Brian Roberts 14-15 Season w/ Hornets
Figured Roberts needed his own thread for this season with the Hornets.
Here is a 7+ minute interview with him from the Hornet's media day yesterday…

Awesome. if he can play 15-20 minutes a game, he can do something with this opportunity to dish, stop and pop, and play solid team ball.
i'm assuming he's not starting.

Thank you for posting. Brian looks great. He looks really fit and happy. Brian looks like a real athlete compared to the way Raymond Felton looks with the Mavericks. Raymond Felton who got traded from New York and came in hefty, shall we say.
Honestly, though this is not a professional nor creative interview. They ask Brian how he feels. A layup homer interview.

An aside . . .
We picked up a hitchhiker last week in County Donegal, Ireland. Willie, from Aukland, New Zealand, was on the road to Slieve League to do some hiking. He and my son got to talking NBA basketball, and Willie asked if any Dayton players were in the league. When he heard Brian Roberts he said 'I've got Brian Roberts on my fantasy team!'
So there you go - Brian Roberts is world renowned.

Training camp update on Roberts from the Hornets radio play-by-play guy…
http://www.nba.com/hornets/lauer-sou...-filled-talent
"Roberts to me was an excellent and underrated addition; he started 42 games last year in New Orleans, and led the NBA in free-throw percentage (94 percent)! He’s an outstanding shooter, drilling 37 percent from beyond the arc in his career."
Looks like Roberts will start the season as the primary backup point guard behind Kemba Walker.

Hope he does heats up soon, because the focus of the game story was how well the 3rd PG, Jannero Pargo, played (16 4Q points). The coach specifically mentions that he was going to go with Roberts in the 4Q but Pargo was playing so well that he left Pargo in. Hopefully Roberts starts shooting better and doesn't start loosing minutes to Pargo.

Hornets starting PG Kemba Walker did not play due to a foot injury so Roberts started tonight.
He played 41+ minutes and had 19 pts (7-14FG, 3-5 3P, 2-2FT), 5 assists in the 88-79 loss to the Pacers.

Great news Brian put up such nice numbers.
Went back last week to look at all his preseason games. Pretty sure there is one game Brian put up 14 points in about 20 minutes of play about 10 days ago. Perhaps someone can confirm.

NBA League Pass is free through Nov. 4th.
For those with DirecTV, Roberts and Hornets are on Ch 751 tonight against the Bucks.
Also, CJ gets the start tonight for the Sixers. They are on Ch 753 versus the Pacers.

This is true. It has some to do with injuries for the Hornets to backup SGs and it has some to do with Coach Clifford being frustrated with starting SG Lance Stephenson so he has not played him in the 4th quarter of the last two games.
Here is a quote from Charlotte Observer article on last night's game:
“I’m going to play the guys I’m comfortable with,” Clifford said after the game. “When he (Stephenson) went out there (at halftime) I wasn’t planning on not playing him. Brian Roberts was our best player tonight – him playing at the (point) and the (shooting guard). That’s the way it is.”

I read he hit his first 6 shots in a row. The coach was quoted as saying he has the talent to become a star. He is already a star in our opinion!
Only weird thing, I looked at his stats for this year and he had made 23 of 23 freethrows going into the last game (!) and then went 1-4 in that game (??) I don't think he ever missed 3 ft's in one game, ever. He made 3 out of 4 3 pointers and missed 3 out of 4 ft's. Weird.

At UD, he missed 3 ft's twice in his career.
Dec 3, 2005 in a win versus Grambling, he went 4-8.
Dec 22, 2005 in a loss to Cincinnati, he went 5-8.
(UD's record in parenthesis)
76 games when he missed 0 FTs. (46-30)
36 games when he missed 1 FT. (22-14)
11 games when he missed 2 FTs. (5-6)
1 and 1 game for 3 and 4 FTs, respectively, listed above. (0-1/1-0, respectively)

Front page of today's Charlotte Observer sports section...
Brian Roberts fitting in to Hornets’ mix:
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/201...o-hornets.html
“It’s getting there. I’m feeling pretty good out there on the floor, getting to play with these guys and know their strengths, and they get to know my strengths, too,” Roberts said.
“I think that’s going to translate to help this team get some wins. Individually, it’s OK, but we’re trying to get some wins.”

