flyer Football team! I wonder if Ben would consider walking on to the basketball team?

Glad to see we landed Timmy Fogarty as well. You might recall that he was being recruited by several FBS teams before he suffered an injury. He has a great deal of upside, and could very well be a star for the Flyers during his time at Dayton!

I have heard of another recruit, a transfer from Bimidji State in MN, a defensive line player. I believe he will have to sit out a year.

Bimidji State is a Division II school in Minnesota. I think that if a kid "transfers up", ( Division II to Division I-AA ), he is eligible right away. I linked the roster from their website above, I would guess that is would be one of the freshman. According to their recruiting information, they are bringing in 40 or so recruits! Maybe this player saw the writing on the wall, and decided to find a better opportunity to play.

Many Division II players are on partial scholarships, so an athletic/need based grant from UD could be "competitive". As such, I'm also betting that he is a good student.

My best guess in looking at their roster:

http://www.bemidjistate.edu/athletic...sels_david.JPG

David Ghysels, Redshirt Freshman, ( so at least four years of eligibility left ), 6' 1", 234 lbs., Defensive Tackle from Springboro, OH.

Glad to hear of a promising DL recruit. Many folks think finding outstanding DL players for any level is extremely difficult. With the QB play in the PFL at very high levels, if you do not have a great DL, it is going to be a long season!

So far, the information that has become available on our 2008 recruits is very promising! Good to see, especially after MK retired!

Now, when exactly is that Spring game?

GO FOOTBALL FLYERS!!!!!

Nice one got away

Something must have gotten into the drinking water from Lake Erie because that is the only answer to strange things happening to some football recruits in NE Ohio.

Lake Erie College, last year a club team and now preparing to enter Div.II, has landed the heralded QB, Sean Bedevlsky from Brunswick High. Bedevlsky is the 6' 180# spread formation QB took conference champ Brunswick High to the Div. 1 Regional semi's last season where he lost to Mentor and Ohio Mr. Football, Bart Tanski. Sean chose LEC over Dayton, Div.II Findlay and powerhouse Div.III Mt. Union. Amazing!

BTW, Ohio Mr. Football (Tanski) turned down UD and also made a strange choice. He will walk-on at Bowling Green!

UD needs to come up with something to overcome the drinking water?

I guess that I am not too surprised.... With UD having landed Timmy Fogerty, a QB that was a true FBS prospect before his injury, this kid may have seen the writing on the wall. He is small by today's QB standards, ( although fairly typical for a UD QB ). My guess is that he really wants to play QB, and play soon. At UD, he would probably not play at all as a freshman, and then he would have to beat out a potentially good Timmy Fogerty just in his class.... Not to mention the QB's already on the roster. I also have a strange feeling that his college choice may also be the best from a financial perspective for his family. He may have even landed a full ride, if he is their top recruit. Still, it is always kind of cool when a kid chooses a lower division school, kind of going against conventional wisdom. Most folks refuse to believe that ever happens.... You know like say a Kevin Hoyng choosing a Dayton and debt so that he could play QB rather than taking an FBS scholarship to play DB....

Hopefully, in Kevin's case, he can pay off all that debt with his NFL signing bonus!!

Now that the schedule is out, can the recruit list be far behind?

The Gentleman from Michigan asked the question.

While there is no answer available, from history we remember that on Wednesday, May 23, 2007, the DDN published the 2007 UD football recruits! But who keeps track of those things? This year may be different...this year IS different.

Another thing that is different is that last year we "dug up" a larger number of recruits on our own from other sources. Of course there were a few who made newsprint but never did arrive. The "cold war" of football recruiting is as secrative in Dayton as ever! (do svidan'a)

Several kids from Western PA, including another lineman from my high school, Bethel Park, PA! Very large class as well! I am looking forward to learning more about each player. Nice to finally have the list!

Brian Mulcahy and Ben Miller

http://wissports.net/sports/football....asp?nid=14683

-According to Milwaukee Marquette quarterback Brian Mulcahy (5-11, 183), both he and Marquette running back Ben Miller (6-0, 184) have given their verbal commitments to the University of Dayton.

A WFCA and Associated Press honorable-mention all-state selection, Mulcahy completed 102-of-168 passing attempts for 1,237 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Miller also received WFCA and Associated Press honorable-mention all-state honors. He totaled 201 carries for 1,689 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior.

Both agreed to play for Dayton way back in early February! Kind of cool to land two kids form the same high school up in Wisconsin!

Yes, it does look like a nice class for UD. Bethel Park always had good football teams; I played at Ford City. Also played football at Carnegie-Mellon with a friend who played at Bethel Park. He was a very good football player.

Brian Mack

Always of interest to me:

"He started to get interest after his junior season and received phone calls throughout the fall this past season. He also considered offers from Colgate, Robert Morris and Washington & Jefferson."

W&J also recruited lineman Billy Bair from Bethel Park. Very nice to see that Brian picked the Flyers over Robert Morris and Colgate, two pretty good FCS programs!

