The Tony Bennett Pack Line Defense

I just Googled this site above and saw where they will send any coach or player 31 drills for free to learn the defense played by the best defensive team in the nation, Virginia. This was the "D" we saw employed by Archie for a team that competed quite well in the A-10. Go Flyers!

Good defense requires player buy in.

Most freshman never knew how to play good defense in high school.

Because most high school and AAU coaches do not coach good defense, or understand good defense.

Not saying I was an expert, but I coached a fairly successful AAU team of middle school kids a few years back, won about 85% of our games including 6 out of 9 of our tournaments, developed kids skills well for their future high school teams, and had a good group of kids who got along great and loved playing together and learning. Several parents were unhappy and took kids elsewhere the following season because we did not score enough points to pad the kids stats for recruiters. They would rather lose 80 to 70, than win one of the boring games I coached 34 to 33.

Archie struggled mightily on defense his first few years...just think "Buffalo game." With the "gang of four seniors" last year you had guys who really understood how to disrupt an offense, especially Pollard and Kyle Davis. Coach Grant knows he doesn't have the experience, nor does he have an inside stopper. He is doing the best he can given the material he has.

It's not all about a scheme, you need athletes to execute. We don't have the athletes.

Our youth teams run pack line man to man. It is a good defense if ran properly.

We switched to it because at the age we are coaching, they needed a bunch of work guarding a ball screen properly and communicating. The keys to it are jumping to the ball and pressuring the ball. Everyone else is a step inside the 3 point line. The only time you are outside the 3 point line is when your player has the ball. Basically, no 1 pass denial. Many youth teams run some gimmick offense that involves exchanges at the top where they simply try to cause confusion. With the pack line defense, you pretty much stay "home". Other coaches can't figure it out because at first they think you are in a matchup zone since you aren't denying 1 pass away on the wing...you only deny the post.

The issues that arise, but not too often at a youth level, is a team has a shooter that is lights out and quick. In that case, if you don't jump the ball they can get the shot off. The other keys are seeing that passes aren't easily made, which is why ball pressure is important. Offenses can give it trouble if they exploit an poor backside rotation.

Xavier and Virgina are probably the best at running this defense. It is effective.

I miss our big guys hedging on the ball 25-30 feet from the basket. Those were the days.

On a more serious note. It does not matter what defense we play at this point, we do not have the players who can/will play it.

Anyone who still questions why AG is using a zone defense this year either didn't see the last five or so meaningful minutes of the URI game, doesn't understand basketball, or has an axe to grind regarding AG (some fall in category 2 & 3 like UDScott).

Our players are either not skilled enough to keep guards from penetrating or aren't experienced enough to understand defensive rotations, or both.

During the URI game I was thinking, "why not switch to a MtM, how much worse can it get?". I won't ask that question again. It can and did get much worse.

I wish it was as simple as Anthony Grant putting tapes into the projector and instructing the team to play man to man defense the way Kyle Davis did it the past four years! The best instruction would be: “Watch the way he moves his feet and anticipates his opponents moves and gets in position by pure hustle to block his path to the basket! Watch him dive on the floor for loose balls!” “On offense watch how crisp his passes are! Not lazy, telegraphed so they are easy to intercept.” “Also on the fast break, notice how he always finishes with a basket!” “Gentlemen, you have time to go to the kitchen and make a sandwich when Kyle has the ball!”

Unfortunately, the above scenario could never happen because we do not have the players, like jack72 said so truthfully, who can/will play it.

Totally agree. I tweeted during the game that we needed to go man-to-man to stop the open 3s, especially the corner 3s. Then we went man-to-man and Crutcher/Crosby both got torched on dribble penetration 3 possessions in a row with slow weak-side rotations leading to 3 straight lay-ups/dunks. I understand why AG is relying on the goofy zone.

Versus Davidson, might have to go man-to-man despite this as worry Davidson will shoot 50%+ from 3 versus Dayton's zone. Or perhaps go to a 3-2 zone and give up looks underneath? AG does not have any good options defensively ...

Jordan Davis is closing out 3s versus Davidson by taking small quick choppy steps. This is a huge improvement versus beginning of year and principle both Archie and Anthony teach. Allows you to close out 3s but not lunge and get beat by dribble drive.

Small but important progress.

What is sad, we are excited to see a college freshman doing what he should have been taught since the third grade. This comment is not meant to sound negative against Jordan, but maybe any and all coaches he has had in the past decade.

What is good is, he’s both coachable and intelligent. I really think JD has a chance to have a great career here.

I totally understand the lack of big men hedging, but one benefit of that is it does slow down the "burn the hedge" approach of some coaches (think X) who will immediately cut the offensive big man toward the basket once the big defender starts the hedge. Personally, I don't miss the hedge. Anthony Grant's defense has its roots in Don Donoher's defense. He never hedged, though that was before the day of the hedge. Don Donoher taught his players to fight through screens or switch.

Excellent point. I do believe that Anthony would much prefer a man-to-man defense. But he just doesn't have the experienced players to do so. We got spoiled with Pollard and Kyle.
