What game was it last year where they called it an act-of-shooting 3-pt foul? Thank God that didn't happen here.

Whewwww.........not a pretty game but a big win. Good to see their free throw shooting come back in the second half. Will have to shoot better all around tomorrow night though.
Wins aren't always the prettiest this early in the season, I'm just happy they pulled it out. Bring on Marquette, I expect a better performance tomorrow.
Go Flyers!!!

Nice
What can I say but WOW...this may be a special year folks. How many teams can do what UD just did. Go 0-23 from 3 3 for 14 FT's in the 1st half and then when it matters hit their last 15 FT's and just plain and simple gut out a win on a night they played horrible. Way to go guys...bring on Marquette.

Fugly doesn't begin to describe this. But how sweet it is to actually win a game at the charity stripe. Gotta hope this was one of those offensive performances you just have to get out of your system.

Is this only the 2nd game ever without making a 3 since it became available? I remember Grambling a few years ago without one, but that's it.

If I'm not mistaken, we had a long streak going where we made at least one 3-pointer a game. Something like 440+ games in a row.
We broke that streak!

Hey Bill, You have been saying, and I have been agreeing with you for the last couple games, that it's our defense that will save us when nothing else is working. Tonight was the perfect example.
Our Frosh got the first one under their belt away from the arena, and man it was a tuff one.
Why didn't Luke play more tonight? Can anybody say? I missed the first half, had family over. Did something happen to him, or did he play bad? I don't think he got in at all in the 2nd half.

Ugly, but Gritty
Making our last 13-15 FTs is key. Should not win a game that you shoot that poorly. This team has heart!!!!

Why didn't Luke play more tonight? Can anybody say? I missed the first half, had family over. Did something happen to him, or did he play bad? I don't think he got in at all in the 2nd half.

Well, he took a few threes and the threes just didn't seem to be working for ANYONE, so maybe BG wanted more driving scorers in.

I just don't think that BG felt comfortable with Luke in the game if he wasn't scoring. How about LW hitting a big three point play down the stretch? Free throw shooting in the second half was the difference.

I'm going to have to keep a defribillator with me if we have more games like this one. I think my pulse was about 120.
The Good news: A "W" baby.
Now they can put this fugly game behind them, shake it off, and focus on Marquette. No way do the Flyers go without making a 3 pointer tomorrow. Just like they weren't going down tonight, they might just be falling like rain tomorrow.
Go Flyers!

Could it have been that he is 1 for his last 9 three pointers??
It defies logic that with Luke in a mini slump, and the team as whole shooting 0-for-Friday, that Luke would come in and light up the town. There was something in the Hoffman Estates water that got us.

Outrebounded them 50-33 with 16 Offensive boards. Shoot 20-31 free throws (forget the first half) to their 12 -26. Marcus was 8-8, CW 2-7. We go 0-24 - THAT IS ZERO FOR 24 - from three, they go 7-31. We have 15 TO's they have 20. Moral of the story is play defense, rebound, and shoot free throws. Crazy.

I undertand what you're saying. Like I said, I missed the entire first half, and didn't know if he even got in at all in the 1st half.
I was wondering if he was hurt. The last game I saw him holding on to his wrist because he hurt it going after a loose ball. So I thought maybe they were holding him out.

Forget the water, it had to be the air! What is the elevation of Chicago? Had to be thin air.

Only 25 - that puts it back to 1983. Dr. Naismith would have been "dudified".

Now all we need is NIU to take Marquette to quintuple overtime before losing.

We actually broke that streak several years ago. I'll go looking for it, but I'm confident that tonight did not break the extensive 3-pt fg made in games streak

If I were BG, I'd burn the game stats in front of the team in the locker room. Win and get away with a victory, same result if we would have beat them by 20.

You were there??? Come on, tell us more! It sounded over the radio that the crowd was mostly UD fans. Is that so?
Was our defense as sticky and intense as previous nights?
What was wrong with our shooting? Bucky and Larry were saying that we missed alot of wide open shots.

