OMG, let me hear the excuses now ?

Please explain to me why every game an opposing player either sets a career high or comes close to it against us, also how long are you going to continue to support AG, itís like Groundhog Day, another embarrassing loss, another team scoring over 80 against us

Anyone else coming around to reality now!!! This is a bad, really bad team and getting worse. We do not have the talent to compete.

Cut the dead wood as soon as this nightmare season is over.To those who believe cutting kids for non performance will adversely effect recruiting I'd say BS and ask: how does anyone know the difference between that and attitude? And what do we have to lose? It's not like we've been overwhelmed with talent coming in anyway. Or do we just hope that by 2025 we've rebuilt????

You were just dying to spew your negativity and couldn't wait to start a new thread. What made you think that this team was going to be successful this season? Any halfway knowledgeable Flyer fan knew that this season would be a struggle. We don't have any depth and are very inexperienced. I am just as passionate as any fan, but I realized early on that this would be a tough year. Also, blaming AG for every loss is getting really tiresome and old. The last time I checked, AG hasn't played one minute this season. Do you blame your boss for poor performance at work?

Yep, udscott rides again. Here to tell us he's right and the world is wrong.

But I think you've got it all wrong.

AG has shown that the decision to go with a short bench early in the year can really get a team gassed late in the year. He's shown he can destroy XW, stunt Crosby, toss Pierce to the side, make Kostas walk away, and heck, he even managed to toast my AT&T connection so I couldn't see the game today. That sir, is a list of accomplishments.

So yep, you're right, we're all miserable. Apparently, you're not happy until everyone's not happy....so you win. Are there red flags, sure. But you might want to consider it's more than the coach.

Sorry Scott, I am not taking the bait. It is useless and you are just out to stir up hate. If and when we get a new coach, you can say I told you so and we will most likey reply whoopey doo.

I am interested in how you get all those red blocks under your reputation that say "udscott is infamous in these parts". How do you manage that? Is this something you can configure yourself? Is it a result of getting excessive red pips. No one else that I have found has this. Swampy has avoided this distinction. It seems like others peoples blocks are green and say "their reputation is beyond repute"

We all expected to go .500 this year, instead all we got was embarrassing losses at home, embarrassing losses on the road, a team that has ZERO offensive scheme, just like I said excuses, excuses, excuses blame everyone but AG

We are simply just not good.. This team should be playing a lot better than they are right now and that is not the case. I am not sure i have any excuses left for this team. How do they put up 106 on vcu and put this performance up against George Mason? I still have hope for the future but right now this team should be better than their record say.

3 players that are 4 star players on this roster for starters. I bet before this year, that UD has never had 3 players, that were 4 star players, on the roster at the same time. Also, a potential 1st team all A10 player is also on this roster.

Can you imagine UDscott on the Pittsburgh board? Remember them under Jamie Dixon who went to the NCAA tourney almost every year and they drove him out. They are now 0-14 in the ACC. 0-14! Yeesh...

Again, following a loss you want to place the blame on Anthony Grant! You are in a small minority that won't support him so let me tell you something: Last season we defeated George Mason 83-70 at the UD Arena. Sophomore Otis Livingston II, all 5'11" of him, was guarded by our senior Kyle Davis who made it a habit of locking down the best guard on the opposing team. Livingston II ended up with 9 points! Kyle has graduated and Otis Livingston II is now a junior with another year of experience. He dropped 29 on us tonight (I think that is who you were referencing in your above post). As far as I know AG used up his eligibility back in the 80's so he had to put either of the two freshman Jalen Crutcher or Jordan Davis on Livingston and try to guard him! Archie would have had the same dilemma also had he stayed!

Another thing I noticed is that X had 12 points in that win over George Mason last season. Tonight he was 0-4 with zero points! One player, Otis Livingston II, decided to put in the effort and time to improve his game. The other player, Xeyrius Williams, for some unknown reason has not improved but instead has regressed! You, udscott, would like to blame AG for X's regression also if you could but you can't!

