Senior Justin Ringler was named a Preseason Second Team All-American by The Sporting News

Sept. 9, 2010
Allendale, Mich. - In the first poll of the 2010-11 basketball season, Grand Valley State was picked third in the country, according to The Sporting News in the publication's Preseason Top-10 Poll. GVSU, which finished the 2009-10 year with a 22-9 record and returns a dozen letterwinners, is one of three teams from the Midwest Region ranked in the poll, all of which are the top three teams listed.
Grand Valley State was chosen third and sits behind top-ranked Findlay and second-place Bellarmine. The Lakers defeated Findlay in the quarterfinals of last season's Midwest Regional Tournament, while both GVSU and Bellarmine advanced to the semifinals before ending their seasons.
Here is the complete list of The Sporting News 2010-11 Preseason Top-10 Poll:
1. Findlay
2. Bellarmine
3. Grand Valley State
4. Arkansas Tech
5. Cal Poly-Pomona
6. Indiana (PA)
7. Seattle Pacific
8. West Liberty State
9. Winona State
10. Bentley
The publication also offered its Preseason All-Americans, as Laker senior forward Justin Ringler was tabbed as a Second Team All-America selection. In 2009-10, Ringler started all 31 games and averaged 13.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, as he ranked fourth in the conference in rebounding, seventh in minutes (33.9 mpg.), 12th in assists (87), 13th in scoring, and 14th in steals (42). Ringler surpassed the 1,000-point mark last season on his way to being named to the All-GLIAC North Division First Team and a member of the GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team. Joining Ringler on the Preseason All-America Second Team is Jet Chang (BYU-Hawaii), LaMarshall Corbett (Angelo State), Chris Hall (Lynn), and Nick Wolf (Rollins). The All-America First Team consists of Chris Banchero (Seattle Pacific), Gage Daye (Bloomfield), Justin Keenan (Ferris State), Darryl Webb (Indiana PA), and Dauntae Williams (Central Oklahoma).

The Lakers begin the 2010-11 campaign with an exhibition game at Dayton, winners of the 2009-10 National Invitation Tournament (NIT), on November 2nd in Dayton, Ohio.

I feel sorry for Ringler and Brown for having to guard CW and CJ one on one. Can't double team them both.

Or play a zone?
Why wouldn't they play a zone? I think teams are still going to make us prove we can hit outside shots

It won't take a miracle to solve zones better than we have the last two seasons. With a few more respected shooters on board, and an outstanding penetrator in Juwan, the balance to our offense could/should improve dramatically.
Marry that to the likelyhood of us rebounding well and getting out and running ala NIT and we have the potential to bury the zone bug.

Agreed SDF, we are improved... at least on paper. But I still think we are going to see it until we beat it consistently.

Oh, I totally agree the A10 coaches are going to make us prove that we can beat the zone. This is our best chance in years to prove them wrong. We also have A10 coaches savvy enough to take away our stuff-- our offense against the man-to-man. Who can forget the weave? BG is going to have to make adjustments on the fly, and the players as well. But we have the guns to do it.

The video and audio are in sync on my computer.
The gap that was mentioned was when they had trouble with the whole feed and it cut out. When it came back on they video was behind but they got in synced back at the timeout.

Best offensive half I've seen by a UD point guard since Darnell Hoskins (assuming we don't count BRob as a true point).
He had some issues on the defensive end, but the last 5 seconds of the half was awesome to watch.

Apparently the production director for this game is the same one that does the football games. There is a fixation on end zone shots when the action is continuing. Can't they tell the viewer can't really see what is happening? Even on foul shots, a few times they focused on the shooter but failed to follow the ball to the hoop. I'm not making fun of their effort, but if these are, in fact, journalism/communications students, isn't there an instructor who guides them on how to get the best video shots?

observations from section 405:
very sloppy game....we have alot of work to do
staten is #1 pg by far, parker cant keep his feet under himself nor control the ball
all the frosh except for staten look completely lost...to be expected though? yes.
gvu is a scrappy team...give them credit for playing tenacious d
great ft and 3 pt shooting, good signs of stuff to come hopefully
lets hope searcy isnt hurt bv kav looks lost and very slow
back to the game here hopes for a more controlled flyers team in the 2nd

True, however, I have to imagine it's harder than it looks. Have you ever gone back to look at your senior project, the capstone? I'm betting that by your standards today it's total crap.
We are comparing them to CBS, ESPN, basically the best in the business.

That was not a very good shot by Parker. He has taken a couple ill advised ones.

And Benson gets stuffed and then throws a bad inbounds pass. Not a good sequence.

wow. We're getting a little sloppy and lazy with the ball. Not being aware of where the other team is on the court. Good to get these things out now.

I'd like to see Staten start shooting something besides layups. Beginning to remind me of LW.

Parker looks like he can be a little streaky, but having a quick PG that can hit 3s is refreshing.

Ralph Hill = jock on the floor defense. He must be tired, or he's never going to see the floor. I'll vote tired.

Well, I can say I saw some great things from everyone who played. I also had to cringe on something each one of these guys did. So, BG will definately have some things for everyone to work on.

Golden (I meant Grand. lol) Valley St is going to be pretty good in D2 and I think they have played well tonight after the initial 14-0 run. Thomas is lighting it up for them.

Interesting there is no Juwan in the game the last 5 minutes. Been Parker the whole way.

They probably practiced harder in the last 2 weeks than he's ever seen in his life, and probably practiced for an hour right before the game.

Yeah but no other starters either. No CW, CJ, LF, or PW. Its an exhibition so BG is letting the other guys finish it out.

