We've got to stop Bessler. We've got to pass well to get us in system. We have to dig the ball like we've been doing early in the season. And we have to get a block up. I agree with UDBrian, X will probably be in a fast offense, so we have to get into place to set the block. Tough think to do.

Ud wins set 1 25 - 22 a little controversy as the lights dimmed when ud served the 24th point. Xavier coach wanted replay

It warmed my heart to have our second point a block of Bessler by Peterson and Brown.

UD wins first set 25-23. We took a 2-3 point lead early. Then lost it in the mid to late teens and X was up 2-3 points for awhile. But came back on Amber's serve to take the lead and finish it out. Both times Amber served, they had trouble handling her short serve. The first time she went Ace-Overpass for a UD Kill-Ace.

Come out strong in set 2 ladies!

Glad Jesus showed up on the good team. lol Auto Correct drives me crazy. Jess' last kill was nice -- tooled the block. If we can get some others up to speed (i.e. passing to set others and others like Jamie picking things up quickly) and get Jess hitting hitting mid 200s, we can be pretty good. It's a work in progress, and I know all these women are bringing it every day in practice to get there.

Close this out in 3. A sweep of X would be impressive indeed. They are picked 3rd in the Big East -- behind Creighton and Marquette. Creighton already has a loss. Marquette has a top upset, so they are probably the team to beat right now, but X has the returning POY. So it's a horse race.

Down 11 to 6 ud has miss hit a lot of balls to start this set. Passing isn't as good either

We outplayed them since the time out, but drop the set 19-25. For awhile there we couldn't do anything right and I was worried we wouldn't even get to 10 points -- which is hard to d in volleyball. It won't be easy, but we have to keep playing at a higher level and close out this match. We hit negative in the third set. (-.065).

We needed more offense the 2nd half of the 3rd and TH went with her and she responded and then was in the rotation from the bringing of the 4th. Jamie is a better blocker, but still learning the attack at this level. Brianna is farther along the hitting curve - although as a redshirt freshman, she too is still learning and inconsistent as all freshmen are. He just needs to use them both at this point and see who can put it all together. Nice luxury to have for a young team.

UD wins in 4 -- 25-16. Other than the 3rd set, we took it to X. Somewhat of a grind of a match, but you have those throughout the season and you still have to find a way to win and we did. 5-0 and the biggest test so far in Northwestern. Get a good night's rest ladies. 1 pm Sat comes quick.

They played well in set 4, overall probably the best set of the match without looking at stats

Set 3 was crazy. I don't know what was said during intermission but they struggled just to get the ball over the net and in during most of set 3. They finally started playing when Xavier reached about 18 and got some momentum for set 4.

Kudos to Pittman as well. At 8-19 in the third, it looked like Horsmon put her in to get some PT in a blowout set. While the set was long gone, she helped stabilize things. Then, she starts the 4th set and helps us get out to a decent lead. Good for her.

Looks like this year's team may be the type that has an 'on any given night' mentality. Lots of options for offense with good setting and I agree with Brian that it was generally a good setting night. Some of them were really, really good.

Bruns had a larger impact than her stats show. And for this match anyway, she was a force at server. Great pace, the ball was dropping, and UD scored more than their share of points when she was serving. Amber too - great control on her soft floats. And yes, the 3rd set was absolutely awful. Poor passing (very poor) that led to so many out of system band-aids. Looked like someone spiked their Gatorade at intermission! : ) I wasn't sure they'd make it to 10 either, but was glad to see the momentum at the end of the set. It was enough to let X know UD wasn't done for the night and they proved that point with a tremendous 4th set.

I thought this one was going to be 60:40 odds in favor of X and we took it to them. Especially on the block. First time all season it looked like we won the blocking battle, and that's without counting the ton of 'blocks' that don't count as such statistically.

NW has a fantastic OH, an offensive-minded setter, and some good servers. Dayton will need to bring it again at 1 tomorrow but if the girls can play like tonite (without set #3), my money's on us. Lastly, Chattanooga is a scrappy team but their OHs are very short and the rest of the team isn't much taller. I think their setter is new also and we should be able to hit over her RS block all night. They were manhandled (womanhandled? ; ) by NW.

This was the most complete match so far this season in my mind. Definitely things to work on and issues to fix but I saw the framework of a potentially good team tonite. Beating X in this fashion (not a rout but a good, solid win) is so encouraging and will hopefully be a stepping stone to better things no matter what happens against a solid B10 team in NW.

Xavier probably wont make the NCAAs, but they did beat Missouri State which I think had a good program, and took a set off #14 Illinois.

The good news is we're figuring out who we are as players learn new roles -- as we continue to win. To be 5-0 right now while searching for an identity is a good omen. Lots of teams might be 3-2/2-3 right now. Northwestern will tell us a lot more.

Is Horsmon trying to RS Westbeld? That would be a huge "save" to push her to next season. Imagine how good she'd be in 2020. Since we dont graduate anyone, maybe he wants to balance the classes a bit better?

Great match. It was very interesting watching the game from the back left corner, just off the court. Watching the LS hitters go up, you can see the block, and wonder if they can make it to the right of the block or not, and get it in.

We had 43 digs in this 4-set match. 3 days earlier we had 92. Amazing what a lack of rallies will show on the scorecard.

I think you have to say Brooke isn't ready yet so a RS option is on the table. But it will be determined by the health and play of all the setters. You don't have to declare a redshirt by any deadline so for now I think we can only conclude she is working hard to learn the system and locking in her timing and connection with all the hitters. Whatever plays out this year, she is going to be a great player for this program.
