Mississippi State thoughts

1. Does Kostas start each game with 2 fouls? Maybe it is the exchange rate or something.
2. Pierce in? Why now?
3. 9-16 from the FT line will not cut it
4. Yes, the calls looked bad. But I heard the MSU crowd booing calls as well. And the refs called 18 fouls to 13 on us.
5. Last possession - why not call a TO?
6. After DD turnover, there still was a foul to give (I think)?
7. A TO would have cleared that up.
8. I like AG (at least I want to like him). But I keep questioning how we get into early foul trouble, have no rhythm offensively, and the lack of timeouts and general game management. He has been a HC before.
9. Also seems like each game it is ONE GUY that is single handedly beating us. I understand sometimes it is matchups and have to give credit, but this is a pattern.
10. Drinking Old Forester 1897. At least the entire evening was not a waste.

2. Who knows. Maybe Xman will be out a while.
5. That is an excellent question
6. Yes UD had a foul to give
7. which could have been cleared up in a timeout.
8. He was also fired from being a head coach for some of those exact same reasons.
10. Excellent choice.

1. They are going to try and get him into trouble because it is easy to do...AG has to coach it out of him or prove a point
2. Would have kept him on the pine. 3 minutes.
3. Never been a lockdown FT shooting program...ticks me off because it means they aren't being worked on. Easiest shot in the game and all it takes is reps.
4. Officials are officials and fans are fans
5. Gotta call the timeout with 3 boots on the floor and DDavis looking around waiting on it. You have to call that TO.
6. Yes..foul to give but it wasn't coached and our players aren't heady enough to know that was an option...ask Chris Webber about timeouts...guys don't want to make that foul without being told to.
7. Yes
8. AG will be questioned quite a bit. No excuses on his front. He isn't some boot with no experience.
9. There has been one guy that kills us every game for 15 years.
10. Left over cases of domestic because I killed both of my kegs last week. Time for a run to Bonbright or a Johnny Walker black after this game.

3. The puzzling thing about ft's last night is that the three players who went 7/14 are pretty good ft shooters according to past performance and folklore.

6. I don't have a problem with not calling a time-out, but yes the coaches may have gagged a bit on that one. What bothers me is DD got the screen he wanted from Josh, but instead of heading for the lane which was open, he took his man and Josh's man to the corner. Now you have 2 Flyers and 3 Miss St defenders in a small space with Josh wide open at the circle.

The right play was a pass back to a wide open Josh with plenty of time left. When DD sees the replay he is going to absorb the whole sequence and will learn from it.

It's a learning process for sure.

9. We don't have a Kyle Davis.....yet.

Put me down for calling a time out after securing the rebound with 28 sec left and that is before I realized there was a foul to give. I think most college coaches would - good or bad. A young team needs to be coached up in those situations. An experience group may not need it. I would say in the pros, most coaches would not call the time out in a situation like that with the shot clock off. Maybe AG was thinking more like an NBA coach.

Side note - kind of amazing that they were able to come back from 21 down without fouling like crazy.

And if you're the MSST coach, what would you do if UD called a TO?

On the court was the 3 guard combo of senior, freshman, freshman, and the total lineup in the game had a combined 17 TO's at that point in the game.

I would have trapped the inbounds pass aggressively (26 seconds left), and if they got out of that I would have dropped into a 1-3-1 zone or a 2-3 zone. Maybe even a box-1 on DD. Just confuse them, and make sure whatever AG drew up in the huddle was not going to happen. Try to press us into a shot early in the shot clock so we at least get the ball back if not a TO.

If I'm AG, I wouldn't want the guys thinking about it too much and tightening up. It didn't work, but that doesn't mean it was the wrong decision.

I do not think that calling a time out would necessarily been the best plan. MSST is a young team and was making mistakes in the second half at a faster clip than even the Flyers. I would be inclined to avoid the time out which would give Howland a chance to coach up his team for a better defense. I would prefer to see if the MSST could keep their poise with all the pressure on them or if DD or Josh could make something happen.

It did not work well for the Flyers but this does not necessarily mean it was totally crazy.

My memory might be wrong, but how many times did Archie call timeouts at the end of half or game, and we end up running the clock down and throwing up a bad shot. As one coach responded when asked why he did not call timeout, "what and let them set up their defense."

3. Dayton is shooting 70.6% FT for the year which is the best% since 2013 when Dayton shot 71.7%. FT shooting in NCAA has averaged about 69% for the past 50 years. This game hurts, but high variance game-by-game.

5. I like the no TO with our senior guard having the ball.

Understood. But if we shot 71.7% then we would have made 11. Not 9. To win on the road, have to make FTs. My point is that FT shooting sometimes is a difference and it was last night (in addition to many other factors).

It is fair to call that a bit of Monday Morning Quarterbacking, your point is well taken. But I still think that a TO allows all of our players to be on the same page. That includes emphasizing the foul to give that we did not use.

DD missed a couple of FTs in the last couple of minutes. He played 38 minutes. I have to believe that has some effect on his accuracy.

Missed free throws and turnovers (by everyone) were the reason we lost this game. A turnover translates into one less opportunity to score for us and one more opportunity for the opposing team! Could be a four or five point swing! Turnovers contribute heavily to get down by 21 points! This team showed great heart in the second half!

I would like to have seen Davis wait till about 5 seconds and then drive to the basket for a layup or pass to an open man (Cunningham)? At the very least it goes to OT!

As bad as the Flyers played in the first half, at the end, this game was there for the taking!

Baby D is #27 in the nation (out of approximately 4500 D1 basketball players) for % minutes played. He is at 91.4% minutes played.
