Kyle Seyfried - QB

Kyle Seyfried - Wyoming, (Cincy), QB. Committed yesterday. Chose Dayton over Butler!

http://rivals.yahoo.com/dayton/footb...eyfried-103472

I'll try the link, but these Rivals links often times do not work well....

Running Back Connor Kacsor

http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pb...101220324/1002

"Leo's Kacsor to continue football career at University of Dayton

Leo High School senior Connor Kacsor has made a verbal commitment to continue his football career next season at the University of Dayton. Kacsor, who suffered a knee injury during the first game of the sectional this season, rushed for 1,559 yards and 23 touchdowns and was named to The News-Sentinel PrepSports All-Area team."

Seems to be another recruiting target for UD.... Kids that may have been recruited as FBS level players if not for injury.... Probably a good strategy. Get this kid to UD, redshirt him as a freshman, completely rehab the injury and you end up with a potentially great player.

WR - Shaquille Tensley

Not sure that messageboard banter qualifies as "confirmation" but I'll post it here anyway....

OK, Scout confirms it so I say welcome to the University of Dayton Shaquille.

Thumbs up Anthony Davis - Rivals 2 Star Coming to UD!

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/footbal...y-Davis-101232

From Warren Central in Indianapolis, UD lands a Rivals 2 Star running back! Same school as current Flyer Howard Savage and the WR recruit listed above.

This class is really shaping up nicely. Pretty cool to get a committment from a 2-star BEFORE national signing day!

Guess I saw him play against Cleveland St.Edward on Dec.4th. I mainly watched their QB, Braxton Miller!

My searching for Michael Bonner, DB from Huber Htrs says he committed to Buffalo on Dec.15th, 2010.

Has anything changed?

Michigan QB commits to the Flyers - Luke Johnson

http://rivals.yahoo.com/centralmichi...Johnson-101899

Good size and sounds like he has a strong arm. That makes two QB's already in the fold, BEFORE national signing day.

It sure seems to me like Dayton and the rest of the PFL are gaining commitments earlier than in the past. I hope that means that PFL schools are more of a first choice for players now compared to the past....

This rivals site still shows only Dayton among his schools. It could be that rivals just has not caught up with him yet. Two stars are about the top of the PFL range and the bottom of the FBS range. If he did get a full ride from Buffalo, that is good for him.

Mighty Mites of Warren Central

Last season UD football saw more freshman get playing time than any recent years. One of them was #83, Howard Savage, a CB who had 3 solo tackles and 10 assists. The 5’11” – 175# defender came from Warren Central High in Indianapolis, a school with a long football history and championship caliber in recent years.

Now we read about two more Warren Central players committing to Dayton. I call them the Mighty Mites because they are all of 5’8” high!

The No.1 high school rusher in the State of Indiana (and #34 nationwide) is Warren’s #28 Anthony Davis. [amazingly the #2 rusher is his teammate 5’9” Dionte Buckley]. Davis hits holes quick, is a fine receiver and downfield blocker. His 5’8” frame carries 190# which helped him average 187.9 yards per game. His 40 time & vertical jump numbers are not great, but don’t know who graded him. But I do know that a recent recruit never averaged what Anthony Davis did last year to earn his 2-star rating.

Another Mighty Mite is 5’8”-165# wide receiver Shaquille Tensley [Yes, we’ll have a Shaq]. The Warren Central receiver wearing #87 seems to have decent speed and caught passes from a left handed QB, much like the kid from Wyoming High (Cincy) who is also a committed recruit at Dayton. Couldn’t find many stats for Shaq; don’t think they passed often like UD because they had the #1 & #2 ball carriers in the state!!

So three from one Indy school on the UD roster in 2011 reminds us of three – excuse me four – from Solon High on the 2010 Dayton team. QB Valentino preceded LB Joe Janasek who was followed by QB Jake Voigt while Secondary Coach Kevin McCoy played in 2003-06. Interesting how these avenues seem to open and relationships between our coaches and high school coaches develops.

Connor Kacsor, best ever at Leo High?

