North Dakota Thread
This team won their conference the last 2 years. They could be our toughest match this weekend. We'll be tested early and as the only ranked team they play this year...they'll be looking to knock us off early.
All those seniors we lost...well that might help us this match. Very little film on our players to prepare for this match. We'll have at least 3 new starters in the 7 player rotation and maybe as many as 4 plus Megan Campbell who only started a couple matches last year.

I'm signed up for the live feed, but no active link yet. It's 2 hours before match-time. Gotta couple errands to run, but I'll be ready 30 minutes prior to kick off this season. Can't wait. GO FLYERS!!!

I just found this on North Dakota's website. You can buy a tournament subscription on Green Bay's web page for $7.99 and get audio and video for the entire tournament -- all 3 Dayton matches plus all the other matches too.
But ND's got an option to link into just the audio -- for FREE. You'll at least get to hear the action in real-time versus picking up my posts herein -- it's a way better option. Here's the link:

Just got logged on -- took a little time to find the right link.
UD was down in the first set 14-8. Got the side out with a block and Kray is serving. It's 14-11. Timeout ND. She is so good at serving rallies.

ND gets a side out after time out. They are pushing us. It's 17-12 ND. Time out UD.

I remember watching kray her first year warming up. I told her that she had a very good serve and she said "Really, I don't think so".
Received a text message. The starting lineup was Kray, Yvonne, Megan Campbell, Hannah, Selsky, Brown and Vargas.

Well there is the wake up call...UD drops the first set 25-16. Folks that was not even close. We did not pass the ball well. And we had 2 service errors after 14-8. I also saw ND's leftsides hit over our block a couple times and they tooled a couple points off our rightside. The announcer is just now talking about the problems we had with serve receive this set and the bad passes Sam had to run down.

Not what you wanted for a young team, confidence is fragile for young and inexperienced players. If they can find a way to win this match it will have been a great match for them.

We look a lot sharper, but serve receive is still weak at times. Yvonne serving at 15-7 and we score twice to 17-7. Time out ND. Yvonne's serve looks awesome -- Jamie Lee Richards-like jump serve.

Dayton wins set 2 -- 25-12. We looked sharp early and scrappy late. Those are both good qualities although as a fan it's easier to watch sharp. lol.
We also get a get rotation to close out the set. Kray on the service line at 20-12. She serves the last 5 point including an ace for 24th point and a kill out of the backrow for the 25th. I don't know how she does it -- but just like last year, we score a lot of points when she is serving.
Only a 3 minute half time.

Tough matches are what this team needs. A ton of unknowns. We basically lost the best 4-5 players in the whole A10 to graduation. Completely new team thats young and somewhat inexperienced at key positions.

UD up 7-1. Time out ND. Z has scored twice playing the middle with quick/short sets in front of Sam -- aka Lindsay-type sets. Once last set and just now.

Time out UD leading 17-14, but we were up 5-6 points all match and ND is outplaying us to get it to 3 points. Go Flyers!! Put it away.

Dayton up 21-17 with Paige serving her second ball. Time out ND -- questioning a ref call. We need to close this out. ND got within two twice @ 18-16 and 19-17. So they will bring it coming out of this timeout.

UD wins 25-19. Good to see us pull it back out to 6 points. Kray is by far the MVP of this match. She could make 14 errors in this 4th set and STILL be the MVP -- that's how well she is playing in all aspects of the game. She again serves the last 2 points -- after getting a kill for the 23rd point and getting the side out to put herself at the serving line.

Kray schooling everyone. She even send a free-ball bumped ball over the net from the UD coaches' seats and we score off it.

We got to close this team out. Timeout UD up only 15-11 with ND serving and pushing us. We just had a terrible pass off a free ball that fell on the floor too close to the net. Time to re-focus.

25-20 UD wins 3-1. Good first match win. We'll need to fix somethings against our next two opponents this weekend - but we should be able to do that. I haven't seen the stats, but Kray was awesome. Her few errors came as a result of out-of-system plays and everyone knowing the ball was going to her.

I watched the video as well. Pretty scary how well Kray played. In one of the videos Shef talked about other teams keying in on Krabacher in their game plans. It will only take a coach a few minutes of watching this video to know shes the one you need to stop. But it is clearly very hard to do. Even her attacks out of the back row from an average pass were capable of finding the floor one way or another. When she got even an above average pass hitting out of the back row North Dakota didn't stand much of a chance. The one pass caused her to take off early and jump way over the ten foot line and she still got it above the net and kept it away from the Sioux block for the point. Recap says she posted a double-double, but the word double doesn't really do 21 kills justice.
Serving was good in the last three games. Kray and Morey are still just as dangerous and Paige has an array of serves that she can use that kept the ND serve receive guessing. Megan Campbell and Yvonne both did well too without much previous serve experience at this level.
The first game clearly showed that a good team with the will to knock off a ranked team can rattle our serve receive and first pass. Sam Selsky got a good work out in the first half. The Flyers need a lot more work on the first pass. Although, when the Flyers had good chance in the first game they were able to finish with authority. The team then did a remarkable job bouncing back after a tough loss to really take the momentum away from ND.
Overall, not a bad first outing. Isolde looked good as well. Offensive attacks weren't as crisp as you would want, but her block was dominant late in the match. Like to see someone who gets better as the game goes on and pushes even harder when the victory is in sight. Additionally, I liked Sam's killer instinct. Thought she mostly made good choices about when to go for that setter attack.

She starts on the left side of the service line and does one of those little runs to the right and serves taking off one foot. Someone else did that maybe 2 years ago -- I just can't remember who.

Kray has 23.5 of our 69 points scored - just over 1/3. Hits .348 from the left side (and the backrow), 2 aces, double-double and the only "bad" stat of her night - 1 block assist. I don't care who we are playing -- if she comes close to holding up those numbers she could very well be National Player of the Week. It was that dominate of a performance. She was everywhere on the court.
p.s. -- Of course even with these numbers, it will be tough to be named A-10 Player of the Week. She wears a UD uniform after all.

One observation is I didn't see the speed I thought I would. I think it's there -- just first match glitches. For example- not until late in the match did we start feeding the middles with the quick/short set in front of the setter. I also thought we were having problems with the slide set. Mostly due to poor passing and then still trying to going for it. In the send-off video, Sheff makes a comment about hitting down the line. That wasn't happening a lot. To hit a slide down the line the ball has to be set at the outside pole. Sam wasn't getting enough good passes to have that option. I did see it in the short blue-red scrimmage video -- so the team has this down and can use it WHEN (not if) we improve the passing game.
Also -- it's tough to gage speed in the blocking game off of a video if the camera-angle is center net like tonight. So we could have been quicker than we looked. 11 team blocks is a nice start.

Probably a good team for a first match. The Sioux went 25-5 last year, winning their last 15 in a row - including the Great West conference and tournament title. Of course, it was a different level of competition than what we play. No automatic NCAA bid for the Great West - too young a league I think. Still, they were a top 100 RPI team last year and are picked to 3-peat in their league this year. Should be a good RPI stuffer.

We played against someone last year who served that way. Is it similar to the woman at nebraska who had such a good top spin serve?
I don't think you could have scripted this match any better for the future. A young nervous team plays poorly in the first set and gets pasted because of it. But, they improve their play and win convincingly. Glad to here that Isolde blocked well.

The setter from Nebraska - Banwarth I think (BeckysTXA on this one...) gave the team fits - oh, and dug EVERYTHING too. Best player I saw all year long.
