12 A-10 teams kick off their season tonight, all are double digit favorites including OOC opponent @ Bona.
Oakland is a 19 point dog @ OSU
Youngstown St is a 4 point dog at Louisanna, all other OOC opponents appear to be clear favorites tonight (though some are against D2 teams)

A10 went 11-1 tonight. Even though its against creampuffs, 11-1 for this league is legend status.

#23 St. Mary's beats Stanislaus State 107-28. Hard to even imagine what an 80 point win looks like.
Maybe the Flyers vs my intramural team in 1965, "Tessie Gardella's Beaver Shooters". (We tried to be comic relief in the intramural league until we were threatened to be kicked out, and then we picked up a friend of a friend, a former high school starting guard and actually won one game. In the old UH hangar.)

Ahhhh, the old UH hangar. I majored in pickup ball there my freshman year and my GPA reflected that fact.

To former disgraced coach Will Wade, no less, he of the "strong ass offer" amid FBI wire taps at LSU.
https://mcneesesports.com/sports/men...roster-coaches
Why in the sweet name of Jehovah do you schedule that game if you're VCU? First game for your new coach, Baldwin left with Rhoades ... talk about the quintessential trap game.
Imagine if Archie left Indiana amid scandal and landed at an HBCU. Think we're taking his call for a buy game? I hope the answer is HELL NAW.
Anyone think that Coach Wade has seen the light and become a strict rule follower? If anything, with nothing to lose, he's more emboldened now. And to think he started as a student manager under the very respectable Oliver Purnell at Clemson.

Good Ol' King Wenceslas State ...
https://warriorathletics.com/sports/...ketball/roster
How embarrassing to even schedule that game (DII). Remember when we toppled St Joseph (IN) 91-59 on 12/6/16? IIRC that was a date we couldn't secure another D-I buy opponent. That school proceeded to close the following Spring:

How about a 69 point blowout, San Francisco 128-59 over Bethesda. Bethesda has a 25 man roster, unfortunately the rule limiting you to 5 players on the court at any one time still applies. Maybe 5 against 8 would have been a better game.

The school has less than 400 students and would probably not be ranked among top LA high school teams. Nothing of value learned here.

DePaul loses its home opener to Purdue- Ft. Wayne 82-74. I watched about 5 minutes of the game. DePaul’s new arena was about 10-15% full. DePaul doesn’t like to play defense. Looks like a long season (again).
FWIW, at some point, PFW dropped the Indiana from their name and is no longer IPFW. I don’t know if IUPUI has dropped one of their initials? I hope not… IUI would sound like a promissory note, PUI would sound like defecation. Given the state of higher education at many schools, perhaps one or the other is appropriate.

It's Wednesday 11/8, and a lot of games are still warmup matches against D2 competition:
SLU hosts Lincoln MO at 8:00 PM on ESPN+
But some matches have Division I teams against other DI teams and some are expected to be competitive games:
FAU #10 @ Loyola Chicago - 7:00 PM (FAU -6.5)
W Illinois @ SMU - 7:00 PM on ESPN+ (SMU -18.5)
Troy @ Ohio - 7:00 PM on ESPN+ (Ohio -7.5)
Southern @ UNLV - 10:00 PM (UNLV -21.5)

W Ill 53
SMU 90
Lincoln MO 66
Saint Louis 102
#10 FAU 75
Loyola Chi 62
Troy 70
Ohio 88
Southern 85
UNLV 71
Two of these teams, Troy and UNLV visit the Flyers in early December. Based on these results, the Flyers will need to get wins. Southern over UNLV in Las Vegas seems like a surprise. SMU still looks like a quality opponent. The Mustangs play again today. Loyola played alright against #10 FAU, but not good enough for a victory.
Beyond Dayton's opponents;
Lipscomb 70
Drake 85
Arizona St 56
Mississippi St 71

And you could blame David Bell, too, and probably be more correct than any of the other choices.

Davidson and Duquesne look very good to me. Duquesne especially, IMO. They have a well rounded team with all the pieces. We are not the clear favorite in the A10, IMO. I expect the league to be better than I hoped this year. Northwestern was a disappointing result for out at-large resume, but I am beginning to think that the A10 might give us some opportunity for good wins.

