Rhode Island Win - Observations

For those not at the arena, you missed an incredible crowd!! UD Arena was electric. Amazing. Very loud and spirited all game. The students were really into the game.

Pre-game ovation for Jordan was exciting. (Lots of superlatives in my write up tonight)

After hearing Archie talk, I expected a close contest. Rhode Island is a lot like a Rick Majerus team. They play hard defense and contest everything. They lead the league in 3 point shooting percentage defense. They push, grab and bump you all over the court.

As so often, the UD offense started slow and two things got things going. Turnovers with Kyle Davis finishes and Jordan Sibert. Once again, Sibert lifted the offense.

During the first 10 minutes, the Rams did not look like a team that is tired and on the road. At one point, they were shooting 70% from the field and had blocked a number of UD shot inside. However, foul trouble became a big problem for Rhode Island.

Then momentum started to turn. Rhode Island's shooting came back to earth and Jordan Sibert began to shred their defense.

8 point lead half time and you could tell UD won the 2nd part of the 1st half. Rhode Island was shooting 41 to 42% at half time while being at 70% earlier. They are not a good shooting team. They were horrible at the foul line.

Second half stretched the lead, then Sibert picked up his third foul. Archie kept him on the bench as long as the lead stayed high. The Rams challenged several time but never got in under 6 or 7. When the got the score close, UD answered.

Pollard and Pierre picked up in the 2nd half when Sibert hit the bench.

The Rams play hard defense, but they probably get calls for only half the fouls they commit. Archie made some genius moves. The UD offense had to play a lot more isolation and one on one instead of the unusual passing game. UD created a number of isolations and mismatches. They exploited Rhode Island.

Fans were boisterous and booed the refs. The stripes let them play a lot, but did call hand checks on drives to the rim a lot. I don't think they were as bad as the fans thought. Rhode Island fouled out 2 players.

Another good floor game by Scoochie. 2nd game in a row with 8 turnovers. Incredible!

UD's defense was not great in the 2nd half. Rhode Island finished at 50% shooting and they had only 11 turnovers. The Rams got a lot of dribble penetration and fouls. But that did not help them dig out of their hole. As hard as they played defense, they were unable to stop UD's offense.

Curtain call for Jordan was really cool. Fans who started to leave early missed a gracious player take a curtain call. He saluted the fans. After the game, the players saluted the student section. Many of us did not want to leave the arena.

Jordan is a class act as person. I was skeptical when he transferred, but he has made me a believer. He has played extremely well down the stretch, like the way a top 50 recruit who would go to a national caliber program would play. His offense is as good as any player in the A10.

Off the court, he is polite, humble and religious. You have fun talking to him. What a great young man! I talked to him last year after the Florida loss and you could tell he was determined the have a great senior year.

Incredible undefeated home season. Fun season. Lot of fans said they did not want the home games to stop.

Coaching has been outstanding and the players have played as a team and displayed their talents. They have minimized their weaknesses better than any team I have ever seen (except maybe the 84 team).

This team has some amazing talent. They used it and some grittiness tonight. the 6th man (the crowd) helped pump them up and gave the adrenaline to help win the game.

Our defense and ball movement was back to where it was a few weeks ago. A forty minute great effort on defense by all seven players.

Sibert, Pierre and Pollard with awesome performances. Kyle with some great early steals that got us going and great defense. He is amazing how he doubles so much and never loses his man. Is Scoochie one of the best ever at bringing the ball up the court flawlessly? He controls the tempo so well that we never exceeded a shot clock, but used most of the clock most of the time.

The crowd was unbelievable... everyone on their feet and screaming for defense at times. The team seemed to feed off it. The student section was amazing, coming in early, working from the Trueteam chant and kept the rest of the Arena fired up. Could not imagine a better venue. URI never had a chance. our kids and our fans were not going to be denied on senior night in our house. A great night to be a FLyer and be a part of this.

The TV announcers kept talking about the great atmosphere in the Arena. But then, almost every broadcast crew does to one extent or another.

I heard, too, that the ghost of Dustin Hellenga tried to get in, but Ghost Busters Venkman and Stantz caught him at the West Entrance and "contained" him.

I hate to be negative but the crowd got up a few times only because Archie waved his arms to get them up. The students have had rough games but they were great tonight. Our crowd was good, but not great; I'd say a bit overrated for all the accolades we get compared to other top crowds.

DAYTON, Ohio — The cauldron of noise and college basketball tradition that is UD Arena swallowed the University of Rhode Island whole on Tuesday night.

No road atmosphere in the Atlantic 10 can compare to the Flyers’ home floor, where perfection was maintained with a share of first place in the conference standings on the line...

