I don’t know who those guys were in white or what they did with the Dayton Flyers, but if you’re not doing anything on Wednesday, can you show up and play Flyer b-ball again?

What were some of the biggest beat downs of good teams at UD arena?
I can think of two.
1. Beating Pittby 25 or so
2. Defeating Notre Dame in 74

If you categorize “beat down” as beating a good team by 20 or more, then those are the only 2 I can recall without consulting the media guide.

The greatest W that I saw was the 76-62 beat down of North Carolina in the ‘67 National Semifinals. It did two things: as a high school student in NJ I truly believed UD would defeat UCLA in the finals (wrong); and I decided to go to UD.

Lot's of passing and less standing around in the first half. Not so much in the 2nd half but yes, they were taking the air out of the ball so I'm not going to blame them for that.
What I was happiest with that I don't think I saw anybody take a shot they shouldn't have. They worked the ball to get open and any low percentage shots were taken at the end of shot clocks. This team can be very special on offense if they continue to do this. This is one of the best shooting teams we've had.
Let me put this here because I can't find any other thread to put it in. I wanted to see how well Kostas defended against Tillman. I'm going to have to wait for the game in Virginia to see that but that's fine. It'll be a wrinkle that Tillman won't be familiar with and could be very important in helping us sweep these guys.

This was more in reaction to many on VCU forum saying that this is a "bad" Dayton team.
How can a bad team be doing this to us?
Sadly for them, we are ahead of them in RPI and solidified that tonight.

Have been a Flyer fan for decades growing up in the area, tonight was the first time in the Arena (dropping off D at school). What a treat, i can’t tell you how much we enjoyed the beat-down. This team shocked me with their play tonight. I couldn’t be more pleased for Coach Grant that his hard work is paying off. It leaves me wondering what the potential of this team could be?
BTW the Arena is a jewel, those new boards are incredible and the sound system is top notch. For a true Flyer fan the Arena will be a destination trip.

We decided to watch it on TV. Took me twice as long as usual to get home from work, and at that point we figured it would take us an hour to get to the Arena and in our seats. Saw it on The Deuce instead. Kudos to those who showed.

Whenever there is discussion regarding a team’s execution, I cannot help but think about the late USC and Tampa Bay Bucs Coach, John McKay.
After a particularly bad Buccaneer loss, McKay was asked by a reporter what he thought about his team’s execution, and he responded, “I am in favor of it.”

The wife and I were hesitant on making the drive to the Arena from Troy, but so happy that we did! What a game! I was at that X beatdown in 2010, but not the Pitt game. My Dad (who was not at the game last night) said the Pitt game was the loudest he had ever heard the arena. I think last night was loud, but a lot of people were just in awe and stunned. LOL.
Great night to be a Flyer!

I've been telling my friends since the St. Mary's game that there is a lot of talent on this team, it's just that it's mostly young and raw. Inconsistency is probably going to keep being a problem at times this year, I'm sure we're going to lose a few more we shouldn't, but things look to be finally starting to click with the youth and with learning a new coach and system. In AG I trust!

The Architect of "Havoc" Dismembered It With Passing
AG had his charges well prepared for "Havoc" and passed over it for layups and treys the entire first half. 66 points resulted. In the second half VCU mostly called off the dogs and reverted to more of a half court "D" which slowed the tempo and held UD to a mere 106 points for the game. Congrats to AG, staff and the team for a memorable win over a good VCU team.
I must say the light is turning on big time for Jalen Crutcher as he learns how he can be so much more than just a scorer. His near triple double had me thnking he was about to "out-Scoochie" Scoochie as a Freshman!

Didn't watch but was tracking on espn. I kid you NOT... with 5 to 7 minutes left in first half our Shooting Percentage was at or around 75%.
Merely dropped to 62% by games end. That is eff*n incredible.
Additionally not only did Crutch have a great game, But D Davis had 9 Assists to go with his 28 points. Just missed a Double Double!

This VCU fan, although not calling it the greatest thing he ever saw, found a way to enjoy the game. Excerpt of his post from the VCU board:
But credit does go to Dayton....they were simply on fire regardless of how well we guarded them......although we did do a pretty poor job of guarding them too. Nonetheless, I didn't get hassled or taunted by any of the UD fans...they were pretty cool. Kind of funny when our players were introduced and I was the only one standing and clapping. I just turned around and smiled....they jokingly said..."Hey, who let you in these seats and then they chuckled"
So outside of the complete embarrassment, it was overall a fun time. By the start of the 2nd I knew the game was over and just sat back and enjoyed an amazing shooting exhibition and tried not to think of the other team as VCU....it really helped. UD has a pretty nice arena too.

Shaka was the architect of Havoc, not AG.
I again hope that this game was a turning point.

I have been frustrated with my Flyers all season, yet this game was a beautiful thing to watch. In fact awesome is the more appropriate word.
However, we are never as good as our best game and never as bad as our worst game. I hope the film of this game is used to demonstrate what could be and work toward that end very day.
Roade is coming up next Saturday and I'll take a 1 point win but I sure would like to see another 100 point game! Go UD!

We just set the bar for the next 4 years with this group.
It will be interesting to see if we can find some thread of that offense on the road in Philly against a team that can give us fits. Whatever, at least our players got a taste of what could be if they do everything the Coach, and more importantly this MB , tell them to do!!
They just found out what they are capable of.

