We better learn from this
One thing that stood out was every time we had a chance to do something good, like close in on the lead, or take the lead, some player did something stupid. Really stupid.
Crutcher with a silly foul. Williams with a silly foul. Fouling a 3pt shooter. Blocking out on both ends. Clearly we have to learn to finish a game. We made the comeback and then acted like the game was over.
Kudos to Kostas. What a difference maker. DD and Landers get a nod.
In the end, in spite of all the mistakes (including missed free throws), their guy had the hot hand and took it to us.
The potential is there. We have to learn from this game.

Yup... Everything good seemed to have a negative the next trip down the court. Hard to win like that.

Crosby played well with 9 points (2/6 FG and 4/5 FT), 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and only 1 turnover. Also played defense better than Crutcher Flabbergasted he was in at the end and not Crosby.

Nothing against Crutcher, he will be very good. But on one occasion he forced a shot of the break and on another, at a very critical time, he made an untimely pass to X that forced him into a charge, at least they called it that way.

Passing there was a horrible decision by Crutcher.
I would say that I'm confused by the substitution pattern UD is using right now, but I honestly don't see one yet.

New coach plus young team equals up and down results early on. This is gonna be one heck of ride, so enjoy if your heart can handle it, unless it can't.

We will learn from this game SDF. We'ill get better as the season goes on. But, let's get a grip on expectations. This wasn't Duke, Michigan State, Kansas or Kentucky. It was HOFSTRA! As Always, though, GO Flyers!

Yes, it was Hofstra, but I must tell you those two guards were very good ballplayers. In fact, in the ODU exhibition game, the Ball State game, and now this game, we have been schooled by some very good guards. Our guard play must get a whole lot better if we are to compete.

Landers is kind of a disaster offensively right now.

Let's be honest about the best case scenario for this season. We aren't going to play consistent enough to put together an at-large resume. Our season starts March 7th in Washington DC. We need to be good enough then to win 4 (or 5) games.
Between now and then AG needs to figure out what we have and who we are. That means odd substitution patterns. It means guys you want on the court sitting on the bench. And it means living through some ugly ball at times.
This team needs to grow from this and get better as the season goes on. We need to be clicking when the A10 tourney rolls around. We are a long way from that, but it's a long time from now.

Dayton appeared to be lazy on offense to me. They settled for jump shots instead of driving to the basket for a closer jump shot or to go to the rim. They were missing most of those key outside shots, as well. Where Pollard would drive to the basket and maybe get fouled, we, instead took a baseline jumper and missed it and then did not get the rebound. Unfortunately, for the last couple years Pollard would miss the free throws and not be able to finish the play. I particularly winced while watching Xeyrius Williams at 6’9” stop and settle for a deep baseline jumper and miss. While he is way outside taking that shot, he is not inside getting into position to get the rebound. There is a great absense of players on this team who can pull down a rebound or even show an interest in rebounding.
Again, Pierce does not play. The boxscore does not list him. He must be flat awful and slow in practice? We can only speculate?
Cunningham is our only rebounder and he had foul trouble (4 fouls)?

I disagree. Our guards and wings can board, but it appeared we were deferring to someone else on rebounds last night. All 5 guys need to put a body on someone, anyone. WE were timid. Same deal on loose balls. Lot of players standing around waiting for a teammate to do the heavy lifting. Kostas had 10 rebounds on effort alone.

I guarantee that OU will be very hungry for this win tonight since this is a chance for them to knock off an in-state heavyweight.
We better come ready to play.

I'm guessing here. But either John Crosby had attitude issue last night, or tweaked an injury or something that kept him off of the court. Anyone else?

Another guess: CAG might be thinking that Crutcher has more upside than Crosby, so he left Crutcher in to get some early-season, end-game experience. CAG might be looking forward to the A10 Tourney as well. Just another perspective.

Yeah, I thought about this but let's face it, the first game of a 3 game tournament that often decides your fate come March is no time to sacrifice a game for experience. Not saying that wasn't what CAG was doing, but if he was, that's inexcusable.
I think it's more likely that something Crosby said or did got him benched which is okay with me. He certainly needs to listen to his coach and not feel that he's so important that during critical points in the season, he can pull stunts that wouldn't normally be tolerated because he thinks he's got the coach over a barrel. Again, just saying it's more likely than the get the freshman experience scenario. Not saying that's what happened for sure.

Crosby was making nothing happen. His two assists were just fortunate cases where the scorer made a shot, rather that him setting them up. Still, Crosby is better defensively, rebounding and would have been well rested. Think AG must have been making a point. Shame it may have cost us the game.

Most definitely a message being sent to two in particular. Kudos to AG for having the forsight to look past one meaningless game in the grand scheme of his tenure to set things straight in Flyerland.
Crosby's defense last night was far from good and Josh was playing uninspired and stupid basketball. Who knows what else is going on behind the scenes but you don't leave those 2 out for the last 10 minutes if all is well.
If this team is as talented as some seem to think, then this loss will mean nothing if lessons are learned. For those of us who think the only way this team is dancing is winning the A10 tourney, then this could be the Hoosier moment this group needs to buy in to what AG is doing and thus improves their chances to be a team and still standing at the end. I applaud AG for doing what he is paid to do.
Maybe tonight we'll get a glimpse of a difference in focus and integrity.