Thumbs up A-10 tournament seed possibilities

With the win tonight, Dayton has clinched at worst the 2 seed in the A-10 tournament, win or lose against LaSalle (due to favorable tiebreakers against both VCU and Rhode Island - every 2, 3, or 4 way tiebreaker puts UD at 1 or 2).

2-way:
UD-Davidson - UD 2
UD-Rhode Island - UD 1
UD-VCU - UD 1

3-way:
UD-Davidson-Rhode Island - UD 2 (Davidson 1)
UD-VCU-Rhode Island - UD 1
UD-Davidson-VCU - UD 2 (VCU 1) - in this case, VCU benefits from 2 wins over Davidson (2-1, UD 1-1, Dav 1-2)

4-way:
UD-Davidson-VCU-Rhode Island - UD 2 (VCU 1) - same as 3-way

All that being said, Let's Go V C U (ok, just Thursday).

At this point in the season on two days rest with travel, Archie knows his men are tired mentally and physically. He knows in this game that the players are feeding their intensity from the crowd. The urging to crowd was Archie's way of getting his team some energy. Wherli and Davis only played 21 minutes between the two of them.

This is infuriating. This fan base took over Memphis last year, stood toe-to-toe with the Syracuse crowd in Buffalo, was overpowering in Maui, represented best in San Juan, gets put up at the top of the list by 99 percent of media experts(the other one percent must have dementia or never saw a Dayton game), has helped raise the team to an undefeated record at home with a 21 game winning streak overall since end of last season, and a Flyers fan says we're overrated? Not a Xavier fan, not an opposing fan from the A10, but a Flyers fan? Are you kidding me?

You might think yourself the voice of reason, but you're not. What you just posted would be comparable to a Yankees fan saying "the accolades of our teams' achievements in baseball history is a bit overrated".

Naive at the least coming from an opposing fan, absolutely mindboggling coming from a Flyers fan.

Infuriating? Easy now, I think you might be taking things too seriously.

Did I say anything about the support of fan base? I'm speaking of noise level. Memphis? I was there last year and it was amazing. We travel with the best of bigtime fan bases. I don't for one second question the passion of this fan base. I just have to say that i always hear that we pack the place full of 13k fans every night. That's not true. There's usually a lot of empty seats in the corners of the 400s. We aren't always loud. Last night was good, the best of the year. I've seen a lot of other games on TV where atmosphere matches that of last night. Attack me all you want, but I'm just being honest. Chill out. I'm not taking anything away from the team and their achievements. Sometimes I think some people are more concerned about perception than reality.

I was and totally disagree ==the place was going crazy. Could not ask for a more energized crowd. You could just see the team feed of it. The ovations for Siebert were deafning.

Larry said several times that it was the loudest crowd in the 30+ years he's been doing the games. I've been a seaon ticket holder for over 25 years and thos game ranks up in the top 2 or 3 alltime for noise level.

So why choose to pick at a scab after last night's incredible atmosphere? Why not stop at "...the best of the year?"

Same with John Beddel on Flyer Feedback spending first 15 minutes talking about all the Archie doubters after starting A10 1-5 last year...really? We just kicked URI back to Kingston and celebrated an amazing senior's performance and that's how you start the show?

“This was a hell of an environment today,” Hurley said. “That crowd was electric. They were a huge factor. It affected our communication early. It affected our communication on defense. It was hostile.”

Really surprised Larry H thought that was the loudest. I've been to a lot of games and I can say most every Zavier game was louder. Pitt was louder. We had an incredible comeback against St Joe's in the Brooks Hall years, that was one of the loudest ever. Villanova in 2002, Marquette with Dwayne Wade. Like I said, last night was good, but probably outside top ten all time

You had a lot of things come together last night... fighting for an NCAA berth, fighting for a conference championship (which, again, we have never won a regular season conf. championship), playing Rhode Island, a team that generally beats us regardless of record, and Sibert's senior night.

You also have us having a lack of big home games over the last few years... so while I would agree with everyone that last night's crowd was absolutely fantastic, it may have seemed even greater in comparison with recent memory.

Need to find teams/coaches that want to test their team in that type of environment in order to prepare for conference and post season.

I think as the program moves along (does a noteworthy game or 2 in the NCAA this year too), don't be surprised that we start to see maybe one team then maybe two teams begin to deal with us and we open up a home and home series. I'm not talking SEC either. We will have to be willing to go into the dragon's lair as they will have to visit here on return.

I think Archie can get this program there sooner then we imagine as he has done to get us relevant on the national scene in his short time here.

Go UD!

