Life and Times of Tom Blackburn

Found this on youtube. a little less than half hour show, narrated by Tom Hamlin on the career of Tom Blackburn. Lots of very old footage and even an interview with assistant coach Don Donoher talking about Tom's illness and his enthusiasm to rejoin the team. Pretty fascinating. Noticed there was only 90+ views and it was put up toward the end of last year.

Anyway, never saw it before and thought I'd share with those who haven't seen it either:

Wow they hung him in effigy! That makes the talk about Archie in January look warm and fuzzy by comparison.

Will look at it when I have some time later on . . . looks great. Tom Hamlin. There's a name from the past. First time I ever heard him do a game was in Dec. '69 - second game of the season after the Arena opened - I had just transferred to UD. We were playing Louisville at Freedom Hall. Won it. Great game. Hamlin's doing the play by play and late in the game he says: Jerry Gottschall is on his man like "bark on a tree." About three weeks later, home in NYS and I'm watching the Tangerine Bowl - forget who was playing - and Tom is doing the play by play on the national telecast and he says: "so and so, the defensive back is on his man like bark on a tree." Tom had that classic "Ted Baxter" look, sound and feel. Supposedly a nice guy I heard from a couple of guys I knew who worked/interned at WHIO. Swampy may have known him fairly well.

Amazing, I guess Dayton fans haven't changed in 60 years. We want our wins and we want them right now lol

Awesome video!
Some faces to remember.......
Finkel, Burlong, Jimmy Powers, Bill Cassidy, the Hattons, Bob Sullivan, Chuck Izor and Hal Schoen of Fort Recovery HS (where I was asst. coach to Al Souder from '69-'76) fame.

In the fall of '62 I was one of asome 50 who tried to walk on for one spot on the freshman team. It came down to two of us, myself and Jim Brown (long time WSU asst coach). Jim made the team and played his freshman year and then joined our championship intramural team, the Tuna Tigers, for a couple years of success.

The video captured why I came from Madison, IN to join the Flyer Faithful and obtain an excellent education. UD basketball was a national power under Tom Blackburn.

GO UD!

That was my senior year. we were 13-6 at the time and to say the least the natives were restless. We didn't lose another game the rest of the season. It does indicate how silly fans can be at times, then and now.

Don Donoher was one of the featured folks in the video.
Anybody hear him on 700WLW Tues at 8 pm? I didn't.
Fill us in if you can.

Can't believe this great video of the start of Flyer hoops, as we know it today, has not been viewed by, and commented on more, then it has.

Go Flyers!

It would be nice if some student at UD would do a video thesis on the history of UD basketball. There is so much there.

Thanks for posting this. It was great to see the development of UD basketball and the familiar names. However, I couldn't find myself in the rush the court scene at the 1962 NIT Championship.

You're not the one who started the stampede of Chmielewski and caused him to quit are you?

Great video! That's the first time I've ever heard Blackburn and Baujan's voices. They've always just been ghostly images in black and white photos. It is nice to see and hear them as real men and not just the iconic image.

I heard Harry Baujan's voice many a time
"Get off the floor (Fieldhouse) with those shoes (non team shoes) on!"

That was great, I am a total geek for historic photos or footage like that so footage of the days of warm up capes and granny shots about The Flyers is extra cool. I am too young to have gone to the Fieldhouse when the team played there so my favorite part was at the end when they do the full player introductions. That scene gave me a nice taste of what it was like there then. I also loved the shot of the Fairgrounds Coliseum set up for a game.
