2016-17 Games of note:
A few days late; I'll apply the usual disclaimer that I put at the top each year (because there is always the 1 guy/gal): If all you care about is UD basketball and believe that as long as UD takes care of themselves, it doesn't matter what their opponents do, then this is NOT the thread for you, so don't start belly aching. While technically you are correct, an undefeated UD season would end in a national title, I'm going to make the assumption that there will be bumps along the road, other teams to jump in the rankings, or just flat out games across the landscape that are worth paying attention to. Like the last few seasons, hopefully we can compile those here. I'll thank all in advance that typically help keep this thread moving along with observations about games played, UD's opponents, and just picking up the slack.
So yesterday:
Nebraska knocked off Sacramento St.
UCLA (hopefully/maybe future opponent) won their 2nd game of the season in easy fashion.
Duquesne lost at Penn St.
Washington, who IIRC was suppose to be good w/ a highly touted young super frosh, lost to Yale.
Monday:
Hoops marathon gets going tonight, a slew of A10 games and a few OOC opponents play as well:
#4 Nova vs #15 Purdue (+2)
Marist (+21.5) @ #23 Rhody
Ol Dirty minon (+4.5) @ Richmond
UMass (+10) @ Ole Miss (kind of interested to see how UMass' young talent handles the roady)
NYIT @ Fordham
Columbia (+6.5) @ St Joeseph's (the A10 version, not the D2 school that also appears on UD's schedule)
Detroit (+12.5) @ ETSU (Michael Harmon ain't walking thru that door)
Southern Utah (+9.5) @ Saint Louis
Eastern Washington (+17) @ Northwestern (ironically neither north nor west of EWU)
San Diego St (+8.5) @ #14 Gonzaga, not sure about SDSU this year, but they are usually pretty good, I'll be well asleep by the time this one tips off

If ever there was an example of the folly of pre-season polls it's UConn....ranked 16/18.
UConn lost three starters from last year that accounted for ~75% of team scoring. There are five freshmen and 3 sophs on the team....and 3 seniors who are not good. The team's play in its two losses was dreadful....with little sign of the likelihood of much improvement. A sub-five hundred season is a possibility. And the pollsters had the team at 16/18. Must be the same guys that had HRC as president.

my lord, just brought up the Winthrop game, that Jasper court is hard to watch on TV/computer. Worse than Boise's football field.

Speaking of "hard to watch"... flipped over to the OSU basketball game multiple times last night while watching MNF - they did not look very good. They need to improve big time, or will get roughed up in the Big Ten this year.

They looked hideous.
Well they're tOSU, so. . .
I watched a good bit of that game and they don't have very much talent. It wasn't just that they were playing bad, they just aren't that good. I really think we would beat them 7 out of 10 times split between home courts. Maybe 8. And we're not exactly playing like world-beaters right now.

Winthrop is up around 17. I'm impressed with the ball movement and flow of Winthrop's offense. Pat Kelsey I believe was an assistant for Prosser at X (though perhaps Matta/Miller), definitely at Wake has the makings of a great coach; wouldn't be surprised to see his name come up for any good A10 level job to lower tier P5 school next season, GW should have him on their short list.

Wintrhop is now up 11 w/ under 3 to go. That is going to be a tough game coming out of the Wooden Classic (or whatever its called in LA). Certainly not sexy, but they can certainly take UD if UD comes out napping.

so yesterday:
Winthrop won, GW won, La Salle won, Mason won, VCU won, Nebraska won and Vandy won, so good day for UD's SOS.
In other action of interest, WSU held off Miami after having a huge early lead to win by 2. #4 Oregon lost to Baylor, Kansas beat Duke by 2, Kentucky beat Mich St, Maryland nips G'town by 2, Creighton handles #9 Wisconsin

Any game that Monmouth loses makes me happy! It means there is less of a chance of ESPN promoting their bench players skits.

I agree wholeheartedly. Especially since their antics overshadow a pretty darn good group of guys who actually play, not to mention one of the more dynamic and exciting players no on knows about.

This is my favorite thread throughout the season. Thanks to Medford and others who keep it up to date.
It reminds me of when I was younger reading the DDN. They would call out all the "Flyer Foes" in the long list of Men's college basketball scores in the paper every day.

Butler hosting Northwestern on FS1. Tight game, but the most interesting thing is the Cox cable guide here in Florida lists the game as:
"Butler hosts Northwestern in an early-season clash between the Horizon League and the Big Ten."
Horizon League! LOL

the butler, NW game was a fun one to watch. NW is going to be a tough matchup, wasn't UD recruiting Victor Law at one point? He played a fair amount of minutes in last 10 minutes or so that I got to watch.

