UD Rugby will become famous soon enough
Free Throw Question

What happened in the game last night with Ball State's two free throws towards the end? We couldn't figure it out. The ref passed the ball off to the player, but had his hand up to wait. The ref then blew the whistle I think, but the Ball State player shot anyways (and made it).

Then the refs got together, talked for a good minute, ended up counting the first free throw even though the player shot when he wasn't supposed to. Just thought it was odd and no one around us knew what was happening.

Granted that player was pretty good at free throws, so don't think it would've mattered anyways, but any info would be appreciated!

I'm looking into it. I ref later today and will run it past my partner(s).

FWIW, once the whistle blew play is supposed to stop. I wouldn't have allowed the FT and here's why: Had he missed, he could have easily argued that the whistle blew and distracted him so he should get another. And the refs would have no choice but to give it to him. But he made it which does not negate the fact that a whistle blew and the other 9 players relaxed. 'Inadvertent whistle' or not, 1st of 2 FTs or not, a dead ball is a dead ball. No shot.

Maybe college rules are different. I don't see how, but will allow for that possibility. Stay tuned.

Rule

I believe the rule says that once the ref gives the ball to the shooter, he is free to shoot at will, which he did. The king can check on that for us.

I'm guessing this question was asked because there was no audio on the stream.

I've got another, why was play stopped and the Flyers given the ball with 2.9 seconds on the clock at the end? All I saw was Crosby heave a wild half court shot and the game would be over. Was a timeout called and Crosby just played through it? Made no sense to me.

Smitty, the officials ruled that Time had been called with 2.6 to go. I'm guessing CAG called it from the bench. Then, a BSU player tipped the throw-in just past mid court. That ran 0.7 seconds off the clock. Then X had that almost-perfect lob to Mr C, who scored the game-winner. What a finish!

I can't believe they counted that free throw. I'll check the recording, but I also thought the ref was in the lane walking toward the shooter after he blew his whistle. You can bet if the guy had missed they would have let him take it over. Just refs being refs.

Should not have counted. He misses that free throw Ball State would have argued the ref distracted him. Could not believe flyer nation wasn't yelling after that ruling by the refs.

once he has the ball, pretty sure rule is he is free to shoot it.

Ref should have waited to hand him the ball.

Thanks T-Bone. I saw it all, just couldn't figure out why play stopped. Also, gotta tell you, I was livid at the way Crosby handled what looked like the final possession and thankful that AG called the timeout(at least now that I know it was a timeout) Crosby had plenty of time to get the ball in position for a better shot than that but threw up a prayer.

I have to believe that Crosby realized a timeout was called and was just going through the motions.

On the free throw, Bucky thought the refs blew the whistle to discuss whether there were two shots due. I suspect he was guessing. The most likely scenario was about who committed the foul, or who the shooter was. I think once the whistle blew the free throw stops. Once the shooter is given the ball, he has a right to shoot, only if no whistle blows before he releases the ball.

You're probably right, but without audio, you just can't get the context and I'm pretty sure all of us watching on stream feel like we died and were revived like I did. It wasn't the announcers I needed so much on that play but at least hearing whistles before he let the shot go would've put the whole thing in context.

The whistle definitely was blown before the Ball State player took the free throw.

All my ref partners agreed the shot shouldn't have counted.

So what is the rule? What if the whistle had blown while he was shooting or after he had released the ball?

The Rule is that it's a dead ball as soon as the whistle blows...none of us could figure out how the refs justified allowing it to count especially since we also agreed had he missed, they'd have no choice but to give him another FT.

Imagine an inadvertent whistle during action where the shooter knocks in a '3' a full 2 seconds after the whistle. Of course, it wouldn't count. This really isn't any different. Whistle. Stop. Nothing counts until the ball is 'live' again.
