This is a huge pledge for Anthony Grant. Dwayne Cohill is a tough, aggressive combo guard with upside. Had impressive moments this summer.

Putting a few qualifiers on why this seems more impressive than past top 100 recruits -- Kostas had some seemingly known qualifying issues that other programs knew about, but Dayton was willing to wait on. Wright and Staten were Dayton guys.
Recruiting-wise, couldn't ask for a better start from AG. Hopefully development and coaching skills match it.

everyone has off games, but Tony had more great games than off...
If he has even a little itty bit of Tony Stanley in him, that is a very very good thing!!
I remember the Miracle at Millett... we're down by 6 with less than 5 minutes to go.. Miami has held Stanley in check pretty much the entire game, and he simply takes over the game with his shooting, as great players can do.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiCrrTQE_k8

That's hard to debate, but in all fairness there are no perfect recruits. Some just can't do anything but expand on their imperfections. Others work hard at getting over them. We have had a few of both types--recently.
Dwayne sounds like he has a good head on him, and will only get better.

Enlightening info in here re his recruitment
http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/spo...IFVzjkaATAxjO/
Cohill said Miller told him he was too much of a “big-time player” to come to Dayton.
“He didn’t know if I would actually think about it,” Cohill said. “He didn’t want to waste his time. But I always tell everyone no school is too small or too big. Wherever I feel is perfect for me, that’s where I’m going to end up.”
Dayton had started to recruit him again earlier this year, Cohill said, and then Miller left for Indiana in March. Dayton introduced Grant as coach on April 1. Twelve days later, Cohill met Grant for the first time at an AAU tournament.

How many other players did Archie not bother recruiting because he thought they were too good to play at UD? Almost makes me glad he's gone.

I would think Coach Miller would not have said those exact words, however I can see where Miller and some other coaches backing off and moving on to another target. As we can see with the recruits Coach Grant has offered he is not afraid to fail or go up against the so-called big boys.

Honestly, I bet it happened more than we would like. Look at all the Top100 players he would be in on early. It seemed like many times we would offer a kid early, we would be his best offer, and then when a few bigger schools offered, we were never mentioned again. I know this is a two way street, and maybe those kids lost interest in UD, but who nows how many times it played out like Cohill.

To be fair to Archie, AG is reaping the rewards of playing in 4 straight NCAA tourneys and the elite 8 run.
Butler, Creighton, Wichita State, Gonzaga weren't landing top 100 players early on in their success

That's fair Buster- but I stand by it. Archie leaving had half of us wringing our hands in worry, wondering if this was the end of the run. There was a number of our own that was critical of hiring CAG. I personally was very pleased with the hire.
I liked he was an alum, liked his track record at VCU and to a lesser extent Bama, liked his NBA experience, liked his executive "presence", liked his ethics & self-discipline, liked his family values, liked his ability to keep all but one recruit, and was just waiting to see his if he could recruit new talent after years away from college ball.
Bingo- the kids relate to him. I guess all along I presumed he was a decent bench coach with his many years of college ball success. I think we hit 2 home runs in a row. I'm in my happy place and being a Flyer fan is beautiful.

I think this is just a continuation of what we have seen from AG from the minute he stepped in the door. Retaining 3 of Archie's recruits, bringing in two very capable kids when there wasn't a great deal available, the handling of Miller and now this signing shows what the guy is made of. Although this year may be an adventure, I have not been this excited about the future of the program in a long time. He is not afraid to aim high and expect to win. You have to love that. To hear that Archie gave up on a player that eventually signed is disappointing to say the least. I believe we have a winner.

I was down on the hire. We knew he could recruit but the question is can he coach them up. This is where he had trouble in Alabama. We won't find that out until after the season

VCU: 76–25 (.752). 3 seasons, 2 NCAA's and an NIT.
Bama: 117–85 (.579). 6 seaons, 1 NCAA and 3 NIT's.
In 9 seasons as the HC he went 193-110 (.636) including 3 NCAA's and 4 NIT's. Doesn't include anything as an assistant a UF under Donovan. Maybe Alabama wasn't a good fit for him personally, but it wasn't like he was terrible (1 losing season).

I am sorry, but Dayton should never have a losing season and I DISAGREE, in college basketball those stats are terrible. That would be terrible for Dayton. Dayton does not want 3 NITs and 1 NCAA in 6 years. I think Grant will be good, but what you said is rewriting the past.