I don't know how you could expect this team to remain status quo when we had a coach leave for greener pastures and graduated four players who set a record for over 100 wins in their careers. Please give AG enough time to recruit and get his own players in here! But, you won't! You will continue to come on here and blame him for every loss. Funny how you never post after a big win!

Do you really think AM would have a better year than AG at this point? And don't say MW would have been here etc... I'm talking about THESE players, not what could have been...He might have done better but probably not since he didn't develop anybody behind the graduating seniors because you know... he was aiming for a higher job. AM was smart; he rode last years seniors at the expense of this years experience. Tell me he developed Trey Landers. What were his coaches doing with Kostas? He used UD to get where he's at.

IF by end of AG year 3, UD is not competitive I will judge then. This team was in a complete state of disarray when AG took over. I thought they might be a few games over .500 if all went well. The freshmen look very promising, ditto TL. Same with Josh. We get Mikesell back along with Toppin. Things will get better with Cohill arriving. If you don't like what you see, follow IU or another team. Let me know if you need a chiropractor from jumping on and off the bandwagon your entire life - I know a good one.

I don't think it's unfair to judge Grant right now so stop with the "give him 8 years to get his guys" BS. This team is not that talented but Grant is getting nothing out of what he has and he deserves the blame for that.

Landers barely played because he was hurt and had guys ahead of him. Archie also barely played Davis and Pollard their freshman year. Same reasons. This is a bad take.

Landers had a sports hernia and better guys in front of him. He got healthy, transformed his body and improved in the offseason.

X I think he could have coaxed more production from and used guys better in their roles

AG got swept by a UMass team with a fellow first year head coach who inherited a worse team and more depleted roster.

I get that you need to give a coach time but there are problems that would be here if he had Villanova's roster.

I don't think anybody, ANYBODY... has said give him 8 years; you're embellishing big time. He has a short bench and his starters are largely freshmen (I consider Landers a freshmen in terms of court time since AM never played him). So you have 3 inexperienced freshmen players, 1 player who was at best a 6/7th man last year. Another who played limited healthy minutes...and those are your starters! Svoboda, freshmen. Kostas, freshmen. X, either injured, sick or otherwise but not the same player he was last year. Crosby is mixed bag. Pierce is a no show. Toppin not eligible, Mikesell out red shirt this year. You people are clueless. HE GETS 3 YEARS.

UDScott I surrender ... I have given up on UDPride for being fair and balanced ...I have given up UDPride for Lent. Congrats to you ... you win.

It ain't right to jump on a coach his first year ... period. I won't give up on AG.

The next time I come onto this site it will be after Easter. GN.

Don't forget to mention that at one point, AG seemed to be utilizing some sort of 4-1 zone or 3-1 with a floater; either way, Mason destroyed it each time and got an open look. Yes part of good defense is on the player himself, but also a part of it is on the coach too. If the coach doesn't tell the player to stick on Livingston and make his life a living hell, then it may or may not happen.

And if the coach tells a player to stick on Livingston and make his life a living hell, and the player isn't capable of defending me, then what do you do?

Grant is not King...he's just a coach. And our younger players have limitations. I don't think everyone gets that.

If I'm Grant, I'm doing 2 things daily: I challenge the younger players today and sell them on what 'will be' next season...and do whatever it takes to keep Cunningham happy and enrolled in '18-'19.

If he can do that, he earned his '17-'18 salary.

UMass got credit for a 35 foot three pointer that clearly came after the shot clock and won that game.

Sometimes, it's just not all the coach's fault.

He gets three years to accomplish what exactly? Outside of two more seasons like this one, it's hard for me to see the same crowd that criticizes anyone who posts something negative about AG actually calling for his job.

I'm frustrated with the season but it's entirely possible I have the wrong perspective and I'm being an unreasonable fan.

Is it reasonable to be concerned that Dayton is one game out of last place in mid February during the worst season the A10 has had in over a decade? Does this team have better talent than to be in the basement of a league that RPI wise is closet to the MAC?

