Well that's an uninspiring field, but for a UD team that will have several new starters that may be a good thing.

Not a great field, but not awful either. Auburn is going to start getting better with Bruce Pearl coaching there. Indiana State should actually be pretty good next year. They are real young and their leading scorer is only a Jr. They will only be losing a starting PG and backup C. Old Dominion is always a decent team. We all know about Ohio and Temple. The real wildcard of this event is Clemson. Their coach could finally get his game against Dayton.

Planning on going to this if my wife, who is in education, can get a couple days off work for this. I've been a UD fan since birth, since my Dad played there and both my parents went there, but I went to Ohio U. Funny as it sounds, I'd be rooting for Dayton if they played OU

If you have not been to Charleston, it is one of the best towns in the USA. Great food and drinks, great shopping, great houses and a great setting.

Seems to me that Charleston next year is a good fit for the newbies we will have, especially that early in the season. Arch's goal will always be the NCAA, but he's also a realist.
There are some posters on here that predict our demise every time we graduate a class. I don't buy into that. Archie knows how to fill the pipeline. That said, next season would have been my last choice to take a young squad to the Maui Classic in November for instance.

What about golf courses, yea probably a dumb question given the location, but if anyone knows the top few in the area to play for the money, list them please as this could be another great road trip to make.

South Carolina is saturated with golf courses. Premium courses such as the Ocean Course on Kiawah; super pricey about 45 minutes away to many good public courses.
There are a number of good courses in the Charleston area. A lot of courses overseed in November however.
In 2012, it was cold and rainy in Charleston during the tournament. A little unusual.
The arena is very nice. 5,000 seats or so. Nice layout. Great location.

Kiawah has 5 great resort courses but are really pricey. Ocean Course is about $385 and the other 4 are between $185-225.
Some of my other favorites include
Stono Ferry ($50ish) has great views of the intercostal on the back nine. This is the home course of the College.
Charleston National ($70ish) was built through a marsh and has some really pretty holes.
Wild Dunes Harbor Course($80-100). They have two courses out here but I like Harbor the best for it's views.
The only courses that aren't a 40+ minute drive from downtown are Patriots Point and Shadowmoss. I like Patriots ($80ish) but I think it is pricey for what it is, but I guess that's what you get for being close to downtown. I think Shadowmoss ($40ish)is a good course for the price but theres no spectacular scenery like the others. There is also the Muni but I couldn't recommend it.

I would love to play Kiawah, but with those prices x 2 golfers for 3 or 4 days, no thanks. The others you mentioned are just what I am looking for. Many hidden gems out there if you talk to the locals, that do not have the big name recognition, but are kept in just as nice of shape with just as nice of scenery for a fraction of the price. Heck, I played Pebble a few years back, and it was in the worse condition of any of the courses I played that week in the Monteray area. When no tournament in town for 6 months, they do not keep them as pristine as you see on TV. THANKS for the list, already printed it out to save for next season!

You bet. Hit me up if you have any other questions about courses, or anything else in the area for that matter.
I should also mention that some of the courses have an option for online tee times which typically offer a discount on rates.

A group of us frequent Santee every year and we are never disappointed. Packages
go for around $350 for (4) 18 hole rounds and (4) hotel nights with breakfast.
There are 6 to 8 courses to choose from including Orangeburg Country club
( which I recommend ), a great Links course near Charleston where I think I
set the record for lost balls, and other fine courses in the Lake Santee area.
It's a drive to Charleston, but I would do it in a heartbeat. Packages get cheaper
as the season wanes. I believe we will schedule this tourney for our trip that year.
We are known as FIFO's there. F**kin Idiots from Ohio.

The Ocean Course can be six of the most miserable hours you will ever spend on a golf course. If the wind is blowing you could go through two dozen balls u less you are a single digit handicap who can flight it low.

Another underwhelming field, i don't remember it being this poor. Wasn't Maryland supposed to be in this field? Or is that the next year we are in a field with them? And i thought Battle 4 Atlantis was in play for 2018? Im very confused. Where's THirt when you need him, i remember him posting like the next 2-3 years exempt tourneys schedules along with committed participants.

Participants tend to change for various reasons. A lesser field is probably a good thing for next year.

Hopefully this leads up to an epic Battle 4 Atlantis field with our current Sophs as Seniors and our epic incoming class as Sophs. Next year may be tough but we got alot of promise moving forward. With Archie at the helm i rule nothing out.

