"FTS" Greatest Hits, Volume III

WEST BLOOMFIELD (MI) -- Continuing in our series of summer reruns, “FTS” now takes a look back at the Detroit area HS players that I have seen play over the past 10+ years. Some of them ended up as Flyers; some went elsewhere and two in particular -- LaDontae Henton and Percy Gibson -- signed but unfortunately never enrolled. Here we go!

Title: Next Year Starts Right Now
Subject: Devin Searcy

I was able to unearth this one from the archives of the old UD Pride website. Unfortunately, my earlier column about watching Devin play has disappeared into the ether. Manny Harris who ended up at U of M was Michigan Mr. Basketball that year and turned out to be an excellent player.

Devin played in the Michigan HS All Star game that featured some talented players like the aforementioned Manny Harris and MSU signees Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers.

Subject: Paul Williams

The following season I had the chance to once again see an actual UD signee play -- Paul Williams at Renaissance HS. PW was a great player on a very good team and was a finalist for Michigan Mr. Basketball. That award went to X commit Brad Redford. A review of their encounter at the MI HS All Star Game can be found here: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5202

Title: What Do We Know About?
Subject: Isaiah Sykes
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8088

Sykes was a big PG on a very good Detroit Finney HS team. He was being pursued by UD, Tennessee, U of M and MSU. I liked what I saw so I went back 4 days later to see him play again.

Title: Chapter 2 of What Do We Know?
Subject: Isaiah Sykes
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8177

Sykes and Finney met their match vs. a Detroit Pershing squad that featured future MSU Spartans Keith Appling and Derrick Nix as well as Juwan Howard, Jr. Isaiah ended up having a successful career at UCF and is currently hooping overseas.

Title: What Do We Know About?
Subject: Matt Kamieniecki
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8986

Matt ended up signing with Ball State and was a bench player for them over his 5 years there, including a redshirt season. He was on BG’s recruiting radar screen but was probably a backup target at best for UD.

Title: What Do We Know About?
Subject: Roy Marble, Jr. and Kyle Vinales
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9117

Two more Detroit area guys who were probably never going to matriculate at Dayton: Marble because he was a “legacy” at Iowa (and had a great career there) and Vinales due to grades. Devyn (Marble’s real first name as I had discovered) spent 2 years in the NBA with Orlando.

Subject: Percy Gibson

I had the misfortune to catch one of Gibson’s worst HS games as he was recovering from a bout of the flu. However, anytime you can drive a mile down the road from your house to see a UD signee play and hang out with Tom Izzo on the sidelines is a good day.

Title: In Search Of…
Subject: LaDontae Henton
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17328

“Buckets” as he was nicknamed had himself a career game with 21 points in the 1st quarter of this tilt vs. Denzell Valentine and Lansing Sexton. The thing a lot of people forget about Henton is that he was 1st Team All State in Michigan for four years—how many guys can say that?

Title: Mr. Gibson Goes to Lansing
Subject: Percy Gibson
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17728

Percy Gibson and his Detroit Southeastern Jungaleer teammates punched their ticket to the MS HS Final Four in Lansing with this victory over Romulus HS. This tilt took place right after Juwan Staten left UD and before BG split. It was also prior to the infamous meeting between Percy, his mom and Archie took place at a Dunkin’ Donuts, a site that Percy told me was of her choosing, as I discovered below.

Subject: LaDontae Henton and Percy Gibson

This was depressing. Talking to two guys who were signed, sealed and delivered to the Flyers and then poof, they were gone. The only good thing to come out of this was I got to meet Kevin Kuwik for the first time.

Subject: Darrell Davis
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24339

My first chance to see “Baby D” (as he told me he liked to be called) was an inauspicious one as he had an off game. He was much better the second time I caught him in action.

Subject: Darrell Davis

Darrell looked more like himself this game. His Detroit Douglass Academy Hurricanes ended up making it all the way to the Final Four in Lansing in Darrell’s senior year.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