Thursday 11/17:
Clemson @ Davidson (11:00 on espnu for those that want to follow)
Temple +3 @ UMass
Arkansas Pine Bluff @ GW
Providence @ Ohio State (doesn't relate to UD, but interested to see if OSU looks any better than they did the other night, I think we'd like Matta to stick around a few more years up there)
Bonnies (+13) @ Florida (seems like way too big of a line; what do I know, go Bonna)
Fisher College @ Harvard (think there are some smart kids playing in this one?)
E Illinois (+5) @ St Louis
Valpo (+12.5) @ #4 Oregon, not sure if Brooks is still out for Oregon, but the line seems way to big either way, Valpo has one of the better big men in the country
Michigan (+1.5) @ Marquette (can an astroid just fall on the building in the middle of the game?)
San Diego (+26) @ #16 UCLA

Winthrop wins at Illinois 84 to 80. Flyers will need to be ready for the Eagles and Pat Kelsey when they come to UD Arena.

I know it is way early, but usually this time of year the A-10 is in the 4th to 9th place RPI range as a conference. This year I see the A-10 is currently in 15th place. December needs to be a much better month for the conference or everyones RPI will suffer. Simple solution of course for the Flyers, just win them all.

Oregon, picked by some as a Top 5 team, loses to a pedestrian Georgetown and is now 2-2.

Yet most media outlets still qualify Oregon's play with the fact their stud, Dillon Brooks, had not been playing. He played yesterday, the Ducks were at full strength. Still getting the benefit of the doubt, per ESPN:
"It didn't help the Ducks that Brooks, a preseason All-American, was obviously feeling his way back from offseason foot surgery. Until he gets really right, and reintegrates into Dana Altman's offensive plan, the Ducks are going to struggle offensively."

I've talked with my Dad about this on a number of occasions. I'm not saying it is the case with Oregon, but it really annoys me how a lot of teams don't move much in the rankings or get a better seed based on their history. Duke is one that annoys me the most. But to see week in and week out teams lose a game or even two and barely move in the rankings when we play a pretty darn good schedule and it takes so much to gain respect. Two years ago is a perfect, and just one, example when we got picked to play at UD Arena after a great season, its just a slap in the face.

Normally you can add Mich St to that list. Currently 2-2. Lost to Ariz at buzzer. Blown out by KY. Beat FGCU by one in East Lansing. Now ranked 20/24, which is darn near scandalous.

Oh Michigan State is one of the worst when it comes to this. Smh. I feel like not only is it the Michigan State name, but more so Izzo. He has proven that they come around later in the season, but still.

That was Arizona they lost to, not Arizona State. Still your point is well taken.
Oregon moved to 3-2 with an OT win against Tenn. They will not move next week, while UD gets less votes after a loss to a good team.

...and did you see the end of that FGCU game, where the referees "accidentally" started the clock when the ball was inbounded, rather than when it was caught 90 feet away? Unfortunately the rules prevented replaying the final 2 seconds.

Didn't see it go final but found it was interesting they were up 2 with 6 minutes to go.
Its a Big 10 school with name recognition. They will move up to #2, start receiving 1st place votes, and in the eyes of the committee they pass the "eye test" and their "body of work will speak for itself". The committee chair will say "Well Greg and Clark, Indiana's (insert what helps Big school case) as opposed to Southern Illinois (insert what hurts Small school case) was the deciding factor. It was a tough choice as always"
Indiana goes on tho lose the play-in game to Pepperdine by 35
SMH. I see this movie every year.

VCU up on Baylor by 1 with 11 minutes left. VCU is tall and very tough defensively. Cox in foul trouble and has only played 6 minutes.

VCU is no bigger than Dayton. Mo is listed at 6'7" but he is maybe 6'6". Justin Tillman is 6'7". Their starter at the 4, Jordan Burgess, is 6"5". Their tallest kid that plays considerable minutes Hamdy and he is 6'9". VCU's starting guards are both listed at 6'1" but I would be shocked if Jonathan Williams is over 6'. Of all the A10 teams, I think we match up the best with VCU size wise.

Where have you been.......
The news media likes BIG GOVERNMENT (thus supports Liberals)
The sports media likes BIG FIVE CONF (thus supports the Dukes, IU, Mich States, etcs)
As I've said on many occasions we better win the NCAA tourney as it stands today pretty soon because down the road the BIG 5/BCS schools will have their own (90 team?) hoop tourney and we'll be relegated to the second place event, the NIT of today..

