Nice Win
Everyone complains after a win that no one has anything to say....
Keys to this great road win...
Scott's toughness in the paint was crucial for UD. It got the Zags in fouls trouble and at a point when UD was really soft in the first half, he didn't back down. I honestly believe he set the tone for the entire team tonight/this morning.
DMO with some very aggressive moves to get to the bucket. Fairly quiet, but he was selective and it paid off. Tough on the defensive end.
Vee forced a handful of shots, but he needs to hang in there. He will win us games this year, and even when he doesn't score...he is a huge threat on the oppositions radar as far as scouting.
Sibert is the clutch player that we have needed for some time. Dare I say a quiet 23 points? He just gets it done.
Pierre didn't shoot well, but he is a matchup nightmare. Guy is unorthodox as all get out, and will kill a guy on D. Great showing and he had busy hands on D which was just as important as his offensive effort.
Pollard had a very nice showing. For a guy that looked out of sorts so far, he looked very good tonight and looked as if he was playing for time. Aggressive and used his body to his advantage. For someone that I personally thought wasn't going to contribute much this year, he made me eat crow...I do think he will have some more very productive games this season.
Kavanaugh needs to be benched in favor of Scott. I don't care that he had to come out against their best players. Scott did just fine against a whole slew of them. If you want ot be the starter, play like the starter, and hold your own against the opponents best players. That is your job. He is a hot mess right now. It isn't that he is missing shots...he looks like a freshman practicing varsity right now. He needs to get his head out of the sand or he will be sitting next to Zesterman....wait a minute...Zesty graduated.
Smith will be a good player and did what he needed to do during his minutes. He needs to slow down and let the game come to him and I think his skillset with come through even more.
AM made nice adjustments at the half defensively. It is a breath of fresh air to finally see changes made when things aren't going well.
This tightly of an officiated game is going to happen more often than not this year. It appears that it will work to our favor when we hit free throws. The guys need to stop ball...and continue to play the post tough. Offensively, we moved the ball well, crashed well, spaced well, and got good perimeter shots off of penetration and ball movement.
This team is going to surprise some people. I have said it for months...it is a good time to be off the radar. Because I honestly believe, they are going to be on the radar for a good portion of this season.
Great win.....time to go to work tomorrow.

Our guards have outstanding hand quickness. Those are seasoned, top-tier guards we went against tonight and we got many tips and steals from our young guns. And, they are usually in the right position.
We have struggled against head-to-head drives where a guy just puts his head down, but on team defense we look passable when Scott is playing center.

Team played with resolve and were in attack mode the 2nd half. The only time they struggle on offense is when they get passive.
Really pleased with Pollard. Although having seen him numerous times last year he is a consummate team player. No forced shots, good defender who is willing to let the game come to him. Young guys have been improving by leaps and bounds and when you mix in Sibert this team is starting to look very good.

Great win.
I did not expect them to win this one, I picked against Dayton in the prediction thread. I'm glad I was wrong.
If they play like they played tonight, they will be able to beat a lot of teams.
IMO, tonight they looked like a potential NCAA tournament team.
Great job hanging in there after a tough first half. Defense was much better in the second half: the Flyers really shut down Gonzaga's inside game, and it seemed that Dayton did not foul as much in the 2nd half.
Dayton also shot lights out in the 2nd half. I think Jay Bilas and Sean McDonough said something like Dayton shot 61% in the second half.
Free throw shooting needs to improve though.
I would like to see Dayton attack the zone more though instead of shooting so many 3 pointers, but Dayton made their 3 pointers in the 2nd half.
Need to do a better job of defending against dribble penetration also.
But hey, they won, that's the bottom line!!!
I'm glad I stayed up to watch.
GREAT JOB FLYERS!!!

Many of us saw this potential coming. We have a ton of depth at every position which we didn't have last year. We won't wear down like last year at end of games. Actually, we are wearing down our opponents. Great win. I almost nailed the score too (had 84-81).

This team validated my belief. Despite the way we played in the first game against IPFW, I could tell we were very talented. They could have folded up the tent down 16 against a very good Gonzaga team. Believe

This team totally shredded Gonzaga's zone very late in the first half, and continuing on into the second.
Maybe you should read that again: we totally shredded a zone defense.
To Archie: I'm sorry I doubted you so much after the IPFW game, and even well into this game. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.
WE SHREDDED A ZONE DEFENSE!!!!

Price and Sibert have the potential to be the best 1-2 punch I've seen in my lifetime as a Flyer fan. Many of us (me) came into the season questioning our guard play, but these guys are getting the job done.
Until last night, I struggled to find a reason to put Pollard on the floor. It didn't take long to get some answers. He single-handedly took control of the game for a moment.
Who thought we would dominate the boards against Gonzaga's huge front line? I attribute much of this to Scott. He's really starting to find his groove. Great to see. Now if only Robinson and Vee would dial in.
To me, the difference between this game and GT versus the other more "questionable" performances was team energy. We lacked it in the first half, and look how it went. The second the guys kicked it in high gear, Gonzaga didn't have an answer. I have a feeling most teams we play would suffer the same fate if we can continue to play with that kind of intensity. I don't mind seeing some elevated turnover numbers (though I'd rather not) when you are pushing and attacking to the point where you literally scramble the other team's game. We flat out went after them.
Final comment - Pangos is a bonafide top-nation player. Wow! I'll be watching him...
Now, be ready for a tough Baylor team! Go UD!

