The Bama game was a "huuuugh get" as they say. Glad to see the win for them and US.
Saw the highlights last night on the financially strapped ESPN network

Watanabe hits a 3 with probably 0.3 seconds left to give GW a 53-52 lead.
But GW people ran on the court but the clock ran out this time.

Unbelievable. Why would you put a guy in to guard the ball who hadn't played. VCU is probably the luckiest team in history.

I glad I just received my patent for a 4 point seat belt attachment for folding chairs that doesn't unlock until the game clock is at 0.0 for 10 seconds! I've got two appointment set for tomorrow!
For god's sake players, managers, and staff please stop going onto the court. Did you not see what can happen!?!?!?!
Also I have seen that play to draw the charge many times over the years but that is only the 2nd time I've ever seen it called. Great call by Wade and poor job by GWs coach putting a guy in who barely(or hadn't) played and not reminding him to look out for that.

Gotta give Will Wade mad props for drawing up that play. That's basically the only chance they had to win. Most teams would just toss it long and either not get a shot off or get a really bad shot off. Unbelievable. If VCU is not # 1 in Ken Pom's "Luck Factor," then Ken Pom should just throw his computer out the window...

Just saw the replay of the end of the VCU/GW game. That one falls on the GW coach. Why guard the inbound when there's only @ 0.3 seconds left? That's barely enough time for a catch-and-shoot. Just have all 5 defenders drop back in "Hail Mary Coverage", and try to defend the pass at the receiver end of the court. The odds of anyone making a field goal in that situation are so astronomical (and, last time I checked, Laettner had used-up all his eligibility).

Here is a link with the replay of the foul at the end of the VCU vs. GW game...the GW defender should have had better awareness of what was going on IMO. Incredible ending.

Ok, why is that a foul? How often do you see a foul called when a defensive player runs into a pick? Think of those instances when the O player is dribbling up court and his teammate sets a pick and the defender is not paying attention. The guy gets flattened and everyone says one of his teammates should have called it out but no foul is called.
Rollo or any other refs out there, please weigh in.

Another question for Rollo. It appears that the VCU player's left foot is out of bounds when he is knocked down. What is the rule when a player is not in the field of play regarding fouls?

If you run INTO a pick...no call. (By 'into' I mean you bounce off him and nobody falls...flops don't count)
If you run THRU a pick...foul. (by 'thru' I mean the picker is physically displaced by force)
Because the defender ran thru the picker, the ref had to call something. Because the picker had a foot OB, it should have been 'blocking'.
In pregame, one common theme we discuss is players going down on the court. The phrase 'know how they got there' is how it's discussed. Players flop, players trip, players dive...they can end up on the floor any number of ways that don't include fouls or violations. So 'know how they got there' means don't guess and blow your whistle...it means you saw the contact and someone violated a Rule (gained an advantage).
If you're ever at a game and see someone on the ground with no whistle, it's because the refs are blaming the player for falling, not his opponent. Happens every game. Had it happen twice Monday night.*..and twice last night...no whistle either time despite screams from the stands.
*Monday night I had a girl on 2 consecutive possessions flop on the low post trying to draw a charge on a back-to-the -basket low post move. No call either time because it was an obvious flop. Next dead ball - for safety concerns - I walked up to her and said 'you've flopped twice in row and we haven't called it, so take the hint that we're not going to." She looked at me like I was crazy...but there were no more flops the rest of the game.

To draw a foul you cannot have a foot OB...because his foot was OB he was not in a legal guarding (picking) position so he was in violation.
Also, to be properly set, your feet CANNOT be wider than your shoulders. So if you set a pick - or try to draw a charge - with your feet spread wide, it doesn't matter how long you were stationary or how hard you got drilled. You're not in a legal position and, therefore, the foul is on YOU! Or at least it's supposed to be on you...

So, as I understand it, a defender can't use the out of bounds to create the charge. So in essence this should have been called a block on VCU. Wow. A10 officials screw up again.

There is no such thing as conference officials in basketball. Most officials work in certain regions. The same guys who are worked our game Tuesday night probably worked a Valley game or a MAC game Wednesday, and may work a BIG game Thursday.

In swimming there is an app that lets you follower all the swimmers in the meet so you know how your kid did and who's winning the meet.
Can someone piggy back that general concept and integrate it with Twitter to have live tweets saying "player was deemed to have fallen on his own, no charge called" or "player deemed to not have control of the ball so no travel called"? Maybe a senior official who does the tweeting for big games. That way people watching the game can realize they sound like idiots for screaming about rules that don't exist.

To defend the ref(s), we are trained to only call what we see. If he didn't see the foot OB, he made the right call. Based on the angle of the collision to where he was standing, it's completely reasonable to see that his view was partially blocked. And when you're surrounded by >6'8" monsters moving a high speeds, it's possible to NOT see something regardless of how hard you try to be in the proper position.
Tough call for the ref.
But in all honesty, how does the defender NOT know what's about to happen? That play has been around since the 50s. With 0.4 sec remaining, do you really need to over-guard the guy 94' away? Stupid.

