This season may be very special. Awesome news, and Obi will be motivated to carry the team on his back deep into the NCAAT.

Obi played it exactly right. Test the waters, get feedback and return to the Flyers. Probably the plan all along.

A discussion of the pros and cons of a UD-Wright State game to benefit those affected by the storms.
This should carry us at least until the start of practice, and maybe Chris can try to entice Allen Iverson to a guest chat to discuss the subject with UDPriders. This will surely carry us to the start of the season.

This means under-the-radar is off-the-menu. This team will be respected nationally out the gate, up to and including a pre-season ranking. I sure hope the boys are up to this sort of attention and scrutiny.

A-10 may be ready but I doubt they are ready for us. We are going to be a handful, talented, deep, and big.

Crutcher, (Chatman at PG 10-15 minutes a night)
Chatman, Cohill
Ibi, Trey
Mikesell, Johnson
Obi, Tshimanga
Man, that's deep, and that's if we redshirt Sissoko.
My biggest questions:
• Where will Matos get minutes?
• Does Ibi or Matos get some time at the 2 with only 3 natural guards with Crutcher, Chatman, and Cohill?
• If Johnson isn't eligible until December 14, does Trey see time at the 4 to get some minutes, or does Sissoko get some PT early as a rim defender and rebounder?
• Does Crutcher get a more manageable MPG around 30 and get to go all out a little more with Chatman running PG 10-15 minutes a game?
• How deep into the bench will AG go on a consistent basis? 9, 10, 11?

Talked to Obi Toppin a bit ago. He said he went into process with an open mind but thought he wouldn't stay in draft unless he heard he would get drafted in first round. "Even if they said I could go first round, my option of coming back to school would have been there," he said.

Dayton's Obi Toppin on returning to UD and withdrawing from NBA draft: "I wanted to test the waters. Obviously, if had a good deal, I would have definitely went, but my intention was mostly coming back to school. I definitely wanted to play another year with my brothers.”

Obi Toppin said he told coach Anthony Grant several days ago he would return and his teammates knew as well. He was anxious to share the news with fans and said, "This was the deadline date, so I just felt like today was the perfect day to post it."

Busting Brackets have a fairly good look at Obi. One point off for saying Dayton Arena but overall not that bad of an article.

Two things:
1. He doesn't even mention Chase Johnson
2. His Duquesne ranking are based on Eric Williams Jr. being part of the team, which he no longer is.

Not sure how many watched the NBA Draft last night but Jeff Goodman reported this morning that 45 early entries wound up going undrafted. A lot of kids were getting some pretty bad advice.
I'm happy we got OBI back. Sidenote, the A-10 had zero draft picks. The only mention of the A-10 was that ex- Fordham player Paschall got drafted in the mid second round.

Georgia with the #2 pick, ugh.
2 BULLS
Anthony Edwards | Georgia | Fr | SG | 6-5, 215
The early favorite to be this year's Zion Williamson -- the player who absolutely takes the college world by storm with ferocious dunks and flashy highlights -- is Edwards. He's a high-flier with a mean streak who also possesses a pretty polished offensive game. He and Coby White in Chicago's backcourt could be dynamic.

This would be huge.

Georgia has 2 guys in the top 42, including #1 overall, ugh. Was not aware that Edwards is so highly touted.

I still contend that Obi has a shot at being an All-American this year...it depends on how much his game has progressed since last year.

I certainly wouldn't rule it out, but he'd have to be a 20+ point, 10+ rebound guy with UD winning the A10 and being a 4-5 seed or better. When it comes to non traditional schools, your team better be winning a whole bunch for any player to get individual national accolades.

I believe Edwards is pretty much the consensus "top newcomer" in college basketball this year. Good thing we get them early!

I am sure the kid is as good as anybody, but not consensus. ESPN had him as the #4 senior, and Rivals at #3. James Wiseman, the 7 foot Memphis kid was #1.

Sam Vecenie calls him one of the two best collegeget kids in attendance. He goes on to say that Obi is probably a late first rounder.

Do kids like Obi have to pay their own way to pre-draft workouts and this skills camp? The answer must be "yes". If they can't afford it, they just open a credit card and borrow against their future? Busted system, man.

Sometimes a little debt is worth the opportunity it provides. In this case, the chance to play in the NBA for a guy like Obi...is likely worth the risk.

I do not have a problem if a kid has to pay his own way for outside training and exposure. When I was a student if I wanted to go to a conference to network or get exposure, I had to pay for it. While one can argue the system is busted, I do not believe it is in this case. Paying for something like that should be considered an extra benefit that the normal student does not get.

I tend to agree, it's no more busted than the top debate team having to pay their own way to the world championships while in college. The only difference is that the basketball players are helping make the college rich. But the football players are probably a net drain on most colleges.

Clearly none of us understand how this goes as with this being a new beginning for us to realize the talent level of the U. In a nutshell make yourself familiar with the processes, as in don’t worry about anyone being over extended for said cause.

http://insider.espn.com/nba/insider/...etball-academy
"Toppin likely would have been named camp MVP had such an award existed. He had an overwhelmingly positive weekend that firmly catapulted him into the conversation as a first-round draft pick. Toppin doesn't possess elite size, length or strength for a power forward, but he was arguably the best athlete among the big men in attendance.
But the biggest revelation of the weekend was just how good a shooter he is. His shooting ability wasn't quite evident during his freshman season at Dayton, where he made just 11 of 21 3-pointers in 33 games. Toppin showed projectable mechanics, and he made a huge number of open spot-up opportunities with a quick, pure and confident release. He also possesses the ability to attack a closeout when run off the line and to even make basic passes on the move.
He demonstrated an impressive defensive versatility, both putting a body on bigger players and sliding with guards along the perimeter. He is a little upright in his stance at times, a product of his high-hipped frame, but he often is able to make up for that by his sheer athleticism and a strong feel for the game.
Toppin's excellent demeanor and willingness to do the little things -- and that he doesn't need plays called for him -- made him easy to play with, something that certainly endeared him to scouts who clearly came away impressed with his versatility. Toppin will be moving up at least 20 spots in our next mock draft update."

