All-Time Favorites
This topic is probably more for the old-timers. Wondering who are your all-time favorite Flyers (Men's Basketball) that you watched play? I can go all the way back to the early 60s. Your all-time favorites don't have to be who you think were the best players. They can be for any reason. In fact, I'd be curious to read some of your reasoning. Okay, I'll go first.
1) Don May - Obvious choice, but I just loved him as a player and he's a wonderful person.
2) Sedric Toney - Mr. Tough.
3) Damon Goodwin - Played with such heart.
4) Chris Wright - So fun and exciting to watch.
5 tie) Donald Smith and Mike Sylvester - I have so many good memories of that '74 team. Hard to leave off Johnny Davis.
7) Ryan Perryman - Did anybody work harder around the basket?
8) Garry Roggenburk - My first favorite player.
9) Roosevelt Chapman - He's quite the character and charmer.
10) Chris Johnson - Always did whatever it took to win.

Still can't help but wonder what might have been his Senior year if Chris Wright would not have missed the second half of the season.

My intro to UD starts in '75, so I'll start with my two alltime favorites from that team:
1. Jim Paxson Jr: Admired his fundamentals, and watching his constant motion without the ball was worth price of admission.
2. Johnny Davis: Quickness, leaping ability, exciting.
3. Chris Wright: Explosive, athletic, entertaining.
4. Roosevelt Chapman: A tweener who could score against any size defender.
5. Chris Johnson: A gamer, nose for the ball.

Even though I was at UD when Roger Brown, Gordie Hatton and Bill Chmlewski were there my favorite player was Gary Roggenburk. He was so smooth with all his move on the court. He had a 2 hand set shot from outside and he shot his foul shots two handed. I even learned to shoot the two hand set shot.

Erv Giddings...I always wanted to be Erv Giddings...it's still fun to say 'Erv Giddings'...and I always wanted his 'fro and loved his desire to dunk everything.

That had to be frustrating for Erv because I believe the dunk was outlawed in college until 76-77 season ... which meant the big guy couldn't flush it his first few seasons.

If I recall he got T'd up as a sophomore when he 'accidentally' dunked against someone. Erv was a man's man...if you didn't love him, you couldn't love anyone.

It was against Dickie V and the Detoit Titans at the Arena. Erv knew everybody on the other side and wanted to make a statement. Mickey was not pleased. When I brought that dunk up to Johnny Davis he LOLed.

When I was a kid it was Donald Smith. If memory serves he shot free throws during the entire DD tv show. When show was over they said he had made 100 straight. They cut to him through out the show to check on progress. Anyone else remember?

I liked Erv too, but he dropped off the "favorite" list for "things" he did after UD.

1. Don May for several reasons. He made me a Flyers fan and, this may sound strange, but following him made me consider UD. He was unbelievable in our run to the Final 2.
2. Jim Paxson. If only because I saw so many of his games.
3. Bucky. Because he is and will always be Bucky. Many nights straining to listen to UD games over the decades and he was my link.
4. B Rob. Still following him. Carried the team on his back at times. That win at Miami remains one of the guttiest comebacks of all time.
5. Chris Wright. Because he is a class act and a great guy.
Cannot wait to see Flyers for the next few decades, God willing, and add to this list.
Jumping Joe, ask this question about every 10 years. Could be interesting.

Chip Hare-----Now he was great player.
Actually, Negele Knight 8th in all time scoring. All time leader in assists.
I know that's loaded based on games played. He did avg 5.43 assist/game

I was watching a Pac-12 game about a month ago with Bill Walton commentating and he was rambling on (like he tends to do) and was talking about the best shooters of all time. He mentioned Roger Brown as of one of 6 or 7 names he was rambling off. I wasn't aware Brown was a great shooter. I've heard a lot about him, the shooting part was a surprise.

Hey, I'm sure you can pick mine apart in the same way, and I really appreciate that you included KC on yours, I had him on mine but somehow had to drop him just out of my top 20. BUT, BUT seriously, how could a person who followed this team from Roggenberk to Chris Johnson, include Warren and fellow teammates Toney and KC, but leave off Velvet? Help me understand.

1st of all it is "PerrYman" not "PerrIman"

2. Brian Roberts
3. Keith Waleskowski
4. Ramod Marshall
5. Chris Johnson
6. Mark Ashman

How can everybody miss Bobby Joe Hooper?
He could single-handed break any press. Deadly at the line. Deadly shot within any crease. Little tough guy. Great Name.

Man, I am lucky if I can remember my name, much less ten old Flyers.
I guess Kevin Conrad sticks out for me. Just a tough kid who ran the team well. Hey, how about the Hatton brothers? Or Chuck Izor, the "Pride of Eaton?"