Sorry, I'm currently working on a lawn fertilizer that keeps grass green and stops it from growing. I plan on selling the patent to Toro because if/when I go public, my 'Rollo-lizer' will put them out of business AND stop global warming....imagine never having to mow your lawn again. Think how much money golf courses will save! Think about the number of Mexican's I'll put out of work, forcing them to immigrate back to their homelands...If they can get over the wall! When it happens, you can thank me.
As for basketball, just give me a microphone and I'll do live commentary.

I think the appropriate form of address for our King is His Royal Majesty(and thereafter as Sire). His Royal Highness is used for mere Princes.
I made this mistake before, but fortunately His Royal Majesty is a forgiving King and thankfully chose not to persecute me.

UD opponent Winthrop is in OT against UNC Asheville right now on ESPN U. Really entertaining game with each team hitting big shots.

That game was crazy. Winthrop loses in double OT. In the grand scheme of things that isnt going to keep UD out of the tournament or anything like that but it would have been nice to see Winthrop pick up that W.

Thought Winthrop was jobbed on that late blocking call. Defender looked set to me. Fun game to watch, though.

Forget Duke/UNC. Winthrop/Ashville - One of the most entertaining games I have watched all season. Guys making shots - big time shots. Agree on Winthrop getting jobbed on the blocking call. The little guy - Keon Johnson - goes off for 40. Wow.

Nebraska just hit a 3 to tie Wisconsin with 0.1 seconds left.
And to my amazement nobody ran onto the court and Nebraska didn't guard the inbounder and run over a guy either!!!!!!
Going to OT BTN

I went from watching Winthrop-Asheville to watching Samford-Wofford. No real interest there, but that game went to 4 OT's with Wofford pulling it out 131-127... each team had late shots in one of the OTs to tie it and send to another OT. Wofford had 4 guys log over 55 minutes. Samford is coached by former Kentucky player Scott Padgett.

What the heck was that double foul call in the Purdue-IU game? The IU kid lowers his shoulder into the PU player playing great defense in the lane, and violently knocks him backwards, and the refs calls a double foul, as one ref had a block. Serious cop out, as that was a no doubter charge. Not sure I have ever seen a double foul called in that situation. I hope we do not see that again.

I've seen it before a few years ago made by two veteran officials, Jim Burr and Michael Stephens. They both happened to run out toward the scorer's table and unbeknownst to each other called opposite calls. Happen to know Stephens and saw him shortly after the call and asked him about it and he said when that unfortunate situation happens it is a double foul and they go to the arrow for possession.

Cop out.
I uttered those words at the same time Vitale did when the refs discussed and came to that conclusion. Total cop out as you had the home team underdog trying to make a frantic comeback and a clear (as clear as any block/charge) charge occurs. Purdue player was stationary, outside the restricted area, etc., and IU player lowers shoulder. It's called situational officiating. The rules that are applied in the first half...or a blowout...go out the window in the 2nd half...or close game.
I think I just teed up Rollo....

Radar, you did.
In pregame discussions, 'simultaneous whistles' - especially as they relate to the 'blarge' (block/charge) - are ALWAYS discussed! In 3-man reffing crews the middle ref is supposed to make the chargeblock call...in 2-man it's the lead (baseline) official's responsibility although there are caveats to both depending on where the drive started.
I don't know how all 3 officials in a B10 game screw this up...I mean these guys are uber-experienced and professional. If all 3 blow their whistles, none should follow with a mechanic except the one who has it in his 'primary'. The others, as discussed in the pregame, are supposed to stand there and wait for the primary ref to make the call and then support it!
That it took 5 minutes for the refs to huddle and then come out with the double-foul BS is - to me - just plain stubbornness on any of them to admit they were wrong or be shown to be wrong. UGH! As we discuss in pregame, the goal in tight situations is to GET THE CALL RIGHT! In this case, it was all about CYA.
Seriously...is it possible for a stationary defender to BOTH foul a shooter AND be fouled by the shooter simultaneously? Not in my royal opinion.
Could there have been a false-double-foul (foul on A followed quickly by a foul on B)? That is doubtful but makes more sense than a double foul, which has to happen at the same time and is usually applied to big men on the low post who are beating, pushing, elbowing each other uncontrollably.
UGH!

It has to be one or the other! Pick one! Can't just say 2 refs disagree, so your not going to make a decision.... Whomever's call it was needs to make it!
Just another black mark against refs!
ESPECIALLY when it was a close game with one minute left, and with the double foul call, BOTH players fouled out!