I don't know much about the quality of the teams in the tournament: Auburn, Clemson, Dayton, Hofstra, Indiana State, Old Dominion, Ohio and Temple.
However, with our young, inexperienced team, it looks like the competition may be a good way for them to ease into the season and understand the quality of competition we will be playing against.

I think this is one of those rare times things fall into place. This isn't a great tournament lineup. It's "ok" in my opinion. And, because we have so many unknowns and lots of "new" that this is looking to be a pretty smart scheduled tournament for this year's team.
I can play a lot of sides of the coin. If we go into Charleston and dominate every game, we will know we are ahead of the curve with this team and we will be looking at a run to win the A-10.
We go into Charleston and win the tournament, but are pushed by a couple teams, we will have a good base of knowledge of what we need to work on to compete in the A-10.
If we go into Charleston and pick up a loss or two, we will know this team and coaching staff has work to do to compete in the A-10. And, in the last case, how quickly they can take steps forward as a team will determine if they make it back to the NCAAs.
This will be a good chance to calibrate just where this team and program stands in mid-November with all the changes in the off-season. The only downside I see is if we are so far ahead of all expectations for how good we will be, that we blow everyone we play off the court. I don't see that happening, but if the team wants to prove me wrong...go for it. I'll be happy to eat my words because it means we are headed for a great season...not just this year, but for the next couple years.

Here's what I would say:
Auburn will be a mid to bottom resident of the SEC by end of year. Bruce Pearl hasn't gotten anything going on the Plains and probably won't this year.
Clemson, everyone was shocked they kept their coach after last season, and their team is appreciably worse this season with the loss of NBA draft pick Jaron Blossomgame. They will be a bottom-third ACC team.
Hofstra will probably be a mid-table contender in the CAA, which is to say not very good.
Indiana St. finished dead last in the Missouri Valley last year, but that whole conference is losing Wichita St. and will not be a top-10 conference any longer.
Old Dominion looks like they can be an upper tier team in C-USA... which isn't saying a whole lot, but expecting a top-100 RPI finish from them is realistic.
Ohio U. is Ohio U... they are usually one of the top-4 MAC teams and should be again next year, although losing Jaaron Simmons hurts.
Temple is now a mid-to-bottom table team in the American.
All things considered, we are probably the best team in this tournament on paper, but Auburn, Clemson, and Old Dominion will be tough outs. I would not expect any of those 3 teams to be matched against each other or us in the first round of Charleston.

On paper Auburn has two returning 5-star recruits who are projected to go in the first round of the NBA draft and two top 50 players as incoming freshmen. So, on paper you are wrong.

Auburn does have some things going and will be the favorites for this tourney. They have loads of talent but last year were very young (4 freshman starters) and played bad defensively. I don't like Pearl but he is a proven coach and recruiter and I believe last year was Auburn's first winning season in almost 10 years.

Is that why they are not one of the 6 projected SEC teams in Lunardi's early bracketology?
Or maybe you are expecting some massive improvement from a team that was 321st in scoring defense, allowing nearly 80 points per game?
They will finish about 7th in the SEC, but could see them finishing as low as 10th. The top of the SEC is improved. Ohio State had a bunch of top-100 players two years ago when they played in the NIT. I don't see Pearl pulling it together.
Not saying they won't beat us, they are one of the 4 best teams in the Charleston field. But they are not a top level SEC team.

Clemson is probably the best team in the tournament on paper, as a bottom-third ACC team is still potentially a bubble team... Clemson finished something like 14th in the league last year and was in bubble talks until about 2 weeks to go.
We're probably 2nd.
Yeah, I just saw the news about Kostas. Couple that with Mikesell, and I could buy us being behind Auburn.

Count me in that Auburn could surprise some folks next year. Pearl's been accumulating talent down there.
Temple gets Josh Brown back after injury and I've seen some folks list them as a bounce back team in the AAC
All things considered with the inexperience of this team this might be a good field for the team. Ohio/Temple/ODU caliber team on a neutral court would be a good test to see where the team is

So if the games are played on paper, does Kostas play regardless of his injury?

I just think Auburn is the one team in this tourney that can beat us 6/10 times. Their talent is pretty overwhelming. Their scoring D does suck, but they force a lot of TOs and that could be troublesome because our PGs are either young or have not taken good care of the ball.
Apologies for the hostility.