Can we be concerned that this team has lost 6 of 8 games down the stretch?

Is it reasonable to think that Kostas has regressed from the Hofstra game?

If we had a Trent Meachum situation where a key contributor or potential contributor left, would the call for more time and seasons grow?

You guys kill me with your inability to detect hyperbole, it's truly astonishing. I didn't expect this team to be good but at this point in the season I would have thought we'd at least be competitive with teams that have equal or lesser talent. The A10 is putrid this year, lets not forget that.

teams that have equal or lesser talent..LMAO. The A10 is putrid and UD is "putrid". And who are you to judge who has equal/better talent than UD? Flyers may have the least amount of talent in the league right now..And talent doesn't always get you to the W every/most game. You better have a real "team" and that includes having experience and having what they call a real BENCH. This team's bench is far and away as bad as any team in college basketball and I'm talking 320 plus teams. How many teams in NCAA BB give a team as few MPG and PPG as this team does. What this bench does provide to the opponents are the most fouls and turnovers.

So Hofstra is the epitome of competition for measuring athletic peaks?

FWIW, My Team hasn't regressed...plenty of players are performing way above expectations...Landers, JDavis, DDavis (80% of the time), Cunningham...

The only player who has regressed is XW.

The rest just plain sucked from day 1 and still suck on day 100. And from all reports, it isn't from lack of coaching...it's from lack of effort.

"And That's the"...well, I'll let the Royal Muses say it for me:

So Archie quit recruiting, developing, coaching, etc. and left a mess in terms of a roster. Are we talking a 3-5 year rebuild here?

Dayton has as much talent as anyone in the A10 bar St Bonnnie and URI.

This team doesn't play hard on defense and is poorly coached. Players clearly quit last night which is not a good look.

Yes, I would assume a transfer would add 1-2 years. An NIT appearance at some point would show we are on the right direction and he gets until year 6 because we can't have a Cohill transfer or have a "program changing" recruit like Joey ThreeStar decommit. Year 6 is the breakthrough into the NCAA's and we lock up Grant for the following decade.

With all due respect, the King has been wrong in the past. He was not an Archie fan in year 3 and wanted him fired, and he was dead wrong there.

And IINM, he was a big BG defender too.

This trashing of a coach who gave us our most successful run in over 30 years on here is ridiculous.

Guys didn't work out in recruiting in the junior class but the notion that he just quit recruiting, stopped developing or just quit on Dayton to look for his next job isn't true.

Kostas "has a bad attitude" or "sucks" now but the guy was a higher ranked on Rivals than Cohill. How many years on this board do people complain about a big man and Archie gets a 6'11 guy with great athletic ability who can run the floor. Those guys are growing growing trees

Ok, so if JC transfers, we have to give AG 6 or 7 years? Is that what I am reading? What about other players transferring? 6 or 7 years in that/those case/cases too?

Grant is not King...he's just a coach. And our younger players have limitations. I don't think everyone gets that.

If I'm Grant, I'm doing 2 things daily: I challenge the younger players today and sell them on what 'will be' next season...and do whatever it takes to keep Cunningham happy and enrolled in '18-'19.

If he can do that, he earned his '17-'18 salary.

It was inevitable that udscott was going to start this thread. I made one post and tried to sum up everything!

We all wish we had a quick answer or explanation but like someone said in another post, "We Need Help Fast"! That is why I am so bullish on recruiting! It's not so much about the x's and o's but the jimmies' and joe's!

Oh, please help me with the parameters of this game we're now playing.

Are we pretending that players with great potential don't improve from their freshman to sophomore season even with minimal playing time during the former? Are we pretending that a season of practice and offseason to evaluate and improve upon both weaknesses and strengths don't matter? Are we pretending that because Landers sat behind players, all with more years of experience than him that he will never be as good as those players? Are we pretending that Landers was better than XW last season or that he isn't better than XW this season?

I honestly don't even know where to begin with this team. There's so many things going wrong that it's hard to pinpoint the direct issues.

