Per Hawkamaniac of the A10 board:
http://www.basketballforum.com/atlan...-2011-a-3.html
For the Hawks:
Losses:
Garrett Williamson (graduation)
Darrin Govens (graduation)
C.J. Brown (graduation)
Temi Adebayo (transfer to Philadelphia U)
A.J. Rogers (transfer to Norfolk State)
Chris Prescott (transfer to St. Peter's)
Mike Auriemma (transfer to Assumption College)
Bryant Irwin? (was supposedly transfering to Akron but now there's some scuttlebutt that he may stay)
Newcomers:
Darius Quarles, SF
Langston Galloway, SG
Patrick Swilling, Jr., SG/SF
Ron Roberts, PF
Halil Kanecevic, C (transfer from Hofstra, will sit out '10-'11)
C.J. Aiken, C? (holding our breath once again that our center recruit qualifies)
If Irwin leaves, expect them to hold on the scholarship for the next cycle after recent last-minute signees Adebayo and Charoy Bentley bombed. Having said that, Williamson was also a last-minute signee and he paid off big time, so don't be surprised if they try throw some mud on the wall and hope it sticks again.
Rotation:
PG: Justin Crosgile, Carl Jones, and a few for Bentley
SG: Jones, Galloway, Swilling
SF: Quarles, Swilling, Irwin?
C: Todd O'Brien, Aiken?, Carl Baptiste?
PF: Idris Hilliard, Baptiste, Roberts
Overview in a small nutshell:
After three-plus seasons of decline that bottomed out this past season, the program would appear to be on the upswing with an impressive influx of new talent. However, it is young talent and there will be growing pains. But, this Hawk team will definitely be more fun to watch. I'll be optimistic and say lower middle of the A10 pack and a slightly winning record.

Per WH on the A10 board:
http://www.basketballforum.com/atlan...t-josephs.html
ST. JOSEPH'S
The key to the Hawks' success is to get lots of production from the program's most talented crop of newcomers in years; shoot better from outside (30%, 12th in the A-10); get more inside scoring; hit the boards harder (a whopping -8.0 margin, worst in the league); and improve in every area defensively (45% FG defense, 12th in the A-10).
In short, do everything better.
The Hawks are one of the youngest teams in the league, but the good news is that Phil Martelli appears to have sharply improved the talent level. SJU fell short in so many areas last season mainly because of a overall lack of talent. That won't be the case this year, but expect lot of growing pains for the youngsters. The A-10 is much better top to bottom than it was just a few years ago. No longer can Martelli take a team with mediocre talent and coax a winning league record out of it.
Keep an eye out for combo forward Ron Roberts, though skinny big forward C.J. Aiken could be the next big star after he gains some weight. There's also lots of buzz around wing guard Langston Galloway.
SJU has a ridiculously tough schedule for such a young team, but if the newcomers are as good as their reputations, the Hawks will get much better in January and February, pull off some big upsets and look like a team to be reckoned with for the following season. Assuming, of course, that Phil Martelli has only lost his hair and not his mojo.
NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE
W - WESTERN KENTUCKY
L - At Penn State
W - NORFOLK STATE
L - At Fairfield
W - Rutgers (Palestra)
W - At Drexel
L - At Villanova
L - At Princeton
L - MINNESOTA
L - At Creighton
W - At Boston University
W - At Holy Cross
W - SIENA
W - PENN (Palestra)
NONCONFERENCE RECORD: 8-6
This is a surprsingly tough slate for such a young team coming off a tough season. St. Joe's opens with a hard game vs. Western Kentucky, but the Hilltoppers have suffered heavy graduation losses the past two years and have lots of new faces. They will probably win 20 games, but the Hawks catch them early.
Playing at Penn State is a tough one, too. Nittany Lions fell apart last year and lost 20 games, but Penn State is deep and experienced. I expect them to bounce back this year, starting with a win over SJU. Norfolk State is decent enough but the Hawks should prevail.
Fairfield has perhaps the best player in the MAAC in Derek Needham and the Stags are favored to win their conference. The program has been on the upswing and won 20 games last season. I expect them to beat the young Hawks. Rutgers has a fine new coach in Mike Rice, a former assistant to Martelli, but the roster is depleted. SJU should win.
Drexel plays excellent defense, but Bruiser Flint's team lacks the offensive firepower to beat the Hawks. SJU needs to beat Drexel because the next four games are daunting.
Nova is a top 10 program. Princeton has a lot of experience, discipline and shooting ability. Both teams should prevail at home over the Hawks.
A veteran Minnesota team is too big and physical for the yougish Hawks. And while Creighton lost Dana Altman, new coach Greg McDermott has big success at Northern Iowa. Altman also left him a darn good roster, including Rutgers transfer Greg Echenique.
Road games at BU and Holy Cross arent a walk in the park, but both teams are somewhat down. BU lost a trio of top seniors, though the Terriers are good enough to beat the Hawks if SJU doesnt give a good effort. The Cross fell apart last year after coach Ralph Williard left and they already fired his orginal replacement.
These are must games for the Hawks after a killer stretch.
SJU finishes at home with Siena - minus coach Fran McCaffery and three key players from last year. The Saints are certain to be good again, but much more beatable than they were the last two years. And Penn still hasn't recovered from losing Fran Dunphy. SJU is simply better at every spot on the floor.
BONUS A-10 PREDICTION: 5-11 (13-17 overall)
The Hawks pair up with Massachusetts, Richmond and Temple (dropping St. Bonaventure). SJU went 0-5 vs. that trio last season. This is a tough group and I could see the Hawks going 2-4.
SJU also goes on the road at Fordham, LaSalle, St. Louis, Dayton and Charlotte. Hard to see the Hawks winning more than two, and one is more likely.

