Charles Cooke signs 2 way contract with Pelicans

Charles has signed a 2-way contract with the Pelicans according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/892046758813028352

Edit: And since the 2 way NBA/G-League contract is new this year here are a couple links explaining how they work. Basically he will get 75k minimum in G-league salary but can get up to a max of 280k by spending up to 45 days with the Pelicans. For a more thorough explanation read the articles.

According to Hoops Rumors, Charles was not willing to sign a two-way deal with the T-Wolves, but he did with the Pelicans:

Interesting that he turned down a 2-way from the Wolves but took one from the Pelicans. I'm bummed - would have loved to have seen him here.

Maybe he was more excited about playing in Pensacola than playing in Iowa. There is a saying in Minnesota that the Mississippi River flows south because "Iowa sucks". Of course, there is a saying in Iowa that the river flows south because "Minnesota blows".

We all know why it actually flows south - the other ones are jokes...two states insulting each other.

I got into a furious debate with a middle school teacher once who insisted just exactly that. Except we were talking about hot air rising toward the north pole and cool air falling to the equator. When informed that gravity does not pull objects "south" but instead "down" he assigned me a detention. I learned a lesson that day and it had nothing to do with weather patterns.

Personally I would go overseas instead of the 2 way contract, but it seems like a personal decision.

While discussing the thrilling topic of proper soil compaction during foundation construction, 2 engineers I work with both made it clear at a recent meeting that 'average means half the data failed' to which I said 'bullsh*t, it only means that at least 1 failed' which lead to a loooooooooong discussion about mean, median and mode.

This is simple stuff people...simple stuff. If you don't know the difference* between 'south' and 'down' or 'average' and 'median', then you really shouldn't be involved in anything important.

But it does explain how our country got $20T in debt without anyone raising hell.

Depends on the situation. $75k out of college is really good money for most people. If the Pelicans need a body - they will grab him first (as opposed to searching for free agents). And looking at the Pelicans depth chart - their SG situation is not a pretty picture when it comes to health.

The thought is they will run Rondo/Jrue at the same time. If either of them go down there is extra minutes to be had at the 2 - and they both have long injury histories.

The backup at the 2 is Jordan Crawford. Good player. Hasn't played over 45 games since 2011.

So Cooke gets to stay in the states, make decent money, and has a chance in NO to get the call up with injuries.

I'm sure the lure of playing on basketball's biggest stage, even for a couple games, is more important than extra money to a lot of players coming out of college.

Plus, at least it gives me a reason to care about the NBA. Unless a Flyer is playing, I don't give a bowel movement about the NBA.

The new two way contract is brand new to the NBA, so I will not argue with your assessment because it will take a few years to see how teams use these two new roster spots. However, I believe it was designed to be a way for NBA teams to pick their best two young assets, not ready for their current NBA roster and keep them, as well as development them more than simply having them play a full season in the D-League. These two way contracts are virtually teams picking their two best talents on their D-League team. So if a player simply makes the D-League, the chances of moving up to the NBA just became even smaller.

With this contract CC has a chance to spend up to 45 days in the NBA. To me this is will lead to him being in the league if he makes the most of this opportunity. Not to mention, it looks like he should make more than $200k in doing so.

The main question I have about Cooke signing with the Pelicans is where he will actually play in the G-league and how that team will use/develop him. The Pelicans will not have their own G-league team until the 2018-19 season so he will be playing for a team that the Pelicans have no control over. What's to stop the NBA team who controls the team he ends up on from telling their G-league team to play their own players more than a player from another organization. I'm okay with the 2 way contract and New Orleans seems like a team that is thin at the guard position, but New Orleans not having full control of a team worries me a little.

Depends on the situation . . . hence it's a personal decision.

Here's another scenario for you that would argue for not signing a 2-way contract: Rondo / Jrue are injury prone but in a stroke of luck play every game next year. Cooke never gets a chance because they don't need him. But LeBron has his first ever career threatening injury and the Cavs need a shooting guard, but Cooke can't do anything because he's locked in to the Pelicans.

This basically feels like betting on a single horse when you can bet on the field. The odds seem strongly in your favor to bet on the field or play overseas.