Brian has 14 at the half tonight against my Warriors. He is 5 for 5, and 2 for 2 ft's. Getting a lot of good comments on the air. He looks very quick and confident.
He is out-Currying Steph Curry who is only 3 for 7.
Great first half!

This is IMPRESSIVE. If Brob can string together another 8 to 10 solid scoring ganes, he will clearly push another guard out if playing minutes....
And Coach is in his corner. After poor start this is getting GOOD.

LONG Grantland piece about what's wrong with the Hornets.
Here's a hint, it's Lance Stephenson. BRob only merits a small mention as a backup point guard who can't defend.

He did not say Brian cannot defend. He said when Brian plays with the other point guard that they are at a height deficit. That is no reflection on Brian. He also mentioned Brian needs to play the screens better.

What little time I spend studying NBA teams always concludes with the impression that some franchises are always going to suck in the long run. The Hornets are near the top of the list. They just can't seem to get over the hump. These kinds of teams always seem to have some nice trade pieces, but nothing that will gel into a winner. I wish Brob was still a Pelican.
Maybe I'm biased now just seeing two Cincinnati thugs on the Hornet's roster.

Stephenson was a problem before finding success on the Pacers. I get feeling , like Marbury, he will jump to highest payer - all else be ****ed.
Still time to see if he can fit in with AL Jeff, Uconn guard (I'm drawing blanks) and rest of team.

I don't know if that's fair re Marbury. He has certainly passed on plenty of $$$$ by signing the shoe deal he has/had.

Tough outing ... but
The bad: Shot just 2-for-12 from the field.
The good: Played game-high 40 minutes with just one TO in an overtime win. Had 6 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds.

He started 0-5, then hit two in a row in the second quarter, and promptly went 0-5 in the second half. Of course it was typical NBA crap with the winning Charlotte team shooting 30%.

Tweet from Hornet's beat writer:
@rick_bonnell: Kemba Walker having knee surgery Wednesday in New York.
Unless the Hornets make a significant roster move, Roberts will be the starter at PG for the next 6-8 weeks.
Edit: Adrian Wojnarowski reports Hornets are looking at making trade for Ramon Sessions or Norris Cole.

Charlotte Hornets’ Brian Roberts says he’s ready should Kemba Walker miss significant time
From today's Charlotte Observer:
Charlotte Hornets’ Brian Roberts says he’s ready should Kemba Walker miss significant time:
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/201...l#.VMeabWR4o_M
Excerpt from the article:
What does he do well?
“Organize and score,” Clifford said. “We play with a purpose when he’s in there. And with the pick-and-roll and the catch-and-shoot, he puts pressure on the defense.”
Roberts agreed on those being his strengths.
“I’ve always played smart basketball, that’s what I’ve relied on,” he said. “Being older and with my IQ, I make the right play and the right reads.”

Roberts with a team high 18pts as Charlotte beats Washington 92-88.
More impressive is that Charlotte is now 5-1 since Kemba Walker got hurt and Roberts has been starting at the point. The schedule during that stretch has been favorable, but considering the Hornets were 16-26 before Kemba's injury, Roberts has done a nice job running the team while filling in for Walker.

Hornets win again, beating Washington 94-87. Roberts starts again and finishes with 12 pts, 5 assists, and 0 turnovers in 38 minutes of action.
He also had a brutal crossover/pull-up jumper on John Wall with under 2 minutes to go that gave the Hornets a 7pt lead and basically sealed the win. See the video at the link below and go to about 2:20 to see the shot.

He also had a brutal first half...0/6 fg, 0/5 3pt fgs. But like all pure shooters, he kept shooting.

Talk about brutal . . . he was face down on the court at the end of the half after running into a vicious, but legal, pick.

That was Blair's revenge against BRob for putting up 31 pts and leading the way in the beat down the Flyers gave Pitt in 2007.