Sounds like a great athlete. I like his size as a running back and he seems to have great hands.

Thumbs up Some NE Ohio Recruits

Saturday morning Mark Gokavi of the DDN posted the recruits for 2008. Our football program was a full month ahead of last season with this timing because the recruits were invited to Sunday's Spring Game. Most attended and were introduced to the team at midfield after the game. They were also introduced to their "Big Brother" which generated the big cheers we heard.

It was good to see four from NE Ohio. They played on good teams but I'm not familiar with their performance except for one.

Mentor was the #1 computer ranked Div.1 team in the NE Region but lost the state final to Cinci Xavier. Mentor's spread offense QB was Mr. Ohio Football but he turned down Dayton and will walk-on at Bowling Green. His favorite target (apparently for 5 years) chose the Flyers and Tyler Shutz, 6-2, 195# was introduced Sunday. It was a thing of beauty to watch Tyler hookup with Bart Tanski for their final two seasons at Mentor; they just seemed to know how to connect. Hope our QB can find Tyler 'cause he can catch & run.

The #2 computer ranking for Div.1 NE Region was St. Ignatius. We have brothers coming to UD, Matt & Nick Shurtleff. The paper said they were defensive backs. I tried to glean something from the school's web site but couldn't find anything except in the school records. Seems that a Nick Shurtleff holds the record for longest TD run from scrimmage - 98 yards in 2006. So apparently he can run the 100 pretty well!

Mayfield High always has a tough bunch out for football and last season they were the #6 computer ranked in Div.2 and made it to their Regional final. Bill Petraiuolo is listed at 6-1, 240# OL. I think he played some center at Mayfield.

Glad to see a few more coming from NE Ohio and glad that most played Div.1 ball on very good teams.

There is a lot of good football played in northern Ohio, establishing a pipeline there would really help the program.

A fast class???

The webmaster was busy Friday and the roster is updated.I look for an identity each season. Remember that two years ago I wrote about the 2006 unit being the tallest of any recent class. It was loaded with DB's and only 2 each QB's & RB's. Of the QB's, one left the team and the other is a WR (this is the second season in a row with a 5th year starting QB).

Last year the 2007 recruits had 16 out of 24 hs team captains and the OL averaged 266#. There were half as many DB's but 6 LB's. It's two QB's are still on the squad but the two RB's are not.

The 2008 freshman may be the fastest team if only because an unusual number (8)were on their hs track team not baseball. In fact RB Harris is the 100-200-400 meter champ in his school (or conference). The Shurtliff twins have qualified for states in the last 2 and 3 years. Another RB, Jacob, holds his school rushing record. Of the three QB's, two are listed as punters too!

The 2008 group has two pairs of teammates - QB Mulcahy & RB Miller played at Marquette, WI and of course the Shurtleff twins from Cleveland St. Ignatius. There are two fornmer hockey players and a lacrosse player; and I predict we'll see more lacrosse players as the sport is catching on fast. Finally, Detroit Flyer is pleased that now two roster spots are from Bethel Park, PA.

Here is how the numbers look:

.............................2008.............2007.................2006

Kickers/Punters.............0*.............. .1...................... 2

Secondary....................8..................5. ................... 10

Linebackers ..................4................ 6...................... 2

Defensive line ...............4................ 3...................... 3

Quarterbacks .................3................1............... ....... 2

Running Backs ................4...............2................. ..... 2

Pass Receivers ................5...............2................. ..... 5

Offensive line ..................5...............4............... ....... 6

Total .............................33............24..... ............... . 32

* Two QB's listed as punters

Phil DeBoer

http://www.pioneerlocal.com/elmwoodp...207-s1.article

From the article:

"The line is anchored by senior captain Phil DeBoer. The Big Ten recruit knows what it takes to get the team going and his younger teammates will follow his lead."

As I was looking over the roster, Phil's size caught my eye.... He is listed at 6' 4" and 260 lbs. He is currently listed as a DT. The article above from before the 2007 season indicated that he was being recruited by Big Ten schools. He certainly has great size for an FCS DT, and he is certainly not typical of UD's freshman DT's in the past. Probably a good name to remember going forward!

Nice work DF. This is exciting to ponder.

If our website Roster/Media Guide biography was worth any salt, there would be something more about DeBoer's football and less about his hockey team. BTW, what the heck gives with our biography the past two years. It is getting really skinny. Are we ashamed of something? Does Phil have parents or is UD paying his way?

Last night on The Rick Chamberlin Show, Tyler was one of the guests. Coach Chamberlin indicated that we do not travel to Wisconsin to recruit football players.... He went on to say that Tyler was spotted at a camp for Northwestern. Kevin Johns, our former QB and now recruiting coordinator for Northwestern thought Tyler would be a perfit fit for the Flyers. He let us know and as they say, the rest is history! That Northwestern connection has proven to be fertile ground for our Flyers! Of course Tyler's desire to "play early" came true at Duquesne last Saturday.
