You Make the Call - coach blocks own players shot

Scenario: Youth game (3rd grade?). Kid gets ball and heads wrong direction...coach doesn't want kid to score for other team so he runs on court and blocks the layup.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuAsd_Jl8Pg

Notice the title beneath the video..."Coach of the Year...".

You're the ref. Make the call!

I had a very similar situation occur in a 4th or 5th grade game last weekend! But your Majesty was able to prevent the coaching fiasco.

No poll...just tell me what SHOULD have been called...if anything.

Rollo....King of the Bench...OUT!

T up the coach for being on the floor.

Then he has to buy pizza for the team for being a putz.

1. T up the coach
2. Kick the coach out of the gym
3. Contact league and kick coach out of the league

It is coaches like this that destroy youth basketball, SMH.

To ref this age you need a sense of humor, but there's nothing funny about the anger of the coach directed at the kid. I see these idiots all year....Xenia Elite and Tipp City 3rd grade boy's coaches included. If you live in those communities, tell them the King of UDPride thinks they are a-holes and looks forward to seeing them again...and again...and again....

1st, this is 1st grade basketball, there is no over and back (not even a half court line that I could tell), there may be no steals allowed, certainly traveling and double dribbling is overlooked a vast majority of the time, yet this clown is out there wearing a tie like he's John Wooden, for that offense alone, he should be relieved of his duties (sadly there may not be another parent willing to fill the void, as is often the case across youth sports, so I commend him for that).

I think we're all being too critical of the coach here. He obviously has insane shot blocking skills and got lost in the moment. Let him be.

At this age there may be a difference in what should happen according to the rule book, and what should happen to teach these kids how to play basketball.

My guess is that the coach should get a T, but not sure that teaches the kids anything - half of them don't know what a T is.

You give the ball to the other team and tell the coach to settle down or he has to leave.

From these responses I can tell who of you has reffing in their blood and those who don't. Most of you fall into the latter category.

I think he was laughing when he did it and it was all in good fun, but maybe I can't see the actual tone of what happened. I'd call it out of bounds on the team in green and give it to red. Have a good laugh, jokingly T up the coach (not for real), and play on, they're 7.

Coaches who are out there to ensure the kids have 'fun' sit down and coach...to add on, they also don't run up and down the sidelines yelling and waving to their 7-year olds to hurry...nor do they feel the need to run onto the court and reject the shots of their players...nor do they further embarrass the kid and parents by emphatically waving off the shot after blocking it.

Coaches who want the kids to have fun high-5 the kid after making a shot at the wrong basket.

And I say that from experience.

I have coached youth sports for a long time (with some refereeing in there as well). I couldn't agree more.

At that age it's not about winning. Not trying to get on the "participation trophy" train...I do think you should keep score and there should be a winner and loser, but as a coach I don't care about winning at that age. At that age you are trying to accomplish 2 things:

1. Develop basic skills (dribbling, shooting, passing, etc)
2. Develop a love for the game

By running out there and swatting the kid because he went the wrong way is not going to help that kid develop a love of the game.

No reffing experience

I think I would have T'd up the coach, counted the basket and reported him to the league. He shouldn't be coaching.

I coached soccer for kids at this age, and I couldn't stop laughing when they would get turned around and go the wrong way.

My biggest challenge was getting some of them to play "offense" and forget about defense (no goalies at that age - small net).

Me and my assistant coach dressed this well for one youth game, our daughters last home game playing 6th grade Dayton Metro travel ball. Our kids and parents got a big kick out of it, the other teams parents probably thought we were idiots!

Truth be told, I was hoping for a moment to take off my coat and throw it. But I behaved, Rollo was not the ref.

In the above video, the ref should have called 'over-and-back' which would have made everything else not happen. Yeah, there isn't a half court marked, but that shouldn't matter. Varsity summer league games at Trent are played across the main court, have no midcourt line and we still estimate where it is and enforce it. Common sense.

Since the ref in the video didn't call over-and-back, they now have no choice to 'T' up the coach, who by Rule isn't allowed on the court unless summoned. So at the very least, a 'T' should be given.

Had the Royal and Golden Ref witnessed that BS, he'd have given the idiot a 'T' for being on the court and another 'T' for unsportsmanlike conduct...which would have lead to an ejection. What an idiot!

Take today for instance. The Golden Ref walks into a gym only to find out he's reffing a 3rd grade girl's game coached by none other than Shocka! And guess what happens in the 2nd half....you got it...a girl got confused and took off the wrong way! Not one coach stood up and attempted to block her shot...not one. Probably because we called over-and-back but even if we hadn't I didn't see coaches on either side getting ready to sprint on the court and make an a-hole of themselves.

FWIW, Shocka's daughter was almost the hero. She hit a FT in the 4th qtr to put her team up 17-16 and at that time I was convinced that would be the final score and she'd be the hero...but it wasn't meant to be as the opponent hit 2 late shots to send the Shocka's home with an 'L', 20-17. Great game...bad ending.

Golden Ref Rollo....OUT!