We clearly lack players, though I do think some of the young players show talent. Specifically, Trey, Jordan and Jalen. Will it be enough to take us anywhere? Who knows.

We seem to lack all sense of leadership. I put this on both the players and the coaching staff. With such a young team, we need to rely on experienced players; DD, Josh and XW. XW is completely lost (or injured?), and DD is painfully inconsistent – to the point of being a liability at times. Can this coaching staff motivate? To me, that’s a key part of a college coaching staff’s job description. The jury is still out, but I’m not having any issues finding reasons to question it!

Too many players are failing to improve, and you could arguably that some are regressing. Matej and Kostas are simply not showing signs of improving (if not going backwards). The cause is unknown. It could be on them, or on the coaching staff. XW is completed absent. Crosby is what he is. We needed them this year, and they aren't delivering.

As a former point guard, I despise our offensive sets. As a defensive-minded player, I won’t even discuss our complete lack of defense. We play small because our bigs are unreliable. We play sloppy because of what often seems like lack of focus. Forced shots, bad decisions, frustration fouls. You name it.

The team seems to lack chemistry. When you look at the players, they look tense. They don’t appear to be having fun much of the time. I also put this on the whole of players and coaches. Someone needs to step up and be that motivator. Sometimes it seems like Trey is trying to take on that role, but we don’t have a true Devon Oliver or Kyle Davis style player. I seriously question whether the coaching staff has it in them.

Bottom line, I don’t think there’s an easy answer to this. I think everyone is involved. It seems to me that plenty of people, players and staff, have some work to do if we’re going to come out of this funk anytime soon.

Kostas was a 4-star in HS (Reported, not Royally believed)
Kostas was a 3-star as an academic casualty last season.
Kostas is a 2-star at best as an eligible redshirt freshman.

Which begs the question, WTF was a healthy Kostas Atapotapenko doing while the injured Trey Landers was improving? I mean, besides studying .

I have always considered myself to be very reasonable. I think people are being somewhat unreasonable on both sides of this AG argument/back and forth. The facts are Dayton is coming off of 4 straight tournament appearances, the Flyers have unparalleled resources in the A-10, 4 very special players graduated, and we have a new coach who does not have "his players".

What no one can argue about is that this team does not pass the eye test regardless of the reason - and it frustrates everyone. This team does not play a smart brand of basketball and frequently lacks intensity. It is not something we are used to. This reminds me way too much of Jim O'Brien's teams. Next year will be very telling and I am willing to be patient until then.

I have a feeling that our lone senior, who everyone dumps on for lack of leadership and untimely turnovers will be used as an excuse next season because "you can't expect a team to improve when they lose their leading scorer from a losing season."

Sorry, are you saying every freshman who's ever ridden the pine because he had a better player ahead of him should be considered a wasted scholarship since he'll never amount to anything special?

All the comments about stars shows how unreliable the rating services can be. They are not an exact science. So is recruiting. You have no idea if and how players develop.

It happens at the next level too. How many NBA draft picks justify their selection? And at the NBA level, there is even more money at stake.

And when AG gets fired and your guy get hired and does not do well you are going to say that your guy was dealt a bad hand. How far in the future do you want to project how bad the Flyers are going to be and the reasons/excuses they are bad?

Seriously what the hell is it with some of you? Not only do you want to ***** and moan about this sucky season but you want to project and ***** and moan about future sucky seasons. I'd love to play golf with some of you. One bad shot and the hole is over. One bad hole and the round is over. One bad round and the season is over.

Especially in the range of recruits Dayton is generally going to get 3 star guys. You don't know if you're getting Kendall Pollard or Chris Alvarez.

At least with transfers there's more of an idea what they can do on the college level

No, what Iím saying is that, unless you are a blue blood, you canít expect three guys who didnít see the floor last year to come in and lead you to a good season. They may contribute, but when theyíre forced to play 35+ minutes every game because we donít have a bench, itís going to be a long season.

