Flyers drop set one 25-21. Had 17-16 lead and a free point, but puked it with passing, then got aced twice. Down 19-17, never recovered.

Maybe the worst passing set of the entire season. Id say 60% of all sets were underhand sets behind the 10ft line. Couldnt put the ball anywhere. That we were even in this set and not blown out gives me optimism if we can start passing. Very poorly played. We gave this first frame away.

We can play much much better.

Nova takes set 1 21-25.

First -- shame on the NCAA and PSU. They have video wth no sound. So I pulled up OUR audio -- but it is a full point ahead of the video so impossible to have running at the same time. This is the NCAA tourney for crying out loud.

Couple things -- they are killing us with the short quick set to the middle for 3 rotations. It happens to be when Jane is in the front row -- but that might just be also the rotations their middle that likes this quick set is also in the front row.

Second is they are passing better than we are. We aren't passing bad -- we scored 21 points. But they are doing it a little better and we have to raise our passing game to compete.

Third -- we are getting block touches by I only saw 1 block -- and back to my first comment -- PSU also has no live stats that I have been able to pull up. We have a link on our website -- but it takes you to the video stream. PSU website has no link.

Villanova is serving well, I think they also had at least three aces. UD can win this match if they return serve better. They returned serve very poorly and only lost by four.

26-24 Flyers second set. Didnt think we played much better to be honest. I am in the minority in thinking we still need to pass a lot better. Nova dinking and digging us into problems. We are leaving a lot of fairly routine points off the scoreboard b/c we're not clean with the ball.

But 1-1 now, Im confident Horsmon will tighten things up during intermission. That was a HUGE set to eek out.

I don't think you are in the minority -- Nova is winning the passing game and the serve receive game. I missed most of the 2nd set when a neighbor stopped by -- but in the first we weren't terrible in my opinion -- but that means we need to raise that part of our game because they were way better. At this level both can play solid in an area -- and the team that raises a notch wins. We need to be that team. In the first it was Nova. It's why in the championship match most of the time you will see two exceptional teams and neither has a great hitting percentage for the match -- because they both are just really good blockers and defenders and digging attacks. The level of play just keep going up and it's a slug fest.

I agree that we can still pass better but I think Nova is a good serving team. Hopefully they continue to adjust. I thought that Nova's passing efficiency went way down that set. You cannot tell from a video if we served the ball better or if they just didn't perform as well.

UD takes 3rd 25-23. Finally found a stat link that worked. UD hitting .260. Nova .271. Nova has 8 blocks we have 5. This team should NOT be out-blocking us. The block is keeping them in this. We hit like .158 in the first set and over .300 int he 2nd and 3rd -- and yet they hung with us.

Another Nova block -- and Evan had the setter and 3 hitters at the sideline giving instructions. Good coaching move!!!

UD goes on a run -- up 12-11. TO Nova. When we get Jane to ball in the middle of the court between the 10 ft line and the net we do pretty well. Duh!

TO Nova -- their last. UD up 15-12. Margo had a service run the last run and now Jess is rolling off serves. She needs to shake off the TO and keep serving.

UD wins 25-23 to advance. Not our best showing -- but of course we wanted to save that for tomorrow night when we will need it.

Flyers eek it out. I didnt think we played well in the first two sets due do our sprayed passing, but thats why I said I thought being 1-1 had to make Horsmon probably feel pretty good. In a good enough spot to make the necessary adjustments and eek a result out. Down 2-0, we'd probably have been in serious trouble -- maybe too much to crawl out of.

We seem to just be a program that knows how to win close ones. Been that way for more than a decade. Still not sure we played up to our level, but Im willing to concede that Nova had something to do with that. They are our 2nd best win of the season outside WKU so they are not garbage by any means.

If you can win matches like these when you are struggling to find your groove, Im optimistic about the program. Usually programs outside the Power-5 feel like they have to play perfect to win in the NCAAs. We were anything but. But we advanced again. I think that says a lot about the mentality of the program and where we see ourselves in the national conversation.

Nova did well on a lot of digs and dinks. Probably one of the better dig teams Ive seen. I dont know the stats, but just going by the eye test, I thought they "tracked" the UD kills very well. Thats probably not the right term, but they just seemed on the correct lines many times to get directly under decent kill attempts.

I'll take a few more matches of just playing good enough to win. Of course as Beckystxa pointed out UD will need to play much better against PSU. There will be very few easy points in that match.

