What a win!! Solid contributions from the young guys, Steve Dominating early, Scoochie controlling the flow, Cooke playing strong in a game he's not scoring, good ball movement, and great defense! LETS GO FLYERS!!

The way the Flyers came back from a serious deficit to win against Vandy at Vandy speaks loudly about this team and how Archie has prepared them. This is going to be a very interesting year.

Has UD ever gone on the road, go down by 16 points to a ranked team and then come back to win it? I'm 54 and don't ever remember that happening in my lifetime ...

Despite the first half anchor, we outshot the Commodores for the entire game 45% to 41%. Impressive.

The way these Archie coached teams come out of halftime is pretty amazing. You can almost always count on them storming out of halftime. The defense in the 2nd half was so much better than the first half. We didn't hear much about Vandy's future NBA post player in that 2nd half.
I'd rather not listen to another game from this Dino guy again. Good grief. When he would throw out that Vandy was missing their injured player, like it was some kind of excuse, all I was thinking was that UD is missing perhaps the best player in the A-10.
What a frickin' win!

If you count neutral court, they did it to Gonzaga in Maui, except they were down 16.

That means the guys lit it up and locked 'em down in the 2nd half. Great job.
And I realize this'll be covered in another thread, but Baby D gets my vote for dnutz. His aggressive defense at the end of the 1st half set the stage for this comeback. A GREAT win!

I admit I was negative- I apologize to the fans and the players. I just wanted to see fight and make it a game. I didn't want a repeat of the X game. Well, they sure didn't and I'm sure I'm not the only one happy to eat his words. Well done Archie and team. This should get some serious play on ESPN

Four consecutive steals with under 2 minutes in the half took the steam out of Vandy...broke their spirit!

Just got back from the game...
- The Flyer Faithful represent the U very well. The "We are...UD!!!" chant from the 4-500 in attendance drowned out all the other noise in the arena
- Still think Steve needs some lower body work, but he really had a nice second half. He was shooting a hook from the right side of the rim over Jones and I swear the ball went down from when it left his hand.
- Kendall Pollard is the motor that makes this team run.
- IMHO, Sam Miller deserves a load of credit for this win. Dude hustled his butt off while he was in and provided much needed quality minutes while Steve/KP were on the bench. Just one thought, though--quit trying to tip the ball back up on the offensive boards, grab it!!!!
- The number of steals/deflections were a testament to great coaching & game prep. The guards were in the passing lanes ready for the Vandy offense.
- Free throw shooting has to improve. We almost gift wrapped a hard fought win for the other guys at the end.
- I really, really, really like this team. This group has Final Four potential & that's not hyperbole. Vandy is a tournament caliber team who will win a ton of games in the SEC this year.
We are...UD!!!!!!!

I wasn't sure we would win, but thought they had a good chance. I wanted them to be down by less than 10 at the half--Baby D came through. I wanted them to have a second half like they did last Sat. Everybody contributed to that. Missed FTs scared me, but the defense held up and Vandy looked panicky in those last few minutes. Don't let the XU aberration fool you. Every team has a bad game now and then. Our guys can win, even though it will never be "pretty". I don't care how ugly it is. This win has to be a big confidence builder.
Next year, when Vandy comes here, will be even better with the arena rocking to the rafters.
It's going on 1 AM and I'm still too keyed up to sleep.

I thought Vandy was supposed to be such a tough place to play. You could hear a pin drop the first 30 minutes of this game. So much so that you could easily hear Pollard's primal screams after dunks. Based on what I heard while watching on ESPNU the Commodore fans should be embarrassed. When the loudest chant of the night is "Let's Go Flyers!" it's pretty telling. Also tells a lot about how our fans travel and make themselves heard. It seems our road/neutral crowds are getting even louder as word is spreading of the support we give our team. Keep up the good work, everyone!
BTW, Viper, I thought the same exact thing when watching Steve's shot go "down" on TV.

From TV, lots of empty seats in the first ten rows.
i think it's tough due to the Coaches box, not the student or fan support.
Last, Big Props to Sam Miller formoving across the lane on defense, fronting, working his TAIL off. Big layup bucket too - at a key point.
Good team effort - esp good play by Darrell Davis and Pollard

Dayton will need to soften up their defense by hitting some deep threes. Pollard and Cooke have to attack with purpose and not just hope to get a whistle. Dayton will have to carve out an advantage on the glass and at the free-throw line.
Dayton is at their best when they can generate turnovers and get transition baskets, but Vandy doesn't turn it over and are happy to get you in the half court. Flyers could have some success doubling the post unpredictably to generate some steals and deflections.
This would have been a great match-up for the small-ball Flyers last year. This will be a great test to see how much improvement Flyers have made on weaknesses exposed in FL.
|
Apparently quite a bit of improvement. I don't know how Archie continues to
outperform expectations.

It's just a very hard place to shoot at for away teams. The floor is so large and removed from the seats. Probably closer to playing in a football dome than your typical basketball arena. And away coaches definitely struggle communicating with their team when they're on the other end. This is actually the first year that the head coaches can walk down the sideline a bit. They extended the coaching box this season.