Connor Kacsor at 5'-11' and 185# might be the fastest of this years RB recruits (4.48). Some posters have said that he could be the best RB in Leo High (Ft. Wayne, IN) history. A report said his rehab of a knee injury was doing well. He was injured in playoffs. Maybe his 1559 yards and 23 TD's fell short of history because of injury, but like Detroit Flyer has often said, injuries are reasons some athletes don't get big school offers and end up on PFL teams.

The following is a team highlight from one game. Connor Kascor is #5 at RB in black jersey:

Kyle Seyfried Southpaw Slinger

My sister had a bumper sticker that said, "Lefties have Rights too!"

Remember that when Wyoming High (Cincy) QB Kyle Seyfried arrives. When you are Player of the Year in Ohio, even if it's Div.III, even if you're left handed, welcome to Dayton football.

Kyle is 6'1" and 195/200# with a short snappy motion. Most of his highlight reel throws from 2010 are long rainbows which only happen on occasion in the PFL because of rushing defenders. He onlt ran once but he throws a couple ropes. After all, it was his highlights not just first down or possession plays. Too bad I couldn't find that link again.

For Kyle, 2009 may have been better because of his supporting cast. His highlights are better and he does run as you can see if this link works.

Kyles 2009 highlight:
http://www.scoutingohio.com/index.ph...3870&srid=3391

Forget it, on 02/02/2011 Kyle decided to enroll at Miami University & walk-on to try for a scholarship.

Special Notes

Some special notes on some of those mentioned above

Matt Brown DE: Has preferred walk on offer to OU & Toledo. Preseason rated as a top DE prospect in the state by JJHuddle.

Evan Luse DB: Very physical corner with some speed; state finalist for sprint relays.

Chris Pohlman & Kyle Matula FB/LB: Both look like traditional tough nosed FBs & MLB who might not be the most athletically gifted but will hit you in the mouth.

Kyle Tomko: My favorite of the players listed. Aggressive Safety with very good ball skills & some ability in the return game to go along with it.

Chuck Zavarella: Also holds an offer from D1 Air Force. Great size question speed & ability to seperate though.

Colin McManamon, big, red-haired WR

Gosh it is nice to see a recruit coming from a Div.1 Ohio State Champ team. St. Edward beat Huber Hts. Wayne for that title but they clobbered St. X, Moeller, St.Ignatius, Mentor, Glenville and Solon before that!

With an OL averaging 290# (!!!!!) St. Ed ran a lot, 268 yds/game. The defense was great. Passing wise there were two good receivers catching an avg. of 115 yds. and Colin McManamon had 33 catches for 550 yds. and 5 TD. At 6'2" 188# he has nice size and good speed at a clocked 4.55. He could also play in front of KO returner Gary Hunter and would not disappoint if he got a kick. This is a nice addition.

His senior uni number was 11 but as a junior he was #10 and I prefer the highlight video from 2009. Click on highlight tape, it will start soon.

Big Walnut DE Matt Brown can get bigger

Matt Brown played DE on a Regional final team with only 240# on his 6'3" frame. But that's probably because he wanted to wrestle again at 215#. A news report on the Big Walnut wrestlers said that Matt would not return because he needed shoulder surgery so he could play college football. Lets hope all is healing and that without weight to maintain, Big Brown can be even a bigger Flyer.

Brown was offered Preferred Walk-on status at Ohio U. and Toledo (Seems that several other recruits had this kind of D-1 offer). Instead he will have a roster spot at UD. He's quick & strong (watch for his one-armed stop & tackle in the video) and a good student, probably in Engineering.

More interesting.....

For me it's actually more interesting to discuss sports and general university happenings rather than men's BB. While there is no doubt that men's hoops is the heart of UD athletics, Priders are so passionate and their posts so numerous that following the BB Flyers on UDPride is like taking a drink from a fire hose.

Could not agree more!!! I don't touch the basketball forum with a 10-foot pole. I sure enjoy discussing football, vball, and women's bball with you more distinguished gentlemen (and women, dear...). I hope we can continue to keep these discussion boards civil.

Hello to all in winter-wonderland

Nice to hear from posters in the winter regions who are probably tired of more than UD basketball; say snow!

Actually the reason your are on this thread is that a major change has occured since last year. From the Michiganders sticky post of 1/01/2010 to 2/01/2010 there were 3 committed recruits we knew about. In fact the school and local newspaper never posted a list until just before the spring game.