Fixed it....
where he "shot" just 21 3-pointers in 33 games. I think everyone who ever picked up a BB would take just 11-21 on 3-pointers....lol

It reads as though making just 11 of 21 isn't well accomplished, but I'm pretty sure the context of which it was written is meant to emphasize just how few (21) he attempted for what now appears to be a very solid perimeter threat.

It would seem that taking your first ever 21 three point shots in game mode spread over 33 games and making 11 is pretty rare. I give Obi an A for being very selective when and where he took them. But would not hold my breath that he repeats that in his first 21 this season. I would hope for high 30's which would keep the defense pretty loose and get the scouts attention.

Similar to what was posted above. I don't have espn insider, so I don't know if they mentioned the bit about Matos (I doubt it). Raise your hand if you knew the Obi - Matos connection? I'm surprised I haven't read that before.

Obi Toppin, Dayton
Toppin was one of the better college players at Nike Skills, with the obvious caveat being that he’s an older prospect with just one college season under his belt after taking a prep year and then academically redshirting. He was rather productive last year, winning A-10 Rookie of the Year as a focal point for a Dayton team that won 21 games. Toppin pops physically, plays with an edge and is willing to do the dirty work, and impressed at the camp while knocking down jumpers, showcasing some versatility on both sides of the ball at 6’8”, and making an intriguing case as a long-term role player. Yes, this sounds like the same story we heard with eventual second-rounder Eric Paschall a year ago, but Toppin is clearly tracking toward the 2020 draft. He’ll have to keep answering questions about what role he plays, but if the jump shot and energy levels stays consistent, those things may resolve themselves in time.

Sheq: If Toppin is such a high draft pick then why are the talking heads picking Gudmundsson from Davidson to be the Atlantic 10 Player of the year? Something is out of focus here? Let’s start a fan chant for Toppin to be POY!

Gudmundsson is gonna put up big numbers. He and Grady are gonna get the majority of Davidson's shots
UD I think is gonna have a more balanced attack

The best college players aren't always the best pro prospects. Khalid El Amin comes to mind.
If UD wins the conference and Toppin plays as expected, he will get fair consideration for POY.

I don't pay attention to, or even care about the nature of the NBA draft and what the NBA looks for these days. I only know that, in my mind, Obi was the best freshman I ever saw in a UD uniform, and he has the potential to be in the top 5, and even compete for the best player ever at UD, IMO.

Best freshman I ever saw was Roger. Obi may be top five all time, time will tell. Shame he will only be with us two years. All the other greats were four year players(early ones had to play frosh ball). That may keep him from top five all time. It's subjective anyway so opinions will vary.

If we are successful in beating Georgia, the real test for Obi will be Michigan State. I mentioned to an MSU friend of mine that I believe Obi will be the best player that MSU faces all year long. He is an astute college basketball fan. He gave me this look of confusion and stated: "Who is Obi?" I told him that he may find out sooner than later.

Keep in mind Obi was only a 2 star recruit, so he can not be that good!
I hope AG has a couple more 2 star recruits on the radar screen that can fill Obi's big shoes when he departs, which I hope is not after this season but in all honesty if he plays as we expect him too, he would be crazy to not take the NBA $ and run.

Obi had to sit out a year due to grades or qualification standards or whatever. Many P5 conferences have rules against signing such players, thus their ratings don't get pushed as high b/c so much of that is dependent upon how hard P5 schools are recruiting a kid. Obi has also worked his butt off and made a ton of improvement (and physical growth) over the last 2-3 years. He's truly blossomed from a 2 start kind of kid out of HS to a 5 star kind of man heading into year 3 at UD. Kudos to Obi; hope he strikes it big.

Interesting paragraph on Obi in that Mock:
Toppin was one of the better college players at the Nike Academy in August, showcasing a strong understanding of his role and an effective inside-out game that makes him an intriguing player to track this season. He was highly productive on the glass and as a scorer while working his way into big minutes last season, and while there’s not a great deal of upside involved here, physical, athletic bigs who can step out beyond the arc make for attractive investments in this range — on some level, you can’t have too many of those guys. He could be in for a breakout season at Dayton, and can play his way into the first round.
I would imagine a huge part of the NBA interest in Obi is the upside!

I don't think it's totally unfair. Obi can certainly afford to develop his ball handling, court awareness, and his shooting skill, but then again who can't. I don't think there's a Kevin Durant hiding inside him. BUT, having said that, where he is already is pretty good, and something that any team could make very good use of. That's why he's near the bottom of the first round. Guys in the top 10 are expected to get a lot better than they are currently.

Look at what Pascal Siakam has done for Toronto. I see Obi as having a higher ceiling even than him.

I love Obi and I think comparing him to Pascal Siakam is a heck of a comparison. In college, Siakam was a WAC Freshman of the Year then WAC Player of the Year as a Sophomore. He averaged 12.8 then over 20ppg. Was 22 during his first NBA season and continued to develop.
Siakam may be a bit more of a true athlete vs Obi. I think Siakam's edge is primarily due to lateral movement - Obi looks to have slightly tighter hips but Siakam is one of the best 2 or 3 athletes on an NBA court night and night out.
I think we all hope Obi has a ceiling like Pascal. Think about what that would do for recruiting!