Several times during the second half, after we had missed 2-3 outside shots I said, “it’s time to go back inside.” We were shooting lights out and the 2-3 times I said that, we came down the floor and made another outside shot. It was that kind of magical night shooting.
But, most nights we will need to get it inside more in the second half to win. We seemed to be more balanced doing that in the first half than the second. It didn’t matter this game, but I hope they take a long look at the tape to see if there were scoring opportunities inside because we will need to capitalize on those most nights.

When you have as big of lead at the half that the Flyers had, I'm guessing they were told to run clock going into the 2nd half. Why not? To not do so is giving the opponent their only chance to get back into the game. I do however think there are better ways to run the clock then they were doing and that would be to continue to move and pass like they were doing in the first half, only for much deeper in the shot clock(or maybe wait 10 extra seconds before starting the offense). The Flyers were not doing that. They were stationary with the ball a lot more and therefore not getting the open shots. I think that's just a reaction to being told to run clock.

Excellent point and I agree. They weren’t taking bad shots. And every time I said it, we came down and made the next outside shot. I would guess the team was told to keep shooting if you’re open. When you’re that hot, don’t cool off by backing off open shots. So I have zero complaints about the shot they took in either half.
I’ll drill down on my post above here... I hope they look at the film to see if there was inside opportunities to score or deploy the inside-outside options because it’s unrealistic to think we will have another shooting night like this one. I hope they become a team whose offense runs like a well-oiled machine scoring inside and out to keep defenses guessing.
I’ll also add I hope they study what they did rebounding in this game. VCU came in with a +10 in rebounding. We won that battle 33-26. That’s as much of a surprise as our hot night shooting. Granted, you make as many shots as we did, you take away defensive rebounding opportunities from VCU. But still... we did a very good job rebounding in this game. I’d love to see a breakdown of what I’ll call rebounding positioning on those shots we made. If they hadn’t gone in, were we in position to have a shot at getting the ball back?
VCU is going to take this game tape and learn a lot from it. We will meet them again in Feb, so we need to do the same. This was a dominate win, but we are a long way from being a dominate team. We have to learn as much as they do from the film.

We all know deep inside UD will have a bumpy ride the rest of this season ... for wins and losses .... but until otherwise proven ...
I believe the Bonnies game was a turn around game for the Flyers ... arguably they couldn't have had the VCU outcome without the Bonnies win. I saw effort, purpose, desire, confidence against VCU. For the Bonnies game I only saw effort and desire.
It is Ok ... break my bubble!!!!

He was probably sitting in C-time's seats, since he understandably sold his seats. Lol.

Sounded like he had better seats than mine.
FYI. Only 2 games left on the ticket exchange. Already have made a profit on the season. I count that as a positive.

If I recall correctly, this was the Brian Gregory dress up in boxing gloves and a cape doing LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out" pregame ritual?!?!

I agree with you. We look totally different than the early season. As lowly as Richmond is, any win on the road in Conference is a good win as well. I believe we are positioned well to go on an A10 run not unlike the 2014 team. We are ahead of their breakout run by several weeks. In 2014 our desperate 4 game losing streak in late January started Jan 18 and ended Jan 29. Then we won 9 of the next 10 to end the regular season with momentum. And finished the post-season with a 4-2 record. It could happen.

SLUFLYER, how are things going for the Billikens? What do people think of Travis Ford? How long until SLU makes the NCAAT again?

I’m not going to hold my breath in expectation of a repeat of the 2013-14 run, but it’s obvious that the team is getting more and more comfortable running AG’s offensive scheme. In that regard, if they can continue the good ball movement, then most nights, scoring enough points won’t be a problem. If the defense can show similar improvement, this team has a chance to have some fun in March.

SLU has moments where they look like they can compete now with the best in the conference, similar to us I would say. They're really young, have been making/repeating some of the same mistakes. They really struggle from behind the arc.
They have some decent players, a couple solid frosh in French and Goodwin, some solid contributors in street clothes while the Title IX issue is resolved and a big time recruit coming next year. If the recruit is as good as advertised, and is willing to work hard (that's a question mark), then SLU could very well compete for an NCAA bid as early as next year. In two years, if the all the parts remain, for sure.
SLU fans remain very optimistic about Travis Ford (few realize that he's not had much, or any success, in the NCAA tournament) and have demonstrated a reasonable amount of patience with him and the team. He'll get another pass this year, unless this team really bottoms out the rest of the way.
I expect UD to have a competitive game with SLU here.

Not a 20-point game, but the biggest (unexpected) beatdown I ever saw was the season-opener against Syracuse in '77-'78. We had them down 20 at the half in the era before 3-point shots. Wonder how many days Jack Zimmerman wakes up thinking he was born 25 years too soon?

Well, I like his resume, and I think he will work out.
But, I agree, his NCAAT record is Oliver Purnell-esque: TF is 0-6 in the NCAAT. OP is also 0-6 in the NCAAT.
TF NCAAT seeds: 15, 8, 7, 5, 9, 9.
Definitely should have been able to win a game as a 5 seed. The other 5 games were as a heavy underdog, once, or more of a toss-up game, 4 times.

Travis does have 1 NCAAt victory to his resume. His first year at Okla St., they were an 8-seed and beat Tennessee (77-75) as a 9-seed at UD Arena in the 1st round, losing to top seed Pitt in round 2 by 8 points.
I have him at 1-6 in the NCAA tourmament

Yes, you are correct, 1-6 in the NCAAT, I screwed that up.