Look what we know already this year! fballflyer has a good connection & posts quickly. Must be our need in a social networking society is getting this news to the media more than ever before. Also I've taken notice to more walk-on or preferred walk-on status offered to our recruits by D-1's. Nor so many Air Force & Army offers showing up (they must offer a great number).

Anyway, this is a fun winter so keep in touch and HOPE for a NIT bid.

Waubonsie Valley's Devon Morgan

The latest commitment comes by way of Aurora, IL and Waubonsie Valley High School.

Now that's a mouthfull and 6'2", 210# DE/RB Devon Morgan will try an easier name for college like Dayton. He is an All-Conference selection although I don't know what a 8A school is.

He played defensive end most of the time and carried the ball a few times per game, probably short yardage or goal line. His 2008 highlight showed him at fullback, catching a flare pass and running a long distance. But by 2010 he was anchored on the defensive line.

The Waubonsie High off-school athletic site has the 2011 schedule posted and has wiped off the senior names from the uniform number chart so we have to go with recruit site info.

I'll try the link, but these Rivals links often times do not work well....

Looks like we lost Kyle as he is now a preferred walk-on at Miami....

Go deep, Luke Johnson's throwing

Luke Johnson looks like a classic 6'2"/6'3", 185#/195# slinging QB. His video is loaded with long rainbows but very accurate; hardly any jumping or diving required so I see a very catchable passer. Would you believe that he talked & prodded his coach to change the offense for him? Yes, he transferred to Milford, MI from Texas as a soph. They played football fall & spring in Texas, and the spread was the choice. He got to camps a few times too! So Milford changed to spread two years ago.

He doesn't seem to run much, but can very well and he holds the ball away from his head a bit so his 3/4 motion won't make pros happy, but it doesn't seem to bother Luke's success.

Two links follow: one with an interview before the season and the second his highlights.

Another St. X Defender, Jake Rumpke

Just as 3-time All-PFL linebakcer Joe Ries from St. Xavier leaves and freshman Nick Weston moves up another season, we welcome newcomer Jake Rumpke.

Jake is 6' (maybe) and 185# DB who played a couple seasons at St. X. He had 3 intercepts and apparently 8 tackles per game. Stats are sketchy and no highlight video available.

Pat Benton kicks a loong way

Pat Benton is 5'11"/6' 0", 170#/175# and is a long legged kicker.

Pat kicked for Div.IV Johnstown Monroe High (Newark area) and his 10 X-points in one game got his name into the OHSAA record book! He also kicked 3 field goals in one game.

Now his highlight video may bore you - how can you watch KO after KO go into the end zone? Notice that unlike some who end up in the air with their kicking leg over head, Pat pooch kicks them into the end zone. Amazing! But his hop step before a placekick may have to go.

Zach Elias, FS & much more

Zach Elias may be a good athlete but for sure he is a great person.

Listed as a FS from Loveland High, he is about 5'11" and 175#. But these are the exciting stats. One site posted him at 4.43 in the 40 and a 38" vertical jump. If true he is faster than Tino and jumps higher than anybody in UD football. (Guess we'll have to see about all this)

I couldn't find any video or defensive stats for Zach. He did return punts & KO's some games not others (ask the stat guy because sometimes there were there not enough KO returns listed for the scores made)

Zach the person must be special. He had a good friend & teammate, Justin Diaz, whose mother faces a cancer battle. Unable to work, the mother's health insurance was a financial drain. Zach spearheaded a fundraiser for the family which later grew into a charity account at a bank. Zach claimed the team was all a "family" and Justin needed help.

Love your analogy of the BB board and drinking from a fire hose. Used to go their quite a bit but now not so much. Same posters ranting over and over, gets old. football board seems more factual and even handed. And I like the football team as much as I do basketball. Try to come up from Florida once or twice a year for games.

Preffered Walk Ons

On scoutingohio.com it is now showing that UDs one time commit Kyle Seyfried is now going to BGSU to be a preffered walk on instead of Miami (OH) as it was reported yesterday.

