Late start as SIUE and Toledo goes 5. Toledo wins it.
A note before our match starts - Watched a bit of both the Toledo/Wright State and Toledo/SIUE match on ESPN3. Toledo won both. The Rockets were something like 6-23 last year with no road wins. In both matches today they may well have had less overall talent than their opponents. However, they battled really really hard, coming from large deficits in several sets. Was realy impressed with the Rocket libero. Her court positioning and digging were excellent. I think Toledo will be much improved over last year.
Let's go Flyers.

Great come from behind for Toledo especially after getting swept by the Flyers. SIUE and Toledo very well matched and competitive matches.
Now for the Marquee game....don't take these ladies lightly, Go Flyers!

That was a heck of a set point. Flyers take set 1 25-23. Fun to see it on the front page when you open the WatchESPN app.

UD takes set 1 25-23. Jamie started at Rightside. She subbed in and immediately got a block for our 4 th point. Next time around she comes in and immediately gets 2 more blocks for our 16 th and 17 th pints. 17 was a solo block. We had to find some blocking from the right OH. Next week we go against 2 great OH1s. Xavier's Bressler was Big East POY. Northwesterns Abbott is Big 10 all-conference. Both take about half their teams swings. We have to have some ready to stop them.

UD 25-17. Up 2-0. I was noticing both Jess and Lauren were going cross court and getting dug. I wrote. Our OH need to start swinging down the line. Lauren must have "heard" me because she swung down the line 4 times and scored on 3 of them. Jess also had some great swings out of the back row for kills. And Jamie got another block. Need to close this put in 3.

I thought when Jane came in, our setting got better. She was able to get her hitters closer to the net in better spots. She pulled about 3-4 balls out of her rump right by the net to set a ball one-handed and help get UD the point. When she was setting Amber and Kendyll down the middle, WSU didnt have many answers.
I didnt think our serve-receive was very good for most of the match. We were chasing points too often. Thought our serving was pretty decent however with not many errors.
Definitely a work in progress. But to get out of the weekend 3-0 with a young team and lots of players taking on new roles, gotta feel good. This team is going to hit a few potholes. But by mid-October I think we will be much improved from where we are now. Whether we're the best in the A10 remains to be seen.

Great start to the season. They were far from perfect but will get better and better. It was good that they lost a set when they played poorly.
Nice to see Jamie get more playing time. It was pretty obvious at the Red/Blue scrimmage that it would be hard to keep her off the court. When you watch her play she has the quickness of a much smaller player. On one play in the morning match she was playing right side. The other team dinked it on UD's left side about 3' from the sideline. Jamie almost dug that ball coming all the way over from the opposite side. That must have been a great team with her and Brooke playing together.
I do think the passing will improve with some more playing time.

Exactly what one would hope for on the opening weekend for a young team. Tested but not broken. Middle of the road competition. Played lots of players.
Red Hawks on Tuesday at Frericks. They lost to UNI yesterday and Michigan today, before winning over SLU in 5 this afternoon. Should be a much stronger test than the 3 teams this weekend.

Congrats to Amber for making the all-tourney team. They only picked one p,Ayer from each team at this tourney. Usually the team that wins the tournament get 3 players on this team, and in my opinion that would have been Kendyll and Margo. These three ladies were the most consistant every match. Other than the lack of blocking the first match, all three performed at a very high level all weekend.
Other bright spots were Lauren Bruns having a monster match against WSU. Hit over 300 from the left OH and took 41 swings. She found the down the line shot in the final two sets last night and they did nothing to stop it. That was about 5 of her kills all of Lauren's attacked are from the front row. She needs to work hard on improving her back row skills so she can become a 6 rotation player. She is just a sophomore.
Jess carried a heavy load this weekend and she will continue to do so as others work on their games. Her hitting numbers weren't always great, but she is being asked to do something that no other OH1 has had to do (i.e. Alania and Kray and Amanda before her). Jess is the only back row hitter in the rotation right now. All those other hitters played with another player also hitting out of the back row. That's harder to defend. When there are 4-5 hitters on the court versus 3-4, it's harder to cover all those hitters every time. When we have only one hitter that plays back row it's easier to cover her defensively. Jess held her own carrying a heavy load for this team. And, Jess serving is out BEST rotation. I'm going o look up the play by play numbers but all three matches we score a boat load of points when Jess was serving. She did a great job serving a ball that resulted in an attack from the other team we could handle and put us in position to score. That rotation is a keeper. We score a ton in it.
And I agree, Jamie Peterson needs to be on the court. Very athletic and we needed another blocker. Almost every time she came in last night she immediately got a block. I know it was 3 of 4 times and might have been 4 of 5. It was awesome. And to be fair, in a typical freshman performance, I should say she also got stuffed 3 or 4 times on her swings. Some were the sets. Some were a learning experience for Jamie to make a better decision in the air. She will learn from all that and only get better. She too needs to commit to improving her back row skills. I think everyone that sees her now is reminded of Kray. Jamie can hit from behind the 10' line. On one play the ran a reverse slide. On a slide the middle swings out to the Rightside behind the setter and "slides" down the net horizontally to hit the ball. Very hard to defend because the blockers don't know where contact is going to be made and thus don't know where to set the block.
On a reverse slide the Rightside OH, who is behind the setter runs around in front of the setter to attack from the middle. Jamie did that and basically jumped from the 10' line on the attack - for her best swing of the weekend. It was picture perfect for a kill. It's going to be fun to watch this young lady the next four years.
Finally, I was at Iowa State last year when we went 0-3. This is way better.