1) Donald Smith; can you imagine how many point he'd have had their been a 3 point shot in the day? Seems like everything he made was beyond 20'. Fantastic player and according to Donoher "a much better person than he was a player". RIP Donald, I loved watching you as a kid.
2) Brian Roberts - gave it his all and robbed of NCAA appearance.
3) Jim Paxson Jr. - what couldn't he do?
4) Johnny Davis - was the glue of the 73-74 NCAA/UCLA game team.
5) Don May - enough said.
6) Dave Colbert - easily the best 2 year transfer to ever wear a UD uniform. RIP Dave, you left too early.
7) Mike Kanieski (spelling?) - tough forward, always making key plays.
8) Ryan Perryman - for what he did to put UD back on the basketball map. Every UD player should be shown highlight game reel of RP in action.
9) Kevin Conrad - behind Johnny Davis, maybe the 2nd best PG ever at Dayton, at least in terms of toughness.
10) Tie a) Chris Wright - for what he brought game in and game out b) Devin Oliver for about the same thing, also; I've never seen a UD player so upset at a loss to slam a basketball against the court. Donoher would say at that: "I don't mind poor losers, that means they wanted to win"

Sorry Smitty - and yes, I do remember the broken finger and how he played through it. Remember when he got a concussion diving for a loose ball at Freedom Hall against Louisville? Don't know if that was 66-67 or 67-68.
May and Finkel were all americans, but Bobby Joe was the heart and soul of those teams.
He was a gutsy player who gave it everything he had every game. All game, every game.
And I like your spelling better. "Hooooooooper" I can still hear it over the PA system and on the radio.

I think too many of the earlier Flyers are shortchanged by rankings in which folks who've only followed the Flyers for 25-30 years dominate the voting. I date back to the 50s and these are my all timers, in order of preference by position:
Center: Finkel, Meineke, Uhl Sr., G. Jackson
Forward: May, Roggenburk, Corbitt, Perryman
Forward: Chapman, Horan, Palmer, Colbert
Guard: Davis, Knight, Hooper, Toney
Guard: Paxson, Smith, Bockhorn, Sallee
Those were the days!

The ones I liked at UD seeing them from '77 to '81, in order.
Velvet
Jim Paxson Jr.
Erv Giddings (the most intimidating-looking basketball player I've ever seen.)
Richard Montague
Mike Kanieski
Jack Zimmerman
Some pretty good players here, and not one year did they see the NCAA. Only NIT.

favorite to watch in person was easily Chapman. One of a kind. 6'4" yet could dominate a game from in the paint against much taller opponents.

This is a fun post where no one argues with anyone and there are no wrong answers. It makes you think about all the good UD basketball times and remember names. As you can guess, I was there from 64 to 68. When we played Michigan (Cazzie Russell et als) in 65 regionals at Kentucky, we could not stay with Michigan but I think Finkel was the high scorer. They could not stop him. But we had a senior named, Denny Papp, "The Mad Bomber". This was before the three point shot and it was his job to come off the bench and shoot long range bombers to break a zone. Also I thought Hooper was about 6 foot 2 or three but he was a premier ball handler and one of top five guards in country. I think he lasted for 5+ years playing for Indiana Pacers. After 68 I did get to watch May with the Knicks in NYC>

Erv certainly had the stats similar to some others in the HOF. It's possible he didn't graduate which is a requirement of the HOF. If you read my post earlier in this thread, you'll come to the conclusion that he will never be considered HOF material due to severe character issues.

Fifteen more (not so known) that didn't make my initial list...
1) Mike Brannen - He didn't play much, but a super nice guy from a huge family in Cincinnati. Got to know him when he worked at River Downs Race Track taking tickets during the summers.
2) Mike Leffel - His name is a palindrome.
3) Gordy Gahm - Had a true glass backboard in his driveway.
4) Leighton Moulton - Another great guy and a decent player too. I know he worked at Cargill for years.
5) Steve Lawrence - Okay...I'll admit it...I liked to make fun of him.
6) Dave Abel - My sister had a crush on him.
7) Jim Rhoden - Solid player. Quit the team to become a brick layer. Came back for another season, but left the team again.
8) Willie Johnson - 6' 8" forward that couldn't jump a lick.
9) Larry Schellenberg - Great defender. Perfect complimentary player to Chapman, Young, Toney, and Goodwin. He was the one that got the rebound from the third position at the foul lane that led to "The Shot" by Ed Young.
10) Anthony Grant - Pretty nice player, but even a better person. Total class.
11) Alex Robertson - The best set of defensive hands in UD history.
12) Maurice Beyina - The human foul machine.
13) Keith Braswell - He wasn't quite 5 foot tall. His shorts were to his ankles. Scored a total of 2 career points.
14) Mickey Perry - Just a regular guy. Super friendly.
15) Marco Pikaar - Story goes that we stole him away from Wright State. If you are going to steal, you should at least make it worth your while.