I'm fascinated to see how they are going to make the bracket... Since we will face the Fighting Bruce Pearl's at the Arena after the Tourney, I fully expect us and them to be on opposite sides. But the question is which side will they put Clemson on, ours or theirs?

Clemson is going on UD's side. At least gives ESPN a chance at an ACC/SEC Final. No way they put them both on the same side of the bracket especially with UD being such an unknown quantity this year.

This tournament is 4+ months away. If Kostas doesn't play in that game something has gone terribly wrong.

all-session or game-by-game?
we're looking at traveling from cincinnati area ...
for anyone with prior experience, can you purchase (or scalp) individual game tickets, or best to buy all-session pass? will the venue sell out?
granted it's just $100 for weekend, but many games we won't care about. thanks, go flyers!

Really? It is July 12th. The tournament starts on Nov. 16. The healing time frame I have seen quoted is 3-4 months. That's almost exactly 4 months.
If he "heals" in 3 months, sure I'd expect him to play. But if it is closer to 4? There is almost no chance.

Agree, AG will not rush it. Although most of team is untested, we are deepest up front and can most afford to have Kostas sit until ready,

The bracket should be out soon, so I thought I'd take a stab at guessing it:
Auburn v Indiana St.
Ohio v Temple
Clemson v Hofstra
Dayton v Old Dominion
I could easily see Dayton switched with Auburn and/or Ohio switched with Old Dominion.

1 seed Dayton vs. 8 Hofstra
2 Temple vs. 7 ISU
3 Clemson vs. 6 ODU
4 Ohio vs. 5 Auburn
Play OU or Auburn in 2nd round and then Temple or Clemson in the final if they win, play Temple or Clemson in the 3rd place game if they lose in the 2nd round.

Our game is at 7:30 on the 16th and will be shown on ESPNU (Final Game of the Day)
If we win, sorry when we win lol, we would play at 9:30 the next day.

So you predicted we would play either ODU, Indiana St., or Ohio. Are you sure you don't want to add a few more teams to your prediction? Out of 7 teams you predicted we would play one of 3 in the first round.
Basically, your prediction was that we would not play Clemson or Temple.
But, we'll play Hofstra instead.

Of the three latest guesses for the opponents, two posters got all their projections wrong, and ud2 got one of four correct. So overall 1-11.It really is a crap shoot trying to project the opponents.

I'll need to see your "USGA Sandicap Card" for that to happen, or you can pay for my round at the Ocean Course and I'll give you 4 a side!
But in all seriousness I may actually consider going because it would be a nice golf trip and watching the UD games wouldn't interfere with golfing.

I will be there with my wife, a Clemson alum! I bet we will be one of the very few " house divided " couples attending. Just booked 2 nights at a bed and breakfast which is literally across the street from TD Arena too!
Then Saturday it will give us time to get up to Clemson and use our season football tickets before coming back Sunday for the last session!
Things could get a little touchy if we play Clemson on Friday night... we both take our teams seriously. But we have UD season tickets too so it shouldn't be too bad...i hope!
Couldn't have worked out better... maybe we'll see some of you there!

I'm a 20 index, you pay my green's fee on the Ocean Course and I'll give you a stroke a hole and play $50 front, back and total. .

I may be a bad golfer but I'm not stupid.
Quite off topic but what are your thoughts on playing these premier premier courses - Pebble, Pinehurst #2, etc. - at the prices they charge?

The course conditions, views, history, etc. are worth it in my opinion as a one time experience at each course if you have the chance to play them. The other thing is that I would not play them if I wasn't a decent/experienced golfer who keeps the ball in play because they are usually so difficult which leads bad golfers shooting horrible scores and not enjoying the experience. Picking the correct tees in relationship to your golfing skill is the key thing. There is no way the 10 handicap heroes who try to play everything from the tips and shoot 105 can enjoy their day.

I think most golfers who can break 100 can easily play Pebble - on a calm day. And it's worth the money in a once in a lifetime experience.
I also found Harbour Town very playable.
I've not played Pinehurst 2.
And I spent the most miserable day of my life on a golf course on the Ocean Course with the wind blowing at about 35 miles an hour. It seemed we had a cross wind on every hole. One of our playing partners aimed his tee shot on a par 3 nearly 30 yards right of the green, and he ended up 50 yards left of the green.

