Bo Ryan Retiring immediately

This is surprising. I thought he would finish the season.

Let the rumors begin!

Says Archie would likely not take Wisconsin if offered.

Bo Ryan pulling a Spurrier? I'm surprised.

Ryan wants his long time assistant to succeed him. Alvarez (AD) made no promises over the summer that would be the case. IMO Ryan did this (started the season planning all along to abort now) to enable his guy to audition for the balance of the season. Power play? Perhaps. Too bad it also appears as though Ryan is abandoning the troops during a subpar season.

There are probably a number of reasons why he retired now.

Since he had considered retiring at the end of last season he may have decided at that time maybe he was just tired from the long season and once his batteries were recharged he would be ready to go as good as new.

Now that he is into the season and his batteries have not recharged he acknowledges that he should retire and probably should have retired at the end of the prior season. So he does not prolong the agony either for himself or the team.

The argument against his retiring now is that he is abandoning his team in the middle of the season. But if Bo sees his coaching as more of a detriment than a benefit to the team then his retiring now is good. Perhaps Bo realizes that some of those five losses this year are on him and that the team with a different coach with more energy and enthusiasm might have won a couple of those games, then he is doing his team a favor.

I have a bigger issue with coaches who recruit players and tell them he will be there for their 4 years and who even when making the pitch to the recruit are actively seeking a coaching job at another school. That may be how the game has to be played by the coach but I do not have to like it.

This should be no surprise as he wanted his long time assistant, Greg Gard, to be the next head coach. He now gives Greg Gard a chance to prove himself over the second half of the season.

Ryan has wanted Gard to get the job from day one. Ryan came back this fall just to give Gard time to be with his father who was diagnosed with cancer in the spring and passed away in the fall.

Incredible amount of Respect for Ryan. This shows how loyal he is to his long long long time assistant. And hey if his assistant wins the job by turning around the season one less place we have to hear Archie's name tied to come April after our final 4 appearance.

Perhaps he had more respect and commitment to his assistant than to his AD? It happens and oftentimes for a good reason.

Gard had been his assistant for 23 years. Bo is loyal to him. However, the job of the AD is to find the best person for the job. Their interests diverge at some point. Bo has given Gard an opportunity that he likely would not have gotten otherwise.