I watched the end of that game. Rhody down 3 with about 10 sec to go with ball at Valpo end. Valpo had called time out and set up a D to guard the 3 pt line. Rhody player drives all the way down, right to an unguarded basket. He passes up the easy 2 to get the ball to the 3 line but there is no open shot there and the shot is blocked badly. I don't know if he had taken the easy 2, how realistic it would have been to get the ball back and get another shot but obviously it would not have been worse than what happened. Interesting strategy on Valpo's part. Everyone always talks about to foul or not to foul when up 3 but I thought the choice to over play the 3 was an interesting one.

BIG took a whipping last night after holding leads in most games. IU looked good from the get go. Hard to figure how the Mastodons beat them. A-10 went 4-4, and we took some bad losses.

A-10 could be a 1-2 bid league. Very few good OOC wins for the league ...

We saw that UCLA has the goods this year last weekend. They are potentially a Final Four team. I dunno about Ky.
We just have to take care of Dayton. Our close loss to St Mary's at home is balanced by a road win at 'bama, and a neutral over a pretty good New Mexico team. If Kendall is really back, and that wasn't a mirage this afternoon, we are capable of taking care of our own business.
We have already had a good exposure to winning on the road which will serve us well in the A10.

New Mexico lost to a bad Illinois St team tonight. The A10 has done absolutely nothing in the non con. The 1 bid league situation is no joke.

THE University of St. _avier at Cincinnati lost a game? Man what a shame. Kentucky University lost too? That's too bad. AND a Dayton win with our heart and soul back? i thought Christmas was the 25th?
UCLA is the real deal, you can have Harry Giles and Josh Jackson....no Freshman in the country let alone ANY player is better then Lonzo Ball. Being on the West Coast he'll be largely overlooked but we shall be hearing from him in March.

Northwestern is off to a pretty good start...they have beaten Texas, Wake Forest, and DePaul. They could be a good win. They are favored by 0.1 over UD right now.
This could be the year when they finally make their first NCAAT appearance...expected rpi of 54...they could get the usual p5 preferential treatment from the selection committee.

Portland comes from 11 down against Rio Grand Valley with 5 minutes left in regulation to tie the game at 73-73 on a dunk with 1 second left and send it into OT. Then, get a layup with 8 seconds left in the first OT to tie the game at 82 and send it into the second OT. Finally, get a tip-in off a missed layup with 2 seconds left in the second OT to win 90-89.
A small bump in our SOS.They all count.

I think they are better than NW. Different style and size, but better than all the P5 teams on the schedule.

Despite only going 2-2 last night; those four A10 scores seem to send an obvious message of how difficult the conference games are going to be, regardless of current RPI's. VCU and GTECH was a hell of a game; and Davidson **** near came back and beat Carolina at Chappell Hill.

GT was predicted to finish next to last in the ACC, only better than Boston College. This is the type a game where a top 4 or 5 A-10 team should pull out. While it was an entertaining game, I did not see 2 good teams on the floor. Very sloppy, both teams had 20+ turnovers, and not much ability to create. And with VCU's 20 point loss to Illinois in their last game, things are not looking too good down in Richmond.
UNC vs Davidson actually looked like there were 2 good teams on the floor. Much more skill and ability to create. I was happy with how well Davidson played in this one even though they lost. Davidson continues to be a better addition to the A10 than I thought they would be. I was worried that it would be too big of a jump from the Southern Conference.

That's the reason I said despite RPI'S; and I attribute much of the turnovers in VCU game to competitive defense..it took overtime to reach the 70's.
My point was that a random game in the A10 will be no picnic; and don't expect VCU to vanish in the conference race; as they will be a threat to the end.
If UD scrimmages Illinois, then folks say wow look at the big time program UD practiced against; but if VCU loses to them, you say Illinois isn't worth a crap.

Luke Kennard #4 on a list of POY candidates, averaging 19 and 7...Landale from SMC #6.
http://www.cbssports.com/college-bas...gest-surprise/:
Kennard didn't get nearly the attention that Grayson Allen and Duke's heralded freshman class received in the preseason, but he's been the Blue Devils' best player. The 6-6 sophomore is averaging 19.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists while shooting 50.0 percent from the field. He scored a career-high 35 points in Saturday's win over Maine.

Scrimmages when you are working on things and are not going all out to win is a little different than a OOC game in the middle of the season. And they didn't just lose to Illinois, they were dominated by Illinois. But Illinois IMHO is a much better team than the GT team that beat VCU at VCU.

VCU is a horrible outside shooting team, period. As was the case under Shaka, they still get incredible athletes that can leap small backboards in a single bound. With the 30 second shot clock they're finding themselves having to rely more on medium/longer range jumpers then attacking the glass as they've always done. And HAVOC isn't what it used to be either, at least as long as the refs are consistently applying/enforcing the hand check rule.