Also Robbie Plagens another QB that UD had offered decided to turn us down for a chance to be a preffered walk on at Miami OH

Maybe they were just scared off by Luke Johnson comitting

Dustin Howell get "Gaudy"

"Gaudy stats" is the apt description by fballflyer of Kenton High's WR Dustin Howell. Yes catching the ball 183 times for 2,906 yards and 29 TD in 3 years are big numbers. But then, he only caught 21% (by my math) of QB Maty Mauk's passing yardage (13,519 yards with a senior season to go!).

Dustin checks into UD at 5'11" and 180#. Avg. speed but he can jump out of his shoes. WOW, what numbers! Check his highlight & select the "Senior" video at the bottom of link.
http://www.scoutingohio.com/index.ph...1117&srid=5930

Just in case you want to see the No.1 passer in Ohio & No.2 in the Nation (& brother of Ben Mauk) try this link. You'll see the kid can run & put his shoulder into a tackler. You'll also see #8 Dustin in many of the plays. <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZL6opMRFN5A...</param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZL6opMRFN5A...dded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>

DE Jack Beebe is another big guy from Dublin Jerome. Oh, he's not as big as Jerome's Tyler Friedrich was at 6'6 but Jack's 6'2" 225# frame is about the size of a former teammate Sean Sward, a UD soph. LB.

Look quickly for #41 in the video; it doesn't give much "get ready time". He may be at either end, but probably the short side of the field.

Mike Laudizio has been recruited as a DB from Plainfield North High (Chicago area). Here's a challenge for you, find some stats on him!

He is #6 in this 2009 highlight video. His best plays are near the end. He probably improved his attack his senior year.

How does UD "offer" when it does not give schollies? What does an "offer" mean? I understand UD "recruiting" an athlete, and I realize there are aid packages put together - need and academic based. Would those not be available regardless - even if the athlete comes to UD and does not play football.

As to signing an LOI - which many do - What does it mean other than the student athlete cannot go elsewhere without sitting out a year. Does it mostly soldify for UD who will be the incoming freshmen? Does it also lock in the need/academic aid?

Need someone to help me out please.

No LOI for football players. UD's and the PFL's players are basically verbally committing. There is nothing binding about it. In fact, a kid can come to a PFL school and quit football completely and still keep his aid. Still, PFL players are heavily recruited. The best PFL programs have a strong profile they go after, (good students that qualify for academic aid), certain majors, (Engineering for example), etc. I would say that PFL schools work much harder than traditional athletic scholarship schools to find FCS level players. Dayton is among the best at it.... It is actually pretty rare for a kid to not honor his verbal committment to a PFL school. It does happen and has happened at UD but it is not common.

Yes, Welcome to Dylan Dearwester for our defense. He played MLB at Tippacanoe. Is a good hitter. In 11 games he had 55 solo tackles, 37 assists, 2 sacks & 2 TFL. As a shot puter, last year he put it 37'-11.75".

The question regards EXACTLY how tall is he. Depending on the source he is 6'-199#, 6'1"-200#, 6'2"-200# or 6'3"-200#.

Marysville Linebacker

In regards to Dylan Dearwester, the LB from Marysville HS, after some more research & talking to a family friend from the Marysville area, I would say he is around the 6'1 height!

Also found some clips from his junior season. Very good pursuit to the ball & how about that second play. Talk about a big hit on kick off!!!!!

I asked coach Kelly this question on Sunday at the vball banquet. Coach Kelly said that they have a limited number of offers they make each year based upon position. He said that when a player gives a commitment they almost never change their mind.

Not to worry...

....about blocking. With Tino finally gone to the immense relief of PFL opponents, the leagure has announced that UD will be allowed to play with 13 men instead of 11, so long as the extra two are linemen.

6'0/6'1 250-265

It sure looks like they are bringing in some great athletes. I agree with what a lot of you are saying...If one or two of these quarterbacks play to their potential, UD may be taking a huge leap in progress towards the playoffs. These are exciting times for me. I can't wait to see where the next few years takes us.

O Line

Gramps is right, we will need to bring in a fresh cadre of OL'men. For next year, we have 3 of the starting 5 returning, with the two new starters in their redshirt 4th year at UD. So, the offensive line will be fine for next season. But it seems to be difficult in recruiting them overall.