The A10 is 20-3 after yesterday. Two of the losses are to #10FAU (@Loyola) and @Northwestern (UD). The only inexplicable loss is VCU losing to McNeese St.
In years past, middling A10 teams lose to the StoneyBrook, Bryant, and other MEAC, America East, Patriot, and North East conference type schools which kills the A10. SO FAR, that hasn’t happened!
Today, A10 schools play powerhouses such as Cornell, William & Mary, Northeastern (are they in the North East conference?), Canisus, Siena, and Eastern Ill. Six winnable games if the A10 wants to finish as 8th or 9th best conference.

Is scoring up this year? Fifteen teams last night scored 100 or more, including St Joe's, who put up 100 on someone called Stonehill. Of course most of these were against really weak opponents.
LaSalle, RI, GW and St Joe all go to 4-0, but Loyola goes to 1-2 with a loss to UIC. Oh what did we expand with?

It might be a rough year for OSU, they lost to Torvik #157 Abilene Christian at OSU 64-59 in their season opener. Good win for SBU nonetheless.

Games of Note
UMass - Lowell (remember them?) playing a buy game in Tempe, Arizona had Arizona State on the ropes: 65-54 with 2:16 left in the game. Then the Sun Devils pulled a UD and closed the game on an insane 17-4 run for a 69-71 victory.

Sincere Carry (SP?) at SLU (and formerly Fordham) broke his foot yesterday they said on the broadcast of their game today), didn't say how long he will be out, but I assume it will be a few weeks at a minimum if not season ending.
SLU is down 15 to Vermont with about a minute to go.
The difference in the crowds b/w what I saw yesterday and today at the Myrtle Beach Classic games with SLU playing and what I saw yesterday on the other side of the state w/ UD playing is like night and day.

The A-10 reverted to the norm tonight, going 3-5.
UMass lost to Harvard in OT, Davidson lost by 2 at ETSU, and St Joe's lost to Texas A&M Commerce by 3 (despite Lynn Greer's 13 points).
The A-10 is now 39-14 on the season.

Why in the world did Davidson schedule #298 ETSU as a true non-con road game? Talk about deviating from the formula!

I can remember bits and pieces of watching that game in the 1972-73 season on the B&W TV in our living room with my sister and parents. I remember thinking that, for a team from a big city, they sure played in a tiny, little gym.

Squeaking by
The A-10 went 4-1 today, with the only loss being Rhode Island vs Northwestern (62-71).
The four wins, though, were by a combined 12 points.
The conference now stands 43-15 on the season.

They likely thought ETSU might be a q1 or q2 road game IMO. Over the last 16 years, ETSU has been a q1 road game once, and a q2 road game 6 times. They were 3 spots short of being a q2 road game a 7th time. So, almost half of the time they were a q1 or q2 road game.
Scheduling is tough, they probably thought rolling the dice on trying to get a q1 or q2 road game out of playing at ETSU was worth it.
If you can't beat #298 on the road, then scheduling is the least of your problems.

Worth noting that LSU won their last 2 games and SJ won today too so both went 2-1. Hopefully we make it 3 teams in a row that go 2-1.

Welp…I can get rid of the “so far” qualification. The conference went 0-5 today, and 4 of those losses were NOT to the #6 team in the country. OUCH!

The December 1951 and 1954 UD wins as well as the 1958 and 1963 losses would have all been in the very prestigious Holiday Festival, one of the best in season tournaments.
The March 1950 and 1957 UD wins were all NIT victories. The 1962 UD win was for UD's first NIT championship.

Great semi in Maui tonight as #2 Purdue plays #7 TN and #1 KS plays #4 Marquette.
Last night St Joe lost to UK in overtime and Richmond gave #18 Colorado a close game, 64-59.
Upset special tonight as undefeated LaSalle plays at Duke.

Purdue wins the foul fest, 51 total fouls, and Marquette beats #1 KS by 73-69. Shaka made a great move. And so did Tyler Kolek, who transferred from George Mason. Purdue vs Marquette tonight.
LaSalle gets destroyed by Duke 95-66. Richmond beats UNLV 82-65 and Davidson wins big over BU 69-45.

Need SLU to hold serve tomorrow at home. They are 5.5 point dogs to USU. I trust Loyola to handle Chicago State.

