UD parting ways with basketball recruit Thomas
COURTESY OF THE DAYTON DAILY NEWS
UD parting ways with basketball recruit Thomas
University of Dayton basketball coach Archie Miller officially cut ties with highly regarded point guard recruit Jevon Thomas on Tuesday, leaving the Flyers with a short window to address a desperate shortage in their backcourt.
Rest of the story....

I am sure Flyer fans, like myself, are disappointed by the loss of Thomas. However, based upon the rather abrupt comments of Archie, it seems to me that he had long decided that Thomas was going to be some sort of academic or team problem. I think it is better to nip it in the bud at this stage than to let him become a problem during the course of a season. Now, we really need a back-up point and quite likely another 2-guard.

After reading the article, it appears that there was more than academics at play in this "mutual" decision. It sure seemed from AMs comments that he was either highly disappointed or even disgusted with developments surrounding JT's status since all ties have been cut between UD and the kid. Given the kid's potential, it's disappointing that things didn't work out, but better now than after his enrollment.

Kind of nice to have a coach now that doesn't use coach-speak and dance around the issue. I have noticed with Archie, he doesn't *****foot around the issue.

It's possible, and I hope so. If so, that means AM has been working hard to recruit another PG all along. But it could be that these comments are just to make it clear to any other recruits that they don't have to worry about Thomas coming along later to compete for playing time. One year with guaranteed playing time as the primary back-up followed by 3 years as a likely starter - that has to be really appealing to somebody. Hopefully somebody good.

AM: “It’s based off a mutual decision that both parties agreed upon. We wish him well in the future.”
Seems this comes right out of the 'coach speak' hand book on what to say when a player transfers or is no longer wanted by a program - can't see what's so different from what nearly every other coach (including previous ones at UD) say when they cut ties with a player.
Compare it to BG on Plummer: "After meeting with Norman, we all agreed that it would be best for him to complete his college career at another school," Gregory said, "It goes without saying that we wish Norman the very best in the future."

There have been 2 Harris articles quoting Archie on Thomas not coming. The first quote included less "coach speak" and made it clear that Dayton would not be pursuing him. Only the last 2 sentences were the typical "coach speak" IMO.
"The highly touted senior from New York City reportedly will spend another year in prep school and reclassify as a 2013 recruit, but Miller said the Flyers don’t intend to pursue him next year."
“Jevon will not be attending — not enrolling — he will not be attending Dayton. There’s a difference,” Miller said. “You can start saying he’s going to prep school. Well, are you still recruiting him? Will he be enrolling? No. He will not be attending the University of Dayton. It’s based off a mutual decision that both parties agreed upon. We wish him well in the future.”
"Miller wouldn’t say why UD soured on Thomas, who de-committed from St. John’s."

Reading between the lines in Archie's comments, his current attitude toward Thomas seems to be a combination of (a) "Don't let the door hit you in the @$$ on the way out!" and (b) Jimmie Binnie's comment after Meacham left, which was along the lines of "If you don't want to be here, then leave."
Ironically enough, to recall the old "Archie" comic strip, it sounds like Thomas was still chasing Veronica (a BCS 'ship) while Betty (UD) was there for the asking. Probably just as well in the end. We've already had one "princess" at PG in the past couple of years - we don't need another one.

Agree. Also, our previous coach was just as firm and blunt when TM left, talking about commitment and loyalty, as AM was here.

This is pure speculation, but it seems that former Quality Education Academy player Josiah Turner was recently asked to transfer from Arizona by Sean Miller after multiple violations of team rules. I wonder if QEA coach Isaac Pitts had any hand in Thomas decommitting as a form of retaliation against the Miller brothers.
