You have to give VCU credit - they do protect the rim.

We are getting mauled on the boards 32-23, and giving up 13 offensive rebounds.

Out played them or played them even in everything but rebounds and free throws. 11-18 free throws... ugh! Mikesell played awesome, but in the end his 2-5 free throws were huge.
Cunningham with 3 rebounds...ugh!

Would like to see that one and the last play, where Obi wound up on the ground. I know that “the officials shouldn’t decide the game”, but if a foul should be called and is not, isn’t that also, in a manner of speaking, “deciding the game”?

No fouls on either. JDavis didn't attack the rim and Obi was falling down on his own before the ball was passed.

JD was fouled- I’ve watched it over and over. Obi- no foul but unless there was an obvious one there i knew the refs wouldn’t bail em out. But generally- I thought VCu got away with a lot of fouls the last 5 minutes. But if Dayton hits free throws down the stretch we win. Just not enough at the end. Tired legs??

Obi was hit in the face, but after the inbound, as he was falling to the floor... game over.
Davis did not look to be hit on the arm on the two replays I saw. His mistake was to not go right into the defender, who was in the circle.
Cohill is a great defender, but he just froze on that last basket. The guy was by him before he reacted. Freshman error.

Either that or Obi needed to use that action to curl to the middle of the lane for the lob. Both shouldn't have been on the same block in either case.

Why only .7 seconds. The clock clearly read 1.0 seconds when the ball hit the ground. That's a big difference as you can get off a real shot with 1.0.
Regarding officiating, it was obvious they were letting them play. The Flyers didn't match VCUs physical play much of the game. On the last shot, Davis should have gone more directly at the rim - although I believe he was fouled... they were not calling those types of fouls much of the game. I think the worst call, that impacted the game, was the block on Mikesell near midcourt. He was set and VCU player just ran into him and fell - should have been traveling.
Oh well - amazing comeback! A lot of grit with a very short bench.

I agree on both counts. He traveled but VCU didn’t score on the possession. Made free throws would help this team

If you visit VCU game thread, many posters were stating refs were calling the game in Dayton's favor and they were not getting any calls. Know there were many bad calls (or no calls in the game) Wished I could have recorded the game to check those plays over in slow motion. Team showed something with that comeback!

Saw a replay of action from the last 2 minutes from Jablonski’s angle under UD’s basket. Not a good perspective on either the Jordan Davis drive (Jablo was in “duck and cover” mode) or the final play (too many bodies between him and Obi), but it showed clearly what VCU had setup for that last basket by Evans. They cleared-out the left side of the lane for his drive, and if Cohill could have know, he could have overplayed him to force him to go right, where UD had more help-side D. As it was, the left side of the lane provided a clear path to the hole, and Evans’ first step got him the space he needed to execute the drive.
Oh, w(h)ell, on to Davidson.

No doubt, tired legs. Chris R has a great post from the wee hours today that includes a commentary about how VCU’s depth and our lack of it made a big difference in the outcome. If our best players on the day only had to go 25-30 minutes instead of 32-38, we’d have had a much better chance of pulling this one out. A few more minutes of rest (especially against a suffocating defense like VCU’s) would have made a world of difference.
Also, FWIW, we wound-up running into Mikesell and his family after the game, while waiting for a table at a restaurant near UD. Poor guy was so exhausted, he wound-up sitting on the floor of the entry way, because the actual waiting area was too crowded. I went up to the hostess to have them get a chair out of storage for him, which the hostess gladly provided. You could see Ryan was flat-out exhausted after that effort he gave. The least I could do was get him a chair to sit on.

Evans may have been fouled on his last basket. Agreed a lot was let go but I think it was both ways.

Would love to see those as part of a video in slo-mo. It’s obvious in the 2nd picture that he got clocked in the head/shoulder area, but he also appeared to be falling backward into Santos-Silva at the time. Trying to be objective, it would be interesting to see what caused him to lose his balance.
Also, you can still see 0.7 of a second on the game clock in the background, so time had not yet expired at the point that there was contact. Depending on the video replay, there may have been an opportunity for a 1-and-1 or double-bonus FTs, depending on how many fouls VCU had at the time.

It's funny there is still 0.7 left on the clock because Douglas had already touched the ball and landed at that point. Maybe some home cooking on the clock???

Pictures don't mean squat. Remember the Catholic kids in DC??
Look at the whole video, like I have over and over...Obi was falling down before anything happened. There's no possession and it's a loose ball situation...incidental contact is not a foul unless intentional.
No foul.
Move on.

I know refs are supposed to call games the same throughout but it seems like these game situations in college they're gonna let them play. I think back to Frank Igudola at the end of the regulation against Depaul
I don't think you can count on getting foul in that situation, gotta make the play