I agree. We have had the Ole Miss, now Arkansas home and home games. Those are actually 2 really good games. Both tourney teams, one top 25. If we move up the food chain to someone like Mich St (although Ark may be better this year), our fan base will be really pumped but I don't think the opponent's fan base would be as intense.

Basketball is not rocket science. The trick is getting a group of guys to subvert their egos and play as a team, share the ball on offense and help on defense. Archie recruited this group and they have completely bought in to the "True Team" concept. No egos, no forced shots, no ball stoppers, no "I have to get mine" attitudes. The ball move and player movement was exquisite. The only time the ball stopped was when it entered the post (as it should) and Pollard and Pierre were patient and attacking the interior of the defense. Having versatile interior players is far more important than size.

I have always liked the idea of "playing small" but it was something that BG never embraced even though IMO he had far more talent on the perimeter and wing. Maybe Archie doesn't cave in if Scott and Robinson had hung around but it is moot. Last night Biruta (any of their players other than Martin) was helpless against Pierre/Pollard. It was fun to watch and the crowd was awesome.

Best senior night in recent memory.

Enjoy the ride.

Incredibly proud of what they've achieved, in particular because they did it the right way. No individual is more important than the team.

I agree. And if the guy that has been calling games in the same seat for 30+ years -- over 500 games -- states it's the loudest, or one of the loudest ever, it's hard to argue against him. Especially when his seat is on the court, with the noise funneling down to him from every angle. He truly would have the best perspective.

Since you've seen so many games on TV, must make you an expert on crowd noise. Your opinion should carry more weight than Larry.

Next year could be the year we see a big team come here for a TV game. Archie is hot and with what we have coming back and coming in, no reason we should not be very good next year. Winning a couple NCAA games would help that cause.

Let's add talent to that mix. You can get a bunch of guys without talent to check their egos at the door. And they would get smoked...

This team is successful at small because of their talents, unique skills sets and unselfish ego. Each of the starting five is among the top talents in the A10.

To be successful, you need all three. If any one fails, you are in trouble. That is why more teams don't play small ball.

Wow.....

I was part of the "havoc---less" crowd on Saturday watching the Flyers! You want to mention "over rated".......

Hey, does every person stand all game long---NO. Last night the place was awesome!

Also that doesn't happen every game----anywhere!

Has it been louder, have people on occasion stood most of the game at times in the past etc.-----sure, big deal! Last night the students showed, we stood and the players, staff and most importantly Miller said the atmosphere was "magical"---he should know! I'll take that endorsement!

So what if Archie waves his hands a bit-------there is a reason our arena is always spoken of in such a high regard----that comes after 40+ years of "standing" and cheering that has made the "experience" what it is year in and year out!

Last night was the first time I had seen Scoochie during the game wave his arms for the crowd... you could definitely tell they were feeding off it and really feeling the effects of it. After a couple of not-so-great years at home, this year was just outstanding, and this last game was the most special of all.

I'm sure they would love for it to be like that all the time, but a December game against BU just isn't going to draw the same reaction from the crowd.

I do it at home and do it in person. Sometimes I just sit there, watching, waiting for the time to go by. I know we are up and logic says we should have the game in hand but I just sit there emotionless. Sometimes I need someone to kick me in the a** (or wave their arms) to get me back in the fold.

For me, every game is trying to catch the Pitt game in terms of insanity (in fairness, I was a student and it was particularly boisterous down there). Some x games were louder. But this one was up there. The crowd was getting on their feet making noise in the first half, which is always great to see. It was a ton of fun, and hopefully we get a lot more of that at home next season.

I read near half the posts, and I will say as one enough in the competitive fray, that this sometimes seemingly tumultuous forum has good cohesion.

I have had a great feel about ALL of this Flyer group here, the Flyer team, the progress of the program with Archie and Morgan, and the general foreseeable future of Dayton basketball.

Certainly from home TV, the crowd was loud and noticeably positive for R.I.!

I became a fan after the Pitt game, but saw film. THAT insane energy jumped from the screen. The 2008-2009 X game was exceptional too. This game ranked third to my perception, but the ovation for Sibert resonated!

Top 2 or 3 in recent memory, maybe. Top 2 or 3 of all time, well, that's a bit of a stretch. Larry was here for Pitt in 2007, DePaul in 1984, X in, well, any year (including the MCC Championship tilt in 1990), and several other big games over the years. Top 10 in his time here, yeah. Top 2 or 3, mmmmm, maybe not quite.

I will say this, though: I was on my feet last night in Section 215 as much as I can remember, and I wasn't doing it just because Archie, Scoochie, or anybody else asked me to. And 1 funny side note to that. The man & woman sitting next to me were "squatting" in seats that are bought (and usually occupied) by another couple. At one point late in the 2nd half, the woman begged the guy in the row below us to sit down. He turned around and said, "Don't ask me! Ask THEM!" and he pointed to all the rows below him that were also on their feet, all the way down to the court. Yes, the joint was rockin'!