I agree about Harbour Town being playable, but it's condition can be questionable sometimes which is what I experienced.
Your Ocean Course experience mirrors mine with the wind blowing like crazy in every direction. It was the best 85 I've ever shot!

complete bracket
very winnable tournament ... Clemson #105 today in College Sports Madness, Ohio lost Jaaron Simmons. Maybe Auburn or Temple gets upset on the other side.

It is a pretty big school, 25,000, with many alumni in the area, and many others looking for an excuse to take a trip to one of America's great cities. So yes, they will draw some people. They ironically play pattycake Charleston team the Citadel on that Saturday at Clemson, so not much of a game there.

UD can't look past Hofstra in the first game. UD will probably only be a 2-3 pt favorite in that game. Hofstra has a lot of offensive weapons back and a few new transfers.

If we can't beat the Hofstra's of the world, we will have some serious problems this year.

Ideal Travel has 109 people booked.
There are something in the neighborhood of 375 booked for the pre-game event on Thursday.

But Indiana isn't actually that good. They can't score, they don't play any defense, their coaches wife complains about refs & fans on twitter, and their coach is afraid to go after big time recruits!

I actually think the Sycamores are a solid team. I just couldn't pass up the chance to mock IU

...and I would do that without regards to who is their coach. I didn't like them before they got a new coach and I sure don't like them any more now.

Can you provide more details on the "pre-game" event? Cost? How to sign up? Etc...

Hofstra is better than Ball State and this is a neutral court (Dayton likely would have lost to Ball State on a neutral court). Dayton is favored to win 54% of the time with a score of 73-72. Dayton is #104, Hofstra #118, and Ball State is #133 according to kenpom. Yes early in season for kenpom, but the Hofstra game is in no way shape or form a gimme.
Hofstra has a much better offense than Ball State (#75 versus #128), but a much worse defense (#219 versus #149). Dayton better up its game on defense. Rewatched the bucket with 3-4 seconds left. X got beat badly and Baby D/Josh (our senior and redshirt junior) gave zero help defense, they didn't even move -- would have thought 3 and 2 years of Archie defense coaching would have sunk it, but it clearly did not, they had their feet in concrete. Absolutely abysmal defense. If Dayton does not up its game Thursday, it will be onto the losers bracket.
5/7 Hofstra's top minutes players are juniors and seniors. They shoot the 3 well, don't turn it over, and actually are excellent offensive rebounders. This will be a tough game!

Disagree that Hofstra is better than Ball State. They were picked fourth in the preseason CAA poll. One game is too soon to read anything into computer numbers
Don't think it's a gimme by any means

I agree 100%... I would take Ball State every day head to head against Hofstra

I don't see how the handicappers can get a true gage on UD. Are we the team that started 14-0, or the one that coughed up the lead and more with yucky defense? Only to come back and win it with a Hail Mary? Tough call.

Kenpom preseason predictions versus end of season actuals have been overall extremely accurate (for example generally underranked preseason Dayton under Archie but not by much).. Much more accurate than preseason media and coaches polls cited above (with the exception of the AP top 25 which has been very accurate). When I see the attacks on kenpom, reminds of the myths in other threads such as free throw shooting and field goal shooting were better in 60s and 70s. Facts says free throw shooting constant last 50 years at 69%. Fundamentals have not degraded.
Hofstra will be about the same +/- 20 spots from preseason kenpom and so will Ball State at end of year. Both have same coach as last year and largely similar rosters so easier to predict.
Half of all D1 teams were predicted within 1 win preseason of their actual result. Just 2 power 5 teams deviated more than 5 wins from preseason predictions! See https://kenpom.com/blog/a-look-back-on-preseason
Dayton Kenpom forecasts last 3 years have been on average within 5 spots of final ranking with more than 350+ teams: preseason 2017 ranking 37, actual end of season ranking 39; 2016 preseason 64, actual 59; 2015 preseason 50 and actual 42. Pretty accurate ... With a new coach and the 6th fewest returning minutes in D1 basketball, Dayton will have a higher variance than the last years; at least I hope so as preseason ranking 103 with 16-12 record (10-8 conference). Does not predict games 2 and 3 of Charleston as opponents unknown.

Pregame party has north of 450 registered. Another few hundred in walk ups will show up, and I'm sure there will be people at the game who didn't go to the pregame.
In a arena that seats 5k, look for UD to represent about 25% of the fans. Like other UD tournaments on the road, we will be well represented. This will be anything but a 'neutral court' for Hofstra.