Special Teams Boost

Local star punter Kyle Pignatiello committed to UD this morning. He has quite the resume & probably is the highest rated punter to ever come to UD! Cant wait for the improved special teams!!!

Punter Pignatiello

Great to have an Italian punter coming to our team

Ever since fbflyer posted that it was a possibility we could have Kyle as well as Pat Benton, I checked Scoutingohio daily, until today. And today it was a lock! Way to go UD!.

Pignatiello isn't very tall at 5'9" but packs 185# behind his foot. Just kick it high & far baby!

OK DetroitFlyer, there is a punter coming averaging over 45 yards (if he doesn't have to play DE too) ranked #2 in the state and in the record books as well and a placekicker who often sends the KO into the end zone and some returners with nice credentials. Maybe your prayers have been answered.

Trying to Understand Recruiting

Hard to even get a "sniff" of an OL or DT that the Flyers want to recruit - at least from Ohio. Could it be some big lineman out there is hiding in another state?

The 2011 list is getting full - perhaps 19 names - and it is sorely absent of interior linemen save one C/long snapper (if punting & place kicking is a hot recruit topic, you need a snapper too).

Now the 2010 roster was not void of linemen by any means. There were 5-FR and 5-RS FR listed as OG/OT. And 2-FR, 2-RS FR listed as DT. This is in addition to last years Soph & JR players. Maybe the wood pile is big enough to 'cool" it for a year?

Maybe the lineman are coming from Western PA. For some reason, uncovering Western PA recruits the last few years has become very difficult. I guess if you are not going to Pitt, Penn State or WV, no one cares.... It also seems as though UD almost never recruits an offensive lineman that is ready to start on day 1. Our guys usually seem to come in around the 240 to 260 pound range. We have to grow them a bit and teach them our system. I seem to remember reading that offensive line is thought to be one of the most difficult positions to master in our system.... I cannot remember the last lineman that we had that was over 300 lbs. We seem to prefer the more athletic guys over the bigger, maybe slower, lineman....

OL, maybe some insight

With OL-men and playing division I, II, or NAIA (scholarship accessible), much emphasis relates to size, with the proviso that 'you can't teach height'. Scholarship programs will take less talent in order to get larger sized players. The Western PA area is tough because of so many scholarship programs and good Div. III programs there in the recruiting base. It's not just Pitt and Penn State, but Robert Morris, Duquesne, Indiana-PA, California State, Edinboro, Clarion, Slippery Rock, W&J, Allegheny, etc., all trying to get the best players. Coming to UD, the OL are not as big. They are just as fast, just as good in footwork, close to or just as strong, brighter academically, with the means (academically, financially, strong character) to play at UD. In many cases, these players are just as talented as those we see at Div. 1 schools, yes, including Ohio State and others, but without the size. Each position is different, but that is the way of the OL-man.

Ryan Aske

Here is an interesting article on Aske...seems to be a typical UD recruit in the way of his versatility...also interesting that he covered another UD recruit in Chuck Zavarella.

There were higher profile players on the Strongsville team like 6'5" TE Ray Hamilton going to Iowa and OT Dave Kaminski going to Indiana. But nobody was on the field and in the mix more than Ryan Aske. After Hamilton, Ryan was the receiver of choice in 2010 with 668 yards and 5 TD's. You can ask him about the Mayfield game where he had a TD and got the best of Zavarella; just don't ask Aske about the trick play that Solon used last year as time ran out. Yes, Ryan probably played against Jake Voigt from Solon two years ago.

Without a video, we'll have to wait for the coaches to decide his fate - receiver or safety. I know they prefer defenders to be heavier than 165#.

Justin McCarthy, DE

A DE, Justin McCarthy, from Div.III State Champ Bishop Watterson in Columbus is the latest to commit to the Flyers.

Justin is 6'1", 235#, had 55 tackles. He seems to be strong, with a low center of gravity. Not quite as quick off the ball as Devon Langhorst but once going, Justin moves well for the hit.

It looks like we did a great job of adding players with speed. I still find it hard to believe that we have one offensive lineman

Sneak Peek

Cant wait till the spring game when we can get a sneak peek at the incoming recruits. Have heard around 28 high schoolers will be in attendance which means there are still some incoming guys we have not sniffed out! Overall its an exciting time for UD football now that spring ball is here!!!

