You know guys, give it a break. One thing probably certain this year - Wright State's in the tournament and we'll be lucky for an NIT bid.

I'm with him on the basketball game, but have never comprehended the so called connection between UD, Wright State, and MLK Celebration...other than a reach and a stretch of inaccurate social non-sense. Don't Get me wrong, I respect, admire, and appreciate Reverend King; but what does it have to do with the Gem City Jam?...nothing!

Current 2018 RPI:

WRIGHT STATE 67
dayton 75

Bring Back the JAM!

Might be a bit early to say WSU is in the tourney, currently 67 rpi and SOS of 157, having a good year, nice win over NKU, but may have to win the conference to dance. You are correct that we have long odds for the dance and NIT. Doable but have to go on some sort of streak.

Even if WSU wins out, an at-large bid is out of the picture IMO. They already have 5 losses.

They could only afford maybe 3 losses this year IMO, if they wanted an at-large.

A NIT bid though is still possible. I would say a rpi no worse than the 70's would maybe get them a NIT bid. Or if they win the HL regular season title, and then lose in the HL tourney, they automatically get a NIT bid.

1 loss, 31 rpi, NCAAT probably
2 losses, 36 rpi, NCAAT maybe/probably
3 losses, 37 rpi, NCAAT maybe/probably
4 losses, 53 rpi, NIT
5 losses, 58 rpi, NIT
6 losses, 69 rpi, NIT probably
7 losses, 82 rpi, maybe nothing

So, I would say no more than 1 more loss to get a NIT bid.

Rpiforecast has them only losing 1 more, NKU at the Nutter Center.

UD-WSU and note on FRHS's Al Souder

Beatty Town Coach......glad someone agrees on UD-WSU game!

I think the two schools can make the same connection to honor MLK Day as the NBA has. 11 or so games on the day on tv. Many mentions of the work of MLK. Each player wearing a MLK Day "I had a Dream" shooting shirt. Well done NBA. With the addition of several sports networks I see no reason why the game/event would not be on national TV.

We all hear different things. I've heard that WSU demands a home and home contract in order to play the Flyers. If I'm WSU I play UD one time, anywhere, prove your competitivness......and see what happens. Along that line, regarding another game, if xU offers only a one game contract at xU....UD should accept for the same reason I mention above for WSU.

Side note: any of you northern area UDPriders attend the tribute to Al Souder at Fort Recovery Sat nite? Great event. Raised $8,000 for Alzheimer Assn, the desease from which Coach Souder is suffering.

GO FLYERS!

www.bracketmatrix.com moved WSU into the 14 seed slot, so they are the bracketologists' favorite to get the auto bid from the HL.

Auburn up to a 4.

Rhody up to a 7.

Bonnies still in the next four out.

Penn 16.

You mean you'd rather play them over Auburn, Mississippi State, or St Mary's because WSU wants home-home and those are the ones we'd have to replace.

No, I named some teams I'd swap for them. I didn't say they make it possible...

Actually, I'd rather play OU or Akron than them, but I assume you understand the difference between a buy game and a home-and-home.

Now I have to go stand in the corner for ten minutes because I swore I wouldn't post on this thread.

Three things are certain in life; death, taxes, and the annual appeal to play WSU on MLK day.

Maybe if WSU makes the NIT a few years in a row, we can resume the Gem City Jam, whereby they could become the elusive 15th away or neutral game.

I think that even you, as dug in as you are, know that Dayton vs. Wright State is not a game national TV audiences are clamoring for. But you want it. And I know you are not alone in wanting it. So you're looking for a gimmick.

But playing it "to honor" the legacy of Dr. King is just a really forced, and completely nonsensical gimmick. There's just no real connection between Dayton and MLK. If you wanted to pitch the University of Memphis, or maybe UAB, playing on MLK Day simply BECAUSE ITS MLK DAY, that makes perfect sense to me. Coming out of commercials, you'll see shots around town of the landmarks associated with Dr. King and the civil rights movement. I like it.

