2018 Recruiting and beyond
The current recruiting thread is getting a little long in the tooth and pretty much covers our incoming freshmen. Who are our targets for 2018 and beyond?

In 18 we only have 1 scholarship open to replace DD, unless we get lucky one of the end of benchers moves on. Hope Arch is highly selective.

Is this unusual to have such unbalanced player counts by grade? Next year 6 freshman, 5 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 1 senior?

I mentioned this name in another thread, but UD is taking a very close look at Andre Gordon from Sidney. Averaging 20.1 points and 5.9 assists per game. 6'1 with a 42" vertical. He is actually a 2019 recruit though, not 2018 like I said before. OSU and WV supposedly very interested so far as well. From what I am being told, he may very well end up being one of the top recruits in the country, would be real nice to keep him close to home! Go get him Archie

UD has offered 6'5" shooting guard Antwann Jones from Oak Ridge High School in Orlando,FL. If you watch his you tube videos he is a real stud but he is a four or five star recruit and will be hard to beat out the Power 5 conferences for his services.

Here is the link to john huston's recruiting website. UD has a very limited number of scholarship offers out as you might expect

It's certainly not something you shoot for, but in today's mobile basketball society, it's more common than it used to be. Coaches have more ways to add talent with the high number of transfers, the 5th year grad student thingy, Europe, Canada, Australia, et. al.
Then I also think the higher in the talent food chain you go, the more likely a Freshman with a dozen games under his belt plays like a Sophomore and indeed could be gone after the Junior year.
IMO it's just not the same focus as years past.

Once Sam Miller transfers and Jaaron Simmons joins, we will have 2 ships open after next year.

Way to go Archie, if we don't at least aim high we'll never have a chance for these kids.

Dayton has an offer out to 6'9" Revere HS (near Cleveland) junior Pete Nance. He is the son of former NBA player, Larry Nance. A very skinny kid, think X Williams as a junior in high school, he has good inside and outside skills. Nance also has offers from Florida, OSU, UNC, WV, PU and UM, and has taken unofficial visits to ND, Purdue and OSU.

His daughter, Casey, played for the UD women's team. He had another son who played at Wyoming, I believe.

Yes, Larry Jr played at Wyoming and was drafted. I think he is a Laker.

Here is some description from the Cleveland PD on Pete Nance. Purdue coach was there last night. I did not realize his brother, who UD recruited and played at Wyoming, is on the Laker's roster.
"At times the second half was a show between Moore and Nance. The Revere star whose brother plays for the Lakers and whose father starred for the Cavs had 22 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. He often would bring the ball up the court against intense pressure and handled it quite well. On one play in particular, Nance came out of nowhere to block a Benedictine shot, grabbed the rebound, dribbled the ball up the court against a full court man-to-man defense and then swished a pull-up jumper from the right elbow."

I was baffled when UD didn't recruit Larry Jr. Turns out I was right for once. Late bloomer but dude was/is a stud. Sounds like Dayton learned from that mistake. Hope we get Pete!

I always paid attention to Nance at Wyoming, not only b/c of the highlight reel dunks, but b/c I thought it was a mistake that UD didn't recruit him harder. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I always got the sense that he would have committed to UD, but UD went a different direction, that may have been Archie's first year when the 2 kids out of Detroit opted for Providence and Iowa St (and eventually Oakland). B/w Nance's sister and father, you had to assume he had the genes and the drive to be at least decent, and he obviously turned out great, I'd venture that Peter will be at worst decent, and perhaps great.

Why are we always fighting Purdue and Michigan for recruits? It was down to us and Purdue for Big Steve, and a couple guys Michigan has stolen from us.

Recruiting networks. A few years ago it was Providence that was in on every recruit we were in on. It's about knowing AAU coaches and other regional influencers that either tip you off to a recruit or allow you access to the recruit. Pretty sure this is where the bag man are pivotal.
Love the idea of bringing the youngest Nance on board. Seems like a high floor, high ceiling recruit. At worst, he's an athletic big.
