TV Tidbits 2023-24
I thought I would start my annual broadcast primer for the upcoming season. Here’s what we know so far and what I am at least projecting.
1. An explanation of networks or services you will be seeing in this post,
A. BTN, Big Ten network self-explanatory.
B. CBS Sports net work (CBSSN) cable channel carrying Atlantic 10 and American athletic conference basketball
C. ESPN Network means the actual TV networks, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN news
D. ESPN plus, the ESPN streaming service. Select events are also available in select bars/restaurants as part of the ESPN plus for business package on DIRECTV.
E. Fox Sports 1 (FS1 cable channel that carries Big10 and Big12 sports
F. Peacock, may also be referred to as NBC digital, NBC’s streaming service, carrying both Atlantic 10 and now Big Ten sports. This service also is available in select bars and restaurants via a DirecTV subscription.
G. USA television network, usually showing countless episodes of Law and order, oh, and Atlantic 10 basketball. Note they do not carry big 10 basketball. That will be important later.
2. We have an official TV designation for one game! It’s our first one in Charleston. LSU 4 PM on November 16 ESPN2. There could be a game on ESPN plus during the last day, but I believe that’s the seventh Place game, so God willing, we are not in that 12:30 p.m. contest. One more note about Charleston. If you plan on going to watch a game with our beloved Flyers on that Sunday, the Browns and Steelers play at 1 o’clock. Have fun with that!
3. I’m really curious to see where the following games land.
A. at Northwestern. Remember that the new Big Ten deal starts this year. That means, it will not be on any ESPN linear or streaming service. It will be on the Big Ten network or Peacock, as I believe Fox sports one has a Big Ten football game that evening.
B. Neutral contest against Cincinnati. It could be on an ESPN network, (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, ) ESPN plus, or possibly fox since the big 12 has a relationship with them. Further complicating things is that a time for this game may not be announced until we know when the Bengals play that weekend. That is the NFL flex Saturday. We will likely find out around Thanksgiving.
C. At SMU and home for UNLV. This could again either be on ESPN family of networks, ESPN, plus, or CBS Sports network. I believe the Atlantic 10, the American, and mountain west at least, when we have a home game, all share the same broadcast partners.
4. I’m not sure if spectrum will be carrying any games. Usually those games are also on ESPN plus and are only shown on television in the Dayton area. Pro tip, if you have spectrum Internet, you have access to all four channels in the state of Ohio using the app.
5. X, or Twitter, or whatever you call them These days is a great source for finding out tip times and TV designations prior to beautiful official schedule coming out. Jon Rothstein, eye on sky and air sports, and mattsarz just to name a few.
6. The Atlantic 10 portion of the schedule usually comes out the week of Labor Day. Along with that schedule, we will sometimes get TV listings. Note that they can come out as late as October though.
Happy channel surfing, and go Flyers!
