ESPN's College Basketball Preseason Power Index
does not think highly of the Flyers in 2017-18. They are ranked #162 and 11th in the A-10 behind Duquesne. Ugh!

Perfect. I would not care if they rated us 300. Would not want any bloated heads.

Good thing they play the game on the court instead of on paper.

ESPN is great as long a you use a few simple rules.
1. Only watch live games
2. Don't read anything on their website. Just look up scores with it.
3. DVR the Scott Van Pelt Sportscenters and only watch the parts you want.
4. Only watch live games

Good...gives them something to prove.
This team can't look past anyone. Ball State will be a tough challenge given the so-so start against ODU.

I agree. We might not win the A10, but come on, 11th? Hope not, that is a scary thought.

Bulletin board material.
They have us only ahead of Fordham and the Georges.
Ball State is listed at 115, so when we win it will be a huge upset...

My personal opinions on ESPN aside, UD was never going to show up strong in this type of rating, at least not at the moment. This is a purely analytical rating based upon their "formula" there should be no "eye test" or "gut feelings" its pure numbers. This is where UD suffers in something like this, is there an NCAA tournament team from last year that returns less proven scoring, rebounding, defense, etc.. than UD? On top of that, they lost their head coach, and while CAG has a history, its been a few years since he's been in the college game, so its not like they can apply some sort of "history factor" like I'm sure is involved in these preseason ratings. Finally, while I like some of the recruits that UD has brought in, its not like they are obvious top 100 recruits that will provide some benefit to the numbers that they are replacing.
In short, any faith you place in UD at this point is a big based upon little concrete evidence. As UD fans, we may realize that Cunningham was a shell of himself after the injury, and its reasonable to have faith that he'll be 100% and fulfill the promise that he showed as a frosh as well as the first 2 games last year. Outside of that, how much are we "certain" of? Can we trust Crosby at Point? If not, are you ready to trust a 3 star incoming frosh? Will Darryl Davis be able to finish strong in traffic? Will his shot become more consistent? Can Williams make the transition from being "a man" to being "the man"? Can Kostas cash in on his superior athleticism; how much has he been set back by injuries? Who's going to get the tough defensive assignments that Kyle used to take on? Who's going to control the offense at the end of tight games like Scoochie did? Will these players respond to setbacks under CAG the way they responded to setbacks under Archie?
Of the million things to worry about as a Flyer Fan heading into Friday, the preseason BPI on ESPN is near the bottom. If you do care, in time the preseason and history that factories into these preseason ratings will vanish and the rankings will reflect what UD has earned on the court.

Yeah, it seems like ESPN is trying to compete with the likes of Ken Pomeroy and other analytics systems out there. Like any set of pre-season data or polls, they really mean nothing. Having said that, for reference, KenPom has UD at #103 and 6th in the A-10. That at least feels closer to my gut than ESPN's system, but none of them are worth anything until they start getting fed with real data.

Interesting for opening up discussion but essentially a meaningless preseason poll on power. Overall rankings are about as meaningless at this point but we are receiving points in the AP poll:
AP WEEK 1
RK TEAM W-L PTS
1 DUKE (33) 0-0 1572
2 MICHIGAN STATE (13) 0-0 1520
3 ARIZONA (18) 0-0 1506
4 KANSAS (1) 0-0 1439
5 KENTUCKY 0-0 1340
6 VILLANOVA 0-0 1284
7 WICHITA STATE 0-0 1270
8 FLORIDA 0-0 1100
9 UNC 0-0 1047
10 USC 0-0 995
11 WEST VIRGINIA 0-0 840
12 CINCINNATI 0-0 837
13 MIAMI 0-0 836
14 NOTRE DAME 0-0 814
15 MINNESOTA 0-0 642
16 LOUISVILLE 0-0 570
17 XAVIER 0-0 544
18 GONZAGA 0-0 500
19 NORTHWESTERN 0-0 473
20 PURDUE 0-0 362

Good programs need to play good programs.
Glad to see that we are playing Ball State and not willing to put this game in the loss category. Let’s play the game first.

I don't watch Gameday most of the time because it makes me cringe every time Corso struggles through a segment since he had his stroke. I just hate watching him stumble with his words and Herbstreit having to help him through it.

Sorry, I disagree, I really just do not like opening with a tough opponent under any circumstances.
I have no problem playing BSU, but not in the opener, and definitely not in a new coach's opener and then heading straight into a tough exempt tournament.

Similar to UD, Ball State has acquired all their points in the initial rating thanks to 1 voter, in this case Seth Davis of CBS and SI. Perhaps a solid UD win will earn the Flyers some national pub from Seth.

Absolutely, ESPN has forced their BPI and FPI down our throats long enough that they've now kind of become accepted rankings, not too far removed from the KenPom or Sagrin ratings. IIRC, Pomeroy wrote an article a few years back on his early season rankings, how he derived them and their "worth". He said that if you can take a step back and view them from 1,000 feet, they are surprisingly accurate in a general sense; a programs history in combination with the returning players history typical recruiting history is a very good indicator of future performance. However, if you dive down to a 1 foot level and look at individual programs on a case by case basis, there is too much uncertainty, especially in a team that finds itself in a similar situation as the Flyers do this year to feel confident one way or another about his preseason numbers.

-7? Ball State is supposed to be pretty **** good. Vegas likes the Flyers apparently. I still think if Crosby and Crutcher are average we make the Tourney again on the backs of Cunningham and Xeyrius. Darrell and Svoboda wearing out the 3 point line wont hurt either

It's tough when your two best players are forwards. Right now that appears to be the case. You'd prefer the two best to be a forward and a wing or PG. Hopefully either somebody steps up their game on the perimeter, or the three point shooting is so good that it doesn't matter. If the latter, expect some inexplicable losses on nights the three doesn't fall.

Josh, Xeyrius, Kostas, and Matej are all forwards and may be our best FOUR players. Stay tuned. It's all a guess at this stage.

How did that work out for you?
Scores aside, I think we saw plenty of potential in this team. It will just take a little time for it all to mature and show up.

Stop playing into Shawnee2's trap. He has been on here since 2009 and has 73 posts. He is just trying to troll people and get a reaction. He did it earlier today when he started a thread about Brian Kollars from the DDN and tried to stir up people.
He's a troll plain and simple.