Bad choice by PW there....CW open on the break and PW gets a call on the floor instead, not even shooting. Bad.

Giving up too many offensive rebounds. Last possesion Juwan chased the ball instead of boxing out. They end up with an off. board and a foul. That's grade school stuff.

Yeah, we've lost site of our M.O. Lots of rushed shots. Not playing a complete possession on defense. And not showing effort on the boards. Gotta get them back on track in this T.O. We've stopped the entry passes into the post and the kickouts. We started to fall in love with making threes. Zone is once again hurting us.
You don't want to give a young team confidence on the road. They seem to have a LOT of ultra quick guards. We've gotten burned on several little shake and bakes on the perimeter.

Matt has terrible hands. It seems like he is constantly getting the ball stripped or fumbles it himself. Does he have small hands for a big man or just weak hands. Maybe just careless.

So frustrating watching us play against the zone. It's as if we don't want to take a 2 point shot. We pass up open ten and 12 foot shots constantly.
Why not put CJ in the middle of the zone so he can drive, shoot and rebound instead of hanging around the perimeter waiting to chuck a three?

To me, looking at our team and what kind of defenses we're facing, i think we have to recognize that CJ, PW, and Staten are our best mid range guys. All of them can hit a pull up jumper. But all we're doing is having PW and CJ hang around the three, and Staten is driving with the sole purpose of kicking it out to them. None of them right now are showing much interest in either taking it to the rack or pulling up for a mid range shot.
We need PW and CJ to either drive to or fill the gaps in the middle of that zone and hit some shots. And Staten needs to attack more. The rest of the guys need to rebound like crazy. We're not getting good effort on the boards from our bigs or our wings (aside from CW).
We are getting outrebounded by 9 by st. joe's, and we only have ONE offensive board for the game. That shows a lack of desire to me.
Positives:
Lots of assists, low turnovers

How stupid was it to throw a full court pass when there was a risk that no one woulld touch the ball and SJU would can get it back under their own hoop without time expiring. As soon as the ball was thrown, I yelled not to do it. Gregory has good suits and hasn't lost any hair, but he is no MENSA candidate. Surely there is a smarter coach we could have hired. We're stuck with him for years.

I recall the last couple of years that BG always had a "Zone" play that we would unleash once a game where there's a double pick for CW down low that resulted in a dunk after a ball reversal. I don't feel like we've seen that much this year.
We're not setting picks against the zone and using the ball reversal for the purpose of penetration and getting to the rim. Too much standing around on the perimeter. Again.

3-3 so far this half. Only one of our shots was a good one though. But i'll take it so far. They are pounding us on the inside. We have no defense in the post.
Fail to block out on a freethrow. Unbelievable.

On that possession that benson hit the fadeaway vs. the zone, not one flyer went to the freethrow line for the entire possession against a zone. How is that possible? Is there a red hot lava monster in there or something?

CW looks like he's getting ****ed and getting agressive, but he's got to be careful not to just think he can do this 1 on 5. He got bailed out with that foul call. Almost a TO.
Please god no more threes for a while.

Hello Sports Fan
At this point in time we have played three bottom feeders of the A 10 and in each contest we have struggled. Not a good omen.

Wow, we had a shooter actually set a screen for a shooter on a pick and roll. That doesn't happen very often. PW with the bucket.
We're not crashing the boards enough. We only have one guy every possession looking for the rebound on the offensive side. Let's go.

What game is Hartsock watching. "Paul Williams for three" when he is two feet inside the women's arc. "That foul is on Luke Fabrizius". Really? They called it on Paul Williams. Geez, they look so much alike.

Still don't know what to do against a zone. Just another three. At least we rebounded though. CJ needs to keep mixing it up in there.

One thing that i really miss about KH is that he used to seal his man and open up some driving lanes so our guys could finish. None of our current big men do that effectively.

Does this only happen to UD?
We've essentially won 3 games in the last 3 years because of this same thing. Incredible.

Really? They just got a technical for 6 guys on the court. You would be all over BG for that as a fireable offense.

I can't think of any other time I've seen a team have six players on the floor except against Dayton. It is amazing that it happens so often.

If BG is responsible for for players throwing inbounds plays out of bounds and letting secured rebounds slip out of their hands with no one even trying to knock it loose, should't Martelli be held responsible for his asst coaches blunders?
I guarantee you there are people on the St Joe's forum that think he is responsible.

There is a similarity between sports and the stock market: Both involve and reward expectations. We should have blown St Joe's out at the UD Arena. This is not a satisfying win, although it is a conference win.

Agreed! When the market/season is looking up everybody is on cloud nine and CEO's or coaches are all geniuses. When the season/market turns south, there is widespread panic. People jumping out of windows, making crazy statements, and poor decisions. The bad investors change their plan to what is popular in the moment and forget what their plan was. The smart investor stays the course and follows the plan. They make rationale changes based on sound advice from seasoned professionals not rumors or advice from a messageboard.
Just saying!

A win is a win but.............
I'm sorry, I just see no chance against X, the hunchback may score 20+.
Can MK palm the ball, his hands are tiny for a 6'10 man.
