Rhode Island Match
Our only regular season match with RI so we need to take care of business. Two most impressive stats for RI is they are 4-0 in the a10 and have not dropped a set. All 4 wins were sweeps.
They also have 5 players who are digging more than 2 digs/set. That is unusual. It's more common to have just 3 players over 2. So with UDs young hitters this might cause us some problems putting down on the floor.
They also have a senior-heavy rotation lead by a very good senior setter. With our block having been a step behind until last weekend we really need our blockers to repeat their efforts from last weekend.
Their MB Self is a top 30 blocker and hitting just under .400. And their OH1 is a senior. All 3 of these players were 2nd team A-10 last year. They beat UD back in Oct 2013 at home. I'm sure they would like one more against the Flyers and this might be their last chance.
We need to bring our best again for this one.

SLU and Fordham in a good match. SLU takes the first 25-23 and is up 13-10 in 2nd. We need SLU to win because we play them twice and they count twice in our rpi calculation. Need them to have the best record possible. They also have the toughest OOC schedule so the teams that beat them should have good records which helps us.

RI takes a 1-0 lead winning set 1 25-19.
The camera is from the end zone -- which I really like. We are having problems closing the block to the outside. Their setter is very good -- and she is freezing our middles so their OHs get one-on-one swings - making it easy to score. They had 21 kills to our 11. Surprised we didn't lose by more with that difference.
Will need to come up with a solution this set. The most outrageous stat is we took 25 swings and have zero errors and still lost the set. They have 14 digs we have 7. That's what you get when hitters go against 1 blocker. It's almost impossible for the back row defense to dig anything.

RI 2nd TO with UD up 19-10 and Maggie on a serving run. Need to close this out -- under 15 points would be nice to make a statement.

Glad to hear that I am not the only one who really likes the camera from the end zone. It shows how good the sets are, and how good the blocking is much better. It is also a view which is much closer to a player's view
It looks like that first set loss got the team's attention, lol
It's always nice when all of your outside hitters are hitting .400 or better

Tied 1-1 with UD taking the 2nd 25-17. After we scored 20 points, we finally made an attack error -- finished with 3, but that is really good when you have taken 50 swings.
Closed the digs stat - they still lead it 17-22, but we got under some that set. Freshman Jordan Albarran played the back row for Laura that set. She did well on her serve and took one swing from the back. They "hide" her on serve receive.

I noticed last weekend SLUs venue had basketball lines on the court. I thought that was built for VBall - so I was a little surprised. Nice to see Rhode Island's floor it volleyball only.

They held RI to .057 and .036 hitting percentage in sets 2 and 3, that is a huge turnaround

12-7 UD - TO RI. Amber is hitting .333. Everyone else is hitting .400+. We are doing a LOT of things right again this match. You don't have 5 hitters with those hitting percentages by chance. Total team effort.

UD Wins 25-21 to go 17-1 for the season. Everyone played well. Our OHs hit .370, .400 and .435. You will win every day with those kind of hitting percentages from your OHs. They just take so many swings and the sets were spread out to all 3 making it very difficult for RI to key in on one player. They probably keyed on Amber who only got 11 swings. And our middles held RI's Self to .000 and 1 block in 4 sets (.25/set). She leads the A-10 in blocks and hits close to .400 before this match.
Just a great job by everyone.
On to Fordham who is getting better. They have a really good Freshman who I'm guessing is getting better each week and thus they are playing better. Name is maybe???Olivia Fairchild?? and I think she plays OH. I'll look it up before tomorrow.

Both men women bball will use the side court for practice if needed. Very difficult to judge where the vball lines are which is a detriment to both vball teams, however SLU is accustomed to it.
Former vball coach was disappointed that it wasn't vball only.

From the stats it seemed we had a fair number of service errors - certainly compared to URI. Any comments from those who watched the match?

We did. The only good think there is they didn't come at critical times like they usually do. As mentioned above, we also had problems closing the block for about a set and a half. But to the teams credit they figured out RIs setter and did a pretty good job the rest of the way. Our block is still a work in progress but it took a big step forward last weekend. Just gotta keep working hard and getting better very week. And RI went after Laura with their serves early and got her a couple times. It's probably why we saw Jordan in later sets. It happens to every back row serve receive player. We've seen it with Jess earlier in the year. And as UDBrian has stated, if you get out of sync in serve receive on any given night, it's very hard to snap out of it in the same match. Depth is always good and Jordan came in and served well and played well even tho we hide her on serve receive. I also thought Jess had another great night tonight. She played well against SLU last week. And Jamie continues to light it up. For a freshman she just makes so few errors and her swing is just so smooth.

I stand corrected on that block comment. We finished with 16 blocks which is outstanding even with our slow start in the first set and a half. Best blocking match so far this season. You have got to think they have been working on it.

Lauren Bruins also had a monster night. 8 blocks from the outside. Wow. 13 kills hitting .435. Double wow! Career night for her. And she lead the team in points.

Thought the post-game headline was pretty funny:
"Flyers Throw Block Party Hosted by Kendyll Brown and Lauren Bruns"
Tough to defend this team when they're passing well. Gives Jane options and when she has time to set, she does it well.

Very funny headline but appropriate. Dayton really outblocked RI. Very nice win for the Flyers on the road. The RI Rams may be that second best team in the A-10. Rhode Island vs SLU should be very good. The outside hitting numbers were very impressive for the Flyers and the low number of errors is awesome. Dayton has it pretty easy now that this match is over. Dayton has done it job getting some good wins, now they just need to avoid bad losses and hope some of their decent wins look better by the end of the year. Let's hope teams like SLU, RI, Miami OH, and SIU keep winning.
