you do realize that average
crowd at best is better than
the vast majority of the schools in the U.S.
I was listening on the echo
WHIO feed, and the crowd got
loud and proud at the end, I
could hear it, and so could the
recruit.....

I couldn’t agree with you more. The crowd was as flat as the team. However, there wasn’t a lot to get excited about last night.

I see this one a little different. Yes, the crowd seemed flat with little to excite them. But if one of our guys managed to pull off a "Sibert" shot, we would see a few things clearer.
5 seconds with the ball inbound at our end is an eternity to get off a good shot. I pray that we certainly rehearsed that scenario in practice. Unfortunately it appeared that we did not.
So alas, we gagged it.
Now, what excited me in this loss is the lane protection with Holmes. Secondly, the clutch 3 point shooting of Blakney, And the two by Brea who also had a 3rd early in the game that was all the way down and came out. Would have put him 3/6 for the night. Smith hit clutch free throws and attacked the jar. He had the look of a sniper at times. Blakney looked focused shooting pressure free throws.
There are others that may lead to something. One would be Smith's continued development at point guard. He just looks NY tough.
Two more points would have made for a calmer critique for sure.

@Corey_Albertson
2024 wing Jonathan Powell, formerly of Dayton Chaminade Julienne but heading to Centerville, starting to blow up. One of the best talents in Ohio in the 2024 class.
@TravisGrafHoops
Sources tell Rivals that Illinois has offered Wildcat Select 2024 guard Jonathan Powell on the heels of his breakout performance of 45 points against Indiana Elite.
Top talent in the junior class.

The Flyers have an offer out on him as well. There is some limited video out there on Jonathan. He is lean - 6'4"/170 pounds. He has the potential to score in a lot of ways; runs the court well and has a good handle. His stroke is a bit odd and I saw no buckets off the dribble. He uses the glass very well and glides through defenders with a quick first-step. I am trying to think whom he reminds me of. He sort of reminds me of Weaver with his ability to use the glass and glide through the paint.

Do not think he has been offered by IU. He visited and they are interested.
"To this point South Carolina, Youngstown State, Lehigh and Ohio have offered Theodosiou. Indiana plans to keep an eye on him and attend some games as he competes against a challenging schedule this fall and winter."

Trent had a family connection to Illinois. His situation was different from other players who have transferred out. Trent’s dream was to play at Illinois, and that opportunity only presented itself after Trent’s outstanding play for UD. Theo is a Canadian kid looking to make it in the US.

That article was also wrote by an IU website. Of course it's going to have an IU slant to it.

Reviewing old posts, and I came across this one about Jonathan Powell, which was a reply to a previous one. Reminded me of a situation during the 1998-99 season, when our top recruit for the following year was Brooks Hall. A friend and I were in the Christmas Pep Band, and we had a similar discussion about our perception of Brooks’ thoughts as our Flyers were stinking up the Arena that night. We agreed that, watching that mess, Brooks was probably thinking he’d come in the next year and start immediately. Just then, as if “on cue”, who came walking by but Brooks Hall! Man, did my friend and I get the stink eye that night! 😂

Yes, very classy young man. One of the sites had him 100% going to IU. But if that were the case, why would he then accept a visit to UD? I wonder if our coaching staff were able to "pull a rabbit out of the hat?"

Instead of paying attention to how things are written…why not pay attention to all the schools offering him. Just saying.

My coupons expired. I heard that they were available at the Kroger on the corner of Wenger and Union. Didn’t have time to make that hike. Anyhoo, I like the company Grant keeps on the recruiting circuit. I bet he kills it once he gets into a living room.

A UD mention in this article about a Kameron Wright visit to Florida:
The high school junior said Dayton, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kansas, LSU and Oklahoma State are among the teams that are yet to extend scholarship offers but opened a dialogue. He added that “Florida, Kansas, Yale, USF, UCF, Dayton, FAU, Tulsa, Georgia Tech and LSU,” are the schools recruiting him hardest.

To me, it sounds like he wants an offer.