CW and CJ didn't play last 5 minutes either...think it was more a function of being an exhibition game

Staten is our starting PG, no question. Parker is a solid solid player that will give us streaky points when we need it and is fully capable of handling the ball....but there is a big talent gap between Parker and Staten. Staten is just that good.
Sloppy at times but BG had lineups out there I never dreamed of at times. I know at one point Hill, Spearman, and Oliver were all out there together.

Just got back from the game. Staten is very quick but almost always under control-something we haven't had in a PG for some time. Parker is a big time shooter and pretty tenacious on D. Most improved player is kavs. Along with Searcy we will avg 8-12 points a game. Kavs is also very tenacious on the offensive end and really sees court well in making passes to open man-he had 8pts and 4rbs. Rest of freshman acquited themselves ok for first time out. Benson is great talent but makes alot of lazy passes-must have had 4 or 5 terrible lazy passes.

Staten is really good. He can kill off of the dribble and is very very fast in the open court. Good decisions and solid with control of the ball.
Parker is a nice secondary pg and can heat up from 3pt territory.
We looked weak at center. I would like to see what Searcy has to offer against Findlay.
Our defense is not on the same planet as last year. There is a lot of work to do there. Our rebounding is also lost in space at the moment. These will be key things to watch against Findlay.
Our whole team looked decent offensively. I think Fabrizius looks improved in most areas this year, but is still going to get beat defensively often.

I agree with that Fudd but I'm going to hold my thoughts on the D and rebounding until I see us play with a more standard lineup out on the court. But ya, tonight both looked terrible.

According to Gametracker Staten played 23, Parker 21. IIRC, at least one was on the floor at all times, so that means they were together on the floor together for only ~2 minutes.

I would too. I'd pay to get just a decent picture and sound that matched. What is wrong? Is our basketball streaming going to be just as bad as our football streaming has been this year?
Wake up, UD. You have loyal fans out here that you are abusing and taking for granted.

We always complain about the video streaming for the first game or 2 (it's almost as frequent as the "why aren't the students coming to the exhibition game" freak-outs) and it inevitably gets worked out when the season rolls around. Other than a few technical issues during the season, I think the video streaming is overall pretty solid.

At the game tonight. UD played fine for the first game against a scrappy team who could shoot. Many new players and BG gave the young ones a lot of PT. Players were winded a couple of times as the refs did a good job letting them play. Solid core, good spot players, nice that everyone can contribute. Looking forward to Sat vs F. Show up if you are in the area, there were plenty of good seats to move into.

I can tell you little has improved all season long in football. The video is still running behind the on-field action....the camera often remains focused on a vacant portion of the field when the action has long since moved on......and the feed still freezes up every few minutes.
If this is what you want to watch all winter long during basketball season, then just don't say anything. Make whoever is responsible for the streaming think they are doing a great job and that you are happy with what's being sent out.
I, on the other hand, will not accept crap. If it takes a pay system to get decent streaming, then so be it. I will pay for a picture that does not freeze, that is focused and in real-time with the action on the field/floor, and that is in sync with the audio. Other schools have pay options, and if that's what it will take to get a decent stream from the arena to my PC, then so be it.

I don't watch the football games streaming. But from watching online the past few years, my experience has been that it works pretty well and gets better after the first couple of exhibition games.

So then we can look at combined stats for the two at point guard and come away pretty happy:
8/16 from field= 50%
4/8 from 3pt= 50%
6/6 from ft line.
6 rebounds
26 points
6 assist/ 2 turnovers= A/T ratio of 3.0
2 steals
That is an incredible stat line at point.

I think that the game was pretty much what everyone expected at this point with young guys.
Everyone had to be pleasantly surprised with JS and JP. JS was under control, made good shots, and most importantly, created open looks for the perimeter. His assists would have been much better had Luke been able to hit the side of a barn
JS should be the starter at this point. This isn't taking anything away from JP, because he played well too. However, JP took, and made, two threes on breaks, that weren't good decisions. Yes, the shots were made, but any coaching staff isn't happy when a guy pops off a perimeter shot on the break with his rebounders behind him. Not a big deal, but the JS decision making seals the deal for me.
You got the expected out of CW and CJ. Nothing to worry about. Both did a good job from the perimeter.
With DS hurt, we don't know our exact situation in the middle. MK played good minutes. He worked hard in the off season with the weights...It will pay off. We weren't exceptionally tough inside, which must change with MK being the widest body in the middle.
We didn't rebound all that well and our team defense was sloppy at times. Team defense against foreign opponents comes with time, especially with new guys. I think we will be solid, but the main unknown will be guys off the bench at the 4-5. If this game counted, our horses would have had these guys by 20+.

I haven't seen too many comments on this since most everyone focused on the new guys, but did anyone else think CW looked really improved? He hit a couple of mid range jumpers, seemed to have much better on the ball defense, and made a great decision on a breakaway when I thought he was going to plow over the guy as usual, but instead made a spin move and then backed it out.
Other comments:
Staten's early split of the double team to get into the lane and hit CW was a thing of beauty.
Ralph can be a nice zone buster from the elbows with the way he hit that shot yesterday.

I've been afraid to compliment CW on his shooting because I keep thinking it might be a fluke that he is hitting the jumpers and 3 pointers. But he did well in the R+B game and hit a lot of them in the GVS game too. I'm on the verge of proclaiming that he has improved his shot.

If you go back and watch the NIT games, plus this exh game...CW has clearly developed a jump shot. And a fairly nice turn around one at that also.