On a fast track to goodness
One thing Archie did was create story lines that Basketball Talking Heads like to latch on to. That was in addition to presenting some successful exciting teams ( who can forget the magic season of the UD Lilliputians?). We had the "NY City point guard", The "wing man for Jabari Parker", Sean Miller's kid brother Archie, father Miller's DNA as a coach, and many more puff articles . And all that patter eventually led into a dialog of the rich history of basketball accomplishments that UD has logged over 7 decades, not to forget the most rabid traveling fan base.
Anthony has a good head start on that kind of material that ESPN, et al, likes to have to hype tv games. He has proven before that he can recruit. Now he is proving he can do it at Dayton. The needle is definitely pointing up.
He is quickly laying the foundation of interesting progress that draws attention to UD as a desirable participant in the big Tournaments, and hopefully attractive to more and better ooc opponents, and lastly an appealing program to top talent which is necessary to break through to next level.
All of this leads to the opportunity to continue our NCAA string of appearances, and ultimately some strong runs to the Final Four. Anthony is off to a great start.

Rewriting the past? That is Anthony Grant's record? He didn't light the world up while at Alabama, but it wasn't terrible.
You obviously didn't go to UD from 1991-1995. We would've enjoyed having something better than a 0.500 season. UD was THE definition of terrible during the JOB years. Forget about it, it's not even up for debate. We're not the far distant from the tepid performances under Gregory. He too wasn't terrible. We'll see what Grant ends up doing but his record is far from terrible. My god the hyperbole in here is ridiculous.

I'll take the VCu results his first three years at UD. I do not find the Alabama results to be satisfactory.

Being the head UD MBB coach begins with recruiting. ESPN has us as the most difficult MBB coaching job in the state- one of toughest in country. We're stuck in the A10, we compete with X, UC, OSU and the Butlers, Marquettes, WVU's, and other B10 programs. Getting the athletes here is a must have. We can't assume that is a given.
So to see CAG off to this start is critically important- and we just can't throw in the "well we all knew he could recruit" line as if it was a given. Yes- coaching them up as Archie did would be fantastic, and would make CAG one of the most talented all around coaches in America. For now- I'm happy starting off with recruiting the right kids.

I do think most of us expected Grant would land some big fish. Obviously, it's really encouraging to see Grant bring in a top 100 in-state recruit for 2018. But am I surprised? Yes and no. In terms of the kid's rank, no. But I would have guessed it would take him a little time to make inroads in Ohio, landing the most upper echelon in-state kids. Figured he would start by pulling in a stud or two from Florida or elsewhere down south. So to me, that's the most exciting part. Not that I care where Grant pulls the talent in from, but it is comforting to see the one question mark in terms of his recruiting resume being answered (can he recruit Ohio?).
Now, the elephant in the room is still there... can he coach 'em up? Say what you will about Archie, he could do that. Grant may not have deserved to be fired at Alabama. but the fact remains he couldn't squeeze enough out of his talent to keep his job.
So can he coach? We will find that out soon enough. But yeah, so far so good. He's passed all the tests so far. Can't ask for anything more.

DallasFlyer, above you stated you figured that Grant would start by pulling in a stud or two from Florida or elseware down south. Well how about Antwann Jones Jr. 6'5' 190 lbs. from Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, FL. Archie was the first to offer him as well. If we could get a verbal from him, that would really put the icing on the cake to the 2018 recruiting class! If Sam wanted to come back he would have to pay his own way as a walk on.

I had the chance to see him play this past year. He definitely showed that knack for getting to the basket. He showed a lot of speed and quickness. It was just one of those games where you could see that he was just a level or two above his competition.

pro - yes, that would be a pro...
con - same coach tell a kid he doesn't want him. same coach then leaves school.
yet, he still signs with the school and the incoming coach, who recruited him as a top priority. a LOT of credit must go to AG and his staff.

Not that the recruiting by Grant and his staff was not excellent. But what impressed me the most by Dwayne's signing with UD is that he did so first without waiting for a formal visit to OSU or VT or any of the other big schools looking for him.
He did so even after Archie had backed off. What it tells me is that it was not just the coaching staff which sold Dwayne into coming to UD but it was UD itself which helped sell Dwayne. Dwayne had apparently kept his interest in UD and did not have a bad feeling for UD but in fact was very receptive when the new coaching staff entered the picture. A University might get an edge when recruiting local talent ie Staten etc or Meechum to Illinois regardless of who the coach is but to get the non-local kid to choose the University without looking further is impressive for the School.