Dejuan Blair was probably just trying to get revenge for getting his @$$ kicked at UD Arena by BRob and the Flyers.
That was a dirty play. Hornets got the last laugh with the win, punctuated by BRob's step back jumper.

As much as I love his game and his work ethic, any club needs 2/3 good point guards. Don't see this as a slam on Roberts. He is a very capable back up pg, and emergency fill in when injuries hit the team.

I think there should be a rule allowing (encouraging?) a player who is about to injure someone the right to grab the player, even going so far as to remove both players from the play, in order to protect everyone's safety. I've done this before in pickup ball. If a guy running full speed doesn't see my pick coming I just wrap my arms around him to protect him--there's no reason to lay a shoulder into someone blind just because you CAN. And, I gained no advantage by doing so.
If the NBA did that, it would change the onus to the player setting the pick to NOT deliver the cheap shot blow. It would still be legal to do so, but it would turn into more of a self-policing rule like baseball has. You want to plunk someone? Hit them in the hip, not the head, or a fight breaks out. You want to set a blind pick on someone? Grab him and soften the blow. It could become customary, and lead to fights if you do NOT grab him.

Really had to dig to find this thread as B-Rob has been collecting DNP-CDs as of late. The Hornets played the Pistons last night in Charlotte and I DVRed it. He ended up with 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 9 minutes of action as the Hornets blew out Detroit.

Expect similar numbers in the last 2 games for each as it's time for non-playoff teams to play for the future.
The effort by Charlotte to not qualify for the playoffs has been extraordinary this past month. They've laid down and played dead virtually every game since mid-March. Not sure why, because at the time they were fighting for the 7th playoff spot.
Just another reason not to like the NBA.

Yea, so what. That's just simply a confirmation that he has really "made it" in the NBA. Many of those players in the NBA have been that way for years! (tongue in cheek OK)
Needless to say, I'm NOT suggesting that it's OK or anything---but just simply NOT a surprise.
He's not in the NBA because of his "defense". Scored 29 last week in a game and has a 5+ million dollar contract-------again none of that having to do with his defense! Lots of players over the years who had rather lengthy NBA careers didn't excel at the defensive end of the court and he's NEVER been a "good or great defender"!

How many players are expending energy on defense in a meaningless game at the end of an 82 game season?

How 'bout ones who don't have meaningful guaranteed contracts for 2015-16+ and/or anyone with a desire to get one...

All good points. It just seemed like an Ole' effort every single time. Part of the reason I can't stand the professional layup drill league.

Brob is over matched physically on D in the NBA. He needs help - ie team defense. And that is likely why he does not butt heads and get beat up, given that he will need help anyway......
How is that for a rationalization?

Not sure if you are referencing Roberts or not, but his contract next year is for $2.8million and is fully guaranteed.

I obviously wasn't referencing Roberts...why would you even imply that? But there are dozens of tweeners in the NBA like Chris Johnson who can't afford to take 1 second off in terms of effort whether it be practice, games, warm-ups, mini-camps, try-outs or workouts.
But don't tell GlenN that...he thinks that if a game doesn't matter (to him or the standings) that it doesn't matter to anyone. Could anything be further from the truth (I mean, besides man-made global warming... )

With the Hornets signing of Jeremy Lin, Brian Roberts may have dropped a notch to #3 point guard. Lin appears to be a flash in the pan who has seen his 30 seconds of fame, but the Hornets are counting on him as the #2 point guard.

When your shot is your bread and butter, last year's performance (39 FG%, 32 3P%) isn't going to cut it.
Upshot: He's got another year guaranteed with the Hornets at a cool $2.9 mil.

Lin's nothing like he was for 10 games in New York, but he's been fine for a backup. Or maybe a starter for a non-contender.
With any luck, Roberts will wind up with the Spurs. He could shoot 60% on 3s with the attention their new front court will command.

The Spurs play sneaky good defense. That's what Pops would have to have with any shooter he takes.

Lin and Roberts both play bad defense.
