#1 vs #2 - X Thread
Big showdown match on Friday. UD is #1 in the conference and X is sitting at #2. But a closer look at the teams, and this match is a lot closer than just the conference records. Both X and UD have the exact conference schedule, meaning we have played the same teams to date. So here is a breakdown of the Conference-Only Stats:
Hitting %
#1 UD .303
#2 X .260
#2 Lindsay .446
#3 Becky .426
#4 Traut (X) .388
#5 Marten .361
#6 Voors (X) .353
#8 Matia (X) .336
Opponent H%
#1 UD .079
#2 X .160
Assists
#1 X 13.22
#2 UD 13.10
#1 Paszkiewicz (X) 11.74
#2 Yanz 11.25
Kills
#1 X 13.87
#2 UD 13.60
#2 Voors (X) 3.50
#6 Kray 2.94
#10 Campbell (X) 2.77
Blocks
#1 UD 3.22
#2 X 2.17
#1 Novacek 1.53
#2 Fletemier 1.38
#3 Matia (X) 1.30
#8 Marten 0.93
Aces
#2 X 1.52
#3 UD 1.45
#1 Morey 0.47 (WAY TO GO ALLY!!!!)
#5 Brown (X) 0.41
#6 Cowdrey 0.40
#8 Paszkiwicz (X) 0.39
#10 Kray 0.38
Digs
#3 UD 16.95
#4 X 16.77
#2 Vorherr (X) 5.61 (Last year's Libero of the Year and Rookie of the Year)
#4 Cowdrey 4.60
#7 Vargas 3.83
In the team stats above, the ones X leads, UD is close. In the ones UD leads there is more separation between the two teams. So stat-wise you give the edge to UD. But this match is in the Cintas Center, a place that has been tough to win in for UD. And, I would also expect the new coach to want to knock off Dayton like Deaton did last year.

I think it goes to five sets. The competitor in me always says you have no excuse to ever lose a home match. Its in your own dog house and you know every piece of the floor and have the crowd. Talent-wise however, the edge goes to us.
My guess is it comes down to a couple of critical points here or there.

Honestly, I think we sweep X. The stats are interesting and Cintas Center is always a factor, but this team jumped out 2-0 on SLU and then forgot to close it out in 3. I don't think they let that happen again. It's their only match this week. Girls have gotten a lot of rest at home, even traveling last weekend, they were home Saturday evening. 4 starters didn't play against LaSalle. We'll be all business and hungry to take it to X. I think 5 would be a mental setback and I just don't see that happening.
And, if X still runs a fast offense, we are better prepared to beat that kind of team than ever before. We beat UNI who is even faster than X. I think we are over than hurdle and it won't be the factor it's been in the past. We are a much quicker team blocking and in offensive transition which tends to neutralize another quick team.

The stats look great for Xavier but they haven't played a great schedule. I don't think they can stop our offense so if we can just slow them down it should be enough to win. I agree that our previous match against Northern Iowa should help us. I unfortunately have to get up in the middle of the night and won't be able to listen

If we look at the conference games we've played, X and UD have the identical schedule, because we're travelling partners.
@Duquesne : UD 3-0 (15, 16, 17), Xavier 3-2 (17-25, 17, 26-24, 20-25, 15-5)
@Saint Louis: UD 3-2 (17, 21, 20-25, 26-28, 15-9), Xavier 1-3 (21-25, 17, 17-25, 20-25)
vs Fordham: UD 3-0 (15, 15, 17), Xavier 3-0 (18, 13, 23)
vs Rhode Island: UD 3-0 (14, 15, 19), Xavier 3-1 (14, 22-25, 23, 21)
@ Temple: UD 3-0 (5, 9, 16), Xavier 3-1 (19, 16, 23-25, 16)
@ LaSalle: UD 3-0 (12, 16, 7), Xavier 3-0 (14, 12, 19)
We haven't lost, they've lost once.
We've lost 2 sets, they've lost 7 sets.
In our 2 lost sets, we averaged 23 points, versus 26.5.
In their 7 lost sets, they averaged 20 points, versus 25.
UD has held opponents for 10 or fewer set points 4 times (including 1 5th set)
X has held opponents for 10 or fewer set points 1 time. (a 5th set)
In our 17 non-fifth set victories, our opponents averaged 14.47 points.
In X's 15 non-fifth set victories, their opponents averaged 17.73 points.
Go Flyers!

Great stuff as always. Could you possibly calculate other stats such as hitting percentage and opponents hitting percentage against common opponents?