I think that this might be the smartest team I have ever watched at UD. I credit Archie with that. We make good decision after good decision. Players are not trying to do things beyond their abilities. The strategy is "team based".

good point Fudd. We used to complain about basketball IQ of Gregory's players.

We now have THE smartest team i have seen also. They value the ball, know how to limit fouls (well 4 of 6 do , great movement and screening. No stupid use of picks.

No weaves. Great bodying up and walling on D and rebounding. REally efficient team, in game IQ, making great decisons on shot selections (most but not the entire season). Making great decisions when it counts.

The last ten games and key games during the season. In fact, i'm a huge believer in the Last 10 records for teams. Peaking is super important for tournament play.

Was AT that game, high up in the student section where guy was shooting that missed foul shot. Was incredible feeling.

Plus CBS or NBC, one of major networks was there broadcasting. Great game environment that day! Schelly to Chappy to YOUN!

Goodness - where do I start. Just some thoughts off the top.

Loved Morgan Miller's pic of the full student section 52 minutes before tip.

The students were awesome last night.

One of the most enjoyable seasons in my 50 years of watching Flyer hoops. This is how basketball was meant to be played.

The whole of this team is so much more than the sum of the individual parts.

Our offense is so so efficient. Even when we go deep into the shot clock, we maintain our poise, and find a good shot by the right shooter. Can't ever remember a Flyer team - even the Nigel Knight senior year - when our offense ran so smoothly. Did we even take any bad shots last night. If so, they were few and far between. Just as important, players played within their skill set.

Defensively, we are solid but not great. A good part of that is due to our limited numbers. We cannot afford to get up in the grill defensively of the other team for fear of committing unnecessary fouls.

The two quick fouls that Sibert picked up at the beginning of the second half were caused by bad hedging out top. Sibert was forced to rotate over to pick up a big rolling to the hoop - bad matchup.

Thought the "T" that was called on Buchanan was a bad call. Yes, he expressed some frustration with the call, but I thought it was at himself and not at the ref.

Scoochie had a tremendous game. Handled the pressure so well.

Pollard - as the Projo writer said "Too big for the smalls and too quick for the bigs"

How could anyone have a better Senior night than Sibert's perfect shooting game?

Pierre stepped up when Sibert had to sit. The arena exploded on those big threes. And that triple reverse move down low late - dang that was sweet.

Bobby gave us only a few minutes, but minutes that were needed.

KD kept us in it when Rhody was hitting everything early. Hounded Matthews all night.

Baby "D' didn't do much offensively, but was able to give others a few needed minutes of rest.

It was indeed "A Great Day to be a Flyer"

I noticed the same thing. Scoochie was feeling it and I think he picked up on the difficulty that URI was having with the noise. URI was trying to call plays and having trouble. At the other end, we were running our motion which requires very little communication. The guys just make their reads and go where they are supposed to go. Archie mentioned something about that after the VCU game. He was asked about halftime adjustments. He said they decided to try calling more plays and get specific players more involved after Jordan carried them the 1st half. He said in the 2nd half, they made the adjustment, but realized it was a mistake and went back to the motion. What caught my attention was that he used the words, "I was wrong." You never find anyone thrown under the Archie bus except maybe himself.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but there's not a chance that was one of the top 2 or 3 best / loudest game environments in the last 15 years. GREAT environment last night but this was maybe top 25. Not top 5. Larry was caught up in the moment. I strongly suspect that if you asked Larry to list his top 5, he would (in retrospect) have to move that game down a few notches.

What a great chess match between coaches last night. Jordan couldn't keep up with #0, AM switched to KD who did a great job despite being undersized. They ran pick / roll with success and we countered with a strategy to double the ball, which they countered, which we countered. THANK YOU Archie for not being married to any 1 strategy.

On offense they were going to deny passing lanes and be really aggressive on the guards, so Archie countered by throwing the ball into the post nearly every possession. No double teams meant we racked up fouls and layups.

The game was much closer than the score indicates. Had AM not won the chess match at about the 10:00 mark of the second half we easily could have lost.

All you needed to watch to verify this was Pollard in the 2nd half...He's clearly the most aggressive, and athletic, player on the team and most of the time has his way in the post and beating guys to the bucket. As they were running motion and taking the air out of the ball there were ample opportunities he could have split the D and taken it to the hole. In fact, he squared up a couple of times as if he was going to but back off, took a dribble or two back, and passed the ball...He knew the team concept here..