UD Linemen recruits kinda thin?

Maybe we will have an invisible line someday. Maybe some redshirt frosh or sophs will NEED to be 5th year guys down the road. Where's the beef?

I do know where some big ones are at though. I think Wake Forest, that itty, bitty college in the ACC with 60% of the enrolment of UD, has ten guys over 300 lbs. and half are super-heavyweights at over 320". Now that's a "visible" line.

Just signed Friday... Lee Bailey from Detroit Country Day

http://www.daytondailynews.com/dayto...t-1138933.html

according to the DDN.

"MAKING A PITCH: About 20 UD football signees attended the game, and one of them, Detroit Country Day’s Lee Bailey, is a two-sport star who just played in a basketball all-star game Friday with erstwhile Flyer hoop recruits LaDontae Henton and Percy Gibson.

Bailey and Henton were AAU teammates last summer.

“He said he’s taking another visit. I’m not sure where,” Bailey said. “I try to tell him to come here still now that I’m a Dayton guy.

“That’s my guy. I think that might have a little impact on him.”

Bailey said he and Gibson played on the AAU circuit together a few years ago. “I just signed Friday,” Bailey said. “I’m going to talk to both of them, give them my piece.”

Over on the basketball board they are talking about him walking on to the basketball team as well. I have not looked up his position yet, but sure sounds interesting....

http://www.legends247.com/ngs/?p=903

Kind of an old article but it mentions that he runs hurdles, plays point guard, and maybe cornerback for football. I saw some stats where he ran the ball and caught a pass or two. He seems like a very talented athlete and good kid. This is a great pick up for UD Football!

DDN posts recruit list

It's been nearly a month with this thread, holding at 22 known recruits. but now we know of 32! Here are some beefy guys. And three OL!

OL, Mitch Ford, 6'3", 220#, Harrison High
Team played in Fort Ancient Valley Conf. - now that's learning SW Ohio

OL, Soern Osborne, 5'11", 205#
Naperville, IL is a busy football city but I can't find any more.

OL, Terry Cole, somewhere around Pittsburgh
No, he is not the former Steeler.

DT, Pat Barrett, 6'2", 240#
St. X High

DE/LB, Austin Alber, 6'3", 235#
Brookeville High, All-SWBL League

Possibly the last of the recruits we know

QB, Joe Spahr, 6'3", 205#
At St. Charles Prep (Westerville?) he threw for 1020 yds & ran for 1060.

LB, Jimmy Bonner, 6'1", 205#
The Jimmy Bonner I found at Loyola Academy in Chicago played DB. Listing him as a LB may be where UD plans to use him.

LB, Jim Turvey, 6'2", 195#
At Bishop Fenwick, this kid played RB, WR, DB, SS, P. I've seen his name for many months as undecided on Scouting Ohio which rated him as a top athlete for Class of 2011!!! He was recruited by Butler. For now, we should just think ATH!

LB, Tommy Zervas, 6'1", 212#
At Bexley High (Ohio) he was MSL All-League, Def. POY

DB, Matt Bianco, (no size available anywhere, probably small?)
O.K. Coach, you call him a DB, but please try him at RB a bit. Last year at Strongsville he ran 238 carries for 1362 yards and 18 TD's. Now during track he runs the 4x100, 4x200 and long jump. He is a teammate of Ryan Aske, our WR recruit and Matt turned down going to OSU, his parents alma mater, so he could play football! The other Strongsville buddy, OL/LS Zach Sedivey chose Butler. Be carefull about mentioning that Matt & Ryan played Solon because they lost in OT.

DB, Mitch Sanders, 6'3", 185#
This may be a story like Connor Kacsor because Mitch was a starter as a Soph & Jr years at Farmington Hills, MI before tearing his ACL last summer at a Central Michigan Camp. I don't believe he played a down in 2010 when he was expected to be one of the best in the area. Now he can be a good DB/SS at UD.

Finally, we may has lost one. Not on the DDN list is Jon Hanes a LS from Moeller High.

What's with Ross Smith?