Except for the freshmen they know exactly the level of play that will be required. The good thing about tonight is that they have the chance to win and move on to the sweet sixteen

The other thing that I think made the slim difference in this match is experience. We go to the NCAA almost every year. Villanova had not been to the NCAAs since 1997 and I believe it was only their second appearance overall.

Never underestimate the yips and footsteps when you havent been there before.

We ran into that against OSU and UK in the 2nd rounds in the past. But tonight I think experience was a solid advantage for us, especially after losing set 1. We won all three of our sets by two points. Small details.

Dayton found a way to win, this and many other close matches. Yes, the sign of a mature team for sure.

We out-dug Nova big time 82-68. I think most people watching the match thought Nova passed better than we did, and I would agree. Those are not the same two things but they are related. And since the box scores don't give you the "passing" grade of each team, you can only go on observations watching the match on who was passing the best.

Also, Jane had 25 digs -- a career high. She did awesome in this area, but you don't want your setter to have 25 digs. The dig is the first touch of your 3. You want your setter taking the 2nd touch -- i.e. the set. Nova went after Jane with attacks to take her away from getting the set. And she held her own getting the dig, as well as everyone else who stepped up to set and the hitters making adjustments to find the floor after getting a lot of sets not from the comfort of their setter. FYI -- to put this in perspective -- you have to win the point to get credit for any digs made by your team during the rally for each point.

I think the fact the team handled Nova's game plan to attack Jane whenever they could, taking her off the set and the team making the adjustments to still get the kill was the difference in the match. Our Libero had 26 digs for the match. Jane had 25. It's unreal to be honest that Jane stepped up to this challenge. Very, very hard to do what she did last night.

I keep hearing that digs count only when you score, and I didn't pay attention to it while I was watching, but were most of Jane's "digs" straight to hitters for attacks? Because Jane had 57 assists, and the rest of the team as a whole only had 9 assists.

As well, overall we had 82 digs, but only 69 kills.

As Chris pointed out, we won our 3 sets by 2 points. Gave up 70 points. Most for the year in a game. Second is Western Kentucky where we gave up 67 points. (23, 19, 25) Then, after that were the last 2 Saint Louis games, where we gave up 62 points.

Alaina is 57 attempts from tying Krabacher for attempts in a career.

Erhahon has 126 block assists this year, tied for 9th on season all-time lists. And she is #16th all-time in block assists with 236. Just doubling that number to 472 puts her at #4th behind Barhorst, Fletmeier and Hannan. But, her first 2 years is already outpacing Hannan.

Kudos to Jane for excelling against a tough test! Without her digs they don't win this match

The rest of the team did a good job of setting when Jane was out of the play.

I will be surprised if PSU employs a similar strategy, I think they tend to simply overpower teams and not attack a single player.

In answer to Figgie's question: It is really rare that the setter can dig the ball and accurately set it, most of the time they are relying on other players to set it. But, if she had 25 digs and the team was hitting .250 only six of those digs would result in points if someone else set them. On some of those plays Jane was diving for short balls and it is unlikely that she got the ball up nice and high allowing someone else to set it.

Playing mixed doubles I have purposely returned the serve close to the net so my partner could spike it on the second ball. But, that was only because I was a weak back row hitter and she was a beast, LOL

Figgie -- this is where the numbers "don't add up" -- which is what I think you were looking at.

First stat complied line-- we serve and the other team sends the ball back over the net. We have a dig - a set - and a kill. Our player with the dig get credited for one dig, as does the player who set the assist (1 assist) and the player who makes the kill (1 kill and 1 attempt).

Second stat complied line -- we serve they send the ball back over the net. Janna digs, Jane sets, Alaina hits but the other team digs the ball and sets and attacks back to our side of the net. Jane gets the dig, Janna bump sets it to Alaina and she scores on the attack. All this stays in the stat system until one team scores -- which can be a rally even longer than this 2nd example. But in this case the system records the stats for this point as follows:

Janna - 1 dig
Jane - 1 dig
Alaina - 2 attempts
Alaina - 1 kill
Janna - 1 assist (since the score happened on her set - not Jane's)

So technically -- you can have a bunch of digs on one point scored if the rally is long. The team that wins the point gets their digs and their assist on the point scored. The other team gets nothing. Another reason I HATE losing long rallies. Our players scramble and fight like mad and if they lose the point they get no credit for it.

Hope this helps.