When the game used to be played, it was branded the Gem City Jam. Fans of both schools got why it was called that. It was positioned as a geographic rivalry. Nothing wrong with that. To try to make it something more seems a bit foolhardy to me, but if you were really hellbent on trying by injecting some history, then December 17 would be my date. It's not a holiday, but that's when the Wright Brothers made their first flight. You've got Wright State as in the Wright Bros. And you've got the Dayton Flyers as in flight. I guess that's something. Still seems forced to me, but at least it's an actual connection between the schools, the town where it would be played, and a date which falls within the typical Out of Conference period of the schedule.

The NBA owns MLK Day as far as basketball goes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPw-3e_pzqU

The game has 0 appeal outside of the city. Probably less outside of Ohio. If there is a way to play the game without it negatively impacting our schedule as far as Home and Home and not hurt our RPI, I don't have a problem with it. The RPI issue has to be viewed from the historical vantage point, not just how they are this year.

In 4 years at UD, I met 1 person from Wright State. In the 30 years since I graduated, I met 1 more. It's fine if it is good for the area. But any thought that the average basketball fan outside the area cares or would care is just silly. The effort and sacrifice we commit to scheduling should reflect that.

Perhaps, but then UD has to win the A-10 tourney to get an NCAA spot as well. Barring and undefeated run from now until title game loss.

Besides, Isn't a win at NKU the equivalent to a big time national division one victory?? That was the defensive posture coming from those who proclaimed UD's private scrimmage with NKU to be a necessary step forward for a young flyers team to compete against major division one talent!?!?!? You know, the likes of Northern Kentucky!!

Did UD win the scrimmage? Or, is that all, well, you know, clandestine? In other words, they lost, and no one wants to discuss it!

So we agree, WSU is not a lock, and are having a good year. The NKU win was a good one and UD faces long odds to make the tournament. Didn't know the scrimmage with NKU was an issue that nobody wants to discuss.

Okay, you can kick out Miss. State; who cares? There is no one around the country saying, hey did you see that low end awful looking shootout between traditional basketball powerhouse Miss. State and the highly ranked Dayton Flyers? I mean nothing reals in a recruit from Mississippi, California, and Florida, like a Dayton @ Miss. state game.

I guess your logic is, by all means better to lose to Miss Sate by two, then risk losing to Wright State, how embarrassing. You do make excellent point!

Because, like all the other power five teams, Miss. State has such a lengthy history of making final fours and winning national titles.

Exclamation Not my point; and now you know!

Right, we do agree on the reality of at-large bids; as pretty much everyone would. However, my point is this; Since so many of you hate the UD/Wright State game scenario, allegedly because UD is strapped for home game cash...that's more likely an excuse only (see $72 million for renovation)...it was worth noting that Wright State's at NKU road win, is like beating Kansas on the road in the minds of those who insisted that UD just had to scrimmage a major D1 opponent...NKU.

When UD scrimmaged NKU it is presented as a significant D1 opponent; it wasn't, nor will it ever be; but if Wright State beats them on the road, well, that's just "a nice win". In other words, internal bias against Wright State exist on this board, regardless of reality.

Understanding that UD might want an extra dollar, but they are not hurting for an extra dollar...what-so-ever. Simple matter is that UD doesn't want the game, and I fully recognize that, but I personally believe it is a mistake. Under no circumstances do I believe it is about the money; that's just an old excuse, and that's all it is.

Folks try to act like those who want the "Gem City Jam" just don't understand the old dried-up fake scheduling model. Trust me, we painfully understand the old boring thing!

We also understand that UD has zero rivals in the region, zero rivals in the state, zero rivals in the A10 Conference (which they hate and are ashamed of), and zero rivals across the nation...none...nothing, and it is heinously boring, and offensive.

If Wright State makes a sweet sixteen, UD administration will say oh well it's just luck, they aren't in our "class"; kind of like they feel about all other A-10 schools...amazing.

Here is a clue: If The Ohio State University, or UC or Mighty Xavier, agree to play UD in any format; UD better agree to it and suck-it-up, because any hypothetic deal that might be possible, will be gone for good, faster than UD can say a Hail Mary, if they hem-hall around about the details.

All of those games against Miami, Xavier, UC, Wright State, Ohio State, ND, Marquette, and DePaul, and U. of L., et.al., those games made folks fall in love with the program. It was in-fact the rivalry, the history, and extra ties and emotions, that made all such a bid deal, and so much fun. And since, UD will not be in the Big East anytime soon, you have to find other opportunities to play said games. And right now, UD is doing a lousy crappy bang-up job of this.