Website Scouting Ohio had a strange post yesterday for a commitment of a UD recruit. He is from the Class of 2010 and was recruited by Dayton, Butler, Morehead, Urbana, Holy Cross, etc. last year. It sounds like he may have delayed college a year. Does anybody know how Ross Smith from Olentangy Orange ends up a UD recruit in 2011?

Ross Smith is a long strider at 6'2" and 185# and went deep, averaging 30 yards per catch with 6 long TD's. His speed is good at 4.5 and quickness good at 4.0 in shuttle. He is an excellent down field blocker and carries a 3.7 GPA.

Wonder what a year can do - good or bad?

The Holy Cross comment got me thinking.... (I hate to lose recruiting battles for Ohio kids to Holy Cross). It looks like he was on the Holy Cross roster. Maybe he is transferring to UD in order to be closer to home? It would be VERY difficult for his family to see him play out in the Northeast.... Or maybe it is just a mistake? I guess we will have to see if he shows up at UD in the fall....

"sophomore wide out Ross Smith (Lewis Center, Ohio) added three catches for 53 yards"

So.... Ross played in the Holy Cross Spring game back in April and made three catches.... He did not play in 2010 so I would assume that he has four years of eligibility left, (much like how UD does not play many freshman). I cannot find any additional confirmation that he has left Holy Cross besides the Scouting Ohio website. Even there they do not say he transferred, they just indicate a commitment to the Flyers. My cousins son goes to HC, maybe I can ask her.... I'm not sure that I understand the FCS to FCS transfer rules for a redshirt freshman like Ross. I will have to ask one of my experts....

One last observation.... Ross is no longer listed on HC's 2011 roster....

Say Hello to Seth Holdmeyer

Ran across another alleged football recruit. Seth Holdmeyer from North Royalton High played in the recent East-West All-Star Game at B-W Stadium.

I couldn't find him listed in Scouting Ohio but the Plain Dealer writeup for the game showed him as a UD commit. At North Royalton, Seth played center and was a key Special Teams player. Sounds like a late bloomer because he was a first time starter as a senior. NR had a good football record last season. He played on the basketball team also at 6'1".

Seth's teammate, James Holodnak, led the west allstar team in tackles and he is going to Marist!

Four Dayton Recruits in All-Star Game

Christina Tesar....Chuck Zavarella of Mayfield stretches in an effort to make a reception.

Would you believe four (4) UD football recruits played in the recent East-West All-Star Game for Cuyahoga County at Baldwin-Wallace College recently? I remember in 2006 when two (Valentino & Collins) played. So the bar is set higher as recruiting in NE Ohio increases.

Chuck Zavarella from Mayfield was featured in the PD photo. He played for the East and had 4 catches for 72 yards including an 18 yard TD catch.

The other recruits were on the West team. Strongsville's Matt Bianco played at RB as he did in hs except that our recruit list shows Matt as a DB recruit. Also seeing game action was our other Strongsville recruit, Ryan Aske. Ryan is a good Athlete but I don't know where he played in the game. The 4th UD recruit in the game was Seth Holdmeyer, a late-comer from North Royalton.

Other game notes...
MVP for the West was Padua receiver Nico Sardi who is headed for Morehead State. Another Strongsville kid was Zach Sedivy who is going to Butler. North Royalton's James Holodnak led the West in tackles and he's going to Marist. Leading tackler for the East was C.J. Jackson from Solon who is going to Robert Morris. Guess if you were a PFL fan, this would have been a good game to attend. Good luck to all the NE Ohio guys, except when the Flyers are the opponent.

It has been confirmed by Holy Cross fans that Ross has indeed transferred from Holy Cross to Dayton. I have also been told that since Ross is transferring to a non-athletic scholarship program, he will be eligible to play right away! This looks like a great pick-up for our Flyers! Welcome home Ross, great to have you as a Flyer. Can't wait to see you on the field!!

UD Recruit in All-Star Game

Way back on Jan.31 I wrote about the"Mighty Mites"; two more recruits from Indiana's Warren Central High. Anthony Davis was the state's leading rusher at 5'8"- 190# and Shaquille Tensley was a WR (Soph. CB, Howard Savage also played there)

Well last night in Indianapolis, Anthony Davis played in the state's All-Star game for the winning South team. Davis carried 7 times for 24 yards. Not much scoring (13-7) and the Indianapolis Star newspaper had the following comment:

Warren Central's Anthony Davis tweaked his hamstring in practice earlier in the week.
"He showed a lot of courage playing," Wimmer said. "He wasn't pain free, but he played and he was very effective for us."

