UD vs La Salle, 17 Tournament Edition

A week to prepare for this one. Flyers are at their high right now after winning two must win games in commanding fashion (8 Goals to 2, with the two opponent goals being after UD was already ahead 3-0). The wins were against losing teams outside of the A10 tourney field, but those teams were also vying for a playoff spot as were the Flyers. Elimination games - Sunday on the road no less - are the best type of tune ups for the playoffs because Dayton has already experienced (and overcome) that must-win sensation that makes or breaks teams. Let's hope for a better rematch, Saturday!

Bring your own food! La Salle does not offer much in the way of lunch, snacks, or other fan amenities. I think they have a little grab and go coffee open nearby, and that's about it. It's a huge disappointment whenever I go there.

Defense... Most teams would have surrendered a corner. What do we do, hit the post... Almost an own goal! Maci Bower cleans up the rebound and it is 1-0 early in the third minute.

Nothing could be worse than the OT game at Dayton (2014?) getting cut off at 90'. Speaking of cut off.

Is there commentating?

Are they saying anything about the Johns collision?

She just got up after a long wait.Emily Jones going in.and she gives up the goal in about thirteen seconds... Literally

This is the third straight 2-0 half in the series. For those who are complaining/commentating on the "turf" situation, I am sad to say that we should abandon our 2014 title win now... The one in which La Salle was the better seed but had to travel to Dayton.

Other than the poor start and quick goal, and a quick goal off a cold gk the flyers stayed with them, except last 3 min or so as we just seemed to kick the ball in any direction, no purpose

There goes the season unassisted goal, beat the defender and goalie unimpeded.

At least UD scored.

3-2 La Salle final. Battled at times but also got out-muscled. Just not enough skills at not enough positions. Too many aimless passes just killed us offensively and led to loss of possession that gave up goals.

I thought Dayton showed some true grit in the second half and put a scare in the other side with that 85th minute counter... but Salle is world's better and deeper. Props to coach and the ladies for just a fine season and a much improved showing since five weeks ago.

My question is why is the cupboard bare as Chris pointed out. A veteran coach of 25 years should have kept the cupboard staked.

Exclamation

Well here's my season-ending brain dump after the 3-2 loss.

First of all I thought we played hard today and it was one of our better elbow grease games of the season. We had better stats and could have scored a cpl more goals. But we were also less talented and that also showed itself when it mattered. On Fieldturf, this is about as effective as I think we could realistically play.

The league picked UD 1st in the preseason, I picked them 7th. They finished 8th and lost to the #1 seed on the road in the A10 opening round.

All things considered, this team more or less maxed out their ability and potential. I had a few gripes about not being willing to shake the lineup up a bit, or using playing time as a motivator, but overall I believe Golz basically took this team as far as any reasonable first year head coach could take it. The performance today was about UD's ceiling -- even when playing to their best, they were still fighting the basic fundamentals of soccer and despite winning the stat sheet against a good team, those fundamental shortcomings led to three goals that should be avoidable on a Top-3 team in the league and it cost them the result.

Too many players being asked to do things above their pay grade at the level UD would require in order to finish in the Top-3 in the A10 this year. Compounding the problem was a freshmen class that contributed nearly nothing of any value on the field despite players ahead of them on the depth chart begging for a demotion. So you had a lot of veterans with skills deficiencies not being forced to fight for their playing time by young hungry players capable of pushing them. UD's most heralded recruit, a HS All-American, played the equivalent of 2 games this year.

To put it in perspective, the entire freshmen class played 474 total minutes this year. That's about 5 games of playing time in a 20 game season spread over a half dozen players. Its not like they were trying to steal minutes from Ashley Campbell, Nicole Waters, Colleen Williams, Libby Leedom, and Erin O'Malley either. In 20 years Ive never seen an incoming class be asked to do so little -- nevermind in a season where the bar had never been lower to earn PT and see the field as a first-year player.

Alexis Kiehl, Nadia Pestell, and to some extent GK Kaelyn Johns were really the consistent upper level A10 difference makers. Micayla Livingston had her moments -- and others had moments. But for too many those moments were few and far between.

It wasnt a defensive problem or offensive problem -- it was a talent problem across every skill set you need to have to be a contending team. Eighth place teams tend to be less athletic, lack speed, struggle with basic trapping, have narrow vision, kick without purpose, defend with poor angles, lack foot strength, lack upper body strength, have lesser work rates, and tend to commit unforced errors.

We were woeful in the midfield most of the season and I said before the season opener this would probably make or break us. There was never any continuity there to transition us from defense to offense and the ball distribution was -- in a word -- abysmal. At least too often it was. In basketball jargon, our point guards threw too many passes in the stands.

Its not any one thing. We need a collective improvement in all facets and that really comes down to recruiting because even Anson Dorrance cannot teach half of what I just listed to most players -- its at the DNA level and you either have the seeds that grow with water or you dont. Xs and Os are only going to get us so far -- about 8th place in the A10 in any season. To narrow the gap and return to the top of the A10 where we are most comfortable, we're probably a good 2-3 recruiting seasons from that opportunity. Its going to take some time to perform the purge and replenish with difference makers.

The upperclassmen will still steer the ship over the next cpl years. Unfortunately there's not a ton there to work with. We lose Alexis Kiehl who finished 5th all-time in career goals. If you think scoring was difficult this season, wait 8 months. Players like Mink and Morrissey and Livingston and Robertson will have to do things not previously seen. When your second most dangerous attacking player with the ball at her feet is left fullback Nadia Pestell, you have shortcomings. MicLiv did get better late in the year after a slow start.

Its kind of a Jimmys and Joes issue -- but in this case Janes and Jills. If I thought our shortcomings were simply scheme or inexperience or bad luck or injuries I would say so. On occasion that may have been the case. Not having Weigel all season hurt. But I dont think it would have made us a different team either.

The bottom line is Dayton may have to take another step back next year (and the year after) in order to take a step forward. Too early for any concrete 2018 predictions, but its safe to say qualifying for the A10 Tournament will once again be a tall order -- maybe more of a challenge than even this season because there is no All A10 game-changer on offense like Kiehl to create a piece of individual brilliance and save our bacon. A kind of player every opponent in this league respects and gives an extra half-step cushion to.

Golz definitely gets a passing grade from me in year one. He was taking a knife to a gun fight on too many game nights. He probably squeezed as many wins out of them (9) as I thought were realistically on the schedule. We beat Geo. Mason who thoroughly outplayed us. We tied VCU on the road who thoroughly outplayed us. We tied SLU on the road who was a superior team. Perhaps there was a result somewhere we gave away, but overall we were probably fortunate to even finish 9-9-2 based simply on the eye test and run-of-play.

Next season will be hard to judge Golz on as well. He needs 2-3 full recruiting cycles to see what kind of talent he can bring in and mold to his liking. If he can bring in the studs we were used to for so long, I have no real issue with the growing pains getting there. But fans need to understand that there is no offseason fix. Its going to take some time. If you dont have the patience for it, look away now.

Im going to miss Alexis. She arrived at UD as anything but a finished product but turned herself into a fine attacking player. She had her own limitations -- size being one of them. But she maxed out much of her upside over four seasons and despite no longer having Waters and Campbell and Libby feeding her quality service, she grinded it out this year and did the best with what she had to work with in her senior year. In a lot of ways she was too unselfish at times but good players are often like that.

Griesinger played injured nearly her entire career. She sucked it up, but those injuries took a toll and limited her ability to reach her own ceiling. I had a difficult time grading her out every game b/c she was compensating for so much.