It's not always the Wright State game pursue that we want, but right now, we would take anything. I am practically on the verge of getting my BEAT DUQUESNE T-SHIRT. And that really ought to tell you something; aside from my own psychosis that is.

Folks, its not that hard. Why does it take TOSU (notice the "The") hiring a new coach for the administration at other regional universities to get a clue? Chris Holtmann has verbally re-arranged the college basketball pecking order in this state. When he was hired, he instantly realized, that he cannot have the preponderance of Ohioan's thinking that OSU is behind Xavier, Cincy, and Dayton; no, he took charge of the situation, and changed the perception instantly, with a great political effort to put OSU back on the level with these other schools. He did so, without even playing a game. You don't duck and dodge; not the way, but rather, if WSU wants to play you, line them up, hit them in the mouth a few times, and asked them if they would like to keep coming back for more...that's what you do.

This stuff is chicken crap at this point. Line them up, play the game, hit them in the mouth, and make them sorry they ever asked.

Why is this typically brought up when they are doing well? Their financials are a mess from what I heard and yet they got money to spend on their program. They owed money to the UD owned Marriott from the canceled Presidential Debate debacle and were sued and then the suit was dropped.

Yea we want them on our schedule ......

Parochial View

This fascination with establishing a jam to me is very parochial. It is compared to the Chili contest down in Cincy.

Well there are a few things that the Chili fest has, for almost as far back as I can remember, both X and the Bearcats have both been ranked or at least one member in the duel has been ranked. The contest established a hatred almost national following .... just to see who done what to whom and the final score.

The jam had never done that. Yes, some say but it benefits the local community! Guess what? UD has accomplished that feat all by themselves! We don't need no stinkin WSU to do that which has already been done!

Also anyone heard of the First IN and the First Four? How many times and years has UD done this to benefit the community? About as long as the Chili fest I gather.

So it would be exciting for the game .... and quickly forgotten by any press stories in about the time espn runs a story about DUKE v NC! Yes but we need to do this!

Lets play WSU and forgo any options to bring in a potential home and away with some other brand name. Yes I hear ya naysayers! But what about us playing IUPUI? What is the difference you say? Well for one IUPUI is in the same conference as WSU. SO we get rid of one and swap in another at the same or almost the same level!

I think we need to focus (as it appears we have) on attempting to bring in top level teams here in our house. Tagging WSU eliminates one more date that we could not use to match up with a upper level teams open date.

Well I have completed my rant for the year on this yearly topic!

See ya next year in this similar thread!

I have an interest in playing schools from larger conferences. The Horizon league teams offer little, if any , benefit. Hey recruit, want to play against Wright State, or hey recruit, want to play against Auburn, Miss St, Ga Tech, etc. I'm not interested in giving up a home game to play at WSU.

Personally, I get more excited about playing top "mid major" basketball schools like St. Mary's most recently, than I do the likes of Auburn and Miss State.

But I don't disagree with you there's no one in the Horizon who fits the profile of an exciting opponent. At least not by themselves. But let's not rule them all out just yet! You see, we can attach a dead celebrity to each game. This could be a game changer!

Consider the following:

Dayton vs Wright State to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King
Dayton vs Northern Kentucky to honor the legacy of David Bowie
Dayton vs Oakland to honor the legacy of Abraham Lincoln
Dayton vs IUPUI to honor the legacy of Andre the Giant
Dayton vs UIC to honor the legacy of John Belushi
Dayton vs Youngstown State to honor the legacy of Sonny Bono
Dayton vs Green Bay to honor the legacy of Hugh Hefner
Dayton vs Milwaukee to honor the legacy of Tupac Shakur
Dayton vs Detroit Mercy to honor the legacy of William Shakespeare
Dayton vs Cleveland State to honor the legacy of Genghis Khan

Still not excited? Okay, forget it.

So they wait until UD is having it's worst season in a long time and WSU is having it's best season in a long time. I guess they are saying UD is normally much better than WSU, but maybe this year it would be a good game. They also say Lunardi has WSU in the NCAA. That is simply because he projects them as getting the Horizon League automatic bid. Now back to the corner, this time for 20 minutes.