Here is an article about Gicarri. Lots of high major competition including Purdue, the alma mater of his father, Glenn Robinson.

I must be getting old, cause a lot of the stars of my youth have had their kids pick up offers from UD in the last couple of seasons.
Sconnie Penn's son, Jamal Mashburn's kid and now Glen Robinson (plus I'm sure a few others I've forgotten about). Making me feel old

Glenn Robinson III
Glenn Robinson III went to Michigan, so I wouldn't put too much into the Purdue influence. Surely there is some, but it's not necessarily a family pipeline situation.

The Big Dog, Glen, an ex-Purdue player is the father of Glen III. He is also the father of Harris.
From the Gold and Black, "but Purdue's gained real traction outside its normal recruiting footprint, after getting in on Harris early in part due to the fact that Harris is one of former Boilermaker star Glenn Robinson's sons."

Seems like Jaden Smith would be an excellent recruit and love to have him for UD.
I am probably wrong but with continuing sentiment for UD to join the Big East in the future, why wouldn't he want DePaul, the hometown BE representative, and be playing against better competition and in front of hometown fans?

DePaul plays in front of sparse crowds and is a moribund program. Koby transferred from DePaul tonUD for a reason, and it’s not because he wasn’t because of playing time.

January 2021 they finally won a big game beating #20 Seton Hall at home but only 557 fans cared enough to show up. Have a better chance of more people from Chicago at a UD game than a DePaul game

I think he saw an offense that fed our big guy to the tune of 34 points. If I'm 6'10", that would get my attention.

Larry Johnson is a 6'4" shooting guard that plays above the rim. Loves to go left (unlike Mali who loves to go right) and finishes with either hand comfortably in traffic. I hope we get him because all the P5 schools seem to be putting him on their radar after his showing at EYBL.

Not sure who US is, but if you’re referring to UD you are very wrong. Just see-DaRon Holmes, Toumani Camara, Dwayne Cohill among others. In fact, UD has done very well recruiting against these types of programs.

For whatever reason, Grant has never recruited well locally.
In the last two classes, Jonathan Powell, Devin Royal (Columbus), Dailyn Swain (Columbus), Gabe Cupps, Adam Parks, George Washington (dad is on the women's staff), Lawrent Rice all had offers, I believe.
It's not necessarily a criticism. Grant's recruiting is fine. He just hasn't focused on local players. Might be NIL. Might be Grant's preference. Might just have bad luck.

There’s no shame in losing the recruiting battles for Ohio players in the list above. Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana aren’t easy to beat, even for a good recruiter with the A10 as an anchor
Rice is interesting one because he had at point a bunch of power conference offers and ended up at Murray St.

Interesting post. To be honest, I'm not sure he's been focused on the 4-5 star recruits/elite level players locally for what could be several reasons and maybe there's behind-the-scenes discussions we're not privy to where these players tell AG and staff thanks but no thanks, as in don't waste your time.

O'Brien, Purnell, Gregory and Miller didn't recruit well locally either. There have been a couple local diamonds in the rough (Landers), but the list of 4- and 5-star locals who signed with UD pretty much starts and ends with Chris Wright (Staten doesn't count).
Without going back to the stone age, had UD in recent times been able to keep the likes of Collier, Baker, Cook, Hutson, Payne, Taylor, Sato, Carson, etc.. we'd be a powerhouse.
But it certainly isn't a Grant problem. It's a UD problem.

Just a side note: GWIII wasn't really a local. He went to high school for three years in Louisville before moving here for this past year. His dad is no longer on the women's staff.

I want to emphasize this is not necessarily a criticism of Grant, more likely a preference of his.
But there's really no argument that Grant has not recruited locally (Columbus-Dayton-Cincinnati) as well as the coaches that preceded him.
BG landing Wright and Staten are an example of hitting local homeruns. Throw in Josh Benson, Chris Johnson, Matt Kavanaugh, Ralph Hill, Jalen Robinson and Devon Scott. Obviously, they didn't all work out, and some you probably want a do-over on, but the point is recruiting was more local.
Archie was less invested locally. Primarily, just Landers, Mikesell and Xeyrius Williams, maybe you count Big Steve from Fort Wayne.
Certainly, geographic proximity means less in present times than it did even 10 years ago. So, again, not necessarily blaming Grant, but you'd think there's a small advantage still. Ostensibly, you should have local connections and have a better read on diamonds in the rough. On occasion, you'd think proximity would be an advantage in landing bigger recruits as well.