Somebody might of mentioned it before but how high was Chris Wright ranked? If I remember right he was a 4 star recruit that also had an offer from UNC.
Maybe I'm getting old and losing my mind. Idk. Would still be interested to find out all the same.

247 had Chris Wright 64 overall in their composite.
http://247sports.com/Player/Chris-Wright-63910
They had Staten as the number 70 player.
http://247sports.com/Player/Juwan-St...titution=29870
I do not believe 247 was around back then, so those are the average ranks of just Scout, Rivals, and ESPN.

247 did not have a profile for him, but verbal commits had him as a 3 star on their composite.

To be fair, Paul Williams is pretty forgettable. Okay player but no highlight reel plays or anything that sticks in the memory banks. I mean even his name was about as unmemorable as they come. Ask me in 10 years who Paul Williams is... will I remember? I wouldn't count on it.

A cheap shot if I ever saw one. Perhaps he did not live up to his ranking, but he was a memorable player if you like to watch the defensive side of the ball. Plus, he stepped up big time in our win over X in the 2011 A-10 tournament -- the first and only.

I think PW also suffered with chronic knee pain so he didn't have the hops he once had. To me he was a warrior who brought all he could every night.

PW was an ambassador for UD as well. I recall my daughter's freshman orientation at the arena. It coincided with Dr Dan's arrival. PW and Mickey Perry spoke to the incoming freshman about their UD experience, telling them to put away all those tshirts and jerseys from other schools and wear UD swag and wear it proudly. A couple of kids who didn't fill the stat sheet but loved being Flyers.
For the life of me I don't understand why more former players aren't more visible/welcomed back, except for HOF induction weekend or other extenuating circumstances (Johnny Davis last year). It's a shared responsibility, but I think UD could put forth a better effort.

"We're really excited about the addition of Dwayne Cohill to the Dayton basketball family," Grant said. "Having a chance to get to know Dwayne and his family, I think foremost he's a great young man from a great family who will fit really well into our campus community."
"I think he's a great 'get' for us as basketball player", Grant added. "He brings the skill set that gives him the ability to be able to play multiple positions. He's effective with the ball in his hands and off the ball. I think he's a guy whose whole career has been all about team -- all about winning. He's a culture guy in terms of what he represents.
"We think we're getting a great addition – a great young man and a great family so we're really excited to have him become a Flyer."

With those beautiful new video boards, there should be a closeup of every player in the house who used to play for the Flyers every time they visit. That requires coordination and leadership. Someone needs to tell AG "make sure we know so we can find him (her) before halftime". Somebody tell Bucky, I'm sure former players stop to shake his hand at some point. Put his (her) kids and spouse on the big screen too.

Dwayne went for 40 in his HS's final scrimmage/preseason game, it was a 100-100 tie last night (played a higher ranked team).
His season gets started on Saturday at 12:45 PM against East Tech in Cleveland

Agree!
It happens at many many other schools, even some that don't yet have the long history UD has.

He is a great player! Even though McKinley Wright is having an outstanding season so far at Colorado I think it will end up being a blessing in disguise because Dwayne will be even better for the Flyers starting next season and he may not have come to UD at all if Wright had stayed. Also, Jalen Crutcher is continuing to develop and is a valuable asset and wouldn't be here either if Wright had stayed!

Holy Name up 41-29 at the half... Dwayne with 11 points 10 rebounds... Looks definitely like more of a 2 guard than a point (he plays off the ball)

Holy Name won 90-63, but no word on Dwayne's final stats. A teammate got MVP with 20 pts. Their opponent, East Tech, has been a great program for the last 50 years.

He seems pretty unselfish for a "star player" - which is a good thing. Setting screens and making the extra pass.
They have some guys who can shoot the ball pretty well.

Which is probably how UD views him as well since we are still looking at other PG's.

I like watching games of our commits. It's crazy the jump they make from high school to college. Sometimes you watch a kid play and wonder how that translates to a game against VCU. Our coaches get a hold of them and next thing you know they are out there holding their own.
It's fun to watch the progression.