Here is the Primary coverage areas for a 3-man crew:
Here's the video: http://www.indystar.com/story/sports...game/97723830/
The drive starts in the green (trail official) but on the same side as the blue (lead official) but the collision occurs at the split between the blue and yellow (center official). The trail official rightfully does nothing since it isn't his call. The lead official - IMRO - should make this call since the drive started on his side of the floor...but rulebook says the center official should make this call so I can see why there was confusion. But training and experience tells me that the lead official should have delayed his mechanic but only if he heard the other whistle, which I don't think he did.
The other issue is that because the 'blarge' is such a tough call that often demands that the ref 'sell', the mechanic often has to be immediate and strong. Other foul mechanics can be delayed and most are, but the 'blarge' is typically a 'bang-bang' call to show confidence and no doubt. Both refs tried to immediately sell their call...and if backfired.
In all honesty, from the angle of each official I can see why the lead called 'block' and middle called 'charge'. It's all about angles and what you see. The TV angle was great, but refs can't levitate.
WOW...this is a tough one...royally tough.

You can argue the actual call but I believe in the case of the simultaneous call they handled the situation correctly.

Great analysis, Your Majesty. Thank you.
I can see why the lead called "block", because the defender was still moving, and if anything, his feet were set for a nanosecond. But I can also see why the middle called "charge", as the ballhandler dipped his shoulder into the defender, and had penetrated the defender's vertical space.
Have never officiated, but have been a "student of the game" for over 40 years. For my money, that was either a charge or a player control foul on the ballhandler because he invaded the vertical space of the defender, who was moving backward and away from contact. The ballhandler initiatiated contact with the "dip & lean". But yes, a very tough call, but one that officials at that level get paid to make.

That is great analysis. Just wondering if it is called the same in a five on five game as opposed to six on six as shown in the graphic. Sorry couldn't resist.

Big games today that impact us:
Winthrop over Gardner Webb (whatever that is)
Bama keep it rolling over Kentucky? 8 point dog.
Vandy over Missouri, would be great to keep them as a top 50 win.
St Marys over Gonzaga would be huge
E Tennessee State over Mercer, E Tenn is almost a top 100 win
Portland over Loyola Marymount
A10 - Do we want Bonnies to beat GW?
VCU vs Davidson. If VCU wins, it helps us when we beat them later. But if they lose, it puts distance between us and them...

The VCU question is tough. Their RPI is high enough they probably don't drop out of the top 50 with an L, and it would be nice to have the one game cushion, but then I tell myself "that's loser talk, (or thought)," because the cushion only matters if UD loses. In the end I have confidence our guys can take care of business with their destiny in their own hands. Defense looks great, Josh back, contributions coming from everywhere, I say let VCU run the table, (except for March 1 of course), and let's get to that 6 seed line!

If we would have lost last night i'd say we were pulling for a VCU loss today. Now we control are own destiny outright. VCU needs to remain a highest possible quality win for us. So ill be pulling for VCU. But with that Rhody win, it's just win baby win. Other teams results don't affect us as much now.

How about you root for VCU to lose to URI and UD. VCU still has to play at URI. Losses against anyone else hurts us and the A10.

At this point other then a outright league title and a #1 seed in Pittsburgh whatever sets up URI and VCU on the other side of the bracket is what we want.

And 'Nova did that on the road, but it's not like they came to a tough house like UD Arena. Still, 'Nova is the defending NCAA champion for a reason, and they proved a little something today.

Davidson at VCU is on CBS Sports. Cats up 15-7 early.
Btw you should at least check out the game for the cutaways to the VCU Gold Rush Dancers who have some new outfits that are skimpier than usual.

Edwin Young is one of the officials in this game. VCU already has 7 fouls in 9 minutes and the game is being called very tight. Hopefully Edwin is looking out for the interests of his alma mater. I bet VCU fans would go nuts if they realized he went to UD

Beat me to it. they had a chance to fold but did a nice job holding it together. besides the boost for UD's resume, it's nice to see NU doing this. I hope they keep it up. great story.

Still wish Justin Bibbs would have came to UD. I don't really remember if UD had a chance or was recruiting him.

I mean, I guess. I just was surprised to read that as I have not read anything to say that they are on the bubble and on exactly 4 out of 87 on bracketmatrix.com
And Dance Card has them below Houston among others buried down. I guess any team from the big conferences cannot be counted out, as they have so many opportunities to beat a ranked team...
Anyway, nice breakdown.

I'm sure there's a few teams I missed here and there, I mean I wasn't going to sit here with a ruler and go down the RPI list and pronounce judgment... but if Clemson and Georgia are on the bubble so is Pitt.
Probably a reach with UT-Arlington, but they did beat St. Mary's on the road. Feel free to quibble with others, I don't really mind.

ESPN yesterday had Indiana as one of the last four in. Silly. They will be in until they refuse to be in.

Did anyone else watch the WVU meltdown at Kansas? Up 14 with under 3 minutes to go and lose in OT. It was painful to watch. They had 2 or 3 possessions where they couldn't inbound the ball after a Kansas basket. Each one turned into points for Kansas.

Watching the collapse of WV was difficult but the real pain came in listening to Dickie V provide the "color." He needs to move on... He is such a homer for the blue bloods!

It was the craziest comeback I have seen in a long time. KU scored i think 21 in the final 2 minutes.