Sorry, doesn't wash. I can handle the fact he doesn't have the horses but you have to use the horses you do have and he's not using them. If your 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th men of the bench aren't good enough to give minutes and still win, then you don't have a winning roster. You still use them. Is AG the smartest coach in the country where he leaves Timeouts on the floor just about every game in losing efforts? Is he the smartest coach in the country where he believes you're better off losing playing 5 good players almost 40 minutes a game rather than giving them some breathers?

I posted that I have hope for the future because he is really good at recruiting talent. And my hope is that his head scratching moves, or non-moves recently are a way for him to run off players he doesn't see helping him in the near future to get those recruits here faster. Because if he coaches like this every year, we're doomed.

NBA Lottery Pick, Larry Sanders.

Grant recruited, signed and developed Sanders as head coach at VCU.

The nucleus of VCU's 2011 final four team (4 seniors) were Anthony Grant's guys as well.

Did you go to the same debate school as my wife and UAC? You are changing the argument and missing my point.

You want to keep b!tching about the things you think AG is doing this year - go ahead. I have my complaints too. You want to b!tch about the excuses other posters are making this year - go ahead. I think some of them may be off base too. The problem I have is that you are b!tching about next season when the Flyers stink and the excuses posters are going to use then. Can't you wait until if and when that happens before you b!tch about it?

Oh sure I could. But I want it documented here so I can pull up this thread and make those excuse makers see just how predictable they were. And if they suck next year and nobody brings up the loss of Baby D as their excuse, I welcome you to drag me back here.

I am not sure about anyone else but your opinion really doesn't matter to me Smitty. Be you right or wrong you are still

Your whining is not going to change a thing

It is definitely not going to make me think you are some sort of genius. You weren't the only person concerned with the AG hire but most are wise enough to let it ride out and realize ridding yourself of a new coach that has only 1 recruit and practically none of the core team from the previous years does not say good things about your program.

You can call that excuses if you want. I do believe it is the coaches responsibility to motivate the team to no longer embarrass the fans of Dayton. Whatever he needs to do he needs to learn what makes them tick because I believe even Dayton fans have a limit. Maybe the fans need to let them know what is expected. I was never a fan of booing my team but they obviously need something.

I don't know what the hell I'm talking about other that I know Smitty doesn't either

What don't you understand about the post? He gets the SAME BENEFIT OF 3 YEARS TO BRING IN HIS PLAYERS and BUILD HIS SYSTEM AROUND HIS RECRUITS that nearly all division 1 coaches get, including our previous coaches. It's called patience. AG deserves and will get at MINIMUM, 3 years to institute his system. Calling for him to be fired after 1 year is ridiculously idiotic, immature and will not happen.

If you feel that's not fair, don't have the patience, that's fine. Go follow IU. I have followed UD since I was a 6 year old in 1967. I've seen plenty of good years and some bad ones. I've seen a HOF coach get screwed over and bad coach that replaced him get fired. I saw another coach rebuild the program and his successor take it a bit higher but never achieved the success of our last coach (who said all the right things about building something special but in the end was just all talk).

I really like the current coach because he was coached by the HOF coach, coached with another soon to be HOF coach (BD) and has largely been successful. And I add - AG seems to have the integrity that I admired in DD and BG - sadly missing recently. And I may be wrong but I don't think he's looking to use UD to springboard his career. So this coach deserves a chance. I'll wait for the right kind of success that will come.

I thought top 15 was a lottery pick. Maybe not. But he was great in college. I thought that was the question. Name one stud Grant coached. Under Anthony Grant, Larry Sanders was a stud. No one else got that production out of him.

Look, Iím not real enthused with the job Grant has done either. I get it. But Larry Sanders is a correct answer to your question.

Ooooh. I see where the disconnect is here. You have mistaken me for someone who gives a rat's a ss about your opinion. Sorry, wrong number.

I didn't really care that you were concerned. I just gave my opinion and you are whining like a beetch. You seem to have a disconnect with a large number of people that don't really care about your opinion and it really irritates you. What is the 10 for your age?

Again, three years to accomplish what? It's a simple question.
