You'll see that the Dayton alumni that played in the NBA has not seen a notable uptick in recent years. Despite being Crutcher being on the cusp, Toppin's the only NBA player Grant has produced at UD.
I think both Holmes and Camara will get at the very least cups of coffee, but I don't think Mike's shown NBA caliber yet.
And this is the point. Lots of hype and optimism, not much in the way of production.
Hope we can regain some recruiting momentum in the 2024 class.
|
Thanks for the link. I will take a look. Binary IN/NOT IN criteria to measure uptick isn't a very good measurement of recruitment for a school that has only had a handful of players play in the NBA over the past 25 years let alone any meaningful time on the court.
To me it's the same problem I have with some who evaluate a coach ONLY on how many times they were in or not in the tourney. The misses need to be evaluated to some degree when classifyng the state of the program. It's a huge difference to ending as last team out, in top 75, or 200+ and above.
Same argument here. When if ever was the last time we had 2 players in several mock drafts in the same year? The nbr of kids declaring is another indicator of an uptick. We had 3 this year. Wondering if that has happened before either.
I think the obstacle to seeing the uptick to many is that it hasn't really translated on the court so it must have been hyperbole. Uptick and a lack of team success aren't mutually exclusive. Both can exist at the same time or there could be downward trend in high profile talent at the same time as an uptick in team success too.

Maybe veto was the wrong word, but trust me when I say X made it clear that they did not want us in the league with them. The BE told them they would grant them their wish that time, but moving forward if there was additional expansion, they would not be able to block us again. This from a source that was/is very close with the Big East and had firsthand knowledge of the NBE expansion talks.

Seems traditional recruiting has fallen off the map for Grant and company.
The incoming class turned out fairly well, but it was certainly unconventional. Simons was a typical recruitment and signing. Otherwise two late decommits and a European longshot (who already bailed).
We'll find out in time if this is a fruitful approach, but Grant has always worked odd angles. Amzil and Nwokeji were mid-year additions. Toppin was effectively a Prop 48.
Hard to be too critical, because compared to its A10 brethren we've always been one of the more talented teams in conference.

Yes, that gives Nevada two 7 footers and a 6’10” grad student who’s been playing college basketball for 12 years. I am just kidding. The kid has been injured, a lot.
I thought that Dayton was going to start playing a lot of Mountain West team’s? Whatever happened to that scheduling strategy?

247 Sports says 6’11” 205. So, he is very thin. Thin like Josh Benson or Richard Montague. I wonder if he is really 6’11”” or if the earlier web posts say he is 6’9”? Remember that Tyrone Baker was 6’11 at Georgia and came to Dayton and was suddenly 6’9”.

Per the tweet and On3, already officially visited Seton Hall.
He's currently in Dayton.
Upcoming official visits to Western Kentucky, Butler, South Carolina and Saint Louis.
Claims Cal, Stanford and VCU offers as well.
Baxter, where Noah hails from, is deep southeastern Kentucky; closer to Knoxville, Tennessee, than Lexington.
You'd think this would be a recruiting battle Dayton could win.

Baxter, KY is in an area with a lot of Appalachian poverty. My mother is from the Virginia side around 35 minutes away. June Carter Cash was from the same area in VA. She was from Poor Valley. I still chuckle when I think about Poor Valley. As poor as everyone else was, how little did the people in Poor Valley have?

Trent led Harlan County and ranked seventh across KHSAA with 28.1 points per game on 54% shooting as a sophomore. The 6-7 guard made 38.4% of his 3-pointers and grabbed a team-best 9.9 rebounds per contest.

Definitely a winnable final five.
You'd have to think Dayton's recent success developing big men has to be appealing to somebody like Jaden Smith.

He also played at Calvary Christian in Fort Lauderdale, where Marvel Allen played 2 seasons. The staff has a lot of connections in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area.

Lathan previously played at Calvary Christian, where Marvel Allen played his sophomore and junior seasons. Not sure that means anything, honestly, just thought it was interesting. (Allen played his senior season at Montverde where DaRon Holmes played half of his senior season.)
Hard to pin down where Lathan is from originally. A couple recruiting services suggest Rockford, Illinois. Another says Branson, Missouri. Compass will be his fourth high school, each in a different state (Illinois, Missouri, Florida and Arizona).
Super athletic big. Looks like an NBA player in his highlights. I suspect there's some inconsistency in his game.

He has power forward written all over him. Wonder if he has any outside shooting skills? He is Grant's kind of player, mobile, good defender and can play other positions.

Jaden Smith, 6-11, to announce his college choice on Friday. Dayton is one of five finalists. I don’t know if we had him in for a visit. Would love to get this kid, though DePaul may be the favorite.
——
“Jaden Smith, the No. 39 overall center in the 2024 class, out of Chicago (Ill.) Kenwood will make his college decision on Friday, October 27th at 3:30 PM CT live on Instagram. Finalists: Arizona State, Dayton, DePaul, Loyola Chicago and Fordham.”

Not a great sign that they're having trouble landing big men, given the development and success of Toppin, Camara and Holmes.
Grant and company continue to move away from traditional recruiting, and with as talented of a roster as they've ever had, maybe we shouldn't sweat it.
But with a week and half until signing day, Dayton on pace to land just one okay prospect (Simon) in the last two traditional recruiting classes. I suppose it's six of one, a half dozen of another, but roster building this way feels a little unsettling.
Winning the A10 and making a run to the second weekend would increase UD's profile among prospects. Let's go ahead and do that.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using the portal in addition to adding freshmen, or even using it more than freshmen. I guess my question would be, don't you consider Petras Padegimas and Marvel Allen to be "okay?" On paper I would say they are more than just okay. This year they signed four transfers and four freshmen (even though Erceg backed out). That seems like a pretty good mix.

Geez, can we just relax and give the coaching team some slack? Go back and read some of our bball geniuses on this board and according to their opinion most of the recruits we landed couldn't play for the Little Sisters of the Poor.....give it a break!!

Mo Amzil signed up with Dayton on November 16 and was able to play at the half way point in the academic year. Since we are past November 16, does this mean that there is no new player joining to replace the European guy (Erceg) who left? Erceg left around July 8.