Started at UD in 82, so going by what I saw then, and then some live games on the road in the 90's and 00's.
Guards: K Conrad, super tough and perfect fit for Donohers offense and to feed guys like Chappy and Kanieski
K Dillard/B Roberts. Roberts was superstud. And if we could combine Dillard at his best along with Roberts shooting ability -- would be nice.
Toney: great shooter. Imagine if he had four year career here
Forwards: Chapman
Perryman
Waleskowski
Chris Wright
nothing to say about Chapman. He was just miraculous at his size. Superior body control and hands.
Perryman I only saw once live, and wish I could have seen him more. STUD rebounder. IF he had more teammates, we could say only if.
Keith W was somewhat inconsistent his senior year, but was a Playa. Got more out of his size and potential out of sheer effort. Loved his effort!
CW Superior athlete , with exciting hops and plays his first 3 years. Sadly injured early on, and no real compliments his senior year.
Centers: Sean Finn
all Defense: London Warren
Marcus Johnson, Larry Schellenberg
Wright, simply for blocks, rebounds and excitement
Kurt Huelsman,
Alex Robertson

Some pretty good players here, and not one year did they see the NCAA. Only NIT.

This reference to intimidating players reminded me of George Jackson...anybody remember him? He really had some meat hooks, and could jump out of the gym. If i remember correctly he was a transfer and played 2 years at UD...probably 70 and 71 or maybe 71 and 72. Remember vividly storming the court after the Flyers beat Western Kentucky and their 7 foot all-american, Jim McDaniels and literally ran into Jackson, which immediately sent me flying on my kiester.

Remember George well. A poor man's Chris Wright. Could jump and rebound and great heart, but no handle or outside shot.

1. Roosevelt Chapman - I didn't have to think twice about this one. He made creating shots out of nothing at all a habit. Velvet was such an appropriate nickname. The 1984-85 season will always be my favorite as a Flyer fan. The Velvet Man was the talk of the tournament. Just wish he could have taken his skills to the NBA.
2. Jim Paxson - The era when I really started becoming a mega fan, and Paxson was my first favorite player. He was one of the last of his kind, IMO. He was a pure basketball player who had to rely on that instead of any physical ability, something that just isn't heard of these days.
3. Chris Johnson - I admit, this choice has a lot to do with what he had done after his Flyer career. I remember telling my brother once during CJ's freshman year that I thought he would end up being a better overall player than Wright. I just loved his effort. His effort and desire often carried his team and always set the example. A great basketball player and even a better person.
After these, there are just too many to mention or rank. Just a few in no particular order.
-Brian Roberts - Simply unstoppable when he got in that zone.
-Damon Goodwin - One of the purest shooters ever to wear a Flyer uniform. Too bad he didn't play during the 3-point era.
- Ryan Perryman - Best "ungifted" rebounder I've ever seen, and I mean that in a good way.
- Ramod Marshall - Took over the point when nobody else could, and exceeded expectations.
- Chris Wright - The most physically talented athlete to ever wear a Flyer uniform. I still feel an NBA career is in his future.

Dunking was not allowed during the two years JD played for UD so no highlight reel for him. I do remember him as a solid rebounder even though he was undersized (6'4") at his position. If you ever get to talk to him in person, he is a very warm and genuine guy. JD is great!

The photo I would love to see again is Johnny Davis blocking a shot which was on the cover of the UD press guide in the 1975-76(?). Anybody have it or could scan a copy? I believe it was against Otis Birdsong and the Houston Cougars. Johnny's vertical was amazing.

You left off John Von Lehman? Center was a 2-headed monster for us that season because they would usually have 9 fouls between them if we were lucky at the end of the game.

I had an ongoing debate with another guy I knew that Obrovac outjumped Alcindor in that game. He insisted it was Sadlier. Finally, I was hunting for some car insurance and ran across Obrovac an stopped in to purchase. After signing I said "hey, got a friend I've been arguing with and I say you outjumped Alcindor". Obvrovac pointed to the photo of him doing it. I laughed and said "great, I knew it, he say it was Sadlier". Obrovac stops me dead in my tracks and says "He's right, Sadlier did it too". Would love to see a photo of that.

Maybe I missed his name but...........
the best Flyer ever, not mentioned to this point, was Gordy Hatton.
He had a pattoned move.
Drive his man to the land,
freeze him,
and then hit the fade away semi jumper
AWESOME

I found the Johnny Davis photo I was looking for and placed it in the Media Vault. The photo has to rank right up there with "The Shot" photo which happened 30 years ago today.