Doesn't look like it, Swamp. Marquette up 25-8 with 8:30 to go in the first half.

the numbers to the game remind me of how the Bearcats used to win about 15 years ago with Huggy Bear, He had some teams that couldn't shoot a lick but they survived by defense and rebounding.
Mostly UD fans. I think I saw 4 Auburn fans.
Flyers couldn't hit even when they got an open look, and not a single trey was close to going to going in, no rim outs, nothing. It was brick after brick.
Kurt was hopeless in the post as well. It was all defense and rebounding.
Flyers rushed a lot of offense. They could get penetration but only off a ball reversal and attack the weakside. Auburn did a great job of stopping penetration unless the Flyers made them move and then reversed the ball.

There is no truth to the rumor that should Dayton win the Chicago Invitational Tournament that the trophy they will be presented with will depict a naked Rosie O'Donnell hoisitng a shot from beyond the three point line.

Dayton beats Auburn 60-59 in OT (Rival's wrap-up)
Also, I saw this in a message on the DDN blog:

The Flyers 24 missed 3 pointers set a NCAA record for most 3 point shots attempted in a game without a make. Previous record was 22 by Canisious against St. Bonaventure in 1995. I’ll bet Canisious didn’t win that game!

swish, in re to why fab didnt play much...i was wondering the same thing.
all i could think of was his defense is less than stellar. in a game where a bucket seemed more like 3 buckets gregory probably didnt want luke to give up any easy ones. just a guess.
along those lines though, another chicago guy, mickey perry didnt seem to get many minutes. i thought he should have gotten more action. he could have given us some life on O while still playing stellar D.

wow...looking at the box score gregory really trimmed down the rotation in tonights game. little played 30 mins, wright 36, kurt 32, and johnson 33.
big games on the glass by chuck and wright and little had 3 assists (thats alot when it seems like there were 8 total field goals made). chris wright had 0 assists and 6 turnovers. ouch.

I know CW had 6 turnovers, but...he also had 16 rebounds. Those are Perryman type numbers.
What was driving me crazy this game was that every time I turned around, I'm hearing that KH got stripped again, or he fumbled the ball out of bounds, or missed the tap in. From what it sounded like he really struggled.
Why is a big strong guy like him allowing these little fellers around him to strip the ball?

I was at the game also. And I hung around to scout Marquette afterward. I left at halftime.
UD Notes:
1. Oh my was that ugly. Mostly because we couldn't hit literally anything from outside, and second because Auburn struggled as well.
2. Chris Wright must have had 13 rebounds in the first half.
3. Auburn was big and physical, but not very talented. That is what you probably could not detect on the radio. They all had bodymass like Charles Little, and they were good athletes. It was extremely physical inside. That is why Kurt struggled. It was a sumo match under the hoop.
4. This absolutely proves the point that defense can keep you in any game. We left a few wide open 3's but only after a lot of rotations and good passing by Auburn. Overall, the defense was very good.
5. That seemed a tough place to shoot, with nothing behind the baskets but empty space, but then Marquette came in and started lighting it up from 3. So, so much for that theory.
6. Stephen Thomas kept us alive offensively in the first half.
7. London warren played a nice game, IMO. Hit on a few driving lay-ups and was causing them lots of problems on defense.
Marquette Notes:
1. They are quicker than we are on defense. And they make clean picks for steals.
2. They play hard and go to the glass hard, even with their small size.
3. They are a lot like us, but with "lights out" 3pt shooting.
4. You would think they are weak inside, but they have some guys who are very active and athletic inside. They D up well even with the height disadvantage inside.
5. We can compete with them, and maybe pull offf a win if we shoot significantly better.
6. Our guards will be harshly tested with their ball security. No lazy passes. We will not win the boards battle like a walk in the park. They go hard to the glass as a team. And they are quick.
7. I expect a very entertaining game, with Marquette wanting to push the pace off of steals. They want a higher pace than we do, IMO.

We better stay on their three point shooters and quit sagging and helping when there is no need to sag or help.

I agree. And don't leave Jerel McNeal. That guy is just deadly from outside. Problem is, he can drive to the hoop too. And steals everything close to him. He is a tremendous player.