We can for X within the conference, because they have the exact schedule as UD (travel partners).
UD is hitting .303 in conference vs. X's .260.
UD is holding opponents to an almost unbeleivable hitting percent of .079. X is holding opponents to .160, which is also very good.
All the above player hitting percentages also apply against the same conference opponents, etc.
The "exception" is UD did not play 4 starters against LaSalle, and thus you would conclude some of our stats as a team and for those 4 players would probably be even better yet.

I had a feeling Xavier was gonna give us a REALLY tough game. That was closer than I expected. That was a lot closer than I would have liked. The A-10 Tourney will not be easy at all if we have to play Xavier.

Great job Lady Flyers! But the question needs to be asked: did X play especially better than usual because they were pumped up to play UD, or does X normally play that good? If so, why hasn't X been receiving votes in the polls? Did UD come out flat and just not play as well on X's home court?
Regardless, happy for a win but want to understand if we played above or below our "normal" game.

Coach said last year that he didn't know if either team could stop the other team's offense. Looking at the hitting stats it looks like both teams seriously affected the other team's offense
We outblocked them 24 to 4 though so they certainly didn't block our offense
We had 27 hitting errors next to 244 hitting attempts. Xavier had 42 hitting errors. This makes me think that the only reason xavier was even in the game is that they had a great night defensively digging the ball.

Xavier always plays us tough, especially at their joint. They have beaten us a few times down there. They always give us their best shot, which is why I knew it would be close. They were the only team to beat us last year.
All the close calls aside, this might be the second biggest win of the season. This was a HUGE win. We're already a game in hand against the top two foes in the league in SLU and XU and both were on the road. This was a huge win to put us in position to win the league and #1 seed. The UNI was the biggest win, but as far as meaning to the season, I put this one at #2. If we want a seed in the NCAAs, we need to win the regular season outright.

ASU beating USC should give us a small but important RPI bump.

#12 LSU losing to unranked Ole Miss should drop them in the AVCA poll. It's tough to drop 6 slots, but we've seen it this year. If it happens, we move up one. More than ever before, the number of teams that could make serious runs in the NCAAs is becoming a deep list.
People are asking, "Is this a down year for talent?" I don't think so. I think there are more and more clubs for young girls to get into volleyball. More athletic talent at a young age. There are certainly more 6'+ girls who grew up playing sports today than 20 years ago. And there are more talented coaches in the sport at the club, high school and college level to develop that talent.
Add Title IX to the equation and I think we're seeing the beginning of an emerging big-time college sport. Other than serving, and over-pass kill or a solo block, there aren't too many "plays" in volleyball that a single athlete can control or dominate. Basically every play requires three people (and really more when you consider the hitters that run their attacks, but don't get the set) to do things well for the offense to work. And it requires both the backrow defense to work as a team to cover the floor and the front row blockers to work as a team to put up the block. With the emergence of the sport and the development of better coaches and more/better athletes, there have become more teams that have a "group" of high-level talent vs only a few teams with the talent at all positions to win a national championship and a lot of teams with only one or two high-level players and average players at the other positions.
UD has to just keep working hard and I know they will. In the past we've had problems matching up with teams that run a 1 tempo offense (fast). This year we've faced UNI (who is as fast of team as you will ever see) and X (who is traditionally one of the fastest teams in the country) and beat both. In the NCAAs Hawaii is a fast team and they knocked out Illinois last year with their speed. Some people have also said we seem to have some problems with team that have big OHs. I'm not 100% convinced of that, but ILL, NE and MN all fit that mold and I do believe we are a better team today than earlier in the season when we played those teams. So I'd like to see a re-match with any of them. Time will tell. And hard work between then and now is what this team needs to continue. Nobody will out-work this team. It's the foundation of Flyer Volleyball.

I don't really think that it matters if this was the ugliest match we played all year, because the Dayton @ xavier match last year was quite possibly the ugliest match last year. The important thing is we won this won. We couldn't say that last year. The fact that we won shows improvement from last year. We all know its a tough place to play and I'm very satisfied with a win.
I'm also very satisfied with that Arizona State win over USC. That will definitely help our RPI and help our perception as a team when the NCAA committee scrutinizes over our schedule.

The Xavier match might have been the second worst performance last year but Wright State had to be number 1. I was there and it was ugly with a capital ug.

WSU was ugly. We schooled them in the first 2 sets then apparently we mentally got on the bus and headed back across town coming out of intermission and Set 3. Just glad we made the u-turn before we got beat.
