Charlotte Thread

Since most of you were probably at the LaSalle match and not listening to the radio broadcast, I'll catch you up on the rotation changes that were suppose to be implemented for LaSalle and today at Charlotte. Based on what Mandy, Mike and Sheff said on the boradcast, none of the rotation players have changed, only what order they lineup in. The three major changes are:

Paige/Ally - they are switching rotation places, meaning Ally use to come in for Lindsay, she'll now come in for Becky. And vice versa with Paige. Paige is still the Libero and Ally the Serving Specialist.

Yvonne and Kray - Yvonne will be hitting from the Leftside for 2 rotations and Kray will be hitting from the rightside for 2 rotations. Each will be hitting from the other side for 1 rotation. Basically, those two have switched positions. It means Yvonne will get more swings because the leftside gets a lot of the out-of-system sets. And Kray will have to step up and block more, stopping the opponent's leftside attacks. I think both are up to the challenge and both have played each side in the past.

Finally, a middle blocker will now follow the setter in the order. In the past an outside hitter has followed the setter. No change in resposibilities, just a change in the order they line up.

Conspiracy Theory:

This was all the talk in the pre-match radio broadcast before LaSalle. UD was going to try something new to maximize things like having Lindsay in the front row when Ally served because she's been our best server and tends to go on point runs. And "on paper" (per Sheff) there were some other advantages like blocking partners and more power from the leftside attacks, etc. Everyone was pretty amped up on this topic on the radio.

Then the first set starts and the team is lined up in the new rotation order before the first serve and the ref is saying it doesn't match up with the lineup card Sheff submitted. What???? Sheff's just spent 1-2 hours talking about this to the radio people and then he submits the old lineup order???? I have a hard time believing that was an error. I would more likely believe Sheff turned it in on purpose to see how the team handled confusion at the start of a match. I think this was a test for the team -- who by the way did not miss a beat. They won that first set 25-5 and everything was executed perfectly. We had zero hitting errors and only 2 total errors. You have to wonder????? I know Mike and Mandy were thrown off course for about 10 minutes trying to figure out what was going on.

The second and third set they go with the new rotation, but there were so many subs going on those sets it's hard to tell how well it worked. We'll get a much better look today against Charlotte.

One thing that Kelly mentioned at the chalk talk is that Kray is really getting that hard angle cut shot down. To hit that shot your hand is in a position where the thumb is down so when you hit the ball it goes parallel to the net (the short easy explanation). She probably hits that shot with more power than any of her other spikes and it is usually an outside hitter trying to dig it.

Yvonne is hitting the ball harder and harder as the year goes on

I agree Yvonne's attack is getting faster and harder. After coming back from a 2 year recovery period, I would be asking that player to ease into playing full-out. I would want to see 80%-85%-90% before I gave the ok to go full-out on a swing, etc. Don't know if that happened, but we haven't seen the best of Yvonne Marten yet and that potential is exciting.

Also, I've seen about 1/2 the matches this year and I don't ever remember Kray missing from the rightside. She might not have found the floor, but I don't remember an error on the right - at a minimum they are few and far between. I've also seen a couple awesome down-the-line shots from her on the right. And Kray's blocking has improved greatly this year which will help her on the right.

And the bar just keeps going up

We hit .343 vs .157. Our hitting errors were only 6.7%. We only had 13 total errors for the match which is 4.3 per set - exceptional. We out-dig 50-46. We out-block 9-3 a good blocking team. We have 7 aces vs 4 service errors. We sweep 3-0. And yet I don't think we played all that great. We are trying some things new and we got better as the match progressed, which is good. But I didn't think we passed that well today. In the 1st set we shanked a lot of balls and sent over more freeballs than I've seen all year. Second set was better, but a lot of out-of-system plays. The good news is we were scoring off out-of-system attacks. And the third set Charlotte was making a lot of errors and most of our servers got on some runs. Tiff had 3 aces in a row. The only other thing is their L1 did well against us. (Bianca Rouse. 14 kills on .290 hitting %.) She's probably the first L1 all year that's done that. We've been taking the other side's best hitter out of most matches.

There's more work to be done, but boy have we raised the bar on this program. We are starting to get on a nice roll. Need to finish strong against Fordham and SLU. Two more for a perfect A-10 season. Go Flyers!!!!

And, of course, with the win, the Flyers will be ranked #1 in the Atlantic 10 tournament. Awesome girls!