Seth towns is in his 8 year of college, possibly we can call him a Doctor by seasons end
UC played at Howard because they wanted to play at a HBC, plus take in the things in/around DC. I don't know if they get a return game at all, or how the arrangement is finalized, according to their coach it all came together pretty late when UC was looking for 1 more game and Howard as the best option for the dates they had.
Honestly, I wish more college basketball teams would do similar things. Play a road game at a school a level or two below what their own level and challenge themselves in what I assume was a hostile venue ready to get a big home win.

The A-10
is at 68-33 after a good showing tonight.
Two Big Five Classic matches tonight (sorry Drexel):
LaSalle lost to Temple in triple overtime, but St Joe's easily handled #18 Villanova .
With wins by the Flyers, Davidson. George Mason, and Duquesne and a loss by Richmond the conference went 5-2 tonight and 19-7 since Thanksgiving.

Texas A&M Commerce is SMU's next opponent. Would be interesting to see how that game plays out, and how SMU and St. Joe compare against a common opponent.

One note about St. Joe's: perhaps their play should not come as a surprise, I heard during the Nova broadcast that they were 4th (or something close to that) in the country in minutes returning.
Huge night for non-con opponents:
Houston @ X
St. John's @ WVU
SE Louis. @ LSU
Edwardsville @ Troy (this one doesn't really matter since we play both)
Purdue @ NW
A10:
GW @ USC (Gamecocks are undefeated thus far)
Norfolk State @ VCU

Houston goes into Norwood and escapes with a 66-60 victory.
Thankfully I only watched the last 15 minutes of the game as this was quite ugly and tough to watch. Zero flow to the game that felt as though whistle was blowing every 10 seconds. Houston was 3 for 18 from the field in the last 15 minutes of the game. Combined field goal percentage of 33% with 50 fouls and 28 turnovers combined, most of which I think I witnessed in the little I watched.

Northwestern wins! After we lost, there were some who downplayed Northwestern and said they are not a tournament team. How ya’ like ‘em now?

I watched Saint Louis a few times early in the year. They do look awful. They just cannot shoot, among other things. They might be the worst offensive team I have seen in years.

Clearly our A10 brethren don’t share our scheduling philosophy. Some real non-con clunkers.
Davidson already lost at ETSU (200+)
ST Bona won on the road at 1-7 Buffalo (MAC)
Wright State lost at Davidson
Anyone know if Davidson will/did return the game at Wright State? If it’s a buy game, they need to quit hassling us about a series.

Travis Ford needs to go. Chris Mooney seems to be holding back Richmond. Young McKillop struggling to fill dad’s shoes, and poor early returns on Ryan Odom at VCU.

Looks like it was a home and home. Davidson won at Wright State 102-97 in double overtime last year.
ETSU is usually a q2 game if the game is at ETSU.

If you want to know how something like this happens, SIU shot 18-29 from three point range and finished the game with an effective FG% of .821%. You are going to outscore the 1984 Celtics with those numbers.
Hot shooting hides a multitude of sins. SIU lost by 30 earlier in the week to Indiana State because they didn't shoot EFG 82% from the field.

Two wins in the Big 5 for the A-10 tonight.
La Salle 2-1 in the Big 5 with wins over Drexel and Penn (loss to Temple).
St. Joe's 3-0 to win the championship. Wins over Villanova, Penn, and Temple.

So, you’re saying their offense is offensive?
If this keeps up, there’ll probably be a new face prowling the sideline at SLU before next Christmas. I can’t imagine they’ll accept real mediocrity for very long.

Understood, and agreed. In SLU’s case, though, I don’t think they’ve had a good shooting team since the last of Majerus’s recruits graduated nearly a decade ago. They might have a good shooter or two in any given season (Ex. Jimerson), but as a whole, they belong to the Local Ironworkers 427 (as in, 4-27 from the field, drawing nothing but iron).

The A-10
Did well yesterday: 9-2, now 78-38 on the season (counting today's Fordham loss).
By comparison, the BE is 53-27 this year.

#18 Villanova won the Battle 4 Atlantis . . .
The Battle for Philadelphia? Not so much
I expect there will be some new teams in the rankings this week - ranked teams went 11-6 Friday & Saturday.

SMU was up 30 (!) at the half on that Texas Commerce school that somehow knocked off St. Joe’s. Now close to 40 late in the second half.