Some early morning thoughts.
Glad I didn't call it quits when they were down 16. I saw a lot of comments that they were playing "scared" I don't think that was the right term. Early on, I thought they suffered from paralysis by analysis, ie everyone was overthinking things, they'd get the ball then it took them an extra second to figure out what they wanted to do rather than knowing what they were going to do with the ball once they got that. That was not a problem in the 2nd half, great ball movement, great player movement w/o the ball. Seems like this team is prone to go thru stretches in games where they forget how to run Archie's offense, but once they get it cooking they light it up. Iron that out and this team is going to soar.
I've also seen a lot of comments about the poor free throw shooting and with good reason, but remember as the season rolls on you have to expect this team will have its ups and downs in all phases of the game, just like every other team. Don't be so quick to forget that this team killed it at the charity strip in Atlanta. This team will be fine there more or less. Free throw shooting obviously matters to the head coach, and he's shown that his players exhibit good free throw shooting. Bad nights happen, and all of the frosh need an offseason to work on it, but when you see the strides that Scott & Robinson have made in free throw shooting since the start of last year, I have no doubt that Schooch, Davis & Pollard will all be passable from the charity strip by the end of next season.
Depth won this game as much as anything else. Gonzaga had no one else down low beyond their starters, allowing UD to wear them down and attack the rim. Gonzaga's gaurds are not good rebounders. I think Gonzaga's best offense would be a 4 gaurd offense w/ Dowry down low. Problem is, to run a good 4 gaurd offense, you need a couple of gaurds/wings that aren't afraid to mix it up and go after a rebound. UD has been spoiled in recent years with Marcus Johnson, Chris Johnson, London Warren, Pierre, Price, Sanford, etc... all being willing to attack the rim and grab the rebound amongst the taller trees. As good as Stockten & Pangos are, they don't strike me as guys that will just go after a rebound the way Khari Price will despite similar size.
Not many teams will have the collection of shooters and ball handlers that Gonzaga has. As I said above, their best offense came when the bigs came out and they had 5 shooters on the floor at the end. UD could no longer slide help off a big man to stop pangos from penetrating the lane as it would leave a shooter wind open. Pangos made UD pay; not sure there is anyone in the A-10 that can do what Gonzaga did down the stretch.
I loved seeing Robinson show up last night. I have no idea what was going on with him early this season, but he's got a great skill set. That's as much effort and determination as I've seen him display last night. If Kavs isn't going to show up, its very important that Robinson continues the development that he did last season.
Scott continues to play great, he's going to start tonight I have no doubt and he deserves it. However, one thing I noticed is that he's often lazy getting back on the defensive end, he needs to tighten that up.
Sibert had two NBA moves, the hesitation 3 pointer over their PF and the fade away jumper. I have no idea what his future holds in terms of the league, but its easy to see why he was a top 40 recruit. Don't know what happened at OSU, but I'm glad he's at UD and displaying his considerable talent. Kid has stones, still can't believe he took that 3 w/ under a minute to go and plenty of time on the clock. That's a shot that if you take it, it better go in and it was nothing but net.
Nice adjustments vs the zone. They shreded in at the start of the 2nd half and forced them back into man2man then watched the fouls pile up. Price is hitting 50% of his 3-balls, the hard work as payed off as he's obviously has a ton of confidence knocking down an open 3 pointer from NBA range.
Another key to this win was the versatility on defense. From Oliver up to Price, the flyers gaurded all of their gaurds w/ any of their gaurds, wings & Oliver. I don't think Gonzaga was ready to have Oliver willing take on Pangos on switches and do a more than respectable job. Given the length and versatility of this team, I wonder if they would succeed w/ a matchup zone defense? Rather than hedging off screens, they could just switch defenders.

The success UD had against the Zags should put to bed any thoughts they don't have the talent to compete for an A10 crown & championship. I, from this game, expect UD to win many more games than after the first two games I saw. UD, Keep the outcomes in line (and above) your talent levels and all UD fans will be ecstatic!

coupla times we put Oliver on Pangos and i think i saw a big or two covering a guard in the second half. Great way to utilize big Devin!!
We got lazy on defense the last 1;30. Not good, when you get passive.
And the two inbounds plays were scary as hell. Didn't like the initial setup, but when you saw it executed the second time you could see what Coach Miller had planned.
WOWZER man. Hope the guys can keep bringing it!

I was so keyed up after the game and checking in here and the Zags fan boards, it was almost 4 before I tried to sleep. O M G! What a game! The Zags fans talked about how the Flyers exposed GU's "secret" weaknesses-lack of rebounding and interior defense. No one on that board had the slightest doubt that GU would win, at least by 10. So sweet to see the dismay, lol.
I just knew that if we could get the lead down to under 10 at the half, we had a good chance of pulling it out. At the end, I was screaming and jumping up and down like a crazy person! I was also remembering 10 yrs ago when my husband and I screamed and jumped around together as our beloved Flyers won the whole thing. This time he was with me in spirit, waving his magic wand up in heaven, lol.
So glad tonight's game is at a reasonable hour.
Go Flyers!

Eamonn Brennan: "You can't have seen Dayton's performance and not bumped your projections for the Flyers going forward. They were good. Very good. If they're able to control the offensive glass and knock down kickout 3s like they did Monday night, they'll give teams even better than the Zags plenty of fits in the days and weeks to come."

I love Price and Sibert, but the guard combo of Donald Smith and Johnny Davis in 1974 was the best ever.

Thank you to all the loud fans in red.
A post from their forum: " Zags played a solid first half and showed some fight in the end. I tip my hat to Dayton's crowd, they really brought it. I get that the Maui tournament draws a lot of our older fans and alumni, but I was in the Dayton line to get into the arena and their average age must've been 60. Still they completely out cheered us all game. "

You've heard of The Rosary? Get 'em out and start reelin' off decants...We'll let you know when to stop. And none of this mumblin' crap either. We want to hear every syllable...Blessed is the fruit etc. etc. etc.
We'll get back to you in time for tip-off of the Flyers/Baylor.