Would someone from the Dayton area have any increased NIL opportunities if they stayed local?

Maybe on paper Staten was a homerun but UD would have been better off losing that recruiting battle

Robinson and Scott were AM guys, not BG.

It was still a huge recruiting win. How a guy plays out a year later is totally different unless Miss Cloe is involved.

Powell's in the backyard, was on campus a lot as a young high school player, and played with the then-associate head coach's son at CJ (and likely knew Grant's kids). And we were nowhere close in the end.
Again, Grant's biggest problem isn't recruiting, but he's certainly not a dynamic recruiter. He's hit a homerun and found a diamond in the rough. All in all, it's been on-par with those that came before him. He certainly hasn't upped the ante.
Hard to be too excited about the recruiting momentum as well. A three-star, a European mystery (and Marvel Allen, forgot about him!) and not much else to show for the previous two recruiting classes. Suppose Sharavjamts was a good land, but that was pretty messy from day one.

I will say this about local players, many of them will just want to go somewhere else just to be somewhere else. I know when I was a teenager I wanted to go anywhere but UD or WSU. My mom worked at UD so my folks very much wanted me to go there. My folks won the argument. It worked well for me as I very enjoyed my time at UD much more than I ever thought I would and after college when everyone's student loan bills started coming due, I was very glad I "lost" the argument.

You either dismiss some of the best recruits we've seen in decades or leave them out all together. I'd argue finding a diamond in the rough (which describes both Obi and Jalen) may be more impressive than landing a sure thing.
You also dismiss guys that haven't even stepped on the court at UD based on ratings or lack thereof. Some of our best players ever (CJ, BRob, Jalen) were 2-3 star guys.
Mike came here and he's high profile and on lists. It's too early to tell if it's hype or not. Jalen is on the cusp of the league, Obi is in the league, and we have Camara and Holmes in several mocks being drafted in the 2nd.
I've been following this team for 40+ years and have never seen this kind of real interest from the NBA that we are seeing now. I don't see how anyone can argue this based on the realities that exist. If anyone can provide details of similar results from OP, BG, AM or even DD I'd be glad to change my mind.

Certainly some truth to this, and I think younger generations have their eyes open to the wider world than we did in the early and pre-internet days.
I also think we're feeling the effects of being left behind. If you've got an offer to play in the Big East and an offer to play in the sinking A10, all things being equal, that's a pretty easy choice.

Sort this link by draft year: https://basketball.realgm.com/ncaa/c...16/nba-players
You'll see that the Dayton alumni that played in the NBA has not seen a notable uptick in recent years. Despite being Crutcher being on the cusp, Toppin's the only NBA player Grant has produced at UD.
I think both Holmes and Camara will get at the very least cups of coffee, but I don't think Mike's shown NBA caliber yet.
And this is the point. Lots of hype and optimism, not much in the way of production.
Hope we can regain some recruiting momentum in the 2024 class.

Generally speaking, trying to recruit high profile local kids to play for Dayton in the weak A10 is a difficult obstacle to overcome. This won’t change until our league affiliation is significantly upgraded. Yes, we have great facilities and fan support, but playing road games in high school gyms in a one bid conference is a tough sell. Sucks that he chose that miserable school forty miles south!

I'd be surprised if we have had signed even 10 high profile local players in the last 25 years. I can think of KW, CWright, and Staten who signed. We also got Toney after he went Juco. Ryan Mikesell was a real nice player but I don't remember him being high profile.
I've also never bought in to the mentality that you have to win the battle for the local guys to be successful. This one guy is neither new or trending.
If Daron would just announce his intentions, I could go away and stop bothering/arguing other's posts. That and get my grass cut. It is looking real shaggy.