I believe the photo below is Anthony (his number & the "W")

We "lost" Lee....

according to the DDN.

Kind of an old article but it mentions that he runs hurdles, plays point guard, and maybe cornerback for football. I saw some stats where he ran the ball and caught a pass or two. He seems like a very talented athlete and good kid. This is a great pick up for UD Football!
Well, it seems as though Lee has decided to accept a full ride to UD's fellow Marianist college Chaminade in Hawaii. I would have to think that maybe UD played a role in this opportunity for Lee as it seems unusual that a kid from Detroit would end up playing basketball for a Division II school in Hawaii. Kind of bummed that we will not get our two sport star, but hopefully this works out well for Lee.

As always with football recruits, we have to wait until camp starts to see who actually shows up....

Others "lost" Lee too

Yes, we did lose an athletic recruit when it looked like UD had enough "cards" to "win the hand". But so did his family & friends. Can't understand why one needs to go so far to play a sport? I completely understand those hs grads who say they chose a school so family can see games. He chose a nice place to visit but a way too long of a trip to get there.

I remembered the DDN story & DF's post when yesterday's news came out. Promising news sometimes comes up short in the end.

Looking for somebody at camp opening

In the world of non-scholarship football, it's probably true that you don't know 100% who the recruits are until they show. The Phil Steele FCS Football Preview magazine shows the Flyer recruits which he gets from sportsnetwork.com. Comparing his list to what we've posted here earlier, there are a few missing names to check out next week.

Seth Holdmeyer, North Royalton. No longer listed on Ohio Scouting either.

Joe Blume, St.Louis University High tight end.

Danny Ney, Lake Orion. Small WR from State Champ team. His scouting page now shows only FBS schools but no commit.

Jon Hanes, Moeller. Long snapper. He has "no commit" on Rivals & Ohio Scouting.

Ross Smith, Holy Cross transfer. Think transfer news broke after magazine was in production.

Any first-hand news will be appreciated.

Reviewing a couple things

Perhaps a final comment on this 2011 recruiting class.

Anthony Davis is the higest ranked RB (according to Phil Steele's numbers) among the PFL recruits by a wide margin. This was posted months ago:
The No.1 high school rusher in the State of Indiana (and #34 nationwide) is Warren’s #28 Anthony Davis. [amazingly the #2 rusher is his teammate 5’9” Dionte Buckley]. Davis hits holes quick, is a fine receiver and downfield blocker. His 5’8” frame carries 190# (or 180# depending on the article) which helped him average 187.9 yards per game. His 40 time & vertical jump numbers are not great, but don’t know who graded him.

Kyle Pignatiello is perhaps the best punter ever recruited at UD. He is 2-time All-Ohio punter and since last year the Flyers were nearly at the bottom of the PFL in punt distance, improvement is coming. His father Mike, played in 1980-82 and is in the UD record book for most x-points in one game (9) in 1982. Maybe Kyle can punt his way into the same book.

Pat Benton is not as highly rated and played for a small school - Div.IV Johnstown Monroe (Newark area) but kicking is kicking! His highlight video is downright boring. It's just KO after KO going into the end zone. He'll have to remove the little hop in his stride before a placekick or many will be blocked in college.

Westlake's Mike Massaad commits yesterday!

Talk about late decisions, never heard of this one! Sporting Ohio posted late yesterday that Mike Massaad, QB/ATH from Westlake High committed to Dayton (I assume not a walk-on).

Now this name seemed familiar so in my research, he shows up way back on a Jan.31 post as receiving an offer from Ashland. He had an interest in many D-1 schools in the area and also showed San Diego, interesting! Strange summer for Mr. Mike.

Anyway, Mike is listed as 6'1", 192# QB/ATH/SS/ATH. He has "Tino speed" and the highlight video is all offense. He has NHS intelligence but no football awards are listed. We'll find out soon!