He got that "T" for dunking on a breakaway. As soon as he crossed half court, Donoher was on his way to get a sub off the bench. DD always pulled kids after a technical.

I remember that picture, and I used to have the media guide. I might still have it, but it'd be in a box in my storage shed outside. Johnny D's afro was **** near in the cylinder, and yes, I think it was Otis Birdsong who got "faced".
Great memories!

In only the most general of order...
Velvet (yes, I was there all 4 years he was in uniform - what a blessing!)
Smitty (loved his fadeaway)
Johnny D (like a strong beer - lots of hops)
Chris Daniels (God love you, my man)
Dan Obravac (can remember the announcer at The Fieldhouse: " The Man in The Middle...")
Ryan Perryman (the picture next to "Tough" in the dictionary)
Allen Elijah (remember hearing Omar Williams: " E-lijah with the rebound!")
Jim Paxson (the definition of an Iron Man)
Kevin Conrad (a tough, little Irish guard)
Edwin Young (the G, with no disrespect intended to the F-C)
Ed Young (the F-C, with no disrespect intended to the G)
Dave Colbert (smooth, tough, confident, and humble - a tough combination to find)
C-Dub (Dayton guy stays home - gotta love that)
CJ (the definition of determination)
Mike Kanieski (could shoot from anywhere on the court - inside or outside)
Terry Ross (did the most he could with the tools he had - a real gamer)
Mark Ashman (the 2nd-best post in the State his Sr year, behind Jason Collier, and he chose OP & UD)
Brooks Hall (another outstanding talent, who chose to stay close to home)
Steve Lawrence (OK, I had to include 1 goofy-looking guy)
And th-the, th-the, th-the, that's all folks!

Thanks, Joe! I can probably still name 1/2 the people in that Band (to the right, as you're looking over Raymond McCoy's shoulder). I was either the guy with the aviator shades in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, or the guy whose arm was attached to that trombone you saw being waved frantically. And I remember the article in the paper the next day that paid homage to the old baseball saying, but instead of "Tinker to Evers to Chance" it was "Schelly to Chapman to Young". Great memories!
Thanks again, Joe!

After watching this play again, I never realized how much had to go right in that sequence. Young getting his fingers on the rebound, Shelly being in the right place to grab it, Shelly tiptoeing near the line and keeping control, and Chapman's pass to Young had to be perfect and Young being ready for the pass also.
Also reminds you of how a star player is supposed to be. Last year it seemed like KD felt when there was last second shot that needed to be made, he was going to take it no matter what yet look at Chapman here, he didn't try to force anything. The star senior had no problem letting the sophomore get the glory, it was all about winning as a team.

Wow, what a difference in student sections from that game till current.
My Favorite all-time Flyers are (but I wasn't born until 1969, so first two have asterisk)
1. James Paxson Senior (He is from Springfield, my hometown, and he grew-up on same street with my Mom, and she remembers playing neighborhood games with Jim.
2. Jack Sallee also from Springfield, a couple years in front of my Mom in high school. Jacks first wife, a cheerleader from high school, is a friend of the family.
Here comes my time:
3. Roosevelt Chapman...what else can you say.
3.5 Anthony Corbitt
4. everyone else from the 83-84 squad
5. Dave Colbert
6. Keith Waleskowski
7. Negle Knight
8. Noland Robinson
9. Ken Branch
10. Ray Springer
11. David Brads
12. Bill Crotty
13. Alex Robertson
14. Troy McCracken
15. Raymod Marshall
16. and of course Storman Norman Grevey...lace-em-up Norm, as Bob would say on the Radio

My fondest memory of being a Flyer fan. I was sitting behind the basket that Young made the shot. I can still picture all of it and remember how great it felt. What a magical season.

As one of the few "old timers" on this board (my hair is not blue), I must say that for me there is only one #1--classmate, Hank Finkel. I didn't know him personally, but literally ran into him one day after class in Chaminade Hall. I'm 5'2" and the top of my head barely made it past his belt. I just kept looking up and up and up, mortified at my clumsiness. He said, "Sorry" in that deep voice and I stammered out my own apology and slunk away, lol. My brush with greatness.
At graduation in the fieldhouse, he sat in front of me looking just as excited as the rest of us mere mortals.

I was browsing around CBS Sports website and found this article on NCAA tournament "one hit wonders".
The link below should show Pittsnogle's picture but if you click on the previous button two times you will find a short summary on Roosevelt Chapman. I know he was mentioned a lot in this thread so I found it interesting that his name appeared on this site. He was a blast to watch as a youngster and I'm proud to say we both graduated at the same time from UD even though he received his M.B.A degree and I received my B.S. degree as a non-traditioinal student.

And here I thought he was living in Ohio somewhere and made frequent visits in the area but you can see I was totally off base with that thought.
